CHAPTER 6
Ryosuke pulled a mug from the cabinet, and poured a cup of coffee to reduce the fog of exhaustion clouding his mind. How to settle the argument that had awoken him flitted through his mind.
"Nani is on your mind, Ryosuke?" Otosān asked as he entered the kitchen.
"Fujiwara's nightmares. Seeing Keisuke get injured that badly devastated Fujiwara. Keisuke was so worried about Fujiwara getting hung in the spring a second time that I agreed to his staying downstairs. We avoided Keisuke having another lung spasm over Fujiwara being so upset by his nightmare last night."
"We know Takumi-kun's not sleeping well, musuko. He looks tired on the mornings I happen to be here for breakfast."
"That's no excuse for Keisuke breaking this rule. If he kicks Takumi's leg in his sleep, he will hurt him. Okamoto-san said his leg is still at risk right now. We can't allow Keisuke to be reckless. I won't watch Takumi kun endure an amputation after we've worked so hard to help him save it. Getting kicked isn't an option." Okāsan argued.
Like Keisuke, Okāsan focused on one thing at a time. Yukiko Takahashi also had the same tenacious streak Keisuke had inherited. Dealing with Okāsan in a foul mood was difficult at best, nightmarish at worst Ryosuke knew. Annoyance gave Ryosuke's voice a hard edge. "If Keisuke had died, it would have literally destroyed Fujiwara, Okāsan. We're both very concerned about Fujiwara's mental health. Fujiwara's emotional attachment to my little brother is very strong. His panics are severe enough to make Keisuke careful about his own health. I believe Keisuke's aware that Fujiwara's still terrified of him dying without warning."
"If that's the case, it'll take time for Takumi to heal from seeing your brother badly injured, Onīchan. However, that's no excuse for Keisuke's irresponsible behavior. Worse, he's always had a rebellious streak. I won't let him backslide into his previous lifestyle."
Ryosuke sipped from his cup, contemplating his annoyed okāsan. Otosān was more accepting of Keisuke's unexpected behavior as it mirrored his own instincts. "I think Fujiwara's nightmares are worse than the incident was, Okāsan. I'd wager that Keisuke knows how bad Fujiwara's nightmares are. He's trying to calm him down before Fujiwara injures his leg again. Fujiwara already hurts himself by pushing his leg, as we all know."
"Takumi-kun getting trapped in his bedding could cause setbacks. We recognize that possibility, musuko. The shattered bone wasn't strong enough to take his leg out of the cage. Okamoto removed it early because Takumi kun was in so much pain he stopped sleeping, or eating while in it. We decided to act because of this unseasonable cool weather also. A higher potential for re fragmenting exists if Takumi's thigh is placed under any strain. Okāsan has good reason to be so concerned about Keisuke's presence next to Takumi kun. If the glued together segment of bone fragments break, they'll rip Takumi's veins apart. He will lose his leg if that happens."
"Fujiwara still avoids sleep, and his pain medication, Otosān. I'm concerned about the number of times I've gotten home from Uni to find Fujiwara tangled in his bedding and tossing in his sleep. He's obviously distressed by more than pain. Fujiwara's subtle behaviors don't point to strain on his broken bone causing his thrashing."
"Takumi-kun has Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, musuko. It doesn't help that Keisuke's being overprotective. We all see Takumi's psychological suffering. Your little brother's overwhelming Okāsan faster than I do whenever I'm worried because of it. She's told me about how often they bicker because Keisuke won't stop hovering. I'm sure Takumi kun's temper is getting as frayed as Okāsan's by now."
Ryosuke watched Okāsan turn to his Otosān with a glare. "Keisuke's proving that he's even more annoying than you get. He's downright obnoxious. I would gladly have done without your over protective trait in my children. Keisuke's hovering, and growling annoys Takumi kun daily. Worse, Keisuke's overprotectiveness involves ordering Takumi kun around instead of being overly helpful, unlike you.
Otosān smiled as he replied to her sharp verbal jabs. "Good to know you understand trying to get Keisuke back into his bedroom is a waste of energy, Okāsan. If you were hurting yourself almost every night because of nightmares you couldn't awaken from, nothing could drag me away from you. Even if Keisuke's being bossy, I think that comes to being separated from Takumi every night. I'm sure Keisuke's protectiveness won't let him injure Takumi even when he's asleep if he stays with his partner."
