Chapter 6: Romantic…sort of, Part 1

Yuki pulled in to the driveway and parked his car, turning the transmission off. His thoughts had cleared some after the little talk that him and Renami had. He was also persuaded to go home after the CAT scan had come in—he was still pretty sane. He looked up at the building that was his home. It was welcoming him in a strange sort of way, almost like he needed to be here. He opened the door and stepped out. Locking the car behind him he walked to the elevator and pressed the number for his floor.

The doors opened and he calmly stepped out. Yuki walked to the front door of his apartment and searched his pocket for the key. Once found, he took a deep breathe before inserting the key and unlocking the door. He slowly pushed the door open expecting there to either be no one home or the fire department putting his kitchen out.

“Yuki!” Shuichi ran over to his lover and wrapped his arms around the man’s neck. He then leaned up to place a kiss on the novelist’s lips. “You’re home. Welcome back!”

“Mmm, whatever you’re cooking smells good,” said Yuki smelling the air. He looked at his petite lover and sighed, his eyes turning sad. He wanted to cry. How could he have been so stupid before?

“What’s wrong, Yuki?” asked Shuichi, running a hand down the blonds cheek. His index finger stopped at his jaw line and traced down the under side of his chin. His fingers fell farther down and ran along his throat and collar bone, lacing their thin joints into Yuki’s half way open button down shirt. “You look sad.”

“Sorry I didn’t bring home the tofu but I…Oh,” Yuki’s gaze shifted to the couch and eyed an unconscious Renami. Her head was wrapped in bandages and her right arm, along with her left wing, were covered in gauze. Her black clothes had burn marks on them and her beautiful silver hair was synched. “What happened to her?” Yuki pointed a finger at the poor goddess, knowing that Shuichi had something to do with her state of disability.

“Well…she was helping me cook, or to be more precise, she was cooking and I tried to help her,” Shuichi looked at the demon and smiled guiltily. “I kind of set her on fire while trying to turn the stove burners on.” His eyes became so large and apologetic Yuki thought that they would fall out of his head.

Yuki’s brow furrowed and his left eye twitched. He was so glad that he hadn’t been home all day. At the same time he also pitied Renami for ever staying here and choosing Shuichi as a host. Eiri sighed silently; he would have to make it up to her later.

Allowing his sadness to slip away, he embraced the younger man once more. “I was promised a dinner by my return home.” He smiled at the singer who nodded and trotted off in to the kitchen. He casually followed suit and walked in the same direction, still fearful of what the kitchen was going to look like.

Upon entry all his doubts were swept away by the sight in front of him. There were two turquoise candles on the table that illuminated a promising dinner. In between the two candles lay two black roses that rested with the blossom in opposite directions from each other. Scattered on the floor and the edge of the table were red rose peddles that filled the room with their fragrance. In front of the candles diagonal from each other were two violet crystal wine glasses expertly decorated and crafted with a black dragon that circled the center and wrapped around, allowing its tail to be the stand for the objects.

The dinner was a marvel all on its own. It consisted of white rice served in a black bowls decorated with elegant gold rims and cherry trees painted on their surfaces. A decent sized salad bowl that held the chicken, vegetable, teriyaki, mushroom, honey soaked beef, chest nut stir fry. Two white plates that held fish, home made Cajun noodles, and sweet and sour chicken. And to add to the elegance of it all a very expensive, rare 1787 Chateau Lafite wine bottle resting in a tray full of ice, waiting to be opened.

“Shuichi how did you…” Yuki trailed off at the mere sight of how happy his lover looked. His eyes were filled with more life now then they had been in the two years he had known him. They glistened so brilliantly in the light and the dim color that the candles cast on his face brought out the expression fully. His heart melted at the vision before him. His little baka had never appeared so innocent and sexy before.

Shuichi gazed at Yuki and smiled. “I didn’t. Renami did. This was all her idea. She put it together and I set her on fire for it!” Shuichi’s eyes began to water. But they weren’t tears of sadness, they were tears of joy. The singer couldn’t help but laugh at the way that it had all happened.

