Chapter Seven
Choices: A Death Note Fan fiction
By Aurora Moon
I only have my spell check and my Grammar check to depend on in terms of looking for errors, but even then that's not perfect at all... so if you see some weird stuff, then sorry!
Anyway, on with the story!
==============================================================
L, or Ryuuzaki as he was known to his new police team, knew that he’d be in for plenty of surprises and challenges the moment he choose to work on this Kira case.
But what he didn’t expect was the fact that one single person had thrown him for an loop completely.
And he wasn’t sure if this young man was Kira! He had never been so unsure about anything in his whole life.
This young man’s name was Light Yagami, and had first caught his attention by catching the FBI man he had deployed in the act of tailing the young man. It wasn’t the act of catching the FBI in the process of following the young man that had caught his attention, but rather how the young man had reacted to that.
The young man seemed to have some inside information that nobody else seemed to have, and seemed a little too composed and calm for somebody who had found out that he was being followed by the FBI.
On top of it, Light Yagami had sent on an message VIA Raye Penber, practically taunting him and challenging him to do something better than getting the FBI to follow him around.
So naturally he just HAD to bug and put cameras all over the Yagami household. The majority of the cameras were in Light’s bedroom, though, because L wanted to see what he would do next and to see if he had anything to do with Kira.
He couldn’t help but note that Light was unusually observant of everything to the point of paranoia. because the moment he stepped into his bedroom he seemed to know there was something wrong about his room, even though L had specified that everything be put back the way they were before. He had searched his room with an urgency, as if he was looking for anything that had gone missing… and then he had found one of the cameras.
Panicked, he had called his father, who happened to be on the same investigation team that L had allowed to work with him.
L had been disappointed to find that Soichiro Yagami didn’t have a good poker face when it came to his own son, and as an result his son was able to read him too easily. He had even gotten Soichiro to admit openly that L and the rest of the team was watching them right now, when L had clearly told him not to admit nor to tell him anything under any cimsustemce at all.
So much for professionalism.
However he had been shocked when in Soichiro’s home office Light explained how he seemed to know things so much, and started off by profiling HIM down to his little habits, as if Light had knew him before…
Apparently this young man had not only made it an habit to study Kira, but L too as well. As an result of studying the cases L had been known to work on, he had managed to accurately describe his habits, his work patterns and even his personality.
L couldn’t help but find THAT to be dangerous for his health as well as threatening his anonymity that he so valued. After all if somebody like this college student was able to observe his work patterns, etc… then this was the type of man who could easily guess where he would go, what he’d do. That sort of excellent guesswork would easily unravel who he was to the whole world! Even if this man had no intention of going after L; there was others out there who would be all too willing to use this man’s deadly intellect to their own ends as an weapon against L.
This person was definitely somebody he’d have to keep close tabs on.
So as he passed the week watching the Yagami household, he watched for any suspicious activity while at the same time formulating some sort of plan on how to keep this young man constantly under his watch.
In the end, he decided that the only way he could keep an close eye on this young man and work the Kira case at the same time was if he got him to “work ” on the case.
Using the “we could use the help ” excuse wouldn’t be too farfetched–apparently Light had helped out his father on many unsolved cases, and were even publicly credited for doing so. L hated to say it, but looking into Light’s profile… his I. Q. and everything about him was pretty amazing. He had an intellect that was on the same level as L’s– certainly not very commonplace.
So, having somebody like him help him out wouldn’t hinder the case too much…
But the problem was… If there was any chance that Light Yagami was Kira or even helping out Kira, that would mean that he’d put the whole investigation team in danger as well as himself.
In the end, he decided to take an gamble at the end of the week. He enrolled into the same university Light went to, under the name of an Japanese movie star named Ryuga Hideki.
It was the strangest thing though, now that he thought back on the memory of meeting Light in person for the first time.
As he had stared at the back of the young man’s head, he had the strangest sense of Deja vu …. But he simply ignored that. After all, the phenomenon of Deja vu was easily explained. It was when your mind was actually processing events as they occurred at the moment a little bit slower than your eyes and your other senses took them in. And then it would register that as past memory although it was actually happening exactly right now.
However, to his dismay as he learned more about what this Light Yagami was like over the days that he spent with the college student, the strange sense of familiarity continued to pester him.
Every time he took the time to chat and or debate with this man, he couldn’t help but feel like he was speaking to somebody that he had known for such a long time. Like this was some old friend he had rediscovered… and as an result he caught himself almost relaxing in front of the man.
But that was completely ridiculous! There was just no way he could had known this man before… And he hated the fact that he was so comfortable around a total stranger like this. It paradoxically made something inside him become even more wary of the so-called “innocent ” young man.
really, it could had been just Light’s natural charm at work… and it would basically make sense, considering how popular he was amongst the classmates. He certainly had noticed how people seemed to flock to him, as if Light was some sort of male siren who bewitched those who were unfortunate enough to hear his song.
Maybe those people at the university felt the same thing he did every time they talked to the man… like he was some old friend they hadn’t seen in such a long time, or even had been somebody they grew up with, even though he actually weren’t any of those things.
Oh yes… that sort of thing was certainly dangerous to somebody like him. He would have to watch out for that…
And he strongly suspected that Light Yagami was just as wary of him. Although he had to wonder why the college man would feel the need to be suspicious of him in the first place.
Oh yes, the chances of Light being Kira rose by 10%.
At the entrance ceremony he decided to put his plan into motion, by telling the college student that he was L.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
The moment at the hospital changed the game way too much, in L’s opinion.
Once Light had discovered who he really was all along, Light dropped his guard and opened up completely to him without reservation.
After Light’s little confession about why he really wanted to join the team, and how he really had that heart attack…
Well, L didn’t just know what to think anymore.
Now, L would of course suspect Light of faking that as some sort of act to get closer to him… but the problem was, it didn’t seem or feel fake at all. This time, Light had actually been 100% honest with him, far as he could tell.
And he had made sure to check Light’s story, by looking up the name of the criminal that Light had mentioned. He then had people he trusted question Botan’s friends and the people at the Bar. Well… more or less, those people only seemed to verify Light’s story. Those people certainly had overheard Light yelling at the now dead man that he wished that Botan would just drop dead, that he go to hell, etc. And his friends had admitted that Botan had confessed to raping that schoolgirl, as well as the fact that they certainly had followed light.
There was only a slight variation in their story as compared to Light’s…they had claimed that Light had opened an notebook that came out of nowhere, and wrote something in it. They then asked what the hell he was doing, and he said that he was just writing an message to his family in case he was to die here. L found this part rather interesting, as seeing Light had failed to mention this part. But then again, Light did say that his memory of the events were rather spotty thanks to the stress and his heart attack. But what if that was just an cover for something that Light didn’t want to talk about?
However, they did say that Light did seem equally shocked as they were when Botan died of an heart attack. When they had been trying to help their friend, Light had bolted on them and they didn’t see which way he had gone.
So more or less, Light had been 100% honest with him after all.
That certainly didn’t seem like something Kira would do. And if Light wasn’t Kira… then who was?
