Aster rolled over in bed and picked up the cordless phone. She felt Haruka move up behind her while she brought the phone to her ear.
“Moshi, moshi,” she murmured. She sensed Vincent waking, which in turn woke Lucinda, and between her and him, everyone was at least partially awake by the time she finished her greeting.
“I want to speak to Taiyono,” an elderly female voice said. “It is very urgent.”
“One moment … who is this?” Aster was now completely awake. How had anyone known the name Vincent had borne ten thousand years ago?
“This is Chiba Gen,” she said. “You tell the famous cook he will do what his grandmother tells him. Tell him to meet me at Narita airport. I have news for him, and a surprise. We will be landing in four hours.”
The call disconnected, and Aster turned wondering eyes on her partner.
“That sure sounded like her,” he said. “She always did call me Taiyono. Why do you think it was so easy for me to get used to you all calling me that?”
“What do we do?” Usagi asked from where she was sleeping between Thomas and Mamoru.
“We rearrange things while she’s here,” Aster said softly. Her statement was met with several groans of disappointment.
Since they had defeated Chaos and Aster and Lucinda had returned from the Dark Kingdom, everyone had been sleeping in one room, along with some of the satellites. The rest of the satellites slept on the second floor, or in one of the other houses. Kojiro’s grandfather slept in one of the rooms on the second floor.
“I have an idea,” Kojiro said, one hand on Vincent’s hip possessively “Maybe we should introduce Taiyono’s grandmother to my grandfather … “
“Or mine,” Rei piped up. “Oji-san could keep her busy for the rest of their lives.”
“That’s settled,” Minako said, flipping her golden hair across Martin’s greenish chest pelt.
“We might as well get up,” Lucinda said, extricating herself from the sheets and rising to her feet. Several of the occupants of the room stared unabashedly at her nude body while she hunted up her sleeping kimono and put it on.
Aster decided to take matters into her own hands and get their attention off of her sister. She climbed to her feet and picked her way across the multiple futons in the room until she got to the floor next to the bathroom door. She clasped her hands over her head and stretched, jutting her bosom forward and her buttocks backwards.
Unabashedly, Robert and Martin whistled. Eduard sat up and started applauding. Joben grabbed a discarded kimono and tossed it to Aster.
She smiled at him, and then dropped the kimono onto the futon and walked into the bathroom, her ankle-length hair swaying in her wake.

With showers, dressing, breakfast, and alternate routes, it took them a little over four hours to reach the airport. It had been finally decided that Aster and Vincent would meet his grandmother, and bring her back to the compound, at least temporarily.
They entered the international terminal, which was bustling with people. Some were arriving to find out the fate of loved ones. Some were sent from companies to check on local offices. Still others were specialists coming to help rebuild the city.
While Vincent looked for his grandmother among the milling throng waiting for luggage, Aster found herself drawn towards a girl of about fifteen that was waiting in one of the seats, sitting stiffly. She had black hair tied up in two braids, and her heart-shaped face seemed familiar.
It wasn’t until she happened to look in Aster’s direction that Aster realized why she seemed familiar. The face, blue-black hair, and golden eyes belonged to one of the satellites that they had yet to find.
Aster walked over casually and sat down next to the young woman. She watched Vincent’s blonde head over the heads of the mostly Japanese people at the luggage carrel.
“So, where have you been hiding, Sailor Juliet?” she asked softly. She heard a sharp intake of breath, and sensed the girl looking at her.
“Sol?” she whispered.
Aster nodded her head ever so slightly, while she watched Vincent speak with a uniformed man.
Abruptly, Aster’s arms and lap were full of crying teenager.
At first, Aster wrapped her arms around the younger girl, but a stiffening and a hiss of pain made her move her arm from behind her.
“What’s your name, Juliet?” she asked while she rocked slightly and smoothed the hair of the sobbing girl.
“Virginia,” was the broken reply. “Virginia Knight.”
“Takeshi!” an old woman’s voice startled both of them into looking up.
Vincent was standing ten feet away with an elderly Japanese woman who strongly reminded Aster of Kojiro’s grandfather, Jishin.
“I’m sorry, Granny,” the girl in her arms said. “I … thought it was my brother, an’ then she was jus’ so understandin’ … “
Aster gently disengaged Virginia from her and put her into the seat next to her again. She stood up and bowed to the old woman.
