DarkCrusnikMagician: Wouldn't it be a twist? ;) They've been on speaking terms, it's just that Alex has steadily been avoiding everyone but the cardinal (and by everpresent association, Tres). SQUEE! I just want to randomly post the chapter that intros the kids just so it can be written and done with, but I can't do that. We must go in order! Anyway, hope you enjoy!
Darkephoenix: :""> mewf :3 yeah, I'm making Cain as sick and twisted and impossibly beautiful as I possibly can. Is it working? And I'm honored that you enjoy my story as well! I guess we'll have to be mutually and deeply honored. More squeeing! I miss squeeing ;P
winterfrau: Well, we'll have to see if the dream means anything or was just a dream, and we'll have to see if Cain uses Cendricus. That would be interesting though, wouldn't it? ;)
Read on everyone and drop me a line to let me know you're alive and still reading, if not kicking!
Chapter 6: Come Away With Me
Abel offered Alex his arm out of habit as they left her room for Lady Catherina’s office. Alex hesitated, looking up into Abel’s patient face. Sighing softly, she took his arm, her gaze falling automatically to her feet. She could feel Abel’s eyes on her, could feel the gentle smile that illuminated his features. She looked up into his face and couldn’t help but return his smile. She could feel his happiness washing over her, infecting her. They didn’t say anything else on the way to the Cardinal’s office, but they walked on, content inside their own thoughts. Alex shoved her guilt down and even leaned into Abel’s arm a little as they walked, remembering a time when this would have felt perfectly normal. When they reached the Cardinal’s office and knocked, Alex withdrew her arm and crossed her arms over her chest. Abel gave her shoulder a comforting squeeze, trying to reassure her.
“Relax, Alex. I’m sure they’re fine.”
“Enter.” The Cardinal’s voice rang smoothly behind the heavy door and Alex stepped inside as Abel held the door for her. Tres cast her a nervous glance as she entered, and she smiled apologetically at him. Tres grinned at her and the Cardinal smiled to see her in better spirits.
“Has Kate got a line to the Empire yet?” Alex’s voice came tumbling out in a strange shaky timber.
“She’s working on it. Your children have a good habit of wandering and it’s taking the officials some time to find them. Ilarius was the easiest to locate, but the other two are less inclined to read in the libraries all day, and more inclined to play.” Alex wrung her hands nervously as they all waited to hear word from Kate. Abel took a seat in front of Lady Catherina’s desk, offering the free chair to Alex. She seemed too lost in her own worrisome train of thought and shooed away the chair with an impatient wave of her hand, only to accept and sit down moments later. When Kate’s wizened image appeared beside the Cardinal’s desk, Alex nearly jumped from her skin.
“Have you gotten a hold of them, Kate?”
“The officials assure me that all have reported for their afternoon lessons, but only Cendricus has excused himself. He wishes to speak with you, if you’re ready.”
“Yes, put him through please.” Alex’s voice seemed even more tremulous at the news and Abel watched as her fingers wrung the fabric of her skirt.
“Relax Alex. Seth wouldn’t tell us they were fine if they weren’t.” Abel beamed reassuringly at her and she felt some relief despite herself. As soon as Abel fell silent, a glimmering version of her teenaged son appearing before her. His blonde mop half hung in his eyes and his face lit up the moment he saw Alexandra.
“Mother!”
“Cendricus, is everything all right?” The boy’s face scrunched in confusion.
“Of course, but you hailed the Empire, asking to speak with us, didn’t you? We thought something was wrong on your end.” Cendricus regarded her as though he thought she were not quite sound and Alex smiled wearily at him.
“Just a bad dream, love.” Cendricus’s expression softened, but he still gazed at her intently as though he could discern the entire truth merely by staring at her long enough. Abel watched as Alexandra’s shoulders slumped, her muscles finally relaxing, releasing their long-held tension.
“A bad dream? What was it about?” He watched her shrewdly and though they were too far apart for him to probe her mind, she got the distinct impression that he would have tried had he been able.
“Nothing important, dear. I suppose I’m going senile in my old age. I just wanted to check on my babies and make sure everything is all right. I take it you’re studying hard and not picking on your brother?” Cendricus immediately switched gears, slumping in his chair, one leg falling over the arm rest, as he crossed his arms in a classic pout.
“As if I would pester him. He’s always buried in a book, why would I waste my time constantly prowling the library? He’s such a nerd.”
