Sarlis sat in his cell shaking and babbling. The soldiers assigned to guard him didn't know what Alucard did to his mind, and they didn't want to know either. He rubbed his head with the sleeve of his shirt constantly because he was always sweating. Integra walked to the cell where he was being kept. She looked at the two guards.
"Come inside with me and have your guns ready. If he attacks me do what you have to do." She ordered. The two guards nodded and unlocked the door. After entering the cell Integra ordered the door locked again.
"Your name is Sarlis. That is correct?" She asked sternly.
"Yyyyess." Sarlis stuttered.
"You've put the Hellsing organization and the Hellsing family into a great deal of peril, why?" Integra questioned. Sarlis just sat there shaking and crying.
"You kidnapped one of my best agents and tortured her. You wanted information about the freak chip. Why? What do you know about this chip?" Integra demanded.
Sarlis continued to sit and babble. Integra stomped over to him and grabbed the scruff of his shirt.
"You suffered his wrath once already. Shall I have him come down here and finish the job he started?" Integra growled.
"NO! Please, not him! Please don't let that thing down here!" Sarlis screamed.
"Then tell me why were you trying to find the location of Hellsing? What do you know about the freak chip?" Integra fumed.
"You can have it! You can have the damned thing! I don't care anymore! All the money in the world isn't worth this insanity!" Sarlis screeched.
"Damn you! Tell me what you know about the freak chip! You obviously know about its power or you wouldn't go to such great length to get it! Answer me or I swear I'll hand you over to Alucard on a silver platter!" Integra shouted.
"I don't know what it is! I don't know what it is, and I don't care! Just don't give me back to him! Please don't let him near me!" Sarlis yelled and sobbed. Integra shoved him to the ground.
"Damnit! We'll never know about this bloody freak chip!" Integra barked. The guards unlocked and opened the door as their employer stormed out of the cell.
Integra then walked to the lower levels. She came upon the door to Alucard's chamber. She remembered the harsh words exchanged between them both. The one thing that made them so similar was also the one thing that made it so hard for them to get along at times, pride. Most of the time it was Alucard having to put aside his own pride and follow orders given him by his human master. But this time it was Integra who would have to swallow her pride. Alucard disobeyed her orders yes, but she knew she could not be one to judge his reasons for doing so. Seras was HIS responsibility. She realized that Alucard felt a certain amount of blame for what happened to her. She turned to leave when she heard a voice.
"Are you going to come in or just stand out there and admire the artwork on the door?" Alucard asked. The door opened. Integra saw Alucard sitting in his chair sipping on a crystal goblet full of blood. She let out a sigh and walked into his chamber.
"So, have you come a decision about my fate or will my punishment be to just keep wondering what it is?" Alucard asked sarcastically.
"Come off it Alucard. I came here to talk like a rational human being." Integra said with a scowl.
"Rational human being, there's an irony for you. Most of the time humans aren't known for being rational creatures." Alucard replied.
"I realize that Alucard. I can't make up for what others have done in the past to your people. I can't make up for the deaths of your own at the hands of my ancestors. And I realize that you felt the need to avenge the crimes done to Seras Victoria. But you must understand Alucard; this entire organization rests on my shoulders. I am the leader and if I allowed such blatant insubordination to go undealt with I would lose control and therefore lose Hellsing. I know you have a responsibility to Seras, but I have a responsibility for you, Seras, Walter and every person who works and lives for this organization." Integra answered.
"I do understand your responsibility master. But sometimes you do not understand me like you think you do." Alucard replied.
"Well, sometimes you don't understand me the way you think you do either." Integra chided.
"The only thing either of us understand is we agree to disagree." Alucard said.
"I guess we will never truly understand each other. We don't see eye to eye the way we should most of the time." Integra sighed.
A fanged smile appeared on Alucard's face. "There is a way to fix that you know." He smirked.
"Nice try Alucard, but you know where I stand on that issue. I am human and I intend to remain that way." Integra replied.
"Never say never master." Alucard said with a chuckle.
"I'm putting you on suspension. Until you have cooled off from this incident I can't trust you with a mission right now. You can consider that the consequences of your actions...this time. But so help me if you ever pull a stunt like this again I'll have you're extremities scattered all over Great Britain. Do we understand each other Alucard?" Integra asked firmly.
"Clear as crystal master." Alucard replied.
"You better be telling me the truth this time Alucard." Integra warned.
"I am master." Alucard answered.
Integra started walking back up to the second level of the compound when a guard came running toward her. "Sir Integra! Something's happened in Sarlis’s cell!" He shouted.
Integra started running toward the brig as fast as she could. She came toward the cell with the door opened. Her eyes widened and she gasped in shock. There was Sarlis hanging from a sheet tied to a barred window. His face was twisted in an expression of lunacy and terror.
"I'm sorry Sir. We didn't know what was going on until we heard the bed hit the floor. By then it was too late." One guard explained.
"Damn bastard, took the cowards way out. Get this mess cleaned up and make sure the body is disposed of." Integra ordered.
"Yes sir."
Walter was waiting in Sir Integra's office. "Has there been any information Sir Integra?" He asked.