But at least whoever was behind this, there was a possibility that he/she was just as interested in Light as L was. Which meant that Light could still quite possibly be the key to it all.

–A week later–
Matsuda came running into office with an frantic expression on his face. He then gasped out between intakes of deep breaths, as he skidded to an stop in an almost comical fashion.
“ Turn… it… to … Sakura TV now!! There’s something from Kira on there! ” He managed gasp out the sentence, as he finally caught his breath.
So they turned it to that channel, and sure enough, There was Gothic letters which spelled out “ KIRA ” pasted on the giant TV screen.
An electronic simulated voice almost similar to L’s masked electronic voice, boomed out of the TV’s speakers.
“ I am but the humble right hand of the true God Kira. Now, if this tape is running on TV right now that means that the TV station has decided to comply with my demands in order to keep their lives. A most wise decision. Now, I could try to prove that I’m really what I claim to be by killing a few people on public TV who had publicly opposed the ideals of Kira. But…I’m not so shallow enough to kill off people who had done nothing wrong expect voice their opinions. I will however warn you… that anybody who tries to stop this broadcast as soon as it starts, will be killed. Feel free to try, but don’t be surprised if it’s the last thing you do… ”
“ What the heck is this crap? Looks like we got freaks coming out of the woodwork thanks to Kira…just fucking great! The last thing we need is some lame copycats trying to pass themselves off as Kira… ” Shuichi Aizawa groaned at the TV.
Kanzo Mogi and the others just nodded in agreement.
The broadcast continued.
“That warning said and done, it’s time for me to move on with why I’m making this broadcast in the first place. I want to address the one who’s been killing the innocents and many other random people using the power given to us by the shinigami. You know who you are! ”
There was a thudding noise, and everyone turned to see L sitting on the floor with an stunned expression on his face. Apparently he had fallen off his chair in shock at the mere mention of the word “Shinigami ” and everyone in the room had missed it.
“Shinigami….? He’s talking about them like they’re real… ” L mumbled, still slightly shocked at the possibility that Shinigami could even be real.
“ It’s probably just some kind of code word that Kira would understand… ” Aizawa said, rational as usual.
“Damn it, we should stop this broadcast now! Otherwise we’re just giving those creeps what they want–attention! We can’t let this slide by, right? ” Ukita asked.
The broadcast was still going on, with the mysterious person ranting now.
“We were given this gift to punish the unjust and the wicked. We were supposed to use this power to protect the innocents from the criminals out there as the true and original Kira wanted us to. not so that we could kill off people who had done no wrong! Now, I’m sure you could had become confused and led astray by the renegende shinigami who fell from grace and are now working against True God Kira’s noble plan for this world. You could had became deceived by those same fallen shinigami, so I’m simply informing you now… if you feel in your own heart that any Shinigami at your side has been lying to you for their own purposes… do not listen to them! ”
Suddenly the TV paused the broadcast to show videotapes from outside of Sakura TV’s building, where policemen were dying!
Apparently some people on the police force had felt that the broadcast was an disturbance of the peace, so they had gone to stop it… but soon as they touched the doors they dropped dead in front of the station!
Then the video of the dying policemen shrunk into a smaller video box on the channel as the Kira Broadcast continued.
“I’m telling you all this in the hopes that you will repent for having killed the innocents, by joining forces with me. Together, we could make sure no evil can threaten the innocent and pure people of this world. I know that some of you might think that you are the true god Kira… but you are not! At this moment, The true God Kira has been reborn as an human again, and is unaware of his destiny to change the world. But as the chosen ones who were given the gift of the Shinigami, it is our duty to help him awaken! For when he awakens, The true god shall purge the entire earth of any existing evil people left. All those criminals’ deaths so far shall be nothing in comparison then!”
“What the fuck? ” Aizawa just stared at the TV screen in disbelief.
“ He’s completely nuts! ” Matsuda commented, and everyone on the team save for L all nodded in agreement.
“ Hmm. ” L had gotten back into his chair, and were now just gnawing on his thumbs as he was lost in thought. Finally he spoke. “Imagine for one moment… what if everything this person said was true? That’d be very interesting, wouldn’t you say? ”
Matsuda shuddered. “That’d be scary, to be honest. If such a ‘mortal god’ existed… then it’d basically mean he would cause the end of humanity, wouldn’t it?? After all, there’s no such thing as an pure person… everyone’s done things they shouldn’t had… some worse than others, granted but still…”
L nodded solemnly. “Yes. But for now, I’m concerned with the fact that those policemen and other people out in front of the TV station died so quickly without their names even being shown. Does this mean this person doesn’t need names to go along with their faces unlike the current Kira? ”
The TV droned on. “ So if you agree that such a thing is wonderful, then I’m sure we could make very good allies. Therefore, we need to meet up somewhere. I’ve made an list that I’m sure only you chosen ones would understand. Somebody at the station will read the note for everyone out there once this is done broadcasting.
If you don’t want to meet up, that’s okay as well. But know this… I’ve got the eyes. Sooner or later, I’ll be able to find each one of you out there. By then… I hope you will consider my words and also think about the wisdom of siding with the True God Kira instead of the False Kira. ”
Suddenly, on TV they showed an van crashing into the building! Out of the van came an lone gunman with an helmet on so that nobody was able to ID him on TV. He ran into the building out of sight.
Everyone wondered who could do such a thing, as they became glued to the TV once again.
Suddenly, L’s phone rang. He gingerly opened it up with one finger, and then pressed the button. “Yes? ”
Light Yagami’s anxious voice came on from the other end. “ Has my father contacted you yet? He was supposed to take it easy at home here, but when we watched that Kira broadcast he became upset and ran out of the house! He even took our family van out of the garage instead of the company car… that’s not something he normally does. Oh shit, That’s our van on TV right now… ”
L couldn’t help but wonder how Light managed to get this number, and even voiced this. To the others in the room, he told them that it was Soichiro who had crashed into the building, and apparently was going to stop the broadcast from the look of things.
Ukita nodded. “ Good for him! Man, Chief’s got some guts doing that… ”
“ Never mind how I got your number ” An irate sounding Light answered on the other end of the cellphone. “I think it’s obvious that if I can hack into computers, I can hack into my own father’s cellphone to get your number. Anyway… The real issue is my father! He’s not taking two days of rest before working like he’s supposed to… When he contacts you and I know he will, just tell him that right now his family is very angry with him, okay? I’m especially angry at how he did such a dangerous reckless thing with the van… he could had died! I don’t think he should be pushing himself so hard like that, and I’m sure you agree right?”
L couldn’t help but mentally smile at how worried the young man was about his father. It was very obvious that the man cared that much for his father, and also the rest of his own family. His suspicion of Light lowered already all the way down to 0.2%.
To him, Kira was somebody who only cared about himself and nobody else. Sure, He could share some family affections and even have some feelings, but when it came to his own safety, he would sacrifice his own family to suit his own needs if necessary. So he certainly wouldn’t feel such concern for family members like this…
L just spoke in his usual monotone way. “ And why should I be the one to pass on the message? Can’t you tell him this yourself? ”
Light just sighed, sounding very frustrated. “Well, my father isn’t answering my calls. That’s why! Just let me know if he’s okay when you find out, okay? Please?”
