~~begin chapter 7
Derik had pulled the sheets and blankets up close to his chin and closed his eyes by the time Reis climbed in bed. When Reis touched his shoulder, he shrugged it off and pulled the covers tighter.
But Reis was determined to talk. “You’re not asleep already, Derik. Stop hiding. And tell me – have you fucked the pet?”
Derik sighed as he turned over and met Reis’ eyes. “Yes, I have,” he answered simply.
Reis studied his face. “Why were you hesitant to tell me?”
“Well – the boy belongs to you. I thought you might want to be first.”
“If you thought that, then you should have asked.” But Reis stroked Derik’s shoulder to take the sting from his words. “It’s fine – I told you he belonged to you, too.” He canted his head. “So, did you play with him?”
“Like you do with me? No – he’s different from us, Reis.” Derik shifted pillows behind himself – to prop himself against the bed’s headboard. “Anekin is… soft. He’s certainly experienced sexually, but he’s had no meaningful relationships in his life. He’s naive – and vulnerable – and soft.”
“And you like that?” Reis asked incredulously.
Derik met Reis’ gaze. He felt slightly foolish. Reis was right – such an impotent little twit had never appealed to him before. “I can’t explain it,” he said slowly. “The first time I saw him, I immediately started thinking of ways to torment him – to master him.” He shrugged. “And now I don’t. Anekin is already totally submissive. What would be the point?”
“The point? To enjoy him. Aren’t you curious about how I enjoy you?”
“That’s between us, Reis. I don’t need to hurt Anekin to enjoy him.”
Reis threw his head back and laughed. “I thought I’d taught you better than that.”
“Can we just go to sleep now? I’m tired.”
Reis was puzzled by Derik’s reaction, but he let it be – easing him back into lying down, tucking him into the covers and kissing him gently before speaking for the lights to dim.
But his mind played with what Derik said. And he thought of Anekin. Soft, submissive, Derik called him. After all this time, Derik still did not understand the game completely. Submission was only one aspect. It was creating fear that excited Reis. Inflicting pain. That Derik had come to enjoy having those things done to him – that he readily submitted to them – meant the game could continue. That Reis needn’t kill him – or tire of him. But the fear and pain were always necessary. Well, not always. Derik had taught him, too.
Maybe Derik would never feel the same needs. And that was alright, too. Reis would never require it of him. But they owned a pet, now. An experimental subject to dally with. Perhaps Derik could be enticed to enjoy him in that way.
And Reis could admit that the idea of a new victim appealed to him. One that he wouldn’t need to worry about harming permanently. One that he could dispose of. Like the games he played before Derik softened him. Before he came to love Derik.
But, of course, the pet could hardly serve that purpose if Derik was soft on him. Frustrating.
~~
The next week was spent almost entirely in front of the computer. Monitoring news of the new motorcycle franchise on Aeger. Monitoring Mink.
A single news article on Iason’s disappointment that the Jasten had appeared off world. But no tirade or threats.
“He won’t let it go that easily, Reis,” Derik warned.
“I’m aware of that,” Reis snapped. But then reached out to touch Derik’s hand. “I’m sorry,” he said softly. “I’m worried, too. I didn’t mean to take it out on you.”
Derik studied Reis’ face. Usually, he had boundless confidence – it was not like him to admit he was worried. “What else has happened?”
Reis sighed. “Probably nothing – but Thesden suspects he may have been hacked.” He held up his hand when Derik started to speak again. “I’ve got people looking into it. There’s nothing else to do right now. I should know how bad it is by tomorrow.”
Derik nodded slowly. “If you’re sure there’s nothing we can do, then do you think we could get out of here for a while? I’m sick of this office. And Anekin hasn’t been out of his room for the entire week.”
“Anekin?” Reis shook his head. “This should be time for us, Derik. You and me. The damn pet doesn’t need to go.”
Derik stared. Reis was much more upset than he’d suspected. What the hell was going on? Finally, he shrugged. “Whatever you want, Reis. Anekin doesn’t have to come with us.”