“You must be Vincent’s grandmother,” she said. “I am honored to meet you. I am Fushida Aster.”
“The honor is mind, Fushda-san,” the old woman said, bowing. “I often thought that my Taiyono would have been a very beautiful woman. Thanks to you, I know now that I am right. You are of Chiba blood, yes?”
“Only some,” Aster said. “My grandmother was a Chiba, on both sides of my family. Taiyono and I both came to get you. The car is waiting outside.”
“Thank you,” the old woman said. “Taiyono, get our bags. I must see to Takeshi.”
“Bamboo?” Aster said inquiringly, looking at the girl next to her. “Do you bend without breaking? Are you stronger than anyone believes you can be?”
“I don’ know,” the girl replied.
“Come, Takeshi,” her grandmother said. “We must check you before we leave.”
“If it’s what I think it is,” Aster said. “We should wait until we get home.”
“What do you think it is?” the old woman asked her, her expression one of suspicion.
“She recoiled when I touched her back,” Aster explained. “My stepfather used to favor split bamboo when he disciplined me or my sister or my brothers. We have extensive first aid facilities and an MD at the compound.”
“You have your own doctor?” she asked.
“Not exactly,” Aster said. “He’s a psychiatrist by profession. He’s like family, despite being gaijin by birth.”
“You believe that I can trust him with my granddaughter?” she asked.
“I trust him with my children,” Aster said. “Shall we go?”
“Very well,” the old woman said. “I will be with him when he examines Takeshi.”
“I’m sure David won’t mind,” Aster said, smiling.
~*~*~*~
When they arrived at the Compound, Aster handed the young woman over to David Clark for treatment and examination, and then she went in search of Eiji.
Eiji was at the koi pond with a paper boat. He had fastened strings to the boat and he was showing ChibiUsa how to steer it on the pond. She was laughing hysterically because the koi in the pond were trying to suck the boat into their mouths to eat it.
“Eiji, I need to talk to you,” she said as she approached. “I think ChibiUsa can command the navy for a while.”
Eiji handed the strings to the girl and stepped away with Aster.
“We got a bit of a surprise at the airport,” Aster said. “Vincent’s younger sister is Sailor Juliet.”
“Juliet?” he asked, his eyes widening. “I hadn’t dared to hope, no matter what the Princess said about us all being there.”
“She’s with David right now,” Aster said. “She’s been beaten on her back, probably with a willow switch. That’s what Vincent’s father used to use on him. Also, given Vincent’s history with his brother, I believe that she may have been abused in other ways, as well. I don’t have to tell you to be her friend, first, Eiji. She doesn’t need a lover, yet. According to her grandmother, she’s only fifteen.”
“I understand what you are saying,” he said. “I disagree with your statement that she does not need a lover, but I will let her dictate the speed that our relationship develops.”
“Good man,” Aster said. “While David’s treating her back and examining her, I’m going to have the girls see who is her size, and what clothes they might want to give her. She doesn’t have anything appropriate for the climate or the culture.”
“If I remember correctly,” Eiji said. “Juliet was the same size as several of the satellites that are already living here. Finding her clothing should not be a problem.”
“Why don’t you do that, then?” Aster said. She could sense some alarm, and a feeling of urgency in her partner, and she needed to get to him and find out what was wrong.
“I will, thank you,” Eiji said.
Aster turned away from him and hurried to the side door of the house. As she reached for the handle, the door opened and Vincent stood on the other side.
“I just got a call from my father,” he said. “He’s lookin’ for Virginia, an’ he’s comin’ here to look for her. He said he’s bringin’ some o’ the boys.”
“That probably means Clyde,” Aster said. “Damn! I was hoping to give her and Eiji time to bond.”
“I got an idea,” Vincent said. “Eiji’s boat is down at the waterfront, an’ his family lives on th’ water in Chiba. Why don’ you have him take Granny an’ Virginia over to Chiba to stay with his family?”
“Excellent notion, partner,” Aster said, grinning. “Your father can hunt to his heart’s content, but unless he knows where they are, he doesn’t stand a chance. Gold eyes are common enough in Chiba, that he’s going to be laughed at if he describes her there.”