Ryosuke took a sip of coffee as he watched the exchange. Okāsan shook her head and sighed in obvious aggravation. Ryosuke fought the smile that threatened to show itself. He would miss moments like these once he moved to his new post. "Keisuke listens to me. Once the frame's repaired, I'll convince him to go back to his room to sleep. Just be aware that we'll have repeats of this morning if Fujiwara's mental state continues to deteriorate. Keisuke handles Fujiwara's decline as badly as Fujiwara handles Keisuke's lung spasms."
Okāsan turned her head toward Otosān. Her gaze was thoughtful. She pushed her hair behind her ear as her lips pursed for a moment. "Takumi-kun did look peaceful when I went in to wake him for breakfast. I was so frightened Keisuke was with him that it didn't register until now. It's the first time I've seen Takumi so relaxed since he's been here."
"I also noticed, sweetheart. That's was naze I was trying to calm you down. It was obvious that Takumi was getting genuine rest. It seems Keisuke was calmer too unless my eyes deceived me when I followed you into the study. Perhaps the separate room rule is a bit too strict under the circumstances. If Takumi rests, they'll both recover faster."
"Fujiwara mentioned he can't wake up and gets tangled in his bedding because of his medication. Keisuke can unwrap his legs even if Fujiwara can't wake up on his own. Letting Keisuke stay downstairs prevents Fujiwara from putting so much pressure on his thigh, Okāsan. Would you consider relaxing the rule, yoroshiku? I don't see Keisuke hurting Fujiwara if he does stay downstairs. Otosān has a good point about them recovering faster if they both calm down."
Okāsan was slow to speak. "I don't want Takumi-kun getting re injured. Keisuke's ability to restrain himself when he's asleep is one factor we don't know. We need to keep a safety net in place for Takumi's sake."
"Sweetheart, it's not as if Keisuke gets a treat staying downstairs. In fact, he's the one that will get kicked the most because of Takumi's nightmares." Otosān smiled at his wife as she looked at him with a frown.
Ryosuke watched as Okāsan sighed yet again. Releasing annoyance was hard for her. "I saw the last two lung spasms cause Takumi-kun's escalating panics over Keisuke. I wonder if those attacks made his nightmares worse."
"Most likely. Keisuke makes himself sick because he's upset over Takumi kun being so worried about him. He has a spasm, triggering Takumi's anxiety which comes out in his terrible dreams. Perhaps Keisuke being closer to Takumi will help them both to relax. We'll have a much easier time handling them both, Okāsan. I think it's wiser if we don't restrict Keisuke right now. If his nightmares get any worse, Takumi-kun could lose his leg even without Keisuke's involvement, Yukiko."
Ryosuke set his mug on the counter. He crossed his arms over his chest and added pressure to the mix. "Fujiwara asked outright if Keisuke will have another severe attack and die last night. He also asked how to curb future events. He said he feels like Keisuke's dying whenever he has an attack. His dream last night was so bad that he managed to catch the bedding up in the triple hinge, plus break a spring, Okāsan. The pressure on his glued together and pinned bone fragments every night he gets trapped like that is more dangerous than getting kicked, Okāsan."
Ryosuke watched Okāsan's reactions as Otosān replied. "I don't think Keisuke will ever kick Takumi-kun because he's so protective of him. We could put the guest's futon in the study if Okasān insists. That way Keisuke can't kick Takumi's leg in his sleep, but would be close by if needed. Takumi's nightmares are escalating Keisuke's notoriously short temper. When he gets upset enough, Keisuke will have another lung spasm. Then, Takumi-kun will have even worse nightmares. This is becoming a vicious cycle."
Okāsan was drumming her index finger on the counter top. Silence hung over the room as Otosān leaned against the counter and let her think. "I'm aware Takumi-kun can't cope with Keisuke getting ill again. I know we have to prevent Keisuke from having lung spasms that add to Takumi's stress. Still, I don't like changing this rule because it's so risky. Until Takumi's bone fragments fuse more, he could lose his leg. Any impacts to his right thigh could mean amputation. I worry that will happen if Keisuke's downstairs."