“Good,” Reis smiled. “Thank you. We can play with the pet tonight. Get a bottle of wine and whatever you want to eat on a picnic. I’ll get blankets.”
Derik gathered what he needed and put it all in a basket. He still worried about Anekin – but Reis was his primary concern.
Always. And he looked forward to this afternoon alone with him. Away from the office and business concerns.
~~
The sun was just beginning to set when Reis and Derik got home. They’d had a very pleasant afternoon at an Elite park. Derik had worn a collar and leash until they found a private area. But after that, there had been no question of Derik’s equality. He and Reis had spent long hours making love, laughing with one another and talking. But now that they were home, Reis was anxious to get back to the computer and see if there was any news.
Derik watched him head for his office again and then decided to visit Anekin. The boy was curled on the bed, naked – and Derik was immediately struck by how much weight he’d lost. His round buttocks had lost much of their fullness – his ribs showed clearly through his skin. How was that possible in just a week?
“Anekin,” Derik said angrily. “Wake up. What the hell is wrong with you?”
Anekin startled at the voice and struggled to wake up. “Master Derik,” he said as he managed to sit up. “What… what’s wrong, sir?”
“What’s wrong? You look like a damn skeleton, Anekin. Did you just decide to stop eating?”
Anekin colored. “I’m sorry, Master Derik. I… I haven’t felt hungry, sir.”
Derik’s anger disappeared at the boy’s sadness and he sat on the bottom of the bed. “Are you sick, Anekin? Is that why you don’t feel like eating?”
“No sir. I’m not sick, sir. It’s just…”
“What?” Derik prodded softly.
Anekin dropped his eyes. “I’m alone all the time, sir. I have nothing to do here, nothing to think about.” He hesitated – then rushed to add, “I’m sorry, sir. I don’t mean to complain.”
Derik gazed at Anekin’s thin, trembling shoulders. He’d wondered how the boy coped with being cooped up in his room all the time. Reis seemed to think the pet was mindless. Just as most elite thought of mongrels. He felt his anger build again. “Put on some clothes and join me in the kitchen.”
Anekin looked up to see Derik leave his room.
~~
Reis was sitting with Derik at the kitchen table when Anekin appeared. Reis turned on him immediately. “What the hell are you doing here?”
Derik touched his arm. “I invited him. I thought you’d be busy a while longer.”
Reis turned back to Derik. “Well, I’m not. Send him away.”
Derik looked from Reis to Anekin. “Go back to your room, Anekin,” he said quietly. “I’ll see you later.” The boy bowed his head in acknowledgement and slipped away. “Reis,” Derik said after Anekin was gone, “this has to stop. The boy will go insane if he has to stay in that room all alone. He needs interaction with other living beings and he needs something to do.”
“I don’t have time to worry about a damn pet, Derik. Not with everything else that’s going on.”
Derik’s forehead wrinkled. “Is there more news?”
“No, it’s not that – but Thesden isn’t taking the situation as seriously as he should. He all but told me I’m worrying for nothing. But I really wonder if he cleaned his computer as well as he should.”
“Hack him and find out.”
Reis’ face lit with a smile and he pulled Derik into a kiss. “You always cut through the crap. I’ll do that.”
“Do you need me?” Derik asked as Reis got up to go back to his office.
“No.” But Reis turned back and sighed. He didn’t like doing this – but Derik needed to be humored. “Why don’t you take charge with Anekin? Do whatever you think needs to be done.”
“Yes, Master,” Derik answered with a grin. “Thank you.”
~~
Anekin had curled into a tight ball on his bed and was sobbing. Loud enough that he didn’t hear the door open – or realize Derik was in the room until a hand touched his shoulder. He jerked upright in fear, though he sighed in relief as soon as he recognized who it was and wiped at his face. “I’m sorry, Master Derik.”
“Shut up.” But Derik wrapped the boy in his arms. “I’m sorry I didn’t check with Reis before I told you to come out. It was not your fault.”
Anekin looked into Derik’s eyes when he was released. “Why do you treat me like this?”
“Like what?” Derik mentally braced himself for Anekin’s barrage of grievances.
