Chapter 6: Afraid to See
Caught completely by surprise, Tsukune rubbed his still-stinging cheek. His brow furrowed in a mix of anger and confusion. “What the hell was that for?” he demanded.Kurumu rolled her eyes in exasperation. “Don’t play dumb. You’re clueless sometimes, but you’re not that dense.”Tsukune thought for a moment, remembering what Kurumu had said just before she slapped him. “You know…?”“About everything you did with the other girls,” she confirmed. “With just a kiss, a succubus knows about her partner’s experience.” Her eyes bored into his. “Outer Moka, I expected; inner, too, given the bite marks. But the whiny witch and the snow-skank, too?”The young man reddened. “Things with Yukari just sorta happened…” he tried to explain. The young woman fixed her date with an incredulous stare. “What, did you trip and fall dick-first into her pussy?” she retorted. “Did things just ‘sorta happen’ with Mizore too? Were you planning for things to ‘sorta happen’ with me?”“Well… no… but…”Kurumu rolled her eyes again. “Why give me, or Mizore, or Yukari, false hope, then?” Her eyes took on a hard edge. “I warn you not to trifle with a girl’s emotions, especially if she’s a succubus.”Tsukune shook his head. “I’m not! It’s just… I want to be fair to everyone. Y’know, give everyone her turn.”The young woman snorted and folded her arms. She sensed they were making a bit of a scene, but she decided she didn’t particularly care at the moment. “You know that ‘giving us each a turn’ sounds pretty callous, right? Like you just want to collect our virginities like they’re trophies.” Watching Tsukune’s face fall prompted Kurumu to lighten up a bit. “I know you’re not that kind of person, Tsukune, but if I didn’t…”The young man nodded. “You’re right – it did sound really callous that way. After going so far with Yukari, though, I didn’t want to feel like I left anyone out or like I was playing favorites. What I did with her made me realize I… I like all of you.” He dared to look at his date at this point, contrition written on his face. “I guess it’s true that I did want to do… this and that… with all of you. It still wasn’t planned, but it wasn’t unplanned either.”Kurumu blushed and sighed. “What you said… puts me in a bit of a spot, y’know? I’d like to do that with you too,” she admitted. “I’d be lying if I said otherwise.” She bit her lip and looked at the now-fascinating sand she’d buried her toes into. “But in some ways, you’d be doing it only because you felt like you should, like it was some kind of duty. I don’t want that, especially since I’ll be the last one… to ‘complete the collection.’”“Did you forget?” Tsukune asked with a frown. “I wanted to have this date with you last weekend, but you declined.”Kurumu shifted uncomfortably. “Oh, right,” she replied softly. “Girl issues.”“I would’ve wanted to… y’know… have you… then, if not for that,” he continued, desperate to make his point. “I really do like you – you’re sweet, brave, strong, and gorgeous.”Kurumu couldn’t repress her giggle on hearing such words from him, words she’d longed to hear for so long. “Given what I am, I guess it’s hypocritical of me to judge you too harshly for… enjoying the opportunities that the others offered,” she replied, the last remark garnished with a naughty smirk and a sidelong glance at Tsukune.“I’m sorry you’ll end up last,” the young man apologized. “It wasn’t by design, but it can’t really be helped now.”“I’m sorry I slapped you,” the young woman apologized in return. “It was just such a shock to find out about… everything… like that.” Kurumu reached out and took Tsukune’s hand gently. “I like openness and honesty; so no more secrets, okay?”Tsukune nodded. “I don’t know how to tell the others, though. Won’t it hurt them? Will it sound like I’m bragging, or like I took advantage of them?”The young woman favored her date with a sad smile. “I don’t think I can answer that for you, Tsukune. Like I said, I appreciate openness and honesty, so that’s what I recommend.” She squeezed his hand gently.Tsukune smiled at his date. “So you’re not mad at me anymore?” he asked tentatively.Kurumu pursed her lips in thought as she formulated her response. “Only a little,” she finally replied, “and mostly because you kept it a secret, even though I understand your reasons.” She leaned in to give him a peck on the cheek. “Don’t worry, though; I’m having enough fun that I can forgive you.”Tsukune sighed with relief that they’d managed to talk things through without either of them getting upset. A quick glance around the beach, though, informed him that their spat, and probably the very public kiss before it, had drawn a lot of attention from other beach-goers. “Maybe we should cool it for a bit,” he suggested. “We don’t want to get thrown off the beach.”Kurumu nodded. “Good point. What now?”Afer a moment’s thought, Tsukune grinned and answered, “I have an idea: let’s see if we can build a sandcastle.”