Well, that “ please ” made L rise his eyebrows. Kira certainly wouldn’t beg like that.
L made an “hmm” noise, and then answered Light. “Alright. I’ll let you know as soon as I find out anything. ”
Light took a deep breath. “ Thank you. Alright, see you soon then. ”
With that the call was terminated.
However, as soon as that call was over, L’s cellphone rang once again.
L couldn’t help but sigh in annoyance. Man, he really hated those things. It better not be Light again…
“ Yes, this is L. ” L answered the cellphone again.
This time it was Soichiro Yagami.
“ I’ve broken into the TV station and confiscated everything that was sent to them from that person. I’ll need some help transporting the tapes and the other things back to headquarters. But the others on the team better bring helmets that hides their faces… I suspect strongly that whoever killed those policemen don’t need our names at all to go with our faces.” The chief said.
“ I see. You did a very good thing indeed. ” L praised the older man. He then paused slightly, before adding, “ although I don’t think your son is quite as happy as I am about that. He called me here just a few seconds ago… he was rather upset that you were putting yourself in such danger when you were supposed to be at home resting. ”
L could just easily imagine the sheepish expression on Soichiro’s face as the older man answered: “ Ah….well…he’ll get over it I suspect. After all, he understands how much this case means to me. ”
L smiled. “ indeed. ”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
–Two days later–
After L and the team had gone over the tapes, they all started thinking about how to use this information, and whenever it could mean anything.
Today was the day that he officially welcomed Light into the team.
“ Thank you for coming here. ” L said, as he shook hands with Light.
Light shook his head as he smiled. “ No need to thank me. After all, I do share your wish to catch Kira, Ryuga. ”
L simply nodded at that. “Alright. But while you’re here please call me Ryuuzaki.”
Light looked vaguely puzzled as the other teammates introduced themselves by their code names, even though he had already met them all before.
However he caught on, and then he smiled. “ So, that would make me Asahi Light? ”, referring to his father’s code name.
“ If you want. However I’ll be simply calling you ‘Light-kun’ during your stay here. ” L replied. “ Now, let us go over the videotapes and the other things that we recovered from Sakura TV, shall we? ”
Light agreed with that, so they sat down to go over everything, inducing watching the tape.
Once he had gone over everything, Light was silent for a second or two.
“So, what do you think light-kun? ” L wondered.
Light sighed. “I have to admit, I’m shocked. Remember when I spoke to you about the possibility of there being different Kiras out there? ”
L nodded at this.
Light then continued after seeing L nod at him. “I always assumed that it would be one leader and one follower switching shifts and doing their mysterious method together. I never imagined that there might be more than two killers out there with the same power… much less that some of those killers might have different ideas on how to use this method of theirs… and even working separately from the others! ”
“ But why would you assume that it would be one leader and one follower? I know you told me again but I think you should refresh my memory and also so that others here can hear your previous theory. ” L asked.
“ Well, I was studying the time patterns… the hours the criminals died at, that sort of thing. In the start the pattern was pretty random, almost like this person had an very busy life and didn’t have much time to himself. I believe I told you that part. Then as time progressed, the time of the deaths started becoming more non-random… there was literally 20-30 criminals dying every hour or so. This made me think that maybe there was a new person who had came into the scene, and were helping out the another person by taking nightly shifts or whatever. ”
The rest of the teammates seemed surprised by this. This was all news to them…L hadn’t told them about Light’s theory before it seems.
L chewed on his thumb as he thought about this. He then spoke. “ Of course this new information about the Kiras opposing each other slightly destroys that theory. Now it seems that there could be more than two out there, and each one of them could have their own patterns to go by. And since all of them use the same method, it gets harder to tell which is which… or even how many of them there is, since how their patterns here could overlap with each other and make it seem seamless, as if it was all done by one person instead. This of course, makes it harder to even find one of them… ”
Silence filled the room as every teammate started to feel slightly hopeless about the situation.
Light then started chuckling, drawing odd looks from the others. He then spoke. “This doesn’t mean the whole thing is hopeless though! It could be quite possible that one of those Kiras completely opposes what the others are doing… if we happen to find one that would willingly help us, then we could easily wrap up this case once we find out how they’ve been doing it. ”
L smiled. “ Yes…. That is quite possible. Once we find the key, all the doors are bound to open for us. ”
Cheered up by this, everyone moved on with the next order of business.
“ It’s totally obvious that we have to make a fake Kira tape responding to this one. Since we cut the broadcast off before they could read the note which spoke about the different dozen locations out there…the other Kiras have no way of knowing how to meet up. Which means, with this faked response of ours, we could suggest an location of our own that we could easily supervise and therefore be able to control any situations that might arise. ” Mogi replied.
L smiled at this. “A excellent suggestion. In fact I was about to suggest the same thing myself… and I suspect everyone else was thinking along the same lines? ” He looked around at the members who answered the question with nods.
“Then we’re all in agreement on our new plan then. The only question, who in this team can play a convincing Kira? I think we each will have to write an response which we think Kira wouldn’t be suspicious of, and see which one is the best. The one who writes the best and the most convincing response shall play the role of Kira. Otherwise, I don’t see this plan getting very far at all.” L spoke.
With that, the minutes passed into a full hour, as every team drafted their own responses… and the fact that everyone seemed to take a while was because they all had to think about it. Serval papers were already crumbled up and thrown into the trash can because a few felt that some of their attempts was way too obvious.
In the end, everyone passed around their own papers and read over the others’. and in the end, Light won. Matsuda was last on the list of people who could make an convincing Kira. Even though it wasn’t actually an competition to start with.
L wasn’t amused though, with some certain parts. “ Light-kun, how could you be so cruel towards me? Here it says: ‘so in short… I do agree with what you’re saying completely. However, I think you were foolish to have aired such details in public, especially with this L around. I don’t think I’d be completely comfortable meeting you in public until he was dead. In fact you should demand that the police comes to our side and for L to show himself on TV.’ Don’t you think you’re taking this Kira thing too far?”
Light just looked mildly amused, as his innocent-looking brown eyes looked back at L. “Oh, don’t take it personally. I just simply thought that would be how one of the Kiras might respond…After all, theorically… if I was one of the Kira people… I know I would surely see you as an threat. After all… you’re a very powerful man and you’re also very capable…regardless of how you look. Besides, wouldn’t it be an total insult if the Kiras didn’t see you as an threat at all, to the point that they would discuss such things so openly without worrying about you?”
L had to admit that Light was somewhat right about that. A part of him would definitely become insulted if any one of the Kiras didn’t consider him an threat. After all…He wasn’t just any man. He wasn’t just any detective. He was the LAW. He was JUSTICE.
He certainly wasn’t to be taken so lightly, that was for sure. He knew that would sound like he had an massive ego to others if he voiced this. That was the thing though… he didn’t care if anybody thought this of him. He never said he was an humble man anyway…
L smirked, as he moved closer towards the other man. He was practically straddling the now surprised young man’s legs, with his faces just inches apart away from the other’s face. He gazed into those now wide almond-colored eyes, and purred: “I see. So Light-kun considers me dangerous ? ”
The look on Light’s face was classic. His eyes were so big now, his mouth was opening and closing like he wanted to speak but no sound was coming out. And he was actually starting to blush!
