Chapter 7
Hatori checked his temperature. "Well it has come down some but you still have a fever."
"Are you hungry?" asked Mai
"No."
"OK well try to get some rest. I will be downstairs if you need anything."
"OK."
Hatori gave him some medication orally and then they left his room. They walked down into the kitchen and Mai sat down at the table, "Is he going to be ok Hatori?"
Sighing, "I don’t know Mai. In the past I have always been able to bring his fever down with some medication, but for some reason this time it won’t come down."
"I don’t want to loose him."
"I know that you don’t. I promise you that I will do everything in my power to make him better."
Looking at him, "I know that you will Hatori."
Just then Haru and Momiji walked into the room.
Running up to Mai, "Mai your home." Yelled Momiji.
"Yes I am home. Have you been a good boy?"
"Yes."
"Except for eating my cooking." Replied Hatori.
"What is so bad about Hatori’s cooking?"
"The only thing he makes is miso soup and rice balls." Replied Momiji.
Mai began laughing, "Well don’t worry I will cook you dinner tonight."
"Yippee!" Yelled Momiji.
"Hey be quiet, Akito is sleeping."
"Sorry," muttered Momiji.
Haru and Momiji left the house. It was Saturday so neither one of them had school. Mai spent most of the day sitting at Akito’s bedside just watching him sleep. She was so worried about loosing her son. Around mid afternoon Hatori walked into the room.
"How is he?"
"He feels hot again and his skin looks flushed, but he is still asleep."
Hatori nodded and just stood there watching Mai for a minute. She was so gentle with Akito no matter how ornery and mean he had been to her. Akito slowly opened his eyes and looked up at Mai.
"How do you feel?" Asked Mai.
"Hot," he groaned pushing the blanket off of his chest.
Hatori checked his temperature, "102, well your fever is back."
Hatori gave Akito another injection of medication.
"Are you hungry?" asked Mai.
"No."
"OK well take it easy. I will be downstairs if you need anything."
Akito just nodded. Mai got up and walked downstairs followed by Hatori. He knew that she was worried about Akito.
"Mai."
"He doesn’t have much longer does he?"
"I’m afraid not."
Mai just sighed and walked into the kitchen. She had to make dinner for the others. After dinner Hatori did the dished and Mai went up to Akito’s room. Akito was sound asleep. He had pulled the blanket completely off of his body. Mai gently covered him up to his waist.
Walking into the room, "How is he?" asked Hatori.
"Asleep. I am going to stay in here tonight."
"Mai..."
She raised her hand to silence him, "I can’t leave him Hatori. I need to be with him."
Nodding, "OK, I will be in the spare bedroom across the hall if you need anything."
She nodded and watched him leave the room. Mai got a large blanket and made herself as comfortable as possible. It was a long time though before she fell asleep. She woke up sometime around mid-night, only to find her son looking at her.
Sitting up, "Akito is something wrong?"
"I don’t feel good."
Mai got up and went to him. She didn’t even have to touch him to tell how hot he was; she could feel the heat coming off of him. He slowly sat up and Mai pulled him into her arms.
"I am sorry Mai."
"Shh, don’t worry about it. It is OK my son."
It was a few minutes before Akito spoke again. "I love you mother." He replied weakly.
Crying, "I love you too son."
Mai felt him take his last breath and then go limp in her arms. She just cradled him against her. Mai didn’t ever want to let him go. She had been holding him about an hour, though to Mai it felt like a lifetime, when Hatori walked into the room.
"Mai." He said softly.
She looked up at him and he could see the tear streaks on her face. He knew that it wasn’t good.
"He’s... dead." She whispered.
Hatori went to her and gently pulled Akito out of her arms. He laid Akito back down on the bed.
"Mai I’m sorry."
She didn’t say anything. He wanted to hug her and hold her close, but he knew that if he did he would transform. Mai slowly got up and walked into her own room. She shut the door and lay down on her bed. Mai just cried herself to sleep.
Hatori walked downstairs and over to the phone. He picked up the phone and dialed Shigure’s house.
Sleepily, "Hello."
"Shigure it’s Hatori. I am sorry to wake you."
"Why are you calling at this hour Hatori?"
"Akito is dead."
There was only silence on the phone, "Shigure?"
"I’m here, how is Mai?"
"Extremely upset. We will probably bury him tomorrow. So you guys should come to the main house in the morning."
"Well I don’t know about the others, but I will be there."
"OK, night."
"Night."
Hatori hung up the phone and sat down at the table. There was no way that he was going to sleep anymore tonight, especially since he was so worried about Mai.
Hatori was still awake when the sun began to rise. He went to the door when he heard voices outside. He was not surprised to see Shigure, but he was very surprised to see Yuki. Kyo was not with them.
"You are a lot earlier then I was expecting." Said Hatori.
"Yes well I wanted to get here as soon as possible. Do the others know yet?" asked Shigure.
"No, I didn’t want to wake them."
"How is Mai?" asked Yuki.
"She is asleep right now."
They all walked into the kitchen and Hatori started to make a pot of tea. It was about an hour later when Mai walked into the kitchen. Her eyes were still all red and puffy from all the crying that she had been doing.
"Mai I made some tea," said Hatori. "Would you like some?"
Mai just nodded and sat down at the table. Hatori got out a mug and poured her a cup. Then he set it down on the table in front of her. Mai just sat there looking down at the table. They heard voices outside and Haru and Momiji walked into the room. Haru immediately noticed the somber mood in the room. "What is wrong?"
Mai just got up and walked outside.
"Akito died last night." Replied Shigure.
"And that is a bad thing." Said Haru.
Hatori immediately whacked him upside his head, "be nice, Mai was his mother and she is ver upset."
Rubbing his head, "Yeah, yeah."
"I mean it Haru."
Momiji just turned and walked outside. He found Mai sitting under a tree. Slowly he walked up to her and dropped on his knees before her.
"I’m sorry Mai." He said hugging her. Of course he immediately transformed into a rabbit.
"Thank you Momiji," she said hugging him. She put him on the ground and shortly after that he transformed back into a boy. He got dressed and they walked back into the house.
The funeral was small, with only members of the zodiac being there. Akito was buried on the families’ own burial grounds. Afterwards Mai just stayed at the burial site while the others headed back toward the house. Hatori just stood there.
Turning toward Hatori, "Are you coming?" asked Shigure.
"I will be there in a few minutes."
Shigure nodded and continued on to the house. Hatori watched Mai for a few minutes.
"I will never forget you my son."
"Mai, you know that I am here for you." Said Hatori.
Looking up at him, "I know you are, thanks."
She got up, walked up to him and they walked back toward the house hand in hand.