~~~~~The afternoon hours passed in delightful busywork for Tsukune and Kurumu as they constructed a sandcastle together. Their sculpture drew the curious glances of passersby as the structure took shape. Much to their mutual relief, the teens both thought the other was enjoying the project, rather than finding it juvenile; Kurumu, for her part, thought that any childishness now would likely be balanced by the “adult” things she wanted to do with Tsukune later. The thought brought a blush to her cheeks.Unfortunately, the tide rose faster than the castle, and all too soon the waves were lapping about the foundations, undermining the structure’s stability. The eroding waters worked quickly to collapse one side and defied even their frantic efforts to reinforce it. The two tried to dig a moat to divert the waters, but to no avail. Finally, Tsukune shook his head in frustration. “It’s no use,” he declared. “Looks like we won’t be able to finish.”Kurumu shrugged. “That’s okay; it was still fun,” she replied with a giggle. To reinforce the point, she leaned up to kiss Tsukune’s cheek. “Everything we make together means the world to me. I broke down last year when the Security Committee tried to shut us down, remember?”Tsukune paled at the reminder of the Newspaper Club’s darkest hour. “Yeah, they tried to make us… b-burn… all our papers,” he stammered softly. Speaking the word “burn” threatened to trigger some awful, ugly memories within the young man; he shuddered as he fought them down.Alarmed, Kurumu wrapped her arms around her date comfortingly. “Oh, Tsukune, I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I shouldn’t have brought that up. Idiot,” she chastised herself. Their sandcastle succumbed to the waves’ ravages and crumbled. They stood there, beside the remains of their sandcastle, for several long minutes while Tsukune pulled himself together. The setting sun painted the sky with its fiery orange and yellow. The rising wind tugged at Kurumu’s hair and whipped the ocean’s waves before it; the waves roared in protest before crashing onto the sand and around the teenagers’ feet.Tsukune breathed deeply. “I suppose we should pack up,” he commented as he noticed many of the other beach-goers doing so.Kurumu nodded in agreement. “I’m starting to get a little hungry, too,” she informed him as they shook the sand from their blanket.“I think there’s a couple different stands more towards town. We’re probably too sandy for anywhere nicer,” Tsukune pointed out sheepishly.Kurumu shrugged; Tsukune tried to ignore how certain other parts of her moved when she did that. “We’ll need to head into town anyway to find somewhere to stay,” she reminded him.Tsukune’s face twisted into a rather irritated expression. “Right. That bus driver’s not very reliable, is he?” the young man groused.Finished packing their things, the two teens folded down the umbrella they’d rented and put on the clothing items they’d removed when they arrived – Kurumu’s sundress and Tsukune’s shirt. The young woman took her date’s arm, bringing a blush to both their faces as they walked towards town, which was beginning to light itself for the night.~~~~~Dinner, like lunch, proved a simple affair – a large bowl of noodles bought from a stand in town and shared on a nearby bench. Passersby occasionally looked askance at the couple sitting close together, still half-covered in sand; but, their curiosity sated upon determining the teens were on a date, they moved on. Occasionally, someone’s glance would linger on Kurumu’s shapely form, but a warning glare from Tsukune would encourage those people to direct their attention elsewhere.Once they finished eating, Tsukune pointed at a nearby intersection. “I recognize that street from the last time I was here,” he remarked to his date.