“Like I matter… Master Thaylen doesn’t even want me. Why are you so kind?”
Kind? Anekin thought him kind? Derik almost laughed. He left the boy in this little white room. With nothing. And he knew Anekin. Knew he must be miserable. I’m worse than Reis, he thought. Not better. Reis, at least, thought the boy mindless – and treated him so. I know better and still treat him the same. “I haven’t been kind, Anekin. But Reis has told me to try to make things better for you.”
“Master Thaylen said that, sir?”
Only a little lie… “Yes. Now, get up and fix your face. I’ll show you around and we’ll find something for you to do.”
“Yes, sir.” Anekin’s face turned into pure joy and he almost bounced into the bathroom.
Derik smiled at the sight and wondered again about his strange feelings for this slight little boy. Anekin was nothing like Reis – nothing like anyone he’d ever felt attracted to. But as mysterious – and as inconvenient – as this attraction was, he couldn’t deny it was there. Nor could he deny that Reis was not pleased by it.
He looked up when Anekin returned from the bathroom. Obviously, he’d washed his face, though his eyes still gave away that he’d cried. But he’d also pulled his hair back and used one of his new clasps. Pretty. Derik frowned at that thought.
And Anekin immediately thought he’d done something wrong. “Do you prefer my hair down, Master?”
“Damn it, Anekin – I told you not to call me that.”
Tears welled in the boy’s eyes again. “I’m sorry, sir.”
Derik shook his head. “Forget it. Come on – let’s go.”
They ended up in the kitchen and Derik started pointing out where things were kept. His words and actions were fast and clipped. Anekin watched him silently, trying desperately to retain the information. And knowing he couldn’t. “Master… Derik, sir,” he corrected himself quickly. “I can’t remember all this.”
“I don’t expect you to. Just listen for now.” Derik started opening drawers. Though both of them shifted their attention to the man now entering the kitchen.
In turn, Kader looked at them in surprise. “I was going to start dinner. Do you have other plans tonight, Derik?”
“No.” He took Anekin’s arm and pulled him forward, not even trying to hide his irritation. “This is Anekin, Lord Thaylen’s new pet. I was just showing him around the kitchen.” His eyes swept to the boy and back to Kader. “Can I leave him with you?” And get myself away from him… “Just sit him at the table if he’s in your way. But if he can be helpful, use him.”
Kader shrugged. “Fine with me. You still want Italian tonight?”
“Whatever Reis said.” Derik turned to Anekin again. “Behave yourself,” he warned. “Don’t get in the way.”
Anekin looked down. “Yes, sir.”
Derik was gone before another word could be spoken. Kader wondered what the timid boy had done – but held out his hand. “I’m Kader – the chef.”
Anekin looked at the hand. He’d seen men shake hands before, but no one had ever offered to do it with him. He took the hand and looked up. “Thank you, sir.”
Kader grinned. “So you’re a pet. Reis has never had a pet before. How did you come to be here?”
“I was a gift, sir. From Iason Mink.”
Kader studied him again. “Why would Mink give a pet to Reis?”
“I don’t know, sir. I… I think they have some sort of business dealings.”
“And what is it you do for Reis?”
Anekin colored. “Nothing yet, sir. But… but whatever he wants.”
Kader started to pull out what he needed for dinner. “Anything?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Hmmp.” Kader thrust a large pot into Anekin’s hands. “Fill this with water.”
The boy looked around, but he knew what a sink was and quickly figured out how to operate the water. He took back the pot, being careful not to spill the water. Kader took it from his hands. “A little heavy for you?”
“It shouldn’t be. I’m sorry, sir.” When Kader ignored his words and started chopping vegetables, Anekin watched in fascination. “What is Italian, sir?”
Kader laughed. “Beats me. Just a style of food that supposedly originated on another planet. Has a lot of onions and garlic.”
“And those other vegetables, too?”
“I doubt they’re the same as were used on Terra. But on Amoi, they’re the best substitute we have.” Kader laughed again. “Or, at least, we think so.”