“Don’t be mean Cendricus. Besides, what’s wrong with being a nerd? I’m a nerd, so watch your mouth!” Alex got a round of snickers from the adults in the room and Cendricus smiled appreciatively at his mother, relaxing his stance a little.
“Are you feeling better, Mother?”
“Better? Better than what?”
“Better than... normal.” Cendricus’s manner darkened a little as though he were speaking of a shameful family secret.
“You know how it is, Cendricus. Some days are good, some days are bad, and some days just are.” She smiled warmly at her son, taking in all the details of his youthful face. “I’ve missed you, love. Are you all doing okay, truly?”
“If you’re wondering if we’ve missed you too, the answer is yes. The little one came crying to me the other day, asking when we were going to see you next. Ilarius doesn’t act like it, but he misses you the most.” Alex smiled at her son’s uncanny ability to know exactly what she was thinking even when she was too embarrassed to ask it.
“I got your letter.”
“You did?”
“I certainly did. I also read Aunty Seth’s letter about how rude you were to the Viscountess of Odessa during your combat training.” Cendricus gulped visibly and shrugged, casting an almost flirtatious grin at Alex, trying to maintain his too cool air.
“It wasn’t rude, it was simple conversation. She said my technique was wildly uncoordinated and I simply suggested that the things around her might not seem so wild if she learned to relax.” Cendricus smiled, his canines a bit sharper than a normal human’s.
“How beautifully euphemistic. The way I understood it, you told her in no uncertain terms that she needed to get laid so she would loosen up a bit.” Cendricus chuckled nervously, running a hand through his hair, while the adults in Catherina’s office cleared their throats, shifting uneasily.
“Is that what I said? I’m afraid I don’t recall my words exactly...” Cendricus trailed off, pretending to be preoccupied with something on the tiles at his feet.
“Cendricus.” Alex’s tone was chiding, and Cendricus gazed at her, instantly apologetic.
“I’m sorry, Mother.”
“Don’t apologize to me, love. Please try to remember that your Aunt is doing this out of the goodness of her heart, and it’s quite a big favor to ask, looking after your safety, comfort, and education. Besides, it’s doubly rude because Astharoshe is your Father’s tovarish, and--” Cendricus broke her off, his expression clouding over.
“He isn’t my Father!” Alex was quiet for a moment, regarding her son. She knew that she should encourage Cendricus to create a positive bond with Abel, but how could she expect him to be so accepting of the very man she had trouble accepting herself?
“Cendricus, he is your biological Father and he deserves respect. Abel is a good man, and it doesn’t just cast a bad light on you when you speak ill of his comrades. He doesn’t deserve the backlash for your rash actions. I won’t have you talking to family friends that way and I will most certainly not have you speaking to women that way. Are we clear?”
“Crystal, Mother.” Cendricus’s drone was lackluster at best and Alexandra just stared at him, boring into him with her expectant glare. “All right! I’m sorry I said that about the Duchess of Kiev. I will apologize to her as soon as I’m done speaking with you and I apologize for speaking ill of... Father.”
“That’s my love.” Alex positively beamed at her son and he soon melted under the brilliance of one of her rare but genuine smiles.
“You’re not angry with me still?” The confidence left Cendricus’s voice and expression and he looked at her as though he were expecting her to scream at him.
“I was upset when I heard what you said, considering how very vulgar it was, but my disappointment is erased in the face of your willingness to admit it was wrong and atone for it. But you know what would make me even more proud?”
“Not saying things like that in the first place?” Cendricus adopted a rather sheepish grin, attempting to hide behind his unruly hair.
“Ever perceptive, love.” Alex smiled, suddenly overcome wish an intense desire to see her children. “I miss you Cendricus.” Alex successfully hid the tremor in her voice, but Cendricus didn’t need to hear it to know that his Mother was upset.
“I miss you too, Mom.” Cendricus was swept with a similar feeling of longing and melancholy. “Can’t we come see you, Mom?” Cendricus leaned forward in his seat, a pleading look in his eyes.
“You know that when there is a break in your studies you will all come visit, just like always.” Alex could feel tears prickling at the back of her eyes.
“Why can’t we just visit now?” Cendricus barely contained the whine in his words.
“Cendricus, please, don’t argue with me on this. You need to study.” Her son sighed, his gaze telling her he had more to say, but didn’t wish to pester her further.
“Yes, Mother.”
“Now, get back to your lesson and tell your siblings that I love them and miss them very much. Give the little one a great big hug for me, ok?” Alex smiled, biting the inside of her cheek.