“With inner Moka?” asked Kurumu.Tsukune nodded. “We visited a dance club before finding a hotel. We had to stay overnight that time, too, because of the bus driver’s weird schedule.”Kurumu stared at Tsukune as if he’d just transformed into an S-class supermonster. “Inner Moka… danced?” she queried, voicing her internal attempt to piece together the two incongruous images. The young man chuckled. “It was pretty surreal,” he admitted. “Everything that happened that night was surreal,” he added, face flushing. Kurumu merely hummed and let him stew in his discomfort. “The hotel we stayed in… had cheap one-night rates… because…” He trailed off.“A love hotel?” Kurumu stepped in, a teasing lilt in her voice. “If that’s what you want for tonight, I won’t object.”Tsukune swallowed. “Well, it’s the best choice,” he explained. “It’s not far, and it’s, um, in my budget.” Barely, he added silently. I didn’t expect to stay overnight, so I’ve had to skimp on our meals too. I suck at dating.Kurumu beamed. “That sounds great,” she reassured him, sensing his self-doubt. “As long as I’m with you… we could stay in a cardboard box for all I care.”Outwardly, Tsukune laughed, but inside he felt his heart leap at such a statement. Hearing her declare her commitment to him in that way gave him hope that he might be able to work things out with his four would-be girlfriends, if they all felt just as strongly. Striding with purpose and a spring in his step, Tsukune led the way to the hotel. When they arrived, the young man felt relieved that the lobby was as empty as the last time, not to mention that he’d actually managed to find the place without getting lost. Out of the corner of his eye, he caught the young woman on his arm taking in the décor. Faint pink stained her cheeks, and Tsukune remembered her mother Ageha telling him, “Kurumu may act suggestively, but she’s actually quite inexperienced.” His face red, Tsukune resolved not to push her further than she was willing, though he suspected that she was plenty willing, but simultaneously nervous.Their wait at the front desk wasn’t long. Tsukune frowned when he saw the same creep who’d ogled Moka two weeks ago. Just my luck, he grumbled to himself. The clerk flashed a grin of recognition. “Welcome to our humble establishment again, young sir,” he greeted with a partial bow. “Your taste in women is as exquisite as before,” he added, a lascivious glance lingering over Kurumu, who folded her arms across her bosom protectively. You cock-blocking son of a bitch, Tsukune growled inwardly as he processed the intent of the attendant’s “compliment.” If Kurumu hadn’t already known about me and Moka, that comment may have angered her to the point of storming out. Is this guy trying to lose business?“If you plan to continue… patronizing this establishment,” the desk-man continued with a leer, “might I interest you in a membership plan? Each night you stayed here would be discounted and every tenth visit would be free of charge for such a loyal client.”Tsukune glowered at the man’s uncouth, suggestive tone. He doesn’t need to rub the nature of this establishment in other people’s faces, he thought. “No thank you,” he declined, forcefully enough that he might be considered rude; but Tsukune found he didn’t give a shit what this sleazeball thought of him. “We’d simply like a room for tonight – one with a shower,” he added, “unless you want us to track sand everywhere and leave a heap in the bed.”“It’d be a total pain to clean,” chimed in Kurumu. The hotel employee sighed and rolled his eyes as he traded the room key for Tsukune’s assorted yen notes. With one final discomfiting smile, he bade them good evening. “Have a… pleasant… stay,” he added, with unnecessary emphasis as they headed for the elevator.Once inside, Kurumu shuddered. “What a creep! I’d need a shower just from his staring,” she remarked, her face crinkled in disgust. “I just know he’s gonna fantasize about me while rubbing one out later.”Tsukune squeezed her hand reassuringly. “Forget about him,” he soothed. “He’s just jealous.”Kurumu smirked. “Oh, I’m sure,” she agreed. “You player, you,” she teased, “bringing so many different girls to a place like this.”“Just two,” the young man replied defensively. “After tonight, no more – not after how that jerk looked at you and Moka like pieces of meat.” He scowled.“Forget about him,” Kurumu echoed. “He’s just jealous.” The young woman kissed her date on the cheek. Her heart raced in anticipation of where this elevator was taking her – the place where she and her beloved Tsukune would finally, finally become one._______________________________________________________________________________________________