Encouraged by Kader's openness, Anekin asked another question. “Have you worked for Master Thaylen very long, sir?”
“Almost ten years. Since before Derik came.”
Anekin backed away when Kader did not give him another task and just watched what he did.
After Kader had meat cooking, he called Anekin back. “Can you make coffee?”
“I did at Master Festus’ house. But… but I don’t understand the machine here, sir.”
“It’s not that hard. I’ll show you. Do you know where the coffee is?”
Anekin looked at a cabinet door. “In there, sir?”
“Very good – get it out.” Between the two of them – Anekin doing most of the work at Kader’s instructions – the pot was soon brewing. “I think you should take some to Reis and Derik.” Again, Kader instructed Anekin and soon a tray was prepared.
“Where do I take it, sir?”
“The office is down that hall,” Kader pointed. “First room on the right.” He watched the boy make his way – and smiled at the gentle sway of his hips. If not for Derik, he could well imagine how Reis would use Anekin.
~~
Reis looked up from the computer first. “Don’t dawdle, boy. If you’ve brought coffee, get it in here.”
Derik stood up, took the tray and sat it on a work table. “Do you know how to serve?”
“Yes, Master Derik. Just tell me how you like it, sir.”
“Two sweeteners for me. Reis likes cream.” Derik took his seat again and stared over Reis’ shoulder at the screen.
Reis was speaking as Anekin approached with the cups. “I can’t find anything to indicate he’s even had a file on the Jasten. Much less that he’s deleted it.” Reis took both cups and started to sip at his own as Derik typed at the keyboard. “What are you looking for?”
“I’m searching for bike and ride. Things a mongrel might look for.” Derik took his cup from Reis and drank while he waited for the search to complete.
“Thesden isn’t a mongrel. Why would he use those terms?”
“Maybe he wouldn’t – but they’re something Katze would think of.” Derik looked at Anekin. “Did you ever meet Katze?”
“No, Master. But Riki spoke of him sometimes.”
“For Jupiter’s sake, Anekin – stop calling me Master.”
Reis broke out laughing before Anekin could say anything. “He’s a pet, Derik. It’s what he’s supposed to call you.”
“Even when I tell him repeatedly not to?”
Reis smiled and looked between Anekin and Derik. “That does make it more complicated. Perhaps the pet needs to be punished for disobedience.”
The computer made a small sound and both men looked at the screen, ignoring the look of fear on Anekin’s face. “Well, no mongrel terms,” Derik said as he leaned to Reis and kissed his cheek. “I’m glad you were right.”
“Back us out of Thesden’s terminal.” Reis stood, took Derik’s cup and handed both to Anekin. “Refills. Mine was satisfactory.” He looked at Derik again. “Yours?”
“Yeah, fine.”
Anekin refilled each cup, handed them to Reis and Derik, and stepped back.handed each man his cup and stepped back. Reis looked at him irritably. “You're done now. Take the tray and get back to the kitchen.”
When the boy was gone, Reis nibbled at Derik’s neck. “Can we please have the pet perform tonight?”
Derik turned and met Reis’ eyes. “You don’t have to ask me.”
“Yes, I do. I put you in charge of him. If you don’t think he’s ready…”
“You mean – if I’m not ready.”
“Maybe. Are you?”
Derik thought of his emotions when he found Anekin sobbing. How he pitied the boy. And wanted him. It was ridiculous. “I’m ready, Reis. Whatever you want.”
“Even to punish him?”
Derik recognized the challenge. He nodded. “If that’s what you want, Reis.”
~~
Kader called Lamas on the intercom to ask him to help Anekin serve dinner. “The pet’s never done it before. He told me he likes you.”
“Yeah. I like him, too.” No wonder he likes me. I’m the only person he ever sees. “Be right there.”
Kader spoke quietly with Lamas before he had him take Anekin.
Lamas was smiling when he turned to the boy. “Ready?”
“Yes, sir.”
The dining room was next to the kitchen, but Lamas deliberately took Anekin through the hall so he could see more of the house. “Kader says you were very helpful.”
