Chapter 6: In Darkness, Corrupted Light
Playlist:
Night on Bald Mountain by Modest Mussorgsky
===
The conversation with Claude had left Ciel unsettled, and losing the game even more so. He lay obstinately awake, eyes having adjusted to the dark, staring up pointlessly at the drapery over his bed.
Finally the young earl gave up the ghost. No sense trying to sleep when it's not happening. He lit the oil lamp which sat by the bed, and took out the book of Grimm's fairy tales that he'd tucked into the drawer, and began flipping through the pages at random.
He was suddenly taken aback when a familiar countenance seemed to jump out at him from a page. Sebastian… He flipped back to where he'd seen the full page illustration. It wasn't Sebastian, of course. It was a girl, as a matter of fact. She was depicted with lustrous dark hair and strong cheekbones, and laid out in repose, making him think of Sebastian after the accident. How helpless he looked… it felt wrong to see him like that.
The illustration was for Sleeping Beauty. Ciel began to read in the middle of the story, having read it many times before. The prince had fought his way through untold dangers and hardships to be at his true love's side, and wake her with a kiss. Wouldn't it be nice if things were that easy? Ciel wished he knew where Sebastian was. It couldn't hurt to try. Sebastian was a demon, after all - a creature most people would dismiss as imaginary. Maybe fairy tale methods would work on a creature out of a fairy tale.

"Will, he's reading it!"
"Mmff?"
Grell jostled his superior's shoulder companionably. "Come on, Will, at least try to be a little interested in your work. It makes the time go by so much faster!"
"…and can get you into a lot of trouble if you're too interested in your work for the wrong reasons.."
"Oi! What's that supposed to mean?"
"Just that you shouldn't wake me for something that doesn't actually require me to be awake."
"I can think of a lot of things I could do to you that wouldn't … require you to be awake…" Grell purred, tracing a finger down the inside of Will's forearm.
Will ignored the sudden lurch of excitement between his legs and pulled his arm away irritably. "And then when you need me to be at my most alert, I'll be falling asleep. Try to think ahead, please, Grell." He turned back over and burrowed into his sleeping rug.
Grell pouted prettily as he returned to staking out Ciel's window.
A moment later he was shaking Will again "Dammit Grell, what is it now…" He was cut off by a hiss from his subordinate. "Shhhh!"
He came fully awake. Grell gestured mutely toward the window.
Claude Faustus.
Bloody demons!