L couldn’t help but stare at him in wonder. For some reason, he didn’t think somebody so self-composed as Light-kun would be so off guard to blush like that. And the weird thing was, L liked seeing Light blush like that…
But why would Light blush like this?
He heard an loud cough behind him, and he turned around to see Soichiro Yagami looking at him with an strange expression… his eyebrows raised high.
Behind him, the rest of the team were just staring with disturbed/morbidly fasciated expressions at L and Light.
“ Just…what do you think you’re doing on top of my son like that? ” Soichiro yagami asked, pointing out how suggestive L’s current position looked right now.
“ I’m just joking with your son. After all, he’s the one who first made the comment about me being dangerous if he was Kira…so I took the instance of an interrogator with an suspect, even though I wasn’t too serious about it. Light-kun surely thinks this is funny too as well, right?” L explained as if this was the most obvious thing in the world, his wide eyes blinking innocently.
Light laughed easily, now that he had gotten some of his usual composure back. “ I have to say, you’ve got an real unusual sense of humor, Ryuuzaki. But can you get off me? My legs are starting to get tired.. ”
“ Very well, Light-kun. ” with that L returned to his seat and started eating some cake as if nothing happened at all.
Some of the men on the team looked like they wanted to comment, but they wisely shut their mouths. After all, it was just only a joke.. It was nothing important that they would keep on discussing this, so they just went back to work.
______________________________________________________
The mysterious man laughed as he watched this second kira’s broadcast on his DVD player, which he had set to record his TVs shows while he had been busy.
“ How excellent. Another person with a sense of drama! But…. He seems a little off in his head…I wonder if he actually believes all the crap he’s saying on TV. ” He spoke to himself, as he turned on his light. “Oh well, I suppose that’s just more inspiration for my books… ”
Now that the lights were on, the man’s features could be seen clearly.
He had long dyed red hair, which stopped just below the shoulders. His fashion was that of the latest from the fashion magazines… in fact to many he looked just exactly like an very handsome celebrity.
Which wasn’t too far from the truth, actually.
He was a well-known writer of horror books, and also directed horror movies. His movies were well-known all over the globe for their disturbing content, the gore, and how well it played upon the mortal fear of death.
He was practically worshiped like an god by fans of his work.
Recently, some of his books even got converted into an TV series which propelled him even more into the spotlight, gaining him even more fans.
He chuckled, remembering his first book he wrote. It was an book which talked about Shinigami and how they stayed alive by taking away the lifespans of humans. However, in his book the Shinigami didn’t take the lives of humans by using notebooks.
His book had actually been based on his old diary from when he was an kid. The funny thing was, until he had gained back ownership of a Death note, he used to think that his old diary entries had been nothing but his overactive imagination. After all, Kids were prone to such things, right?
When he forgot after he lost the death note… and then read his own diary about the Shinigami years later as an adult, he thought the idea of an Shinigami using something so mundane as an regular-looking notebook to kill was too farfetched. However, he did like the idea of Shinigami preying on humans. After all, Shinigami were supposed to be mysterious and scary!
So he took that “ idea ” and changed the notebook part. Instead of Notebooks, the Shinigami used those cursed pens made out of their own bones, and their own blood as the ink as the driving force behind their powers. They could write on anything, even regular human notebooks if they wanted. but they did carry around large books on their backs that was encased in human bones for when they found nothing else that they could write on.
He thought that would make them seem more scary in his book, and it worked. It was what made him famous, after all.
But now that he was an death note owner again… he remembered everything clearly now.
And now this other person on TV was babbling about how Shinigami could lie and stuff. He couldn’t help but chuckle at that.
That was the strangest part for him in all this so far. One of those Death Notes had simply dropped out of the blue one day, and nobody but him had noticed. As soon as he picked it up, he couldn’t help but remember everything…
And he had expected that the Shinigami he had made friends with as an kid to come back to him. But no Shinigami had appeared for him at this time. So there was nobody at his side who would ever deceive him of anything.
He had felt a strange sense of isolation at this, but now he no longer felt this way, now that he knew there was others like him out there.
He wondered if he should make the effort to go and find this other person who had rambled nonsensically on TV. There was the chance that the other person would kill him once she/he found out who he was… and even when they found out his true nature.
He didn’t really care about this at all…. Being killed, that was. He had died before, and gone to Mu if not only for a few seconds. He had managed to come back from the dead… and the experience had changed him. Even though it had been only for a few seconds in the world of the living, he had experienced eternity in that place.
So over the 7 years as he grew up, he had experimented with all the different ways he could use the death note. He wrote in his diary all about it, in minute detail. Also when he could he even filmed the reactions and the deaths of the humans he had killed, so that he could watch them die all over again when he felt like it. He had of course, hidden his tapes away where not even his own family could find them.
There was even times when he delighted in making them die in the most gruesome ways, taking special care to place video cameras all over the area, so that he could capture every detail from all angles. Then writing it all down, describing it in poetry form.
Why? Just because he could. Plus, his time in Mu had made him realize many things about not just himself, but about humanity in general. He had realized that his life had been empty, meaningless… just like every human on the planet.
All that crap about Good and evil? That was nothing but illusions, and Humans were just nothing but a type of animal that specialized in over-rationalizing the things they did, and even placed too much meaning on their own lives.
Be studious and be on your best behavior. But Why?
So you can have the best jobs. But Why?
So you can earn more money. But Why?
To lead an rich, shallow life based on material things that you can’t even have forever. And even if it was to support your family, etc… not even family were forever. They too could easily go away in a blink, so to speak. Nothing lasted forever, and even after a while became meaningless.
Hell, there was very few things that you could even take with you after you had died. Your soul was one thing… your memory was another thing you could take into the afterlife. But from what he heard, not even memory lasted very long, especially if the reincarnation theory was true. When you were reincarnated, only fragments of your last life lingered.
And even then, the soul’s personality would change and twist slowly with each life, if the whole reincarnation thing was true… so you could be an evil man in one life and then be actually an good man in the next life, depending on what you choose to be. There no such thing as an evil soul or even an good soul.
So really, it was just all about choices… the rest was meaningless, even religion.
After all, why follow certain religions and then try your best to be a good person? What if all of it was completely wrong? What if Mu (nothingness) was all there was for us, like he had experienced?
Then whenever you were an mass murderer or even an saint didn’t matter at all. For both the saint and the mass murderer, they went to the same place.
So that was why he choose to enjoy his life to the fullest, even when he was killing people… even without an death note.
He got the feeling that the other person out there wouldn’t really exactly approve of his viewpoint; the other death note user seemed to be the religious fanatic sort. So he’d have to keep that aspect of his life hidden from the others.
He then decided right there that he wouldn’t really go to this other person… he was famous enough in the media for somebody out there like this person to notice him. So in the end he got the feeling that others would come to him instead.
