Heartfelt Interference
Chapter Six
Age 13
The weekend had passed much quicker than you wanted to believe. By the time Monday came around you had finally felt comfortable with the idea of leaving Rorsh and your new Eevee with one another. At least, you were confident that Rorsh wasn't about to toss the young eevee into a lake or something just because the younger pokemon had annoyed him. Maybe ignore him a bit but...well, that couldn't be helped. Thankfully the young eevee didn't really seem that confrontational. In fact, he seemed more interested in getting brushed and pet than the fact that you had been testing his strength with the games that you chose to play with them.
So you'd gotten up and ready for school on Monday feeling confident that it was going to be fine to leave them. You'd even gotten to the front door with your backpack on and everything without anything going wrong. It was when you'd gotten half way between your house and the corrals that there was a hitch in the plan.
Rorsh and Eevee were following right behind you.
You stopped and looked at them, confused. "What are you doing?"
"We are going to do the school thing," Rorsh supplied via mental voice as though it was an obvious thing.
"...I can't bring you to school with me guys," you tried to explain.
You could already feel the strain that telling them no was going to put on you. Suddenly the casual, good morning feeling was darkened. There was a tenseness in Rorsh's eyes that made you want to take a step back. Like he was about to metaphorically toss you over his shoulder and continue on with what he had planned for the day. Of course, with him seemingly learning psychic moves out of nowhere you weren't going to put it passed him. What made it even worse was the fact that Eevee looked dejected as though you had just crushed his dreams with your words.
"Ee...?" The youngest whined; it was obviously a question of 'why'.
"My teacher told me that I couldn't have you out in class again, Rorsh," you reminded him. "And I'm pretty sure that extends to you too, Eevee."
It felt strange not having a name for Eevee yet but nothing you could think of seemed right. Not just yet. Especially considering the fact that you had been faced with the possibility of him evolving whenever - just like Rorsh had. What if you named him Sky or something and he ended up wanting to be a vaporeon later on? Sure, names didn't always have to reflect what someone (even if that someone was a pokemon) was physically but...well, it kind of did in your mind after the wake up call Rorsh had given you. It made things neater that way and you had gotten exceedingly lucky with Rorsh's name and eevolution.
"Once you told me that students bring their pokemon with them to school. When I was there I saw none. If the classroom is the special area for humans, where do the pokemon stay?"
Somehow, Rorsh being this...formal feeling was strange. It felt like he was taking the long way around his real question in order to tickle your mind for as long as he could. Like he knew that you found his 'voice' pleasant with its low, sedated rumble.
"In their pokeballs," you answered, somehow feeling guilty over that concept.
You had never gotten a pokeball for Rorsh, or any other pokemon, because you had never needed one before. He lived with you on the pokemon ranch and was your partner in pretty much every way except for when it had come to school. It wasn't like you traveled through different regions as people your age often did. Nor was it like you had a plethora of pokemon to 'choose' from as though they were somehow supposed to be at your beck and call anyways. So you had never needed a pokeball for him which was why you had never wanted to bring it up. After all...what if he thought it was degrading? It wasn't like you could ever truly know what it would be like to be in a pokeball yourself so you had no idea if he would have even remotely enjoyed it.
What did pokemon do while they were trapped in their balls anyways? Did they cease to exist as a conscious being or was there some sort of recognition to what was going on around them? Would that make it better...or worse? It obviously wasn't torture given that other pokemon didn't seem to mind but...well, it still felt strange to you. Especially now that you could hear him almost as easily as you could hear another human being.
Rorsh's huff and roll of his eyes drew you out of your wandering thoughts. You looked to the two of them and noticed that Eevee had tilted his head. You got the distinct impression that he was questioning what a Pokeball even was.
"It's a device that allows humans like me to...store pokemon, like you, in extremely small areas to carry around with us wherever we go. Like bedrooms on the go, I think."
"I will not be caged," Rorsh's tone was completely serious and determined.
"I know. I never thought you would, it's why I never bought one for you," You smiled down at him. "But it means I haven't been able to bring you to school. And I still can't, okay? So you have to stay here."
He looked up at you with a sharp expression, like he wanted to continue to argue. But instead he simply turned around and started back to the house. You knew that he'd made his choice but you also could feel that it was a heavy concern on his mind. With a quiet goodbye you started to the pathway that led to the corrals. What surprised you was that Eevee kept pace with you.
