chapter 7: Peeping Tombot
“It’s been three days!” Abel’s voice rose loudly in challenge to the comments of his fellow clergy members.
“Abel, we must leave her be. She is an adult, she knows what she can handle and what she can’t.” Leon shrugged as if they were discussing the weather.
“She needs rest. I’m going to go get her.”
“Abel, she will rest when her mind allows it. When she is ready to tell us what she has found, she will tell us.” Hugue sat in the shadowed corner of the room, almost hidden from view if not for his legs lightly crossed in a patch of light from a nearby lamp.
“Humans are not meant to stay awake without food for three days! She is going to make herself sick!”
“Well technically, since she’s had a steady supply of water, thanks to Tres, she can go quite some time without food.” William sounded too medical for Abel’s taste. He momentarily thought about snatching the pipe from him and crushing it.
“Technically? So we should sit by while she refuses to eat just because we know she can? We also know that it’s not healthy!”
“All right, Abel. I think it’s time to take a breath and settle down.” Lady Catherina’s voice rose above the conversation, instantly commanding attention. “This young lady sounds quite remarkable. I’m quite certain she has some information that could very well change the balance of power in the world. It is admirable that she devotes herself so fully to finding the right answer. There have been many lesser humans in her position before that have announced their findings to the world without examining the full impact of those findings. Such deeds have never gotten us anywhere desirable before, so why should it now?” Catherina smiled gently, her monocle glimmering in the light.
“But... Catherina...” His voice grew soft, almost a desperate whisper. His look pleaded with her and she softened. It had been a long time since he’d used her name and not her proper title.
“Tres is with her. When the bell tolls for nightly prayers, go and relieve him. Try to convince her, but do not force her, to take a break and sleep.”
“Thank you, Your Eminence!” with that, Abel took a glance at the large standing clock in her office and took off for the far off corridor where he knew Alex sat reading. The door clicked softly and Catherina turned to the others.
“What impressions do you have of this woman?” No one offered any information willingly, so she decide to play it grade school style.
“Vaclav.”
“Yes, Your Eminence?”
“What do you think of her?”
“I’m not entirely sure, My Lady. She is very well trained with a gun and a long blade. She killed a methuselah with hardly any effort the first night we met her.”
“This is the first I’ve heard of this.”
“Yeah, she shot a bunch of locks off so we could get into the dig site to search for that notebook she’s so obsessed with. She wasn’t even looking at them!” Leon’s boisterous proclamation revealed just how impressed he’d been by that trick.
“She’s not only a good fighter, she is educated as well.” Hugue finally spoke up from his shadows. “She knows much about art in many parts of the world, she speaks fluent French and Latin, and she has traveled through much of the world.”
“So, she sounds like quite a renaissance woman.”
“The question seems to be can we trust her though. I don’t know that we can.” Esther spoke up finally, her hands wringing the cloth of her uniform.
“Does anyone else distrust her?”
“I think it wise to be wary of the entire situation. I would very much like to see these notes that she insists are so important. However, I do not feel any ill will from her. I don’t feel as thought we should be particularly on guard around her.” William took a deep drag after his short speech.
“Neither do I sense any malevolence from her.” Hugue’s soft voice echoed William’s sentiments.
“Hey, I think she’s fine.” Leon grinned and shrugged.
“I do not sense malice either, Your Eminence.”
“I see. As soon as she is rested and finished with that notebook I want to see her and all of you back in this room. It seems we have some things to discuss.”
Tres had been watching Alex for about twenty minutes, fascinated with her sleeping face. It was late and the study corridor had cleared out long ago, leaving Tres and Alex alone. The only other people he’d ever seen sleeping were Lady Catherina and Abel. Neither were so animated in their sleep. Alex’s lips moved almost imperceptibly as if she were carrying on a conversation. Her breathing wasn’t as even as most people’s in their sleep and Tres listened to the slightly sharp intakes and languid exhales that punctuated her breathing pattern. Her eyes crinkled slightly in the corners, only to release moments later. Tres was suddenly gripped by an urge to tuck her hair behind her ear. He searched his memory and could recall seeing a similar scene between Abel and Esther on their journey to Rome, but could not understand why he felt the need to re-enact this scenario with Alexandra. Before Tres could answer his urge or even contemplate it further, he heard footsteps coming down the hall toward them.