*** Earlier that evening… ***

“Shuichi! Get out of the kitchen. I don’t need help,” Renami said over the sound of chopping vegetables. She finished cutting up the carrots and put them into the frying pan along with the rest of the stir fry ingredients. Careful not to spill any, she poured soy sauce, teriyaki sauce, salt, and some lemon and pepper in to her concoction.

“Come on, let me help,” Shuichi pouted. Grabbing the Tabasco sauce, he tried to pour some, namely the whole bottle, into her masterpiece. Having kept an eye on him, she seized his hand before he could tip the glass container and allow its liquid out. “Renami, I want to help! Please?” Shuichi made a puppy face and then gave her the innocent angel look.

The demon gazed at him in annoyance. Had he forgotten that she could not only read minds but since she was an extension of his body that she also knew his every thought? Besides she wasn’t the type to fall for the whole puppy begging routine. Taking the bottle from him she gave him a stern look. “Get the hell out of the kitchen!”

Shuichi walked away, defeated. He sat on the couch for minutes just watching the woman work. How in the world does a demon, a violent one at that, know how to cook? Shuichi thought. Oh well. I guess it doesn’t matter as long as Yuki likes it. I wish she would tell me what she’s doing though. She said that all she did was go out and tell Yuki to come home. Then why did she come back with all those roses and plates and glasses? Kami-sama only knows how she got black roses.

Shuichi was snapped out of his thoughts by the sound of Renami shuffling in the kitchen. He looked at her and noticed that she was holding the frying pan in one hand and the oil in another. He walked over to her and asked what she was doing. She didn’t answer. He looked at the stove, where she had placed the pan. He though, well if she’s going to cook she needs to turn the stove on. And without seeing that some oil had spilt on the burner and was dripping down the front of the stove to the oven door he lit the burner. Renami’s hair was but inches away from the oil but that was close enough to set it aflame.

Renami jumped and, thankfully had set the pan down, started padding her hair to put the fire out. She turned on the water faucet and threw water onto her know sizzled silver locks. With a dangerous leer, she turned to Shuichi who was trying to put the stove out. She filled a bowl with water and threw it on both the fire and the singer. “Didn’t I tell you to stay out of the kitchen?” Renami growled.

Shuichi stared at her not sure whether to cry or laugh. Her hair, where it was burnt, was now charcoal black and standing on ends. He put his hands over his mouth to suppress a chuckle.

Renami was less than amused as she grabbed Shuichi by the throat and lifted him off the ground. She pressed him to the wall and watched as he struggled against her vice grip. He clawed at her hands and stopped when he noticed that her right arm had been burnt putting out the fire on her hair. Also her left wing was a bit burnt too, next to where the scorch mark on her hair was. She saw his worried face and put him down. Then the goddess walked back to what she was doing.

“And for desert, I’m making flambé,” said Renami coming into the kitchen

Yuki looked at her, not believing that she could actually walk after what Shuichi did. “Haven’t you played with enough fire today?” asked the novelist sarcastically.

Renami smirked back at him before walking to the table and opening the wine bottle. She tore the wrapping from the bottle’s head and threw it in the trash. Careful not to spill any, she poured the liquid into the empty glasses and placed the bottle back into the tray.

“What happened to your head?”

“What?” Renami looked up from what she was doing.

“What happened to your head?” Yuki repeated.

Renami unwound the white bandages from her head and revealed a glowing gold symbol on her forehead. It was a C shape with a tail and three spikes. “Sorry, I act up sometimes. When that happens I just cover it up,” Renami smiled and threw the bandages away.

“I see,” Yuki left the kitchen and headed for the bedroom, stripping off his coat and discarding it on the couch.

“Where are you going, Yuki?” Shuichi followed his lover out into the hallway and stopped.

Eiri turned his head so he could look at the singer. “To slip into something more comfortable.” With a wink he vanished beyond the door of their room.

Shuichi walked back into the kitchen with a deep blush burned on to his cheeks. His eyes were big and sparkly and he all but flooded the apartment with the river of drool that poured from his mouth.

