Part 5:
Tor Lorek San…
—————
Celebi fell onto a flat, hard surface. She quickly brought her arms up in a futile gesture to protect herself from the wave of blood-red plasma about to eradicate her entire being. As the seconds ticked by that she was still breathing, her fears began to fade, and she opened her eyes. She was in space, much to her surprise and confusion, suspended above the planet in a purple bubble of hard light energy. She pressed her hands against the walls and peered down at the blue Earth below.
“Would you believe that this was the first thing I wanted to do?” a voice asked from behind her.
Celebi turned around and finally noticed she wasn’t alone in the indigo safe-haven floating in the vacuum of space.
A young man sat on the floor of the artificial construct made of light cradling a glowing staff in his arms that seemed to contain a wellspring of indigo energy. His attire was very simple; he didn’t wear a shirt, and his pants were worn down and threadbare. He wore mismatching bracelets on his arms and a small planet-like pendant around his neck. He had no shoes to speak of. His long and bushy green hair fell freely down his back. On his forehead and along his bare arms and legs were repeating symbols, circles framed on the tops and bottoms by arrows.
“When this ring came to me,” he said, showing his right hand to Celebi. The indigo ring that he wore on his middle finger held a soft glow and a thin trail of energy led to the nearest surface of the bubble, “the very first thing I wanted to do was see the Earth. To see it all for what it really was. What would you do?”
“Oh no, another ring,” Celebi recoiled and backed away from the man. “What are you going to do? Burn me alive in a rage fit too?”
“[Rage]?” asked the man. He seemed to ponder the idea of it for a moment, looking into the face of his ring. He closed his eyes and his face twisted into an angry snarl. A sigil appeared in front of his forehead. A red ring with the symbol of rage inside burned in the air in front of his eyes. “I do have [Rage], I believe we all might deep down, but mine isn’t directed at you.”
The red symbol disappeared and the man’s face returned to its natural and calm state.
“That’s the same symbol that Rikalia had! How are you using it?” Celebi asked. “Yours is different, and a different color.”
“The indigo light, the most complicated and intricate, is that of [Compassion],” said the man. “It lets one feel and understand other’s emotions. With it, you can truly feel what impact you have on another’s life.”
Celebi cringed, something stung and burned her cheek. When she brought her hand to her face, she recoiled as small red flames of anger burned her hand. “I think I understand how I impact other’s just fine.”
“I don’t think so,” the man said. “I see that another’s [Rage] has left a lasting impression on you. There is only one cure for such hate.”
“What is it?” asked Celebi.
“[Hope].”He closed his eyes again and a different symbol appeared in front of his head; a blue ring and sigil. He shined the blue light and washed away the lingering flames that clung to Celebi.
Almost immediately Celebi felt the relief and return of her psychic powers. “It removed the red energy.”
“[Compassion] can do so much more,” he said. “It can be used to share in [Love], pick up and support [Hope], strengthen [Willpower], quell one’s [Fear], sate another’s [Avarice], and quiet the [Rage] we all feel in our hearts.” As the man spoke, colored symbols representing each emotion appeared over his forehead, shifting from one to the next. “It’s a power that came to me because I… lacked something; a connection to others’ hearts. I never knew just quite how my actions affected anyone else. But now I feel it. I feel it all.”
“What… What did you do?” asked Celebi.
“I was instrumental in a plot set in motion by my father to separate humans and Pokémon forever,” he said. “My name is N, and I was raised with Pokémon all of my childhood. I was shown the cruelty that humans did in this world and it poisoned my mind. I didn’t know a single legitimate truth in my life, until I met someone who finally opened my eyes. But even then, it wasn’t enough; I still didn’t understand how he and others felt about what I tried to do. But this ring showed me what I needed to feel, and after it came I only wish it had come sooner.”
“And with your ring, you can remove red energy. You can help save Rikalia from her ring, right?”
“No. I cannot cure her of her deep seeded [Rage]. The one who set her down that path must be the one to bring her back from the brink, lest she be entirely consumed by her hatred of you.” N lowered the end of his staff and reached inside of it with his hand. He clenched his fist around something that shone brightly. “But even you alone cannot complete this task you have set for yourself.” He opened his fist, revealing the contents of his left hand. There rested a second indigo ring, its light slowly dimming to a soft glow.
“Oh, I see where this is going,” Celebi huffed, crossing her arms. “I’m not putting on some brainwashing, cultist jewelry just because it might think I’m a little insensitive.”
“The ring knows,” N said. “Even I can tell. There is no mistaking it. This ring was meant to be worn by you.”
“Well, too bad. I’m fine without the tattoos and glow-stick.”
N simply smiled and continued holding out his hand. “I understand. This isn’t something anyone would easily take onto themselves. You should attempt to see it another way though. Under normal circumstances, this ring—like my own—would have sought you out and opened your eyes by force. While I am grateful for its appearance, I do not agree with such an intrusive method of finding bearers. I want you to want this. That’s why I brought you up here.”
“Why?” Celebi hovered in the air in front of N. “Why do you care about me? I’ve never met you, and I’ll bet there’s other things you could be doing. I’ll bet there are a bunch of other scumbags down on the planet who could really use that ring.”
“I care about you with all of my heart,” said N. His expression was honest and unwavering. “You aren’t a stranger to me. All Pokémon are my friends, and I know that this ring here in my hand can bring you peace. That’s what you want, isn’t it? Peace from your own past? Forgiveness for your actions?”
Celebi stared back at him and couldn’t sense any ill-intent or lies coming from the strangest human she had ever met. She slowly reached out and took the ring from N’s palm and held it in her hands for a few moments. She thought to herself about exactly what she wanted, and then slipped the ring over her small finger. The ring shrunk to an appropriate size for her hand in shocking instant and Celebi immediately felt the rush of energy that bonded to her mind and body.
[Achaicus Erela of Earth.]
[You have the ability to feel great Compassion.]
[Welcome to the Indigo Tribe.]
The newest lantern of Earth stared down at her hand, admiring the ring she wore. Clenching her fist, she brought her arms close to her chest. Celebi let out a sob, tears falling freely from her large eyes. Her forehead shone with a red sigil of rage.
“I— I never knew… just how much they hated me…” Celebi cried. “Even from all the way up here, I can feel it.”
N stood and took her into his arms in a soft embrace. He comforted her for a silent moment, suspended in the stars.
“So,” he said, letting Celebi float out away from his arms, “what’s the first thing you want to do?”
“I want to find the Blue Lantern.” Celebi said, with newfound confidence. Her forehead began to shine blue with hope. “They can help save my friends.”
“I’ll open a gateway to him,” said N, but Celebi stopped him.
“No, this is my responsibility.” She spread her arms wide and let loose a purple wave of energy from her ring. A portal appeared, leading to the skies above a forested area. A Blue Lantern and a Yellow Lantern could be seen fighting off angry Orange apparitions that sought to devour their very essence.
“Let us hurry,” N said. “I have a feeling I recognize that particular shade of [Avarice].”
“Nok,” said Celebi.
“Nok.”
