Chapter 22 Ninja Training

“I need some time for myself,” Negi is thinking when he gets dressed in the morning. “It’s just too confusing all this with Evangeline and partnership and now finally the thing Asuna and I did. I can’t believe we really had intercourse, I thought you had to be at least 18 to do that. No, I must get away and I’ll better leave immediately before she comes back from her paper route.”

He finds his staff and flies out the window. He is flying over fields and roads and then over forests and hills. In low altitude he is following a river but where the river takes a sharp bend he doesn’t react fast enough and hits a tree on the bank. He falls down the trunk and lands in the water. His staff is gone and he cannot locate it.

“Alone in the wilderness, a long way from home and I don’t even know what direction it is. What am I going to do?” He walks a little way and suddenly he hears some noise and he gets very scared. “Oh no, it’s a wolf or a bear or…” But the figure that comes out from the bushes is not an animal.

“Well, isn’t it Negi-bouzu? Never thought I’d meet you out here de gozaru.”

“Kaede, I’m so happy to see you,” says Negi and embraces her.

“Yes, I go out here in the mountains to train every Saturday. You care to join me?”

“Yes, why not,” says Negi after thinking about it a few seconds. “It might be a good thing to train my body a little also; it’s been a long time since I’ve been doing that. I’m getting too lazy.”

But the training is very different from what he had expected. Kaede takes him to a pond in the river and asks him to catch fish with his hands.

“That’s not possible,” says Negi.

“Watch this,” says Kaede and jumps up in the air. And with many acrobatic jumps and moves, it looks like she is flying over the pond; she catches several fishes before she returns to Negi.

“That was amazing,” says Negi. “What’s next?”

“Picking wild vegetables. Come with me, they are right over here.”

Negi follows her into the forest where the vegetables are and she has an incredible technique with this also. While Negi is only able to pick a few, she has her arms full within just a minute or so.

They grill the fish and while they are eating Negi is looking at Kaede. “She’s so strong and fast, I could need someone like her as my partner. No, what am I thinking, I already have a partner. Asuna and I have just…made a contract. But I know mages can have more than one partner, my father probably had, but still I cannot do it again with Kaede. What would the principal say if I he found out I was having sex with my students?”

“What are you smiling at sensei?”

“Uh, nothing,” says Negi ashamed of his thoughts.

“Well, if you are finished eating we can continue the training.”

And for the whole day they are climbing mountains, swimming rivers and running through forests. Negi is quite tired when the evening comes. “This makes me really sweaty,” he says while they are climbing up a steep hill.

“You want to take a bath?” says Kaede. “That’s no problem; my camp site is just up here.”

And a little further up they are coming to a plateau with a great view.

“How beautiful it is here,” says Negi.

“Yes, this is my place where I usually camp when I’m out here training. I’ll go and make your bath ready.”

There’s an open barrel with water in it and she makes a fire underneath it. When the water is warm she tells Negi and without any thought of shyness he takes off his clothes and climbs up in the barrel.

“Aah, this feels great. I have never enjoyed taking a bath so much before.”

“I think you’re going to enjoy it even more,” says Kaede and takes off her training clothes. She has nothing underneath. “Move over, make some room for me too.”

“No…uh…I’ll get out,” says Negi and rises up.

“Don’t be afraid, I’m not going to eat you,” says Kaede and climbs up in the barrel behind him. She grabs around his chest and stomach and sits down with him in front of her. “Isn’t it nice, having a bath like this?”

Negi is still not comfortable; this is not what he wanted, being so close together when they are naked. They really had a good time together today the two of them and he felt that they had become good friends, but this is not how friends should do, is it? Or is it like that here in Japan? He comes to think of Asuna again.

“Relax Negi, don’t be so tense. Your muscles have been working hard today and they need to rest now. Just sit still and feel the peace and quiet here in the wilderness.”

“She’s right,” he thinks. “There’s nothing wrong with taking a bath together and I can feel the peace.”

“My tent is over there,” she says. “We will sleep inside it.”

“But aren’t there bears and wolves around here?”

Kaede doesn’t answer but walks to the edge of the cliff. She takes a deep breath and yells out so it echoes in all the mountains around. She is quite a sight, the big strong ninja girl standing naked on the cliff yelling at the top of her lungs. Negi almost get scared by her powerful voice.

“Now everybody knows Kaede is here and no one will disturb us in the night. I will just wash our clothes and then we’ll go to sleep.” She puts them in the barrel they just came up from and uses some soap to wash them and then hangs them up in a tree.

“She is so fearless,” Negi thinks. “Not afraid of anything. I wish I could be like that.”

“It’s not big, but it’s enough space for the two of us,” she says when they are crawling into the tent.

Negi is freezing, when the sun set it got remarkable colder, but all his clothes are wet and there is just a small blanket here, on the math-covered ground.

“You’re so cold, I forgot that you are not used to the cold nights here in the mountains,” Kaede says. “Lie close to me and I’ll make you feel nice and warm.”

“Thank you for giving me good company,” replies Kaede. “It was really fun to be with you. I’m here every Saturday, so if you want more training you know where to find me. And there’ll always be a bath ready for you when you feel sweaty.”

“Goodbye, see you in school,” he shouts and flies away into the air.
“Negi-bouzu, where have you been?” says Asuna angrily when he is back inside their room.
“I’m sorry Asuna, I…”
“Yes, you should be. After what we did last night. We were lovers and you just run off in the morning without a word and you don’t come back for more than 24 hours. And I knew nothing of where you’d been and who’d you met.”
Negi suddenly feels very guilty and shameful. Yes it was special to make love to Asuna and although they didn’t make any promises he feels that they are committed in some way and he just runs off and into the arms of another girl.
“I’m very mad at you for abusing me like that.”
“Sorry Asuna, you…”
“You think I’m some kind of a free whore you can just have your way with and then walk away when you’re finished?”
“But it wasn’t…”
“I should have mopped the floor with you but…” She throws herself around his neck and holds him hard towards her. “I was just so worried for you. Don’t do a thing like that again, you hear. Next time you’ll take off you’ll tell me first, ok? We are partners, doesn’t that mean anything?”
“Of course Asuna, I’m sorry, I will never do a thing like that again. But I wasn’t planning to be away for so long.”
“Where have you been anyway?”
“Eh, I was up in the mountains training and then I…got lost and I had to camp there for the night.”
“Stupid Negi. Next time you take me with you so I can guard you and watch out for you. That’s what partners are for, isn’t it?”
“Weren’t you afraid when you were alone there the whole night? There might be bears or wolves around, you know,” says Konoka.
Negi looks at her. He didn’t notice she was there. She must have heard everything he and Asuna talked about. He wonders if he should tell that he was with Kaede but reckons it’s better not. “A little, but I didn’t see any fierce animals,” he says.
“I’ll make breakfast, you must be hungry,” says Konoka.
Negi cannot say that he’d already had breakfast and soon after he is enjoying his second breakfast with his roommates and both of them seem to be happy and in a good mood.