He would bid his time, and he was sure that everything would then unfold before his eyes.
He smiled, at the thought that he would finally have some fresh material for his books. Killing people and recording their deaths was a good source of inspiration, but even that was getting old.
A whole Chapter on L, and what’s this? We get another insight into the life of our mysterious Kira?!
Have anybody guessed who this is yet? LOL I had him change his appearance so that he wouldn’t really be too recognizable at all.
Review as always, Lords and Ladies! ~^_^~
By Aurora Moon
I only have my spell check and my Grammar check to depend on in terms of looking for errors, but even then that's not perfect at all... so if you see some weird stuff, then sorry!
Anyway, on with the story!
==============================================================
L, or Ryuuzaki as he was known to his new police team, knew that he’d be in for plenty of surprises and challenges the moment he choose to work on this Kira case.
But what he didn’t expect was the fact that one single person had thrown him for an loop completely.
And he wasn’t sure if this young man was Kira! He had never been so unsure about anything in his whole life.
This young man’s name was Light Yagami, and had first caught his attention by catching the FBI man he had deployed in the act of tailing the young man. It wasn’t the act of catching the FBI in the process of following the young man that had caught his attention, but rather how the young man had reacted to that.
The young man seemed to have some inside information that nobody else seemed to have, and seemed a little too composed and calm for somebody who had found out that he was being followed by the FBI.
On top of it, Light Yagami had sent on an message VIA Raye Penber, practically taunting him and challenging him to do something better than getting the FBI to follow him around.
So naturally he just HAD to bug and put cameras all over the Yagami household. The majority of the cameras were in Light’s bedroom, though, because L wanted to see what he would do next and to see if he had anything to do with Kira.
He couldn’t help but note that Light was unusually observant of everything to the point of paranoia. because the moment he stepped into his bedroom he seemed to know there was something wrong about his room, even though L had specified that everything be put back the way they were before. He had searched his room with an urgency, as if he was looking for anything that had gone missing… and then he had found one of the cameras.
Panicked, he had called his father, who happened to be on the same investigation team that L had allowed to work with him.
L had been disappointed to find that Soichiro Yagami didn’t have a good poker face when it came to his own son, and as an result his son was able to read him too easily. He had even gotten Soichiro to admit openly that L and the rest of the team was watching them right now, when L had clearly told him not to admit nor to tell him anything under any cimsustemce at all.
So much for professionalism.
However he had been shocked when in Soichiro’s home office Light explained how he seemed to know things so much, and started off by profiling HIM down to his little habits, as if Light had knew him before…
Apparently this young man had not only made it an habit to study Kira, but L too as well. As an result of studying the cases L had been known to work on, he had managed to accurately describe his habits, his work patterns and even his personality.
L couldn’t help but find THAT to be dangerous for his health as well as threatening his anonymity that he so valued. After all if somebody like this college student was able to observe his work patterns, etc… then this was the type of man who could easily guess where he would go, what he’d do. That sort of excellent guesswork would easily unravel who he was to the whole world! Even if this man had no intention of going after L; there was others out there who would be all too willing to use this man’s deadly intellect to their own ends as an weapon against L.
This person was definitely somebody he’d have to keep close tabs on.
So as he passed the week watching the Yagami household, he watched for any suspicious activity while at the same time formulating some sort of plan on how to keep this young man constantly under his watch.
In the end, he decided that the only way he could keep an close eye on this young man and work the Kira case at the same time was if he got him to “work ” on the case.
Using the “we could use the help ” excuse wouldn’t be too farfetched–apparently Light had helped out his father on many unsolved cases, and were even publicly credited for doing so. L hated to say it, but looking into Light’s profile… his I. Q. and everything about him was pretty amazing. He had an intellect that was on the same level as L’s– certainly not very commonplace.
So, having somebody like him help him out wouldn’t hinder the case too much…
But the problem was… If there was any chance that Light Yagami was Kira or even helping out Kira, that would mean that he’d put the whole investigation team in danger as well as himself.
In the end, he decided to take an gamble at the end of the week. He enrolled into the same university Light went to, under the name of an Japanese movie star named Ryuga Hideki.
It was the strangest thing though, now that he thought back on the memory of meeting Light in person for the first time.
As he had stared at the back of the young man’s head, he had the strangest sense of Deja vu …. But he simply ignored that. After all, the phenomenon of Deja vu was easily explained. It was when your mind was actually processing events as they occurred at the moment a little bit slower than your eyes and your other senses took them in. And then it would register that as past memory although it was actually happening exactly right now.
However, to his dismay as he learned more about what this Light Yagami was like over the days that he spent with the college student, the strange sense of familiarity continued to pester him.
Every time he took the time to chat and or debate with this man, he couldn’t help but feel like he was speaking to somebody that he had known for such a long time. Like this was some old friend he had rediscovered… and as an result he caught himself almost relaxing in front of the man.
But that was completely ridiculous! There was just no way he could had known this man before… And he hated the fact that he was so comfortable around a total stranger like this. It paradoxically made something inside him become even more wary of the so-called “innocent ” young man.
really, it could had been just Light’s natural charm at work… and it would basically make sense, considering how popular he was amongst the classmates. He certainly had noticed how people seemed to flock to him, as if Light was some sort of male siren who bewitched those who were unfortunate enough to hear his song.
Maybe those people at the university felt the same thing he did every time they talked to the man… like he was some old friend they hadn’t seen in such a long time, or even had been somebody they grew up with, even though he actually weren’t any of those things.
Oh yes… that sort of thing was certainly dangerous to somebody like him. He would have to watch out for that…
And he strongly suspected that Light Yagami was just as wary of him. Although he had to wonder why the college man would feel the need to be suspicious of him in the first place.
Oh yes, the chances of Light being Kira rose by 10%.
At the entrance ceremony he decided to put his plan into motion, by telling the college student that he was L.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
The moment at the hospital changed the game way too much, in L’s opinion.
Once Light had discovered who he really was all along, Light dropped his guard and opened up completely to him without reservation.
After Light’s little confession about why he really wanted to join the team, and how he really had that heart attack…
Well, L didn’t just know what to think anymore.
Now, L would of course suspect Light of faking that as some sort of act to get closer to him… but the problem was, it didn’t seem or feel fake at all. This time, Light had actually been 100% honest with him, far as he could tell.
And he had made sure to check Light’s story, by looking up the name of the criminal that Light had mentioned. He then had people he trusted question Botan’s friends and the people at the Bar. Well… more or less, those people only seemed to verify Light’s story. Those people certainly had overheard Light yelling at the now dead man that he wished that Botan would just drop dead, that he go to hell, etc. And his friends had admitted that Botan had confessed to raping that schoolgirl, as well as the fact that they certainly had followed light.
There was only a slight variation in their story as compared to Light’s…they had claimed that Light had opened an notebook that came out of nowhere, and wrote something in it. They then asked what the hell he was doing, and he said that he was just writing an message to his family in case he was to die here. L found this part rather interesting, as seeing Light had failed to mention this part. But then again, Light did say that his memory of the events were rather spotty thanks to the stress and his heart attack. But what if that was just an cover for something that Light didn’t want to talk about?