"Keisuke's attachment to Fujiwara will prevent him from hurting that leg. My little brother protects Fujiwara at all costs. He's already proven that beyond doubt twice. To be honest, I've never seen Keisuke as serious about anything as he has been about making this relationship with Fujiwara work, Okāsan. He's not nearly this dedicated to driving. His genuine devotion to Fujiwara's happiness has been mind-blowing to watch. I know you have doubt's, Okāsan, but I think Keisuke's concern over Fujiwara's health plays in our favor. Keisuke knows that Fujiwara's leg's at stake. He'll make certain nothing happens to it."
"Our younger musuko's like me, sweetheart. Could you see me hurting you in such a situation?"
She snapped, "Of course not. Nevertheless, Takumi gets so annoyed with Keisuke because he hovers so much. Takumi-kun's no more likely to wither away if he gets five minutes of peace than I am. The only peace he gets right now is by going to bed alone."
"Keisuke won't kick his glued and pinned together leg, Yukiko. I wouldn't do that, so I know Keisuke won't." Ryosuke heard an edge enter Otosān's normally placid voice.
"Okāsan, I doubt Fujiwara wants or needs to be alone. He's at his emotional limit. If Keisuke can reassure him he's not dying, it will benefit both of them. We know Fujiwara won't call out when he's in trouble at night. Keisuke and I have found him trying to get free of his bedding too often. His medication makes him both clumsy and groggy. He doesn't comprehend the situation well enough to extract his brace from his bedding. That's adding too much strain to the fragmented bones, and escalating mine and Keisuke's concerns. Fujiwara's nightmares are getting worse. He's too worried about my little brother. Having them together will give both of them peace of mind, and probably stop most of their arguments."
" . . . . . ."
Ryosuke continued as Okāsan's brows twitched and she refused to answer. "Keisuke won't calm down. Unless Fujiwara changes either his behavior, or he's able to keep an eye on his boyfriend, this situation will get out of control. The last thing any of us needs, is for Keisuke to get angry enough to another lung spasm. Fujiwara literally can't deal with another one, Okāsan. Fujiwara should calm down if Keisuke's within easy reach because that reinforces for him that Keisuke's still alive."
"I was upset when I learned we have another musuko, but I'm becoming quite fond of Takumi-kun. I believe he honestly loves Keisuke. Our musuko's found someone devoted to him, instead of his trust fund. Being helpless is a trait I can't accept in myself. Keisuke's the same. Feeling helpless keeps him irritable. I think we should place our faith in Keisuke. I know he'll protect Takumi-kun better than separate rooms."
"Fujiwara usually curbs Keisuke's more spoiled behaviors, Okāsan. Sometime's Fujiwara seems even tempered to the point of being docile, but he isn't a pushover. He normally forces Keisuke to compromise. If Fujiwara's mental state disintegrates any further, Keisuke will gain too much control in their relationship. Keisuke's already manipulating Fujiwara into being subservient of late. His fear of losing Keisuke means Fujiwara's not standing his ground the way he has in the past."
"Takumi-kun isn't letting Keisuke push him around. They argue a fair amount, so you must be wrong, Onīchan. I hear Takumi-kun tell Keisuke to back off almost every day."
"You know that Keisuke gets impatient and pushes to get his way when he feels there's something important at stake, Okāsan. Fujiwara doesn't tolerate coercion normally. Every lung spasm, and nightmare is sapping his psychological strength. I've seen Keisuke getting away with things he wouldn't dare attempt before. Fujiwara's much too anxious to stand up to my little brother right now."
"Where's your proof, Onīchan? Otherwise, I have to disagree."
"Before the shooting Keisuke would never insinuate intimate things around any of us, much less give obvious hints about their relationship. Fujiwara always made Keisuke very sorry for reminding others that they are together, even by accident. Yet, a few days ago Keisuke openly used Fujiwara's lap for a pillow. Then, he baited Fujiwara in several suggestive contexts with us present. This morning Keisuke bluntly confronted you on the issue of their sexuality. The absence of Fujiwara's hard censure over those things gives me very good reasons to be alarmed." Ryosuke hammered his impressions home.