Anekin smiled. “He is kind, sir. I just did what he told me.”
“He’ll ask for your help again. It should help get you out of that room.”
“That would be very nice, sir.”
“Here’s the dining room.” Lamas showed him where plates and silverware and glasses were kept. And then how to set the table properly. “Did you do this for your other master?”
“Yes, sir. But his things were not so nice.” Anekin looked at all the dinnerware and traced his fingers over the raised pattern. “This is so beautiful.”
“It’s very old. From his mother’s family.”
“He had a mother?” Anekin looked at Lamas in surprise. “I thought only mongrels had mothers on Amoi.”
“Generally. But some of the old families have refused to give in to Jupiter’s breeding program. Though this may be the last generation of naturally born men.”
“Why, sir?”
“No female children have been born to the old aristocrats for over twenty years. There is no longer anyone for the men to marry.”
Anekin nodded thoughtfully. He had been told there was no marriage on Amoi. On Aeger, marriage was declining. Festus was quite happy to have his sons born in a laboratory – he felt it made him more like the Elite of Amoi. Everyone on Aeger seemed to want to be more like those on Amoi. “Does Master Thaylen want to marry, sir?”
It was a bad moment for him to ask – Reis and Derik were coming in. And Reis’ voice was most definitely angry. “That is none of your business, Anekin. If I ever hear that you have asked questions about me again, you will be very sorry. Do I make myself clear?”
“Yes sir, Master Thaylen. I’m sorry, sir.”
Derik tried to calm Reis. “The boy knows nothing of our world, Reis. He didn’t mean to be rude.”
“Enough, Derik – even from you.”
After such an inauspicious beginning, the remainder of the meal went well. Lamas showed Anekin how to serve the meal and he quickly adapted the new things to what he already knew. He was nervous when Lamas took the remainder of dinner back to the kitchen and left him alone, but he stood quietly and filled glasses with wine as they emptied.
Reis was in a better mood and talked quietly with Derik. Anekin could hear nothing and was happy to have it so. He almost sighed in relief when they seemed to be ready to leave the dining room. He stood back against the wall, waiting for them to go. But Reis turned to him again. “Clean yourself – inside and out. Then come to our bedroom.”
“Yes sir, Master Thaylen.”
Derik did not even look his way.
Anekin gathered up the dirty dishes and took them to the kitchen. Then the glasses. Kader instructed him to wash them – but Anekin stood before him and trembled. “Master Thaylen has called me to his bedroom, sir.”
“And you have to prepare?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Go ahead to your room. I’ll send Lamas to help you.”
~~
Lamas was waiting when Anekin got out of the shower. He handed the boy a hair-dryer. “Do you know how to use this?”
“Yes, sir. Thank you.”
When Anekin stood motionless, Lamas asked why he waited.
“Master Thaylen said I must clean myself inside, too, sir. But… but I don’t have the tools, sir.”
“Alright – the same things Derik uses. I’ll get them. Dry your hair in the meantime.”
Lamas helped Anekin when he returned. And then prepared him with oils, stretching him with his fingers. “Do you know how to do these things yourself?”
“Yes, sir. But it takes me more time by myself.”
“Hopefully, you’ll have the time from now on.” Lamas grinned. “I don’t much enjoy doing this when I get no benefit from it.”
Anekin looked up. “I’m sorry, sir. Perhaps Master Thaylen will permit you to use me.”
Lamas’ grin disappeared. “That shouldn’t be Reis’ decision.”
Anekin was only confused. Such things were never up to him. Festus had enjoyed watching other pets take him. Had shared him freely with his friends and business associates.
Lamas was speaking again. “Do you know where Reis’ bedroom is?”
“No, sir.”
Lamas forced himself to be calm – and not frighten Anekin any further. He summoned a smile. “Then I’ll continue your tour of the house.” He kept Anekin by his side as they made their way.
Reis and Derik were sitting on the couch in their room when Lamas knocked on the door and entered. Reis looked up and smiled. “Leave him, Lamas. I’ll call you when we’re done with him.”
Lamas had no choice. He nodded and left the frightened boy.