“All right.” Cendricus stood up and smiled a little sadly at his mother. “I love you, Mother.” Alex bit her lip, trying her best to smile for her son.
“I love you too, Chéri.” Cendricus’s image dissolved and Alex closed her eyes to hold back those insistent tears.
“Lady Alexandra, are you all right?” Kate’s gentle voice roused Alex from her struggle for composure.
“Yes, Kate. Thank you so much. I really needed to see my children. I suppose it would be rude of me to disrupt everyone’s lessons just to say hi, but I’m glad to see them all right and... acting themselves. Thank you, Kate.” Alex stood and Kate nodded respectfully. “Thank you, Mother, for letting us use your office.”
“Anytime, Alex.”
“Sorry about this morning, Tres.”
“Don’t worry about it. It’s not everyday a beautiful woman threatens me with a deadly weapon. It was kind of exciting.” He grinned at her and she shook her head, smiling at his antics. Alex made for the door and left, letting the heavy wood thump quietly behind her.
“Abel, go after her.” Catherina voiced Kate and Tres’s thoughts and Abel rose to follow her, the door thumping shut again.
“Do you think they’ll get back together?” Kate asked a little shyly.
“I think they will.” Tres’s reply sounded quite confident and both women turned and looked at him curiously. “Well, if I knew there was a glimmer of hope with someone like Alex, I would never give up. I’m pretty sure Abel wouldn’t either.” Both women nodded and Kate said her good byes before dissolving, leaving the Cardinal to her paperwork and Tres to his guard duty.
“Alex!” Abel jogged to catch up to her and she turned, stopping in the hallway so he could catch up.
“Yes, Abel?” He smiled and nearly forgot to respond, he was so thrown off by her warmer-than-usual manner.
“Alex, may I spend some time with you?” Alex looked at him for a moment as though she thought he were making fun of her.
“Are you serious?”
“Of course I am. Come with me into town. It’s been a long time since you left the Vatican grounds.”
“Watching that closely, are you?” Abel blushed slightly, his expression dimming. “I don’t know, Abel.”
“We can go get lunch at a café and just walk around Rome for a while.” Alex sighed, looking up into his eyes, drawn in by the hope twinkling behind his glasses.
“All right.” Abel looked like the Cardinal had just given him a permanent and unlimited budget.
“You mean it, Alex? You’ll really go with me?”
“Yes, Abel, I’ll go. We can’t spend all day in town though, we have to report for training with the Hellsing group at sunset.”
“Yes, I’ll get us back on time! Thank you, Alex.” He was positively beaming and Alex was already beginning to second guess her decision.
“Don’t wet yourself. I just need to go and change. I don’t want to be trudging around in a skirt and heels on the cobblestones.”
Abel was practically jumping for joy half an hour later as they walked, arm in arm, through the cobblestoned streets of Rome. She was smiling, despite her earlier reservations, and they managed to keep their lively conversation going until they found a quiet café with outside seats. Their food came and Abel coaxed Alex to eat for the first time in a few days.
“Do you really not feel the need to eat more often than you actually do?” Abel had moved his chair closer to hers hours before when they’d finished eating and now he was leaning in to speak softly to her about something he knew would be a sensitive subject. She couldn’t help but smile at the way he struggled to avoid anything that could be misconstrued as hurtful to her.
“Well, I usually do feel hunger more often than I eat, but I don’t feel like eating most of the time. Does that make any sense?”
“I suppose. Is it a motivational thing?”
“I guess. It’s like... I’m not hungry enough to bother with eating. I only need to eat normally or voraciously when I’m injured.”
“Hmm.” Abel fell silent and watched as she took a small bite of the slice of cake she’d ordered.
“Want some?” Abel wasn’t sure he’d heard her right until she lifted a forkful of cake just in front of his lips. His eyes trained on her pale face, Abel took the proffered bite and hardly noticed the flavor as he swallowed. Alex blushed a little under his insistent gaze and dropped her own to her plate, poking her cake with her fork. Abel leaned in and kissed her cheek. Alex grinned and nudged him with her elbow.
“Any good?”
“The cake’s okay, but I can think of something that tastes much better.” Alex choked on the bite she’d just shoved into her mouth in order to avoid conversation. After a little coughing and spluttering, she turned to look at him like he was crazy.
“Abel! We’re in public for crying out loud, and you’re still in your priest’s robes.”
