Chapter 7

The group were still camped in the arid desert, gathered around the dying fire. It was very late and everyone was thinking about getting some sleep for the night.

“Well. I’m gonna hit the hay!” Trey yawned and his little Menuchin guardian ghost agreed, with a squeaky yawn.

“Cool, I’ll keep watch tonight guys.” Yoh volunteered. “I’ll do the first shift and I’m sure Amidamaru wouldn’t mind taking second?” His ghost’s deep voice reverberated against the canyon’s sides, “Of course, Master Yoh. I would be glad to.”
Yoh smiled, “Thanks, buddy.”

The group settled down into the red, crunchy sand and pulled their blankets over themselves. It seemed to be a recurring theme with Yoh nowadays. He would volunteer to keep watch at every chance he got.

Anna hunched down into her blanket and curled her long fingers around her hair, worriedly. She bit her lip. She knew that there was something up with Yoh. He loved his sleep, up until recently, he would have begged and pouted at the prospect of having to stay up half the night, and then probably the other half too out if pity for Amidamaru having to sit all on his own.

But he seemed fine about it; rather enthusiastic, even. It wasn’t right. She knew the others were agitated too, but how could they possibly confront Yoh about being helpful? It seemed ridiculous, even to herself. But still, she worried…

Yoh sat at the edge of their camp, silently thrilled that he had gotten away with another “watch”.

An hour passed and he watched the vast, inky night sky weigh down the world. His breath was white in the air and the desert cold prickled his skin in a delightful way. It would be such a loss when the sun came up and he would feel its harsh whip on his skin. Right now, the air was so still, like nothing else in the world was awake or conscious, except him. He had it all to himself, all these stars, not hiding from the city lights, just dancing, just playing. A private show, only for him.

The feeling of solitude and isolation ate him up and Yoh loved every bit of it. Because it meant that when he went to Zeke and shared his love, that abrupt connection yanking him back to that feeling so blissful that it moved him to tears, would contrast so perfectly. He would have lived a whole lifetime in a night.

Yoh felt Amidamaru glide over to him. He smiled softly. If a swish of air could be disapproving, this one certainly was.

“They are asleep.” Amidamaru whispered softly into his Master’s ear. He could feel the boy’s excitement, anticipation. It made Amidamaru slightly jealous; wasn’t he his Master’s best friend? The most important thing to him? ‘Not anymore,’ a traitorous part of him breathed.

“I do not think that you should go. This is your sixth meeting with him. The others will get suspicious! You are putting yourself and your friends in danger! He is the enemy of all mankind, you do not know his true agenda! Zeke is using you!”

Yoh tensed. He felt his good mood slip away like oil. All his own doubts…

“You do not know what you are talking about. Zeke and I are soul-mates. More than that, even. We are each other, and yet separate. That is wrong, a defiance of nature. I am just trying to be the way that the world intended me to be. I am just trying to get a little relief.” ‘I am just trying to love in peace.’

Amidamaru flinched. Yoh had told him of his pain. He did not want the boy to feel so, but… it just seemed so wrong. There were no shades of grey in a situation like this. Zeke was evil and meant harm to Yoh, therefore, Yoh must be protected from Zeke. It was as simple as that. But it was a pretty hard thing to do considering Yoh seemed to be on a delusional trip of self-destruction.

“Yoh!” Amidamaru whispered harshly into the night-time. But he was gone.

Yoh slinked away along the cliffs. His movements were tight and sharp. Zeke was not using him, Amidamaru was just a mother hen!

Yoh kicked an unfortunate rock over the edge in fury but then regretted it when the noise of it falling and bouncing off of the rocks echoed in the enclosed valley and grew in volume. Damn. That was stupid. He wondered if it had woken anyone in the camp, he was not that far from them. Shit. Should he go back? Pretend to anyone that had awoken that he had thought that he had heard something and went to check it out. ‘Yeah. Right. Without your guardian ghost…’ Yoh frowned.

“Ah, love! What troubles you? I do not like seeing such an expression upon your features.” Yoh jumped slightly when he heard his brother’s caramel voice sliding into his ear.

Zeke saw the young one’s features soften at the sound of his voice, even as he jumped in surprise. Such knowledge made his stomach clench with nervous butterflies. Should he try to touch him this time? Would Yoh want him to?