“I’ll tell Granny,” Vincent said.
“I’ll tell Eiji,” Aster said. “I’ll also tell him to stay there, for a while. He will get his chance to bond with Juliet, and they’ll be safe. We can introduce your grandmother to Ojii-san Hino when they get back.”

Nearly two days after his call, Russell Knight and two of his sons arrived at the Compound. Vincent did the correct thing, and met them at the gate.
//Who did he bring, Apollo?// Aster asked him mentally. She was inside, sending ChibiUsa and the other children outside to play in the back, with Haruka and several of the others to watch them.
//He brought Jedediah, my youngest brother,// was Vincent’s reply, and then a jolt of pure terror shot though the mental bond, and Aster had a vision of a large man getting out of a car.
//Taiyono,// she thought at him. //I’m coming. I’ll grab Sakura on my way.//
She tapped Joben on the shoulder and both he and Sakura rose to follow her to the front door.
On the front porch, Vincent was offering his hand to an older man who was dressed in a dark suit. The two younger men with him bore a familial resemblance, and they both looked up when the door opened and Aster stepped out.
“An’ who’s this, Vince?” the older man asked. “Is this your wife?”
“No,” Vincent said. “This is my wife’s adopted sister.”
“An’ what about that pretty little gal next to her?” one of the younger men asked.
Aster smiled. She was going to enjoy this SO much.
“He’s one of my lovers,” Vincent said, looking his father straight in the eye. “There’s him, an another man, an’ his wife.”
There was a long pause, and the older of Vincent’s brothers present, the infamous Clyde, threw back his head and roared with laughter.
“That’s a good ‘un, Vince,” he said, laughing. “You ain’t man enough for one woman, let alone two, an’ two men besides!”
“That ain’t why we’re here,” Vincent’s father said. “We’re lookin’ for a runaway. You got a little sister, Vince, an’ she done run away from home. Your granny disappeared at the same time, so we thought she brought her here.”
“There’s no members of Vincent’s family here,” Aster said from the porch. “We haven’t had any new residents since we brought home some orphans. You’re welcome to look around, Knight-san, but I must insist that your sons remain here, where I can watch them. We can bring out chairs and some refreshments.”
“An’ why are you givin’ the orders?” Russell Knight asked, frowning.
“Because this is my property,” Aster said, knowing that Mamoru would forgive her the lie.
“Ah see,” he said, still frowning. “An’ you live here?” He asked his son.
“Yessir,” Vincent said. He was still terrified. Sakura left Aster’s side to walk over and put his arm around his lover.
All three of the others frowned when they saw that, but they did not say anything.
“I’d be obliged for some hospitality,” the elder Knight said. “I hope y’all won’t take offense to my manner. I’m worried about my daughter, that’s all. She’s just fifteen, an’ I don’ know what kind o’ nonsense her granny’s been tellin’ her.”
“So you are very fond of her?” Aster asked.
“She’s a right handful,” Russell Knight said. “She’s always getting’ inta trouble an’ tellin’ lies.”
“Perhaps you should count yourself fortunate to be rid of her,” Aster said. “Since she is so much trouble.”
“It ain’t that,” he replied. “I’m her daddy, and I gotta be responsible for what she does ‘til she’s eighteen.”
“Look anywhere you like, as long as you are polite,” Aster said. “I’ll bring some refreshments out.”
“I ain’t allowed in?” he asked.
“You are,” she said. “Your sons are not. We are caring for some children that have been through a nightmarish ordeal, and are just settling down. The sight of too many strangers may frighten them unnecessarily. If you are going to come in, please remove your shoes in the entry.”
She went back into the house, knowing that Joben and Sakura would keep an eye on the younger Knight men. She felt Russell Knight following her, and watching while she removed her shoes again and put on her slippers. She found a large pair, and put them down in front of him.
“These should fit,” she said. “Please remove your shoes and put them on.”
She waited while he put the slippers on, and then led the way to the kitchen. She asked Usagi and Makoto in Japanese to put together some sandwiches and cold drinks.
“I’ll take them out,” Aster said. “You stay in here, or go out back with the children.”
“You really don’t trust them, do you?” Usagi said.
