The ring of summoners began a few hundred yards ahead of me, but unlike my previous encounter a few seconds could be spared to take a better stock of my plan for the coming battle. First, I managed my stride. Where before I had either gone for great leaps or a sprint that by the very nature of the strength involved set me into a series of mini leaps, I paid more attention to the natural elemental magic that came so easy to me as the Storm Dragon. Unlike the language of magic I had used in the previous battle there was no chanting, no gathering of mana to release in an effect, it was as if the winds responded to my will. I'd often seen Miao Ying travel on a small storm cloud, supported by wind and lighting, and it proved surprisingly easy to replicate. Soon enough I was pressing forward at the speed of gale force winds directly into the enemy line.
The first of the angels, strange sleek white beasts that resembled animated suits of armor more then a living creature. Brilliant yellow energy wings and swords made it clear they were nothing so mundane as they streaked in through the air at a rapid pace. Finally able to let loose without worrying about needless death, I decided to have a little fun with it. The first trio of angels dived in together, likely too fast to react for most, but for me they proved no more difficult then the soldiers to handle. Stepping in to the first to enter range I coiled my body in preparation for a proper punch from my right, enjoying the satisfying feeling of the fist breaking through the magical plate without the slightest hesitation as the angel burst into tiny shards before disappearing entirely as the magic faded away. As the next two find their way into my reach fingers dig into their breastplates before bringing them together with enough force to leave them crumpled masses which quickly begin to fade away.
A score more of the beasts are approaching from rest of the circle around the village, but most are still quite a distance away, far too late for the first of the casters I reach. These men were sent on an mission involving the slaughter of innocents, true, but like most who go to war they probably believe they are doing good, what must be done. It takes a little more time and effort then turning them into a red mist, but the magic to save their lives is simple enough- Sleep. A spell learned by novices- it will only last a few minutes, fails against foes of any real power, and requires touch. However it consumes almost no magic and should provide sufficient for a battle like this. Summoned by a single word in the language of magic commanding them to enter magical slumber, a gentle touch, and he is crumpling to the ground like a sack of very weary potatoes.
The second falls just as easy before several more angels start to close in. My fist clenches again, but rather then preparing a blow I'm gathering the power of the storm, a moment later releasing a wide stream of lighting that consumes several of the approaching angels and leaves smoking heaps to begin fading from existence. The casters themselves are not idle, those close enough have begun to weave their own direct attack spells and fling them towards me. Many of them are slow enough to avoid without effort, but not all. In particular there seems to be a bolt of light energy that travels with impressive speed, its impact leaves an impression of heat but little more. Vaguely uncomfortable, with no pain. I stop bothering to dodge the spells and find the other effects similar. An impact like getting a light slap on the back. A tingling sensation even less noticeable then the rest which I easily intuit as a solid bolt of lightning traveling at unrealistically slow speeds.
Sleep. Sleep. Sleep. They fall one after another, panic starting to spread through their ranks. It's still only been a handful of seconds but in that time they can already see the battle turning against them. "Principality of Observation, attack!" The words are screamed somewhere to my left, watching as the leader's summon raises up from behind the small hill that had concealed it. Several times the height of the other angels, at least 15 feet, it is made up of sweeping lines and looks more elegant then the almost boxy angels I'd faced so far. Counterintuitively it wields a mace that almost looks mundane save for the blue glow around the head, rather then the glowing energy swords of its compatriots.
I turn to face the new target, aware that the grin has only grown on my lips. This is fun! I've never felt so powerful, so alive. Calmly waiting for the attack I reach up to catch the head of the mace with my right hand as it swings down towards me, feeling only a solid thump into my grip as my left hand raises up to grip the long mace near the middle. A quick leap into the air to give me the reach I need and his own mace is shattering his helmet in a glittering sprinkle of light, collapsing on the spot before joining his allies in nonexistence. Several more of the angels reach me and come apart in a fury of blows.
It was decision time. The leader possessed a sealing crystal with a powerful angel concealed within, in the original show he'd summoned it and Ainz had disposed of it with a black hole spell to the amazement of everyone. I could do something similar, make a more powerful impression on Gazef and Ainz.. but I was disinclined to do that for two reasons. One, the crystal would be more valuable to me, particularly for study, if there was still a powerful spell contained within. Two, I remember someone was watching this battle with scrying magic- pretty safe assumption it was high ups in the Slane Theocracy, though I didn't actually remember. I was also unsure if showing my power to Ainz and making him more aware of my power would make him more or less likely to decide to move against me.