You stopped when you got to the corral and called for one of the ponyta that you had helped hatch in your first year of breeder training. She had finally hatched in the last third of your six months of training with fire type pokemon. So you had continued your habit of riding to school each and every day. But as you got onto Ponyta, Eevee jumped up with you. Ponyta reared in surprise and you slipped off as quickly as you could.
The ground was a lot better of a welcome than the flames which burned down the fire pokemon's back. Eevee yelped and once again jumped but this time it was off of the startled ponyta. Ponyta's neighing attracted the attention of nearby pokemon and you took in a deep breath, trying to calm down your heart. Eevee rolled in the dirt, putting out any spark which may have caught in his fur as you stood up. You held up your hands and made soothing noises as you walked in towards Ponyta. She calmed down rather quickly and you brushed your hands through her fiery mane once it had calmed down. Ponyta let out a sad, almost pathetic sound as she turned her head towards you, licking at your hands.
"Hey, it's okay. I'm not hurt." The look that Ponyta gave you was apologetic, so you continued to sooth her. "I know you didn't mean it. I know that Eevee just startled you, it's okay."
"Eeveee," Eevee said with his head bowed in apology himself.
You smiled at the little pokemon and nodded in appreciation. Eevee might not always think before he acted, or so you were figuring out, but you knew that he didn't mean any harm by it. Thankfully that got across to Ponyta and it didn't take long before you were able to climb back up on her back. This time she was prepared for Eevee to jump up on her and so were you.
You shook your head, red hair blowing over your shoulder in the wind. "You know you can't come to school with me. You're going to have to trot back with Ponyta when I go in."
Eevee shook his head. You sighed and ran your fingers through his fur as you shook your head. You knew better than most that he couldn't go to school with you; much less than Rorsh could go, in fact. At least you knew what to expect from Rorsh. You couldn't say the same thing about Eevee just yet.
Lightly, you pressed both of your knees into the back of Ponyta's shoulders. Ponyta lowered down slowly but you weren't slow at all when you put Eevee on the ground. Eevee made a move to jump back up but you put your hand on his chest, pressing down so he couldn't.
"I might not be a Trainer but if you want to stay with me and Rorsh, Eevee, you need to learn that sometimes you do need to listen to me. Do you understand?"
The little pokemon nodded, slowly but you could tell that he was having a hard time holding back. He really was a passionate little thing. With his cute face it was hard to tell him no but you knew that you needed to set boundaries up, especially this early on in the relationship. If you were going to raise him and work with him then he needed to know that sometimes you really did need to be in charge. After all, you couldn't have him getting into trouble or getting you into trouble. So as long as he let you call him yours, you were going to look out for him.
"Now, go back home. I promise I'll be back as soon as I can. If you want me home faster, just send Ponyta here to come get me at 2:45. No earlier, okay?"
Eevee nodded and you could see that he was soaking that in. With a small yip, you saw him turn around and head back to where your house was. As soon as you knew he wasn't going to make a running jump back at you and Ponyta, you pressed your knees right back into the back of Ponyta's shoulders for the command to rise. And so she did, just as smooth and steady as any champion. As she started to trot pass Eevee on the way to school, something slipped into your mind like a spider and it nearly caused you to slip.
'...miss you.'
That voice didn't come from Rorsh. In fact, it felt like it was from the eevee you just passed. You leaned into Ponyta as she picked up speed, calling out a long 'Ya' backwards towards Eevee. Instead of hearing the normal neigh, you practically felt a wave of comfort and something like the idea she'll be alright pass through your head with a distinctly feminine touch. One that definitely wasn't yours. It felt like a buzzing sound in your ear, like a swarm of beedrill were in the distance but it was gone almost as quickly as it came and left you feeling more perplexed than comforted.
__________________________________________________
You'd never really hated school but it did kind of sap more than eight hours of your day away, five days a week and who knows how many weeks a year. Normally the eight hours passed rather quickly but today did not seem to be one of those days. In fact, it was turning into a hellish place to be. You kept hearing whispers that didn't happen, kept feeling itches on the corner of your mind that you didn't know how to scratch, and kept seeing pulses of lights every time you closed your eyes. The world felt like it was spinning so fast under your feet, only yours, as though it were trying to throw you off the planet too. Which meant that by the time you had a break in the middle of the day, you felt quite sick.