“I have no reason to,” Aster said. “Do as I say, hime-chan.”
She turned back to Russell Knight and watched him look around the well-appointed kitchen.
“You done all right for yourself, ain’t ya?” he asked.
“I am a member of a wealthy family, Mister Knight,” she replied in English. “As is the way here, I have increased my family’s wealth by a great deal, and I have used that wealth to take care of my friends. We have weathered a great disaster, here in Tokyo, and we will continue to survive. There is nothing anyone can do to stop us.”
“Why ain’t the government confiscated your resources?” he asked.
“Relief supplies are pouring in from outside the city,” Aster explained. “Fortunately, the disaster was confined to Tokyo itself. The government is pleased that there are some people that they do not have to worry about. They know that we have food and fuel stored, and we have taken in several orphans from the disaster.”
“You’re pretty proud o’ yourselves, ain’t ya?” he asked, looking back over his shoulder to peruse the living room, the pool visible through the doorway to the solarium, and the carved staircase that led to the upper floor.
“We have reason to be.” Aster said. “Let me take some food and drink out to your sons, and then I will be happy to show you the entire compound.”
She waited until Usagi handed her a tray with two empty glasses on it and a pitcher. Aster took them out to the front, and put them down on a small plastic table under one of the trees.
“Here’s something to eat,” she told Clyde. “I’d appreciate it if you would stay here in the front. We have children here who have been through an ordeal, and they are easily startled. I don’t want them traumatized again.”
“Mah boys’ll stay put,” Russell said. “How ‘bout that tour, now?”
“Of course,” Aster said. “This way, Mister Knight.”
Vincent’s eyes widened. Anyone that knew Aster would know that she had just delivered a terrible insult for her. If she meant any respect, she would have used san or sama.
Over the next two hours, Aster showed Russell Knight around all four buildings, even taking him into the basements, and showing him the tunnels that led from one building to another. Finally, Russell declared himself satisfied.
“I was sure that the first place that crazy old woman would run is to Vince,” he said as she led him past the play area and back to where his sons waited. He did not notice the very alert eyes that watched him. He did pause to watch Tori and Chimei sparring, but he had never noticed the red eyes that glowed from Aster’s shadow.
As she led him back to the front, she felt a surge of terror, and both of them heard a deep voice yell, a higher one shout, and then a meaty thud.
They came around the corner of the house to find Clyde on his back, with Sakura standing in front of Vincent in a defensive martial arts pose. Clyde’s nose was trickling blood, and his lip was split.
“What’s goin’ on here?” Russell demanded. “Clyde, I done tol’ you to behave yourself!”
“I did, Daddy,” the huge man said, rising to his feet. “This little pansy done attacked me for no reason.”
“He must have felt threatened,” Aster said. “Mister Knight, please remove yourself and the sons you brought with you. Apparently, your eldest has violated the tranquility of my home. In older days, I would be within my rights to cut him down. Considering your surname, I am sure you understand the feudal system that I am referring to.”
“I think I understand,” Russell said. “Clyde, apologize to the lady, an’ to yer brother. We’re leavin’ right after that.”
“I ain’t apologizin’ to no pansy,” Clyde said, holding a hand to his nose.
“You will apologize, sir,” Aster said. “If you do not, I will call the police and swear out a complaint against you for attempted assault.”
“That ain’t necessary, ma’am,” Russell said. “Clyde, apologize. We’re leavin’.”
“Yes, Daddy,” Clyde said. “Ah’m sorry.”
“You’re not,” Aster said. “But I will accept the apology in the spirit it is given. You disturbed my home, and an apology is required, whether you mean it or not.”

“I’m telling you, Nephrite, it was him,” Jadeite told his fellow Tennou. “He even stepped forward to challenge me. Hyperion’s found the Senshi.”
“I’ve seen Oberon,” Nephrite said. “Janus won’t be far behind. What did you tell the Queen?”
“I told her that the destruction of Tokyo had an unforeseen consequence,” Jadeite said. “The humans broadcasted the events all over their world. It was inevitable that at least one of them would remember.”
“Pity it wasn’t Janus now,” Nephrite said. “We could have pointed Zoisite at him and been confident that Janus would be obliterated.”