“You keep that up and we’ll all drown. Not to mention your perfect dinner will be ruined,” Renami’s voice came from the kitchen counter. Her tail was wrapped around her waist and her wings were open and resting on either side of the counter. “Don’t worry, brat, everything will be fine…just as long as you don’t keep your big mouth shut.”

“What do you mean by that?” Shuichi asked shyly. The waterworks had stopped but his cheeks were still brighter than the sun.

“When he asks you why you didn’t tell him just say what’s on your mind. Which means tell him the truth because you’re not a very convincing liar.” Renami smiled and jumped from the counter. She watched as Yuki came in and hugged Shuichi from behind. She then bowed politely and spoke softly, “I’ll leave you two gentlemen for the evening. I will reside on the roof so if you need anything just call. I’ll be listening.” With another quick bow she jumped into the ceiling and disappeared beyond the solid.

~ A life, a place that has to fall…the gods have come to judge us all. ~

Shuichi sipped his wine gracefully, almost looking mature. He placed the glass down and picked up his chopsticks and started to poke at his food absent mindedly. Why does this all seem so familiar? Shuichi thought. He had never had dinner like this with Yuki but he could recall an event such as this happening once before. Pushing aside that thought he glanced at one of the candles on the table. They had been burning for over an hour and seemed never changing. They hadn’t even dripped an ounce of wax but just remained whole.

“Shuichi?” Yuki looked up from his empty plate and stared at the blank expression on his lover’s face. Ever since dinner had begun Shuichi was quiet and his eyes kept going away like they used to before Renami was introduced to the blond properly.

Shuichi blinked twice and gazed up from the candle. Yuki looked really beautiful in the light of the candles. His hair shined a dim dirty blond and his hazel eyes appeared a deep golden color. He really was the man every one wanted in their bed. Shuichi smiled and took a bite of his rice. “Yeah?”

“Why didn’t you tell me that you had a…” the novelist couldn’t even bring himself to finish the statement. He didn’t want to believe that it had been true. It was though. Yuki had called Shuichi’s doctor before returning home and the doctor had said that his little baka had only a few months to live. Then it happened that the tumor had just disappeared as if it was never there. The same happened to him. After tasting the demon’s blood he was cured of his illnesses.

“I didn’t want you to worry, Yuki. I would rather have spent the last few months alive here without you knowing. I didn’t want you to worry and if you had found out then we wouldn’t be here like this, we would be flying all over the world looking for a doctor capable of removing it,” Shuichi paused a moment and gave a weak smile. “Renami found me in the park the day that I was diagnosed with the tumor. She said that she would help me if I helped her in return. She told me what the price would be and what she wanted in return. At first I had said no. Then she told me that there is no price on life and that if given the chance to survive that I should take it. She was right. What she was asking for was nothing compared to what she was doing for me. She was giving me life and the chance to die old with you. She even agreed to help you. It was fine even though she possessed my body. She made all the pain go away and slowly got rid of it.” A solitary tear slid down Shuichi\'s cheek. The thought that he could have and would have died if she hadn’t been there frightened him. Growing up he never thought that would ever happen to him and when it did he was scared. He didn’t want to die. He didn’t want to leave Yuki or Bad Luck.

Yuki took Shuichi’s hand in his own. It was smaller but fit into his perfectly. He couldn’t imagine a world without his lover, and wondered how he got by for twenty-two years without knowing him. No, life without the brat wasn’t life at all—it was an empty world where you roamed blind. He looked into the violet eyes that gazed back in to his own. They were pure and untainted. Yuki stood from his seat and walked to his lover’s side of the table. Sliding him out of his seat, he picked him up and carried him off down the hall to their bedroom.

A/N: To all those that care to know, Renami didn\'t ask for money when Shuichi said price. The price was the body that was provided for her. Anyways hope you enjoyed and please review. (You bastards have been real stin\'gy and refuse to tell Nami what you think. That\'s not fair. (~_~) )