However, they did say that Light did seem equally shocked as they were when Botan died of an heart attack. When they had been trying to help their friend, Light had bolted on them and they didn’t see which way he had gone.
So more or less, Light had been 100% honest with him after all.
That certainly didn’t seem like something Kira would do. And if Light wasn’t Kira… then who was?
But at least whoever was behind this, there was a possibility that he/she was just as interested in Light as L was. Which meant that Light could still quite possibly be the key to it all.
–A week later–
Matsuda came running into office with an frantic expression on his face. He then gasped out between intakes of deep breaths, as he skidded to an stop in an almost comical fashion.
“ Turn… it… to … Sakura TV now!! There’s something from Kira on there! ” He managed gasp out the sentence, as he finally caught his breath.
So they turned it to that channel, and sure enough, There was Gothic letters which spelled out “ KIRA ” pasted on the giant TV screen.
An electronic simulated voice almost similar to L’s masked electronic voice, boomed out of the TV’s speakers.
“ I am but the humble right hand of the true God Kira. Now, if this tape is running on TV right now that means that the TV station has decided to comply with my demands in order to keep their lives. A most wise decision. Now, I could try to prove that I’m really what I claim to be by killing a few people on public TV who had publicly opposed the ideals of Kira. But…I’m not so shallow enough to kill off people who had done nothing wrong expect voice their opinions. I will however warn you… that anybody who tries to stop this broadcast as soon as it starts, will be killed. Feel free to try, but don’t be surprised if it’s the last thing you do… ”
“ What the heck is this crap? Looks like we got freaks coming out of the woodwork thanks to Kira…just fucking great! The last thing we need is some lame copycats trying to pass themselves off as Kira… ” Shuichi Aizawa groaned at the TV.
Kanzo Mogi and the others just nodded in agreement.
The broadcast continued.
“That warning said and done, it’s time for me to move on with why I’m making this broadcast in the first place. I want to address the one who’s been killing the innocents and many other random people using the power given to us by the shinigami. You know who you are! ”
There was a thudding noise, and everyone turned to see L sitting on the floor with an stunned expression on his face. Apparently he had fallen off his chair in shock at the mere mention of the word “Shinigami ” and everyone in the room had missed it.
“Shinigami….? He’s talking about them like they’re real… ” L mumbled, still slightly shocked at the possibility that Shinigami could even be real.
“ It’s probably just some kind of code word that Kira would understand… ” Aizawa said, rational as usual.
“Damn it, we should stop this broadcast now! Otherwise we’re just giving those creeps what they want–attention! We can’t let this slide by, right? ” Ukita asked.
The broadcast was still going on, with the mysterious person ranting now.
“We were given this gift to punish the unjust and the wicked. We were supposed to use this power to protect the innocents from the criminals out there as the true and original Kira wanted us to. not so that we could kill off people who had done no wrong! Now, I’m sure you could had become confused and led astray by the renegende shinigami who fell from grace and are now working against True God Kira’s noble plan for this world. You could had became deceived by those same fallen shinigami, so I’m simply informing you now… if you feel in your own heart that any Shinigami at your side has been lying to you for their own purposes… do not listen to them! ”
Suddenly the TV paused the broadcast to show videotapes from outside of Sakura TV’s building, where policemen were dying!
Apparently some people on the police force had felt that the broadcast was an disturbance of the peace, so they had gone to stop it… but soon as they touched the doors they dropped dead in front of the station!
Then the video of the dying policemen shrunk into a smaller video box on the channel as the Kira Broadcast continued.
“I’m telling you all this in the hopes that you will repent for having killed the innocents, by joining forces with me. Together, we could make sure no evil can threaten the innocent and pure people of this world. I know that some of you might think that you are the true god Kira… but you are not! At this moment, The true God Kira has been reborn as an human again, and is unaware of his destiny to change the world. But as the chosen ones who were given the gift of the Shinigami, it is our duty to help him awaken! For when he awakens, The true god shall purge the entire earth of any existing evil people left. All those criminals’ deaths so far shall be nothing in comparison then!”
“What the fuck? ” Aizawa just stared at the TV screen in disbelief.
“ He’s completely nuts! ” Matsuda commented, and everyone on the team save for L all nodded in agreement.
“ Hmm. ” L had gotten back into his chair, and were now just gnawing on his thumbs as he was lost in thought. Finally he spoke. “Imagine for one moment… what if everything this person said was true? That’d be very interesting, wouldn’t you say? ”
Matsuda shuddered. “That’d be scary, to be honest. If such a ‘mortal god’ existed… then it’d basically mean he would cause the end of humanity, wouldn’t it?? After all, there’s no such thing as an pure person… everyone’s done things they shouldn’t had… some worse than others, granted but still…”
L nodded solemnly. “Yes. But for now, I’m concerned with the fact that those policemen and other people out in front of the TV station died so quickly without their names even being shown. Does this mean this person doesn’t need names to go along with their faces unlike the current Kira? ”
The TV droned on. “ So if you agree that such a thing is wonderful, then I’m sure we could make very good allies. Therefore, we need to meet up somewhere. I’ve made an list that I’m sure only you chosen ones would understand. Somebody at the station will read the note for everyone out there once this is done broadcasting.
If you don’t want to meet up, that’s okay as well. But know this… I’ve got the eyes. Sooner or later, I’ll be able to find each one of you out there. By then… I hope you will consider my words and also think about the wisdom of siding with the True God Kira instead of the False Kira. ”
Suddenly, on TV they showed an van crashing into the building! Out of the van came an lone gunman with an helmet on so that nobody was able to ID him on TV. He ran into the building out of sight.
Everyone wondered who could do such a thing, as they became glued to the TV once again.
Suddenly, L’s phone rang. He gingerly opened it up with one finger, and then pressed the button. “Yes? ”
Light Yagami’s anxious voice came on from the other end. “ Has my father contacted you yet? He was supposed to take it easy at home here, but when we watched that Kira broadcast he became upset and ran out of the house! He even took our family van out of the garage instead of the company car… that’s not something he normally does. Oh shit, That’s our van on TV right now… ”
L couldn’t help but wonder how Light managed to get this number, and even voiced this. To the others in the room, he told them that it was Soichiro who had crashed into the building, and apparently was going to stop the broadcast from the look of things.
Ukita nodded. “ Good for him! Man, Chief’s got some guts doing that… ”
“ Never mind how I got your number ” An irate sounding Light answered on the other end of the cellphone. “I think it’s obvious that if I can hack into computers, I can hack into my own father’s cellphone to get your number. Anyway… The real issue is my father! He’s not taking two days of rest before working like he’s supposed to… When he contacts you and I know he will, just tell him that right now his family is very angry with him, okay? I’m especially angry at how he did such a dangerous reckless thing with the van… he could had died! I don’t think he should be pushing himself so hard like that, and I’m sure you agree right?”
L couldn’t help but mentally smile at how worried the young man was about his father. It was very obvious that the man cared that much for his father, and also the rest of his own family. His suspicion of Light lowered already all the way down to 0.2%.