“I’m not certain that obliterating them is a viable option,” Jadeite said. He looked around furtively and then stepped closer to Nephrite.
“We have to consider that obliterating them might bring our own existence to an end,” Jadeite said softly. “I don’t know about you, but I have something to live for.”
“Yes,” Nephrite said. “You and I, as well. What do you suggest, then, Jadeite?”
“We capture them if we have an opportunity,” Jadeite said. “The Queen wanted to use them against their guard partners.”
“What about our earlier plans?” Nephrite asked.
“We have no plans, anymore,” Jadeite said. “We don’t have the time to make more.”
“We have the good opinion of two of the most powerful Senshi,” Nephrite pointed out. “That may count for something.”
“We owe our very existence to Queen Metalia,” Jadeite countered.
“Beryl will not give up,” Nephrite growled. “I don’t know about you, but I have no intention of being under her thumb again. If she becomes Queen, we leave.”
“And go where?” Jadeite wanted to know.
“There is still the house I created outside Tokyo,” Nephrite said. “Each time we’re sent to Earth, we can go there and make it habitable. Then, when we need to, we can go there.”
“What about Kunzite and Zoisite?” Jadeite asked. “You remember what Beryl did to Zoisite, both physically and emotionally. She summoned Kunzite more than either of us, because it bothered Zoisite.”
“I will speak with Kunzite,” Nephrite said. “Leave that to me, and you see to Quartzite and Amethyst.”
“Done,” Jadeite said.
~*~*~*~
Nephrite wasted no time in seeking out his senior Tennou and apprising him of the conversation between himself and Jadeite.
“As I told Jadeite,” Nephrite said. “Beryl will not give up. I have no intention of being at her beck and call again, and I know you do not want that for yourself or Zoisite.”
“Not to mention that there are the others to think of,” Kunzite said. “I believe that Lodite and Alexandrite would flourish in that kind of environment. Hematite and Amethyst, however, should not be left behind. Any escape plan should include them.”
“This is only if Beryl somehow manages to supplant Metalia,” Nephrite said pointedly.
“Small chance of that,” Zoisite said as he entered the room. “Your point about Beryl is well taken, though, and we should have a plan. Even someone like her could get lucky.”
“Your sanctuary outside Tokyo is a possibility,” Kunzite said. “We will make it more comfortable in stages, as we are sent to collect energy. Using Soladite’s strategies, there is no reason why we cannot collect enough energy to keep the Queen happy and to prepare in case Beryl manages to succeed.”

Aster scrambled out of the way of fleeing shoppers as she sought a secluded place to transform. She felt pulses of power nearby that told her some of the Senshi had managed what she had not.
Abruptly, a slender hand shot out of a side corridor and dragged her in. She opened her mouth to protest, and then nodded her gratitude to Sailor Pluto. She pulled out her henshin wand and transformed, ready to attack the youma that had appeared in an indoor playground.
When they arrived at the battle, the Inner Senshi were already fighting the youma, while their male counterparts rescued trapped civilians.
A childish shout drew Sol’s attention, and she turned in time to see Sailor Mini Moon grind her heel into one of Takara’s boots. He cried out and released her, drawing one hand back to strike the pink-haired Senshi.
Sol teleported Mini Moon to her arms, and pushed the smaller Senshi to Sailor Pluto.
“Keep her safe, Pluto!” she ordered, and then turned her attention to the man who she loathed above all others.
“Terra!” she called out. “Let the others play! You and I have business!”
“I already know,” the quiet voice of Sailor Terra behind him startled Takara into jumping forwards, towards Sol.
Sol grabbed the front of his uniform and held him while she delivered a punch to his stomach, with all of the strength of her arm and the weight of her body behind it.
Takara tried to yell as pain exploded in his abdomen. He couldn’t draw a breath to make any noise. He staggered back, and found himself caught by Terra.
“You ladies have work to do,” the voice of Prince Endymion. “Several of us would like to show our appreciation for your absence.”
“Very well, Endymion,” Terra said, pushing Takara towards him. “You know I can deny you nothing.”
“Endymion gets to have his fun first,” Kishi Janus said from beside his prince. “Then it’s the turn of his guards.”
“Let’s go to work, Terra,” Sol said. “I have faith that Takara will not be able to leave until the boys want him to.”