"You're referring to the day when that huge packet from Sammy-chan arrived? I came in and Keisuke had his head in Takumi-kun's lap. I know he teased Takumi-kun about him being cute once or twice, but it wasn't all that much. This morning was shocking, but Takumi-kun told him he was wrong."
Ryosuke felt his irritation escalating. "Okāsan, Fujiwara's the soul of discretion. He wasn't nearly as forceful about keeping their relationship private as is normal for him. I expected him to snap at Keisuke to refrain from loaded comments in public at the very least. It was amusing to see him so embarrassed, but it disturbs me. Fujiwara isn't behaving normally. I know him far better than you do, and I'm telling you that something's very wrong with Fujiwara's behavior!"
"Perhaps we haven't found the right way to help Takumi-kun adjust to living here if that's the case, musuko. We've noticed that he finds it hard to understand a stable family. Perhaps, if we relax the rule, it will also calm Takumi's fears about belonging here. It will definitely calm his fears over Keisuke's health issues. It might make it easier for him to get comfortable." Otosān intervened.
"Last night, Fujiwara said he told Bunta-san to disown him because he's with Keisuke, Okāsan. That happened in front of Keisuke. Bunta-san was being nasty to him specifically, and Fujiwara retaliated. That added to my brother's anxiety over Fujiwara's odd behavior. Fujiwara had to choose between his two strongest emotional ties. I think that has added to Fujiwara's escalating nightmares also." Ryosuke snapped at his ryōshin.
"That certainly explains things, Onīchan. I better do something about this before Takumi's family falls apart. Takumi doesn't need to lose his Otosān. Bunta might be a drunken baka, but he's the only relative Takumi-kun has. I better pay him a visit this evening." Okāsan sounded thoughtful as she tapped her chin.
Ryosuke felt his eyebrows lift to his hairline as he looked at his mother. "Okāsan? Bunta-san's not a docile person. He may become violent if he feels cornered. Fujiwara has given off too many signals that Bunta-san's dangerous when pushed. Keisuke mentioned Fujiwara has scars on his back before Mogi attacked them."
"I'm sure Okāsan can handle Fujiwara senior, Ryosuke. Bunta has no idea about his musuko's neurological prognosis. We also need to arrange to bring Takumi's car here. He has mentioned that he's anxious to find work. He'll need transportation in Late February or early March. He can look for work here, once his leg's out of the brace."
Ryosuke felt his eyes widen. "Matte! It sounds like you've decided to keep Fujiwara here after his leg heals."
Ryuunosuke nodded. "Remaining with us would be safer for Takumi-kun. I noticed scars on the back of his upper legs when I inspected his sutures to make certain infection hadn't set in after Okamoto removed the bone brace. I'm neither blind nor foolish. Bunta's livid about Takumi's choice to remain with Keisuke. I won't let Bunta-san take his rage out on Takumi after his leg heals. Okāsan agrees with me."
"I'd better go with you, Okāsan. I don't want you facing Fujiwara's otosān alone."
"Excellent suggestion, Ryosuke. You can drive Takumi's car home. That settles things without making additional arrangements to ship the car on another day." Otosān smiled as he looked at them both.
"I'd better check on the shonen. Keisuke still needs to do his breathing treatment, and I should apologize to Takumi-kun for scaring him witless this morning. Since you're so worried that you dared raise your voice to me, Onīchan, I'll even relax the separate room rule." Okāsan turned and left the kitchen.
His Otosān gave him a bemused look. "Sometimes, you concern me more than Keisuke, musuko. You know your plan could have backfired and she'd be angrier with you than onīchan." Ryosuke took a sip from his mug as he looked at the counter top.
A hand dropped to his shoulder. "Go back to bed for a few hours. It's Sunday, so you should rest. You're exhausted. Gomen nasai that we woke you, Ryosuke."
Ryosuke looked at his Otosān, and shrugged. "Don't worry about it. At least I was able to help straighten things out. I'll go back to bed soon." His Otosān nodded with a smile. "First, I'll help Keisuke fix that broken spring. I can go back to sleep once that's done. Make sure Okāsan gets me up before she leaves for Fujiwara's home." When his Otosān gave another nod, Ryosuke sat his half full mug down and left the kitchen.