To him, Kira was somebody who only cared about himself and nobody else. Sure, He could share some family affections and even have some feelings, but when it came to his own safety, he would sacrifice his own family to suit his own needs if necessary. So he certainly wouldn’t feel such concern for family members like this…
L just spoke in his usual monotone way. “ And why should I be the one to pass on the message? Can’t you tell him this yourself? ”
Light just sighed, sounding very frustrated. “Well, my father isn’t answering my calls. That’s why! Just let me know if he’s okay when you find out, okay? Please?”
Well, that “ please ” made L rise his eyebrows. Kira certainly wouldn’t beg like that.
L made an “hmm” noise, and then answered Light. “Alright. I’ll let you know as soon as I find out anything. ”
Light took a deep breath. “ Thank you. Alright, see you soon then. ”
With that the call was terminated.
However, as soon as that call was over, L’s cellphone rang once again.
L couldn’t help but sigh in annoyance. Man, he really hated those things. It better not be Light again…
“ Yes, this is L. ” L answered the cellphone again.
This time it was Soichiro Yagami.
“ I’ve broken into the TV station and confiscated everything that was sent to them from that person. I’ll need some help transporting the tapes and the other things back to headquarters. But the others on the team better bring helmets that hides their faces… I suspect strongly that whoever killed those policemen don’t need our names at all to go with our faces.” The chief said.
“ I see. You did a very good thing indeed. ” L praised the older man. He then paused slightly, before adding, “ although I don’t think your son is quite as happy as I am about that. He called me here just a few seconds ago… he was rather upset that you were putting yourself in such danger when you were supposed to be at home resting. ”
L could just easily imagine the sheepish expression on Soichiro’s face as the older man answered: “ Ah….well…he’ll get over it I suspect. After all, he understands how much this case means to me. ”
L smiled. “ indeed. ”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
–Two days later–
After L and the team had gone over the tapes, they all started thinking about how to use this information, and whenever it could mean anything.
Today was the day that he officially welcomed Light into the team.
“ Thank you for coming here. ” L said, as he shook hands with Light.
Light shook his head as he smiled. “ No need to thank me. After all, I do share your wish to catch Kira, Ryuga. ”
L simply nodded at that. “Alright. But while you’re here please call me Ryuuzaki.”
Light looked vaguely puzzled as the other teammates introduced themselves by their code names, even though he had already met them all before.
However he caught on, and then he smiled. “ So, that would make me Asahi Light? ”, referring to his father’s code name.
“ If you want. However I’ll be simply calling you ‘Light-kun’ during your stay here. ” L replied. “ Now, let us go over the videotapes and the other things that we recovered from Sakura TV, shall we? ”
Light agreed with that, so they sat down to go over everything, inducing watching the tape.
Once he had gone over everything, Light was silent for a second or two.
“So, what do you think light-kun? ” L wondered.
Light sighed. “I have to admit, I’m shocked. Remember when I spoke to you about the possibility of there being different Kiras out there? ”
L nodded at this.
Light then continued after seeing L nod at him. “I always assumed that it would be one leader and one follower switching shifts and doing their mysterious method together. I never imagined that there might be more than two killers out there with the same power… much less that some of those killers might have different ideas on how to use this method of theirs… and even working separately from the others! ”
“ But why would you assume that it would be one leader and one follower? I know you told me again but I think you should refresh my memory and also so that others here can hear your previous theory. ” L asked.
“ Well, I was studying the time patterns… the hours the criminals died at, that sort of thing. In the start the pattern was pretty random, almost like this person had an very busy life and didn’t have much time to himself. I believe I told you that part. Then as time progressed, the time of the deaths started becoming more non-random… there was literally 20-30 criminals dying every hour or so. This made me think that maybe there was a new person who had came into the scene, and were helping out the another person by taking nightly shifts or whatever. ”
The rest of the teammates seemed surprised by this. This was all news to them…L hadn’t told them about Light’s theory before it seems.
L chewed on his thumb as he thought about this. He then spoke. “ Of course this new information about the Kiras opposing each other slightly destroys that theory. Now it seems that there could be more than two out there, and each one of them could have their own patterns to go by. And since all of them use the same method, it gets harder to tell which is which… or even how many of them there is, since how their patterns here could overlap with each other and make it seem seamless, as if it was all done by one person instead. This of course, makes it harder to even find one of them… ”
Silence filled the room as every teammate started to feel slightly hopeless about the situation.
Light then started chuckling, drawing odd looks from the others. He then spoke. “This doesn’t mean the whole thing is hopeless though! It could be quite possible that one of those Kiras completely opposes what the others are doing… if we happen to find one that would willingly help us, then we could easily wrap up this case once we find out how they’ve been doing it. ”
L smiled. “ Yes…. That is quite possible. Once we find the key, all the doors are bound to open for us. ”
Cheered up by this, everyone moved on with the next order of business.
“ It’s totally obvious that we have to make a fake Kira tape responding to this one. Since we cut the broadcast off before they could read the note which spoke about the different dozen locations out there…the other Kiras have no way of knowing how to meet up. Which means, with this faked response of ours, we could suggest an location of our own that we could easily supervise and therefore be able to control any situations that might arise. ” Mogi replied.
L smiled at this. “A excellent suggestion. In fact I was about to suggest the same thing myself… and I suspect everyone else was thinking along the same lines? ” He looked around at the members who answered the question with nods.
“Then we’re all in agreement on our new plan then. The only question, who in this team can play a convincing Kira? I think we each will have to write an response which we think Kira wouldn’t be suspicious of, and see which one is the best. The one who writes the best and the most convincing response shall play the role of Kira. Otherwise, I don’t see this plan getting very far at all.” L spoke.
With that, the minutes passed into a full hour, as every team drafted their own responses… and the fact that everyone seemed to take a while was because they all had to think about it. Serval papers were already crumbled up and thrown into the trash can because a few felt that some of their attempts was way too obvious.
In the end, everyone passed around their own papers and read over the others’. and in the end, Light won. Matsuda was last on the list of people who could make an convincing Kira. Even though it wasn’t actually an competition to start with.
L wasn’t amused though, with some certain parts. “ Light-kun, how could you be so cruel towards me? Here it says: ‘so in short… I do agree with what you’re saying completely. However, I think you were foolish to have aired such details in public, especially with this L around. I don’t think I’d be completely comfortable meeting you in public until he was dead. In fact you should demand that the police comes to our side and for L to show himself on TV.’ Don’t you think you’re taking this Kira thing too far?”
Light just looked mildly amused, as his innocent-looking brown eyes looked back at L. “Oh, don’t take it personally. I just simply thought that would be how one of the Kiras might respond…After all, theorically… if I was one of the Kira people… I know I would surely see you as an threat. After all… you’re a very powerful man and you’re also very capable…regardless of how you look. Besides, wouldn’t it be an total insult if the Kiras didn’t see you as an threat at all, to the point that they would discuss such things so openly without worrying about you?”
L had to admit that Light was somewhat right about that. A part of him would definitely become insulted if any one of the Kiras didn’t consider him an threat. After all…He wasn’t just any man. He wasn’t just any detective. He was the LAW. He was JUSTICE.