As Father Nightroad entered the hall Tres appeared to be merely sitting perfectly vigilant alongside a now sleeping Alex. Abel smiled with relief to see he wouldn’t need to argue with the young woman. He spoke quietly to Tres, instructing him to report to Lady Catherina. After Tres left to do as he was told, Abel tucked the notebook into his robes and gathered Alex up. She snuggled into his collar and made some fussing noises before sliding back into a restless sleep. Abel walked slowly with her, listening intently to her quiet breathing. He wasn’t quite sure where to take her and decided the general guests’ quarters were better than the dormitories, especially since wasn’t technically allowed into the nuns’ dormitories. The guests’ quarters were actually quite lavish and as he entered the large room he struggled to close the heavy door behind him. Walking over to the large bed, he set Alexandra down on the sheets only to find that she had a near death grip on his collar. He brushed a few stray hairs from her face and called to her softly.
“Alexandra. Alex, wake up...” As Abel brushed the last hair from her face her eyes fluttered open, only half-mast.
“Mmm.” She stretched a little, closing her eyes again. When she opened her eyes, she looked slightly surprised to see Abel sitting on the edge of the bed.
“Is something wrong, Alexandra?” Abel smiled down at her, his silver hair shining brightly in the moonlight pouring through the window.
“Nothing at all. This is just simply the best dream I’ve ever had.” Alex smiled sleepily. Abel laughed and kissed her forehead.
“Must be a nightmare then.”
“No. The best kind of dream ever.” Alex brushed her fingers over Abel’s cheek, closing her eyes again as her fingertips traveled down his neck a little. Alex could feel his mood change almost like heat coming off him.
“Alex...”
“I’m sorry, Father,” her sentence was interrupted by a yawn as she pulled her hand away. Her hand was stayed by his own as he slid her cuff up just slightly. Alex opened her eyes, quite alert now, watching his next move. Abel kissed her wrist softly and she shuddered, watching him intently. She felt his lips part slowly, his warm breath against her skin, and softly his tongue slipped between his lips to trace a line across her wrist. Alex whimpered and the noise seemed like an obscene form of begging in her own ears. Abel continued his motions, opening his eyes to glance at her over his glasses and Alex felt warmth pool in unspeakable places.
“Nothing to be sorry for, Alex.” Abel released her wrist and watched her like a starving wolf as she sat up in bed.
“No, I haven’t properly showered in over 24 hrs and I’m sure I could be far more pleasant for you.” Alex grinned sheepishly. Abel laughed his deep rumbling laugh and Alex felt more warmth gather. “My stomach is also growling like a ravenous beast, so I should probably go a-hunting. Anyone up to make food this time of night?”
“I am. I assure you, you smell and taste quite wonderful. However, there is a shower here and if you want to make use of it I can see what I can scrounge up in the kitchens.”
Alex blushed the brightest she’d ever blushed in front of Abel and tried to hide it by letting her hair fall over her face. Abel quickly reached out a hand, tucking her hair behind her ear with his impossibly long fingers. Alex, convinced she was possessed by some unseen force that rendered her temporarily brain dead, captured Abel’s wrist as he had hers and kissed it with the same gentleness.
Her heart was thundering a painful rhythm in her ears as her face flamed in embarrassment. She slowly lifted her eyes to his and licked his skin, mimicking his own teasing. Abel had that same hungry look on his face and Alex was suddenly driven to drag her teeth lightly over the delicate skin she was already torturing. Abel’s face contorted into an almost painful mask and he snatched his wrist from her grasp. Her mind barely had time to wonder if he was disgusted before his lips came crashing down on hers. Alex made a desperate muffled sound, running her fingers to the base of his neck, squeezing slightly as he ravaged her mouth. His intensity was almost enough to bruise her and his roving tongue left no niche undiscovered. Her mind was just starting to pull out of the fog to remind her to breathe when Abel pulled away, panting, his forehead resting against hers.
“Abel...” He silenced her with another kiss, this time on her neck. The warmth astonished her as he licked the curve of her neck and shoulder. Alex became completely pliant as she felt her mind become increasingly foggy under his affections and her own lack of sleep. “Abel... Your hair...”
“Yes, Alex? What about it.” He breathed against her skin and she shuddered, an indecent moan slipping past her lips. Alex felt some strong emotion coming from him as if his entire being throbbed beside her. He had stopped to answer her and she began trembling at his steady breathing against her throat.