"What little we did get was useless. He didn't know anymore about the freak chip than we do. And now the bastard just hanged himself in the hopes he would escape whatever madness Alucard saw fit to inflict upon him." Integra answered.
"Horrible." Walter commented grimly.
"Well, the one good thing is that he won't be around to cause anyone else anymore trouble. As for Alucard, I'm putting him on one month's suspension. When he's cooled down from all this I can trust him to be on active duty again." Integra answered.
"That's all?" Walter asked suprised.
"You think that too harsh Walter?" Integra asked.
"No Sir Integra. It's just that before you were so determined to teach Alucard a lesson." Walter replied.
"Sometimes even I can be wrong about something’s. I could have inflicted worse on Alucard and would have had every right to, but I realize that sometimes I don't know as much about him or his kind as I think I do. He showed me a side of himself that I don't think many if any have ever seen. I misjudged his feelings about Seras Victoria. I was wrong to do that. He may be a vampire, but I realized that he also has a heart even if it doesn't beat like a human heart does. I guess it is just as well that he keeps it hidden most of the time. I can't have my best agent going soft on me all the sudden." Integra explained.
"If there is nothing you need of me for the moment Sir Integra I should like to take my leave." Walter said.
"You're excused Walter." Integra replied.
Seras lay in her coffin. She shifted, tossed and turned trying to sleep. The young vampire realized that perhaps she wasn't as ready to be alone as she thought. She was still having nightmares of being tortured. She could hear the snap of the whip in her mind. She could still feel it coming down against her back cutting her skin open. She gripped the sides of her bed whipping her head from side to side.
"No...No! Let me go! Leave me alone!" She cried subconsciously in her sleep. She started curling into a ball trying to protect herself. Her body shook violently. She started to cry thinking the nightmares would never stop haunting her.
”Seras." A voice called.
She heard her master's voice in her mind. She felt the fear beginning to fade from her and her body stretched out. She looked up and saw her surroundings had changed. She saw herself in a magnificent bed surrounded by sheer crimson fabric. She saw herself in a deep purple velvet robe like gown. Then she saw him. Alucard stood before her, his long raven hair flowed down to his waist. He still had his usual attire less the crimson coat, hat and glasses.
"Master." She said with a shaky voice.
The elder vampire walked toward her and put his arms around her. Then to her amazement a huge pair of bat like wings grew out of his back and surrounded them both. She pressed her head close to his chest. He leaned his head close, his face only inches from hers. To her suprise, his lips touched hers in a gentle kiss.
"They will never hurt you again. You are safe now my dark child." She heard his voice, soft and soothing. Those words softly and slowly played throughout her mind. She closed her eyes and fell asleep in the arms of her master.
Seras awoke in her own chamber, in her own coffin. What had happened? Had her master really been there with her just now? She came to the conclusion that it was an illusion. Alucard had that power to alter a person's reality even if it was only mentally. He'd done it a few times before. He'd made Integra rather upset by doing it to her once. But this time he'd done it for Seras, not to her. He'd done it to comfort her. It was something he had never done to her knowledge. She opened the coffin and saw she was not alone. Alucard had been sitting in her chamber. He had been there the whole time.
"Are you all right now police girl?" He asked softly.
"Yes master. May I ask you something?"
"Yes." Alucard answered.
"When I asked you was there something else about what happened to me that affected you, you said it was a long story. What did you mean by that?" Seras asked.
"It happened a very long time ago. There are things about my past that for now I do not care to go into. I will tell you that I too have known the sting of a whip, and the fists of cruel men. I have known what torture is. Seeing it happen to you...brought back some of those memories I'd thought I'd long forgotten. That is all you need to know for now. When you are stronger, perhaps I will tell you about my past. But for now you need to focus on gaining all your strength back." Alucard replied.
Seras decided she would be content with the answer her master gave her. "I know now I'm not ready to be on my own. I...I thought I could do it. I wanted this assignment because I wanted to convince myself that I was ready to be a true vampire. But I'm not ready. Sometimes, I don't think I'll ever be ready." She said lowering her head.
"You think that way now, but one day you will be ready to claim your freedom. One day you will be a powerful vampire. Perhaps one day you will become as powerful as I am. One day you will be ready Seras Victoria." He said as he vanished from her room.
He appeared in his chamber. Walter was just about to enter his room with a fresh blood pack.
"Is Miss Victoria all right?" The aged retainer asked. "She is now." Alucard replied.
"I hope Sir Integra was not too harsh with you." Walter responded.
"I'm on suspension for a month so I can...heh, cool down as she put it." Alucard remarked with a chuckle.
"I guess this has been equally hard on you. I did not realize how fond you have grown of Miss Victoria." Walter said.
"She chose to come with me. She did not choose to be tortured and violated the way she was. I suppose when they did all that they did to her, they were also doing it to me." Alucard replied becoming serious.
"It brought up memories of your human life didn't it?" Walter asked.
"I kept those memories buried. I thought they'd never surface again. I have let myself grow closer to the police girl than perhaps I should have." Alucard said.
"You keep your secrets tightly guarded Alucard. But there are some things you can't hide from these old eyes of mine." Walter replied.
"Perceptive for a human, aren't you?" Alucard mused with half a smile.
"That I am." Walter answered.
The end.