A quick leap propelled by a powerful gust of wind at my back closed the distance between us in an instant even as he was still staring in shock at the dispersed greater angel, not yet even reaching towards his greatest prize. A brief incantation of sleep, a gentle touch... and nothing happened. Well, it was a spell any novice sorcerer could learn in the Warhammer world, it only made sense even the moderately strong would be too much for it. Instead I cast a very different kind of sleep, my fist conecting with his jaw with a solid impact which sent him sprawling to the ground but groaning and still conscious. With the vastly different physical durabilities in this world it was hard to judge what would soundly knock someone out without killing them. Kneeling, I delivered a quick jab that sends him into unconsciousness, still breathing, though who knows what kind of damage had been done. It would have to do.
Glancing around me and confirming those I'd put to sleep were still out, and they were, my attention turned to take in the remainder of the forces that were now fleeing. Gazef and his forces were sallying out to meet them despite my request that they stay with the villagers, but it made sense, he didn't want to see them escape. Two of the men seemed to have been dispatched to round up the sleeping casters, they were already binding the hands of the first. His men were professionals, and Gazef had put up a solid fight even when they were all unified against him, I had little doubt that he could safely clean up the situation. Reaching into his robe to lay hands upon the sealing crystal I quickly tuck it away into my pocket space without ever revealing it.
After one final glance to ensure everything is still in order I begin my return to the village, rolling my shoulders, enjoying the simple pleasure of the adrenaline still coursing through me. It was one thing to have some concept of the power that has newly been bestowed upon you, it was another entirely to exercise it, and this time without the anxiety of another's death lurking beneath the smallest mistake. It wasn't the pyrrhic victory of the village, but a total rout, and it felt good. It even let me forget my nerves about the approaching conversation for a few seconds.
The feeling didn't last. As I grew near to the building that had served as a place of shelter for the surviving villagers the door burst open, several of the braver villagers emerging with a series of questions. I raised my voice over the din of questions, my voice cutting through their own. "Hear me! The battle is decided but not yet over. Their leader is defeated and their line is shattered but the battle continues on. Remain here where it is safe until Kazef returns." The questions resume, tumbled one atop another, but my raised hand brings them to silence. "Where is Lord Ainz? It is urgent that I speak with him."
Instead of the answer I'd expected Albedo's voice rings out from her position flying above me. I'm pretty sure she hadn't been there before, invisibility? Teleportation? Either way, Ainz is nowhere to be found. "Lord Ainz has important tasks that demand his time, he has tasked me to speak with you." More important then meeting with the first player he has found in this new world? Clearly a lie. More likely she had been concerned for his safety and demanded he retreat back to Nazarick while she stayed to get the information required. For that matter there could be half a dozen floor guardians hiding in invisibility or ready to teleport in at a moments notice. My heart was thudding away madly, stress defense allowed me to remain in control, but it didn't make the situation fun. Her voice is charged with authority "There is a small clearing a 100 yards to the North. We will speak there." It isn't a question, and I'm not inclined to argue. Watching as she turns to fly the small distance I fall into a casual pace. Soon enough I find the location, Albedo standing waiting with axe in hand braced against the ground. Her stance isn't exactly hostile, but I surely wouldn't call it friendly. Her face is unreadable beneath her helmet. My pace ended perhaps 100 feet away, though I knew she could close that distance in a fraction of a second every instant might help. Her wonderful scent was far less intense from this distance, a fact that was a bit disappointing and probably for the best.
"You said you had information of importance to Lord Ainz Ooal Gown. He would have me hear your words." As if he wasn't listening in right now. From the safety of Nazarick and his scrying mirror or floating above with Perfect Unknowable active I didn't have the slightest doubt that he was watching and communicating with Albedo via message.
My head inclines slightly in a nod of respectful greeting and acknowledgement without bowing too far, attempting to toe the line between seeming respectful without crossing into submission. My love spot is again flaring at full power with a focus on inspiring trust and the belief that a peaceful approach is the best path forward. I am thankful for my decision to pick up Networked Glamour Manipulation for the flexibility it grants love spot. Instinctively I reach deep into another well of power I've not had time to fully examine but can only be my Solar Exaltation. The performance excellency charm aids me as well- Not mind control, which would likely be deflected by Albedo and Ainz's defenses, but a number of subtle changes to my delivery. From body language, to tone, to cadence, the gift of perfection aids my words. "Indeed I do. I believe we have a great deal in common and it is my desire to see an alliance, or at the very least a truce, formed between us. Before I move forward I wish to confirm that the common footing I perceive between us is truth. In furtherance of that goal I propose telling facts about where I come from and all I ask in return is a response that confirms my words are properly understood. If you need time to confirm the information, or gain permission to reveal it, I am willing to wait. Is this acceptable to you, as an initial starting point?"