“I-I... want... to grip it.” Alex flushed again, ashamed at her wanton request. Abel chuckled, his lips pressed to her skin, sending that delicious rumbling down her spine and straight to the warmth that now made her cross her legs in shame. The motion was not lost on Abel, whose personality seemed to have changed, as it always did, when he was alone and not entertaining the presence of several peers. He ran a hand down her thigh, pulling her legs open again, rubbing the muscle with his thumb in slow strong circles.
“Why would you want to do that, beautiful Alexandra?” She could hear the smile he wore in his voice.
“Because...” Her breathing was already ragged and he had barely touched her. “When you touch me like that... I feel like the world is falling away.”
Abel became eerily still beside her, his breathing silent. She felt that throbbing coming off him again and he seemed impossibly warm, like sitting next to a fire. Had she upset him? His lips rested against her neck and she was almost certain she could feel his teeth underneath them, he was holding her so tight.
“Alex, you make a priest forget his duties.” Alex flushed horribly, feeling suddenly quite ashamed of herself in expecting Abel to continue in his ministrations. She felt anger rising, along with the stinging prelude to tears.
“Forgive me, Father. I misread you.” Alex pulled her legs shut tightly, shrugging his hand off, as she tried to stand. He held her fast and ran his elegant long fingers into her hair, sending shivers down her spine.
“I did not say that I was unhappy to forget those duties occasionally. I am a man as well as a priest, and you are nothing short of breathtaking.” Alex ducked her head at this and Abel massaged her scalp. “I’ll stop harassing you, Alex. Go take your shower and when you are finished I will have dinner here for you.” Abel gave her a hug before turning to leave. He made it to the door before he heard Alex’s soft voice.
“Abel.”
“Yes, Alex?”
“You can harass me whenever you want.” Abel grinned lasciviously at her and winked before leaving her to her shower.
Alex wasted no time getting into the shower and scrubbing herself and washing out her waist-length hair. It felt good to be clean again and she stretched over and over, stopping periodically to just stand in the warm water. She thought she heard the outer door close and she turned off the shower, squeezing some of the water out of her hair. As she stepped out of the shower she looked up to find Tres in the process of setting fresh towels on the rack on the wall. She wondered if blushes could become permanent and if the android would even pay any mind to her nudity.
“Father Nightroad asked me to deliver these to you.”
“Thank you, Tres. I didn’t hear you step in.” Alex casually wrapped a towel around herself , though it didn’t cover enough in her opinion, and watched as Tres seemed to be waiting for something. “Get an eye full?”
“My apologies, Ma’am. I did not mean to intrude, but you terminated your cleansing as I walked into the room. You may carry out punishment as you see fit. I await your dismissal.” Alex chuckled. Somehow the apology, recited without much inflection, seemed like a bland recording.
“I won’t punish you, Tres. I just want your honest opinion: how do I look?” Alex chuckled as she opened her towel for his inspection, wondering if he would actually get her joke. To Alex’s mortification he began looking her up and down.
“Request acknowledged. Your body conforms to the local standard of beauty to within ninety percent accuracy. It is therefore my opinion that you are considered beautiful.” Alex’s jaw collided with the tiled floor. His view was based on statistics, but apparently he was capable of forming a view. He most assuredly didn’t pick up on her joke, though.
“Thank you, Tres. That’s sweet of you.”
“You are welcome. I await your dismissal.”
“By all means! You are dismissed. Thanks for the ego boost.”
“Vernacular string not found. Define ‘ego boost’.” Alex laughed, shaking her head as she began brushing her hair.
“An ego boost means you made someone feel better about themselves.”
“Definition stored. Good night, Alexandra.”
“Good night, Tres.”
Alex walked him to the door and just as she was closing it, she heard Abel call for her to open the door. She did so and he all but gawked at her as he set the trays on the table in the small dining area of the chamber. Alex blushed, her hair and skin still dripping from her shower. Abel approached her, his eyes taking her in. Alex blushed and he felt his own blood rush away from his face and somewhere else.
“So, is this your normal attire when you answer the door?” Alex laughed outright at the jealousy in his question.
“No. Tres brought me towels and he just startled me, that’s all. He seemed like he was in a rush to remove himself from the situation and kept apologizing.” Abel seemed to bristle slightly at this news, though his voice remained even.
“Is that so?”
“Well...”
“So just how much did he see?”
“Well, I was stepping out of the shower... Look, it’s not a huge deal, he’s an android. He probably didn’t even realize anything was wrong.”
