Anon: Thanks for
reviewing. I agree with you, there is too little Alucard/Walter out
there. That's why I had to write my own :-)
Chapter 7 – Not the same
The smell of grief and
soul-deep pain had enveloped the room like
a heavy shroud, covering both Walter and Alucard. Tears were leaking
from the mortal's closed eyes, spilling over his cheeks and wetting
his pillow.
Alucard was caught up
in his own emotions, trapped between the desire to lick the tears
away and the unfamiliar burning in his own eyes. The moment he had
said Good-bye to Walter had been the only time in his immortal life
that he had ever cried and seeing the pain this moment had brought
his precious Angel he could feel his vision tinging red with bloody
tears.
But the vampire didn't
allow them to fall, instead reaching out and carefully brushing
Walter's tears away. So pretty and fragile when he cried. Giving in
to the irresistible urge he licked the wetness on his fingers away,
salt underlain with the flavor that was
uniquely Walter. He had really missed that taste.
The tears had lessened
a little, but now Walter's face was a mask of stone, the smell of
sadness and loss replaced by sheer bitterness. Wondering what
thoughts and memories now plagued his Angel Alucard slipped back into
his mind effortlessly.

Walter sighed wearily
as he got out of the limousine and entered the Hellsing mansion. He
had hoped that when he returned from organizing Sir Hellsing's
funeral and informing the necessary authorities of the fact that his
daughter Integra would take over the Hellsing institution he would
finally be able to get at least a few hours of sleep.
But he had barely
opened the door when one of the temporary maids, that had been hired
to full-fill his duties while he was absent, hurried towards him.
“Lady Integra requests your presence in her father's study. I
have been ordered to tell you that it is of utmost importance.”
Nodding his head Walter told her that she could leave since he would
take over his duties again.
He only hoped that
there wasn't another grave problem of some sort, since he had faced
too many of those over the last couple of days. He had spend
countless hours reasoning with authorities, who had objected to a
young girl taking over the Hellsing organization.
It wasn't that he
didn't understand their concerns. Lady Integra truly was still a
child, but she had been born into a world of adults and Sir Arthur
had taught her well enough to hold her own
against the creatures of darkness. So he had reasoned countless
times, always encountering the same doubts, but in the end every
member of the Round table and the responsible party of the Royal
family had been convinced and Walter had considered his duty
fulfilled.
Stopping in front of
the Hellsing study Walter knocked politely, waiting to be called
inside. “Come in.” Expecting Integra to be alone Walter
entered, his jaw almost dropping open in shocked surprise as his eyes
fell on the creature perched on the edge of the young girl's desk.
Alucard.
The stab of pain was
sudden and unexpected, just like the vampire's presence had been.
Instantly raising his mental shields Walter hoped to lock the
bitterness and grief he felt away. But what ultimately unsettled him
where not those feelings, but the flicker of love he still found
burning inside his soul.
A love he thought he
had managed to control and to quench, drowning it's flames in his
bitterness and his seemingly endless river of tears. After Alucard
had left he thought he had managed to harden his heart, never letting
anyone in again. He had of course had other lovers over the years,
but he had always kept them distant, unimportant encounters to ease
his loneliness for a short while.
And all because of
Alucard, the vampire who now sat in front of him, his red eyes
burning a hole through Walter's soul, just like they had done in the
past. The Immortal almost hadn't changed at all, only his hair was a
mass of grey rather than the silken black
it had been the last time Walter had seen it, but strands of darker
color were already reappearing even while he stared.
The urge to just throw
himself into Alucard's arms and cry was strong, but Walter resisted
it. Losing the Immortal had almost destroyed him once and he wouldn't
risk it a second time. He almost shuddered when he remembered the
days after Alucard had been locked away, stumbling through the
darkest, seediest parts of London, looking for vampires who would
bite him just so that he could feel a little bit of what Alucard had
given him.
Never again. The times
when he was young and helplessly enamored
with Alucard were long past, but if that was the truth then why was
his heart beating so wildly and his stomach feeling as if it was
doing a tap dance?
He just couldn't help
himself, but he wouldn't give in to these feelings again. Besides he
doubted that Alucard would want him after all that time. The vampire
may have stayed eternally beautiful, but he hadn't. The brands of age
were visible all over his body, clearly shown in the monocle he had
to wear, the wrinkles around his eyes and mouth and just a few days
ago he had even found a first grey hair. He wasn't the boy that the
vampire had loved anymore and there was no
use in deluding himself.
While he had been
trapped in his musings and staring at the Immortal Walter had
completely missed that Integra had spoken,
so when she asked him if he would do so he simply answered with yes.
He had absolutely no idea what he had agreed to, but he only hoped
that it had nothing to do with Alucard.
Obviously he didn't
have such luck since Integra said her Goodnight
and walked out of the room, leaving Walter and his former lover
alone. “It's good to see you again, my Angel of Death.” A
smile had spread over Alucard's features while he spoke, but Walter
couldn't decide whether it was genuine or
just mocking him.
Angered by his own
inability to read the Immortal he spat: “Don't call me that.
These times are long past.” It had been the first thing that
came to his mind, besides asking Alucard why he hadn't told him that
he would be locked away on that fateful
night twenty years ago.
Was that a flicker of
hurt on the vampire's features? Walter decided that it was just his
wishful thinking since Alucard's voice
betrayed none of his feelings when he spoke. “That it is.”
Several minutes of silence passed between them before Alucard spoke
up again. “So why don't you lead me to my rooms like you
promised my master to do?”
This time it was
definitely mocking laughter that resided in Alucard's voice, a kind
of teasing Walter was in no mood to stand at the moment. “You
very well know where your room is, Alucard.” The words had
barely left his mouth when he stormed out of the room, the
equilibrium he had been in less than half
an hour ago completely shattered.

The dream changed again
and finally Walter found a way to break out of his memories. At least
he thought he had since the graveyard he now found himself in was
unfamiliar to him. Not that he remembered every one of them he had
seen while hunting for vampires, but he was
fairly certain that he would have recognized the high, regal
tombstones had he seen them before.
Drawn by something he
couldn't quite fathom Walter started to walk, turning onto a path he
had never seen before and yet he knew exactly where to go. Right in
front of him a fresh grave loomed, a bouquet of blood-red roses the
only flowers decorating the dark soil.
Walter C. Dolneaz
Seeing his name on the
grave stone should have disturbed him, but it only did so a little.
After all he had had more then one close brush with death and he had
always known that his time would eventually come. No matter what he
had achieved, how many Immortals he had slain he himself was merely
human.
The thought brought a
fresh wave of bitterness to his mind as he once again remembered the
offer he had declined, his chance to escape the fate shown before
him. But now it was too late. He had managed to repair the friendship
he had once shared with Alucard, but never had he allowed anything
closer than that and Alucard hadn't tried either. So many years, so
many regrets, so much time wasted and now
he was just too old to consider Immortality.
The feel of strong arms
wrapping around him almost caused Walter to jump in surprise, coaxing
a small chuckle from Alucard's mouth. The vampire bent his head down,
nuzzling Walter's neck and letting his teeth graze it for the tiniest
of moments before he began to speak: “It is never to late for
forever, my Angel. Wake up!” The softly spoken command echoing
in the silence of the graveyard Alucard was gone.