"I see your poor manners haven't changed. What do you mean by intruding on me in the middle of the night?"
"Time is relative here, my lord. I noticed your light was on, and wanted to make sure all was well."
"I… don't like losing games. It bothers me. I was going over chess strategies."
"As taught by the Brothers Grimm? Where did that book come from, may I ask?"
"I found it on the bed. I actually thought you might have left it."
"I see.. a secret admirer, then. Do you know how incredible it is that anyone but you and I would be able to come close enough to leave a book in this place?"
"Of course I bloody well don't, fool! You haven't told me what this place is, or where it is, or let me leave it!" Suddenly Ciel's fury at his ridiculous circumstances came to the forefront. "And…" He turned his coldest glare on the hapless demon. "I want my bloody butler back!"
Claude did not seem phased by the young lord's temper tantrum. In one step he reached the bed, grabbing a fistful of the boy's nightshirt and plucking him off the soft coverlet. Ciel found himself staring into a very angry pair of demon eyes.
"Listen, you little sod! You will stop your puling about your damned butler. Your butler wanted you dead, which is the original and only reason for your current sad state of affairs. I am doing everything in my power to make things better for you. Frankly, I am not doing it because I like you, or because I am in the habit of doing good deeds. I am doing it because I want your soul. Because your soul is worth the trouble. If it were not, you'd have been a stain on the carpet long ago."
Ciel stared mutely at the furious Claude, not quite daring to say anything back. Not quite daring to move. Luckily, a distraction presented itself.
"Well, I thought Sebastian was cute, but look at this… there's another one!" Grell burst in the open window, tossing his extravagant red locks exuberantly. He began a slow, slinky walk towards the demon who was still holding the boy up by his nightshirt. "…aaaand… " The shinigami flicked the bridge of Claude's glasses over his nose playfully. "…. he's got spectacles! Oooh, you know just what the ladies want, don't you, you saucy demon!"
Less ostentatiously, William appeared behind Grell through the window, politely clearing his throat. "What my associate is trying to say, sir, is… you weren't planning on damaging that boy too seriously, were you? It seems that we may need him for something."
Claude took in the sight of two shinigami invading his home coolly. He seemed unfazed. "Well, that explains the book. I wonder why you would have left such a thing here?"
"…." said Grell.
"Indeed, the reason is that ……" confirmed Will.
The demon looked between the two of them with an expression of vague amusement. "I see. I'm afraid I can't be of any help to you gentlemen. Your agenda happens to contradict mine."
One of Grell's best subjects had been technique. Producing the chainsaw from the place where it hid was his particular specialty. Most shinigami telegraphed when they were about to draw. Not Grell.
Claude did not see the weapon until it had already removed his arm. Ciel found himself very briefly falling toward the floor, then he was grabbed by the collar and whisked out into the night, a vague notion dancing through his head that he had seen a disembodied arm reluctantly let go of his nightshirt and drop into blackness. Why must everyone grip me by my nightshirt?
"Let's get you out of here. I'm going to take you to Sebastian. You …. " Grell tried again. "Y-….. "
"Yes?"
"Never mind. I'm taking you to him."
The young lord was happy enough at the thought of being reunited with his butler, even asleep, that he was not going to question the reaper's odd silences, but… what had Claude said before? It was the reapers who had left the book. Why would they leave the book? They'd stopped talking when they tried to explain that, as well. As if someone had put a hand over their mouths.
There's something about the book, or what was in it, that they're prevented from saying.
Again, he thought of the woodcut of the Sleeping Beauty who had looked so like Sebastian to him.
Suddenly there was a small lurch and he was set down on the ground.
Sebastian lay on top of a large flat stone in the middle of a clearing in the woods.
The young earl rose to his feet and slowly, somehow irrevocably, approached his demon, feeling as if he had just become part of a performance of some kind of ritual - a dance he dare not deviate from. He is not just my demon. He is my love. The conviction with which he felt that surprised him.
I will wake you, my beloved.
He knelt beside Sebastian's prone form, bent over him. The kiss he planted on his butler's lips was at once chaste and possessive. He did not flinch at the coldness of Sebastian's lips. He only pressed his own lips more firmly down, wanting to imbue the demon with his own warmth. Please, Sebastian. Please wake. If you truly want to kill me, here I am.
He felt strong arms wrap around his torso, encircling his back. The kiss became warm, alive. Sebastian pressed his lips against his master's, briefly tasted Ciel's mouth with his tongue.
The earl plunged his own tongue deeply into his butler's mouth, heart leaping for joy, clinging shamelessly to the demon, breath coming fast. Oh, Sebastian, you have come back to me…
Then Sebastian pushed him back for a moment. "Look at me," the demon commanded.
Ciel was happy enough to have his butler back that he ignored the rudeness, and looked into the demon's eyes as requested. The boy was dressed for bed and did not have his eyepatch on.
The thing Sebastian saw made him shudder and then clasp his young master to him with renewed passion. "Even when I forsook it, you kept the contract alive… oh, Master…"
Disturbed, Ciel pushed back from the demon's embrace. "Forsook?"
An expression of dismay suddenly painted Sebastian's features. "I …. hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me, my lord."
Ciel's voice made a glacier seem like a roaring fire in comparison. "I was told you wanted to kill me. Is it true?"
"No, my lord. The opposite. It was… foolish of me. I discovered that I did not want you to die. I was trying to save you… from your eventual fate of being nothing but my meal."
The boy recited what Claude had told him, as if remembering a passage from a schoolbook. "If the human's commitment to the contract is weak, his soul and his life are automatically forfeit, the contract broken. If his commitment is strong, the demon sleeps for several hundred years, and the human is… free."
Ciel's eyes widened. "You knew it would happen that way. I didn't think you'd done it, because it wouldn't make sense for you to think you could kill me that way… but you did do it! You did it to free me."
For one stricken moment, the young earl simply stared at his demon, taking in the implications of the sacrifice Sebastian had meant to make.
Then he slapped him. Hard.
Then he slapped him again. And again.
"Fool! Idiot! Nincompoop! Numbskull!"
Ciel strode angrily around the demon, who was kneeling down on the ground, patiently awaiting whatever further punishment his young lord wished to dole out.
"You do understand, don't you, that apart from the fact that I wouldn't have bloody well summoned you in the first place if I'd wanted that…"
He grabbed Sebastian's head by the hair, looking sternly down into his eyes. "… you do understand that there was already another demon moving in on your territory, directly you were not there to protect it?"
The look of horror and desperation on Sebastian's face made Ciel feel just the tiniest bit sorry for him, which made him slap the demon even harder.
The two stared at one another. Ciel's face painted with betrayal and anger, Sebastian's with entreaty and remorse.
Then the boy began to cry.
The demon held out his arms and enfolded his young master in his embrace, stroking the soft bluish hair.
"Oh, Sebastian…" Ciel sobbed against his chest. "If you ever abandon me again, I will find a way to damn well kill you."

The two shinigami melted silently into the night, leaving the tumultuous couple to themselves.
"You got all the souls?"
"Safe and sound!" Grell flashed his toothy grin at his superior.
"Thank God."
"Is there one?" The red shinigami cocked his head at Will curiously.
"How the Hell should I know? I'm certainly not going to thank the bloody demon that made the mess in the first place."
"So if you're thanking God… would it be God who made a twelve-year-old boy fall in love with a 3000-year-old demon?"
"I swear you keep bringing that up just to fluster me. Please stop."
"Oh, but you're so cute when you're flustered!"
The sounds of friendly banter between the reapers faded into the night as they returned to central dispatch, and all was silent.

A/N: Don't ask me why, but I love pointing out just how horribly wrong my favorite pairing is. I also think that's just about how Will would react to it.
Just to be clear in case I didn't get it across, the curse was entirely real and Claude was totally not lying - he swooped in to get Ciel's soul because he knew Sebby had done the curse - he just didn't get why Sebby did the curse because he didn't know how committed Ciel was or the dynamic between the two of them. Originally as mentioned before, this was kind of meant to take place during Season 1 before the memory loss, and be a bit of a prequel to Season 2. I screwed that up rather badly with Chapter 8, but you'll see… it's worth it.
Cumming this weekend… *dies* oh, I didn't just type that.
Coming this weekend… PORN! XD
Romantic, mature porn. No, really!