“I’ll bet he did, why else would he be eager to leave? Well, I must say I feel quite shorted.” Alex laughed again as he crossed his arms over his chest.
“Shorted? What, you want a show too?” Alex laughed again, but when her eyes met Abel’s, his face was even and serious, just like his tone. “You can’t be serious...”
“Well of course you don’t have to. I just didn’t realize you were into metal that much.” Alex choked on her laugh, taking in the pout on Abel’s face.
“All right then, Father. Come here.” Alex’s look became feral and she grinned as he reached for her. “Wait!” Alex stood on tiptoe, releasing his gorgeous hair. His hair cascaded around him, forming a shimmering silver halo in the dim moonlight cast through the window. Abel’s fingers reached slowly for her towel, waiting for objection. When none came, he gave a gentle tug and let the towel fall, pooling at her feet. Alex kept her gaze locked on her toes as Abel stood silently in front of her. He was so silent it began to echo in her ears and panic began to rise and flood her thoughts. She crossed her arms over her chest and crossed her legs, bowing her head further.
Abel’s warm fingers brushed over her chin, raising it so he could look at her. He’d removed his glasses and they were nowhere in sight, presumably in a robe pocket. He looked the same, yet entirely different when he was natural like this with her. His expression was awed as he examined her, his fingers falling to her shoulder, down her arm and finally to the blue at her side. Abel turned her so her back faced him and ran his fingers down the other side, her right side, tracing the red that flowed down her side and over the small of her back. Alex raise her arms so he could see all the detail painted into her skin. There, on each side, the wings of a phoenix spread under each breast, the mouth open in song. The bodies flowed down her sides and finally the tails intertwined and crossed over her lower back. The right was rendered in red, orange, and yellow flames, while the other was rendered is shockingly beautiful blue water. Just as Abel was about to pull away and ask about the tattoo, he saw a beautiful spindly script written along the edge of each bird. On the left were the words ‘believe in yourself’ and along the right side read ‘when no one else will’.
“Alex, it’s...” Abel was at a loss
“Extreme? Overdone? Too much? Yeah, I've heard it all before.”
“What? Not at all, it’s breathtaking.”
“I’ve always relied on my spark to get me through life, but I can’t always be a fire, sometimes I just have to flow like water.”
“It’s beautiful, and it suits you, because you are beautiful as well, Alex.” Alex ducked her gaze a little and turned back to him and he took her body in with the moonlight. His gaze stopped when he came across several horizontal lines that were all too straight and perfect as they marred her left thigh. “Alex...” He reached out to caress the scars and was unable to finish his question.
“I was alone. I had no one in this whole world and I needed relief. This is all I could find. I tried to kill the pain, but only brought more. One night I went deeper than I should have, and I couldn’t stop the bleeding. The rest of the scars have heeled, but these gave me some trouble and now I can’t bring myself to try to make them fade. I was creating a roadmap in my skin. I wanted to know where I was, so I would never forget how I’d gotten there.” Alex had a dead expression as this confession left her lips.
“Oh, Alexandra.” Abel gathered her towel, wrapping her in it, pulling her close as she trembled against his chest. He stroked her hair for a long time, until the trembling stopped and for the first time in all her life Alex realized that she’d found someone reliable.
“Abel, I don’t think I’ll ever finish the map. I don’t need it anymore.” Alex nuzzled into his neck and intertwined their fingers. Abel nodded and she turned to get dressed. She wore black silk pants and a black silk tank top and was ready for bed when she remembered that Abel had brought her food. They sat and ate in relative silence, sitting quite close to one another. When they finished they left the trays for the morning and Alex followed Abel to the door. They kissed and held each other for several moments before breaking away for air.
“You’re really too good at that.” Alex breathed raggedly against his neck.
“It’s easy when you have a stimulating partner.” Abel played with the damp strands of her long hair. “Get some sleep, beautiful Alexandra. Tomorrow Lady Catherina will call on you and you will be asked about those notes.”
“I’ll try. Just... ask her to wait until later? I might be sleeping a while.” Alex smiled lopsidedly and Abel nodded, smiling at her. He kissed the back of her hand and winked.
“Good night, Alex.”
“Good night Abel.”
As Alex crawled into bed, her stomach revolted at the thought of having an audience with Catherina Sforza, but she shoved those thoughts away quickly and replaced them with thoughts of Abel’s warm searching fingers. She fell into a deep sleep, dreaming of silver hair and moonlight.