Cold sweat started to line your skin as you gripped the bathroom sink. The round fixture had water running out in a thin waterfall just for the section you were in front of, splashing into the ring basin. You cupped some of the water into your hands and splashed your face. Everything in your body felt geared up for something. You weren't sure what it was but you knew that it wasn't a pleasant feeling. It was like you were being pulled at from all directions.
You stepped off of the trigger for the water and backed into the wall. Your head was pounding as whispers of things, even now, kept rushing past. They weren't all words either. Emotions, only quieted in a way, and pictures kept playing out before you. Heck, even a sense of colors every once in awhile. None of it made sense.
You slipped to the ground as you tried to reign whatever was happening in. You tried to block out all the bits that no normal sane person should ever experience. Of course, you weren't likely to go out and tell any of the teacher's what you felt because it would only cause more problems for you and your family. Besides, how would you explain whatever this was? You had no comparison for it. For all you knew, you were just going insane. It wasn't like you could depict what you were getting in; everything was 'moving' too quickly for you to get a lock on it. And somehow these whispers were deafening. A sea of them that rushed at you and left you breathless.
A bright pulse in front of you made you squeeze your eyes shut as you burried your head. It didn't help. Whatever this was didn't rely on your sense of sight to be seen. The light pulsed in front of you and suddenly you felt moisture on your cheek. You looked up through squinted eyes, pain pulsating in your head every time your heart beat. Before you sat Rorsh, easily taller than your hunched form even though he was trying to lower himself as well.
You gripped your legs tighter as you resisted the urge to reach out and hug him. Just because you were so uncomfortable didn't mean that you were going to make him miserable. After all, you weren't exactly in the concentrating mood and without that you weren't sure that you'd leave his fur undisturbed. It wasn't like it used to be as an eevee, where going against the grain was only a minor inconvenience. His fur functioned as a whole other type of sensory organ now which was very intune with movement and air currents. You could only imagine how it would feel for him to have his fur ruffled up. It would probably feel like a thousand pin pricks happening all at once over and over again with varying intensity. And so you really didn't want to put him through that. But the way he brushed up against your cheek with his own was comforting and it nearly did in your resolve.
No words needed to be said as Rorsh sat there patiently, waiting for you to be able to focus enough to stand up. The world didn't feel quite so fast now. Of course your head still pounded behind your eyes and you were off balance from all of that but at least it felt like you had something real to hold on to as you walked down the hallway. Students politely moved out of the way as you slowly and carefully walked, trying to keep your head down just incase the pulsing lights decided to flare up once more. Of course, Rorsh was at your side. Every time you paused, even if it was only a fraction of a second on a down step, his shoulder would brush up against your upper thigh. If you had the energy to smile down at him for the reminder and the comfort, not to mention the companionship, you would have. But really all you could do was manage to stay walking out of the school.
No doubt your parents were going to get a call from the office as you ignored the monitors telling you to stop. It was going to worry them, you knew that, but you also knew that there was no way that you could continue to go to class in the state you were in. It wasn't until you were off of the school grounds, however, that you realized that Rorsh had come alone. Or that he'd somehow gotten to the school in the first place.
You stopped at a raised flowerbed and sat on the concrete around it. You pulled your legs up so that they were hanging off the edge and sank your head to rest on your knees. Your chest squished against your legs as you held them close, turning your head and letting out a long deep breath. You could feel Rorsh's worry from beside you as the espeon tried to figure out some way to help you but there really wasn't anything you could tell him. Your head pounded and your tongue felt like it weighed at least a hundred bajillion pounds, thick and useless inside of your mouth. Plus it hurt to even look at him in the bright sunlight.
"Sorry," you managed to mumble, somehow, through the mental exhaustion that crept up on you in lieu of all the stimuli.
He looked at you with a slightly perplexed expression but 'said' nothing. Instead he sat beside you in pure companionship as you weathered out the hard point. You felt your cheek getting licked and nuzzled every so often as he tried to reaffirm not only you but himself that everything was going to be okay. At some point you were pretty sure that you'd forgotten about his new sensitivity and wrapped your arms around him in your half-asleep state.
It wouldn't be until after you woke up the next day, after your parents found the two of you and brought you home, that you'd remember doing it and feel guilty about putting him through such a thing. Though...you'd never remembered him having a negative reaction for the simple fact that there hadn't been on.