“I wouldn’t object to going somewhere more private and getting rid of the robes.” Abel’s voice took on a more sensual tone and Alex shivered a little despite the warmth of the evening. Alex didn’t object verbally to Abel’s advances and he felt emboldened by her acceptance of his obvious flirtation. He leaned in again, his arm braced on the back of her chair. Alex cleared her throat and stood up, walking inside the shop.
“Time to clear the bill!” Alex’s voice was overly cheery to cover up her nervousness. He grinned to himself and waited until she approached the table again. “Ready to go?”
“Absolutely.” Abel stood and offered his arm and Alex accepted, though more hesitantly than before. They walked on this time in silence, Alex too afraid of receiving another suggestive response. Abel knew she was nervous, but could also sense some level of favorable reception in her demeanor. He hoped he wasn’t misreading her and he studied her body language, watching her from the corner of his eye until she relaxed. When they were a block away from the Vatican’s courtyard entrance, Abel pulled her down a dim alley way, pulling her close as he pressed his back against the wall. Alex’s eyes were wide and she glanced around them looking for attackers.
“Abel, what are you doing?” Her voice was a little frantic, expecting his explanation to involve rogue Methuselah.
“I’m taking time to look at the most beautiful girl in the world.” Alex’s face fell into a flat expression that seemed to say ‘that’s the corniest thing I’ve ever heard’.
“You scared me senseless!” She thumped his chest with her fist playfully and he chuckled, the sound rumbling through Alex, causing a familiar and undesirable reaction. She whimpered almost inaudibly, but it was loud enough for Abel to hear. “L- Let me go.” Her plea was weak.
“Why? This is a perfectly comfortable position. I’m not hurting you, am I?”
“Well... no, but...”
“But?”
“Abel, please...”
“Don’t say it Alex, not if you don’t mean it.” Alex mustered the courage to look up into his face, his eyes glittering hopefully in the relative darkness of the alley. Her eyes flitted to his lips and he took his chance, leaning forward to kiss her deeply. Her arms wrapped around his neck, almost of their own accord, and Abel, in turn, wrapped his arms around her trim waist. He held her tightly, as though he were afraid she was a dream, and deepened the kiss. Alex whimpered when he pressed his body more fully into hers and Abel took the opportunity to slide his tongue past her lips. Alex melted and Abel had to support her more fully as he caressed the contours of her warm mouth with his tongue. It had been so long since he’d kissed her like this, yet he could remember every curve, he could remember the softness of her skin under his fingertips. Alex felt her back pressed against the wall and pulled away from his lips to question the turn of events. Abel, however, would not be deterred and moved immediately to her throat, kissing the spot just below her ear. Abel knew this was a sensitive spot for her and it drove her to distraction; she completely forgot why she’d pulled away in the first place. When hands gripped her waist, his thumbs slipping under the edge of her corset, she was brought back to reality and she shoved him away, hard. He stood panting quietly, his glasses hanging on the end of his nose.
“We’re in the middle of an alley, Abel. Besides, we’re going to be late.” Alex tried to look away but Abel cupped her cheek in his palm, gently commanding her attention. Alex looked up into his eyes, noting the heated look he gave her.
“Forgive me, Alexandra. You make me forget everything else in the world.” He grinned and brushed the pad of his thumb over her lower lip. She closed her eyes and shuddered, willing the familiar desires he stoked to die away.
“Abel, stop. We’ve got to go.”
“Just one more kiss.”
“What?”
“Let me have one more kiss and then we can go.” Alex sighed and rolled her eyes.
“Really, is this nece--”
“Please? Just humor me.” Abel gave her the biggest eyes she’d seen since the children were very young and, sighing rather dramatically, she nodded. Abel leaned in, fulling intending to lock her in another searing kiss, but instead, Alex planted a loud smack on the tip of his nose and ducked out of his grasp. Stifling her giggle, Alex walked away, her gait quicker than normal. Abel stared at the empty space for a moment, a huge grin slowly spreading across his face. He turned and caught up to Alex quickly, the grin still in place as he offered his arm. Alex accepted and they walked onto the Vatican grounds, headed for their meeting with Hellsing.
I'm not sure I liked how this chapter turned out, but I wanted to give Alex a bit of an up. Life can't all be downs and besides I'm kinda aching to write a sex scene again >_< I'm trying to contain my inner slut, but she needs to be expressed! The angst is getting to me. So... let's pile on some more! ta da!
