Izuku feels drained and tired once he's finished crying but he honestly doesn't want to go back to sleep. He's been in and out of consciousness for the past two days according to his soulmate, Tōya, and if it's true that they can't lie to each other then he doesn't want Tōya worrying over him anymore. Still, Tōya is unbelievably warm, a natural side effect from him having a fire Quirk, and Izuku's eyelids are growing heavier by the second.
"Falling asleep on me, huh?" Tōya's voice is a low, pleasant rumble and Izuku forces his eyes open, panic starting to spiral through him.
"S-sorry, I d-don't-"
"It's fine, Izuku. I don't mind," Tōya interrupts him in a gentle and reassuring tone, and he cards his fingers through Izuku's hair. "We can talk more later."
Izuku nods faintly and his momentary panic vanishes as a blissful sense of peace washes over him. He closes his eyes for what feels like just a moment, and when he opens them again he realizes that a moderate amount of time has passed. Tōya still has him on his lap and he hasn't moved an inch, but his breathing is slow and steady like he's asleep.
Izuku carefully uncurls just enough to look up at Tōya and, yeah, he's definitely asleep. Taking a moment to study Tōya's face from this angle, Izuku's mouth curves into a faint, almost shy smile and he can't believe how lucky he is. He has a soulmate! Kacchan and everyone else who had told him otherwise had been wrong—so very wrong—because he has a soulmate! And Tōya doesn't care that he had been Quirkless!
It honestly shouldn't mean so much to him, that someone wouldn't care if he had a Quirk or not, but given all that he's been through because he didn't have one… It had taken All Might giving him One For All for even his own mother to finally support his dream of becoming a hero, and doesn't that sting a hell of a lot more now? Izuku frowns and gives a slight shake of his head to get rid of those particular thoughts, seeing as they will only ruin his current and fragile happy mood.
"Everything okay?" Tōya asks, and he's peering at Izuku with hooded eyes when Izuku looks back up at him.
"It's nice to finally have someone who doesn't care that I didn't have a Quirk," Izuku answers quietly and Tōya scowls slightly. "The day I was diagnosed as Quirkless was probably one of the worst days of my life, and I've had more than my fair share of days that came pretty close to how awful that day was since then," he says after a moment, and it's right then that he decides to spill everything to Tōya. It's only fair, after all, considering Tōya had shared his own past with Izuku.
Izuku doesn't even consider leaving anything out, and by the time he's finished, Tōya has the darkest expression Izuku has seen on his face so far. He looks positively murderous, the temperature around them noticeably warmer than before, and his irises are…glowing. Literally glowing. That's kind of cool, Izuku thinks to himself, and then he wonders if it's because Tōya has a fire Quirk.
"You shouldn't have had to experience any of that, ever." Tōya's voice is dangerously low and laced with anger as he speaks, and his irises glow a little brighter. "And I promise that I won't let anyone treat you like that ever again, Izuku."
Izuku doesn't get a chance to react to Tōya's fierce declaration beyond blinking as the door to the room creaks open and a woman he doesn't recognize walks in. She looks up from the clipboard that she's carrying as she enters and stops short just a few steps away from the doorway.
"I should have expected as much," she comments rather wearily as she takes in the sight of Izuku on Tōya's lap. "I need to know if you have engaged in any intense physical activities with my patient."
"All I have done is comfort my soulmate," Tōya practically growls out while Izuku takes a few seconds to figure out what the woman seems to be implying, and then he blushes profusely once it clicks.
"Please understand that I had to ask," the woman says quite curtly, and then she approaches the bed. "Now, you should be able to move around since Recovery Girl came by last night and gave you her strongest dose of healing while you were asleep but I have to warn you that the damage you took this time was beyond words."
"What exactly does that mean?" Tōya tentatively asks, and his arms tighten a little around Izuku.
What if means, come to find out, is that One for All is destroying the ligaments in his arms along with his bones and muscles, and it could result in the permanent loss of Izuku's arms if he injures them any further. It hurts to hear, especially now, and a sort of numbness settles over Izuku following the woman's departure once she removes the casts on his arms. He doesn't even register that he's gotten a letter from someone he had saved as he stares down at his arms, now firmly wrapped in fresh bandages.
"If being a hero is what you truly want, Izuku, then we'll find a better way for you to use your Quirk," Tōya whispers, and Izuku wants to believe that he means it but it feels like his dream is crumbling around him.
"I want to go home for now, Tōya," Izuku says faintly as he curls back up against Tōya and tucks his head underneath his chin. "I want to go home and see my mom."
"Whatever you want, Izuku," Tōya says like it's a promise, nose nuzzling into Izuku's hair.
"Will you come with me?" Izuku asks after a moment.
"As I said earlier, Izuku, I have no intention of leaving you, and I mean it," Tōya responds firmly, and some of the numbness Izuku is feeling ebbs.