Observing Albedos' reaction is quite difficult to judge with her helmet on, not an inch of skin visible. There is a brief but noticeable hesitation before she responds, long enough to confirm my suspicions that she is conferring with Ainz before responding. Her voice when she speaks is friendly enough, if I didn't know her better I would think it comforting. "Your terms are acceptable, at least to begin our conversation. Please begin."
Naively when I'd planned out this conversation in my head I had thought that I would be speaking with Ainz, perhaps even without anyone else listening in, and would be able to convey things a little more.. directly then this situation would allow. It wouldn't do to bring up the fact that they were all previously part of a game, there is no telling where that would lead. It was unlikely to work in my favor. "I'm going to begin by confirming that we share common knowledge not found in this world. I will list several locations and ask that Ainz provide a response as he sees fit. Asia, North America, and Europe."
Albedo's response is much shorter this time, a single word of confirmation. "Africa."
My smile is back, the relief I purposely express is genuine. The situation is far from over, it could certainly turn against me, but it seems they are going as well as expected. "Perfect. I knew the moment I saw the two of you that you were not from this place, your auras were completely unlike anything here. I had a strong suspicion that you were in a similar situation to me, and when he mentioned being a magic caster who knew little of the area.. It seemed quite clear he was as in need of information because he has only just arrived." A brief pause before I speak two words very clearly with emphasis. "Virtual reality."
"DMMO-RPG." She states the letters out clearly and distinctly rather then letting them flow together as casual parlance would dictate. "You state that you were able to see our auras and differentiate us from the locals?" As I'd hoped Ainz had latched onto a method to find his friends and other players that he lacked. Now I just had to make sure he understood that power would be entering his orbit willingly in the short term without spiking his desire to reach out and take it. I was relying upon the trust inspired by my lures and more then a little bit of luck.
My original plan had been to reveal more, the fact that I was from another world then Yggdrasil, but ultimately I decide to let that wait for our next meeting after I'd taken some additional precautions. Did lures work through scrying magic? I could only hope. Certainly the gifts of my exaltation would, combined with the earlier workings of love spot and the logic.. I had to hope it was enough, or things would get very bad very quickly. "Yes. The.. flavor of your magic was completely alien and I understood instinctually that you are not from here. To think that we would run into each other so quickly after we arrived! At this rate who knows how many players could be present... Well, for two of us to have run into each other by chance in an out of the way place like this there might well be thousands of us. By the virtue of your actions today, working to save villagers who have nothing of direct value to offer you, I see that you are someone I could work with. We are marooned in a strange world together, with unknown forces both local and recently arrived. For that reason I seek allies, both to provide security and information to each other. My proposal is a simple one, that we work together to pool our knowledge and learn everything we can about this world without doing too much to disrupt the locals. In situations like today, where innocent lives are on the line, I advocate that we work with as gentle a hand as possible. We do not yet know the power of the locals, but even if they are all as weak as those who we saw today the fact remains that there might well be scores upon scores of players in each nation."
The silence is much longer this time. It's only thanks to stress defense that I'm able to avoid dissolving into a nervous wreck. Finally after what feels like an eternity, but probably isn't even a minute, Albedo speaks. Her words are even warmer now, and if I didn't know how she felt about other players getting close to Ainz I'd have found the tone comforting. "Ainz Ooal Gown has graciously deigned to offer you to visit his home of Nazarick that we may discuss this matter further."
This time my nod is more of a bow, my face lit up with a smile. "Excellent! Excellent! I need a little time to handle a few matters on my end before I can do so, but it shouldn't be long. 24 hours should be sufficient. At that time I could travel to you, or if you'd prefer I could meet one of your subordinates here in this village 24 hours from now." This is the most crucial moment since I've arrived. With a little time I could make a number of preparations that should be able to handle even the worst of results from stepping foot inside Nazarick. If they "politely insist" that I come with them now.. the options narrow.
I don't need to see anything but her aura to know how much this answer displeases her, it radiates from her like a fog of anger. She likely felt that I'd spurned what she considered an overly generous offer from her Supreme Being. If she thinks of me as a human it must be all the worse. Her voice though remains light and friendly, a diplomat serving her ruler rather then her own emotions, as is befitting the Overseer of the Floor Guardians. "We will look forward to seeing you here again soon. Please do not be late for the meeting, we are very eager to continue this conversation."
It was done. Everything had gone the way I'd hoped, but that didn't dispel the nervousness that coiled inside. Tomorrow I'd be entering the belly of the beast.