He certainly wasn’t to be taken so lightly, that was for sure. He knew that would sound like he had an massive ego to others if he voiced this. That was the thing though… he didn’t care if anybody thought this of him. He never said he was an humble man anyway…
L smirked, as he moved closer towards the other man. He was practically straddling the now surprised young man’s legs, with his faces just inches apart away from the other’s face. He gazed into those now wide almond-colored eyes, and purred: “I see. So Light-kun considers me dangerous ? ”
The look on Light’s face was classic. His eyes were so big now, his mouth was opening and closing like he wanted to speak but no sound was coming out. And he was actually starting to blush!
L couldn’t help but stare at him in wonder. For some reason, he didn’t think somebody so self-composed as Light-kun would be so off guard to blush like that. And the weird thing was, L liked seeing Light blush like that…
But why would Light blush like this?
He heard an loud cough behind him, and he turned around to see Soichiro Yagami looking at him with an strange expression… his eyebrows raised high.
Behind him, the rest of the team were just staring with disturbed/morbidly fasciated expressions at L and Light.
“ Just…what do you think you’re doing on top of my son like that? ” Soichiro yagami asked, pointing out how suggestive L’s current position looked right now.
“ I’m just joking with your son. After all, he’s the one who first made the comment about me being dangerous if he was Kira…so I took the instance of an interrogator with an suspect, even though I wasn’t too serious about it. Light-kun surely thinks this is funny too as well, right?” L explained as if this was the most obvious thing in the world, his wide eyes blinking innocently.
Light laughed easily, now that he had gotten some of his usual composure back. “ I have to say, you’ve got an real unusual sense of humor, Ryuuzaki. But can you get off me? My legs are starting to get tired.. ”
“ Very well, Light-kun. ” with that L returned to his seat and started eating some cake as if nothing happened at all.
Some of the men on the team looked like they wanted to comment, but they wisely shut their mouths. After all, it was just only a joke.. It was nothing important that they would keep on discussing this, so they just went back to work.
______________________________________________________
The mysterious man laughed as he watched this second kira’s broadcast on his DVD player, which he had set to record his TVs shows while he had been busy.
“ How excellent. Another person with a sense of drama! But…. He seems a little off in his head…I wonder if he actually believes all the crap he’s saying on TV. ” He spoke to himself, as he turned on his light. “Oh well, I suppose that’s just more inspiration for my books… ”
Now that the lights were on, the man’s features could be seen clearly.
He had long dyed red hair, which stopped just below the shoulders. His fashion was that of the latest from the fashion magazines… in fact to many he looked just exactly like an very handsome celebrity.
Which wasn’t too far from the truth, actually.
He was a well-known writer of horror books, and also directed horror movies. His movies were well-known all over the globe for their disturbing content, the gore, and how well it played upon the mortal fear of death.
He was practically worshiped like an god by fans of his work.
Recently, some of his books even got converted into an TV series which propelled him even more into the spotlight, gaining him even more fans.
He chuckled, remembering his first book he wrote. It was an book which talked about Shinigami and how they stayed alive by taking away the lifespans of humans. However, in his book the Shinigami didn’t take the lives of humans by using notebooks.
His book had actually been based on his old diary from when he was an kid. The funny thing was, until he had gained back ownership of a Death note, he used to think that his old diary entries had been nothing but his overactive imagination. After all, Kids were prone to such things, right?
When he forgot after he lost the death note… and then read his own diary about the Shinigami years later as an adult, he thought the idea of an Shinigami using something so mundane as an regular-looking notebook to kill was too farfetched. However, he did like the idea of Shinigami preying on humans. After all, Shinigami were supposed to be mysterious and scary!
So he took that “ idea ” and changed the notebook part. Instead of Notebooks, the Shinigami used those cursed pens made out of their own bones, and their own blood as the ink as the driving force behind their powers. They could write on anything, even regular human notebooks if they wanted. but they did carry around large books on their backs that was encased in human bones for when they found nothing else that they could write on.
He thought that would make them seem more scary in his book, and it worked. It was what made him famous, after all.
But now that he was an death note owner again… he remembered everything clearly now.
And now this other person on TV was babbling about how Shinigami could lie and stuff. He couldn’t help but chuckle at that.
That was the strangest part for him in all this so far. One of those Death Notes had simply dropped out of the blue one day, and nobody but him had noticed. As soon as he picked it up, he couldn’t help but remember everything…
And he had expected that the Shinigami he had made friends with as an kid to come back to him. But no Shinigami had appeared for him at this time. So there was nobody at his side who would ever deceive him of anything.
He had felt a strange sense of isolation at this, but now he no longer felt this way, now that he knew there was others like him out there.
He wondered if he should make the effort to go and find this other person who had rambled nonsensically on TV. There was the chance that the other person would kill him once she/he found out who he was… and even when they found out his true nature.
He didn’t really care about this at all…. Being killed, that was. He had died before, and gone to Mu if not only for a few seconds. He had managed to come back from the dead… and the experience had changed him. Even though it had been only for a few seconds in the world of the living, he had experienced eternity in that place.
So over the 7 years as he grew up, he had experimented with all the different ways he could use the death note. He wrote in his diary all about it, in minute detail. Also when he could he even filmed the reactions and the deaths of the humans he had killed, so that he could watch them die all over again when he felt like it. He had of course, hidden his tapes away where not even his own family could find them.
There was even times when he delighted in making them die in the most gruesome ways, taking special care to place video cameras all over the area, so that he could capture every detail from all angles. Then writing it all down, describing it in poetry form.
Why? Just because he could. Plus, his time in Mu had made him realize many things about not just himself, but about humanity in general. He had realized that his life had been empty, meaningless… just like every human on the planet.
All that crap about Good and evil? That was nothing but illusions, and Humans were just nothing but a type of animal that specialized in over-rationalizing the things they did, and even placed too much meaning on their own lives.
Be studious and be on your best behavior. But Why?
So you can have the best jobs. But Why?
So you can earn more money. But Why?
To lead an rich, shallow life based on material things that you can’t even have forever. And even if it was to support your family, etc… not even family were forever. They too could easily go away in a blink, so to speak. Nothing lasted forever, and even after a while became meaningless.
Hell, there was very few things that you could even take with you after you had died. Your soul was one thing… your memory was another thing you could take into the afterlife. But from what he heard, not even memory lasted very long, especially if the reincarnation theory was true. When you were reincarnated, only fragments of your last life lingered.
And even then, the soul’s personality would change and twist slowly with each life, if the whole reincarnation thing was true… so you could be an evil man in one life and then be actually an good man in the next life, depending on what you choose to be. There no such thing as an evil soul or even an good soul.
So really, it was just all about choices… the rest was meaningless, even religion.
After all, why follow certain religions and then try your best to be a good person? What if all of it was completely wrong? What if Mu (nothingness) was all there was for us, like he had experienced?
Then whenever you were an mass murderer or even an saint didn’t matter at all. For both the saint and the mass murderer, they went to the same place.
So that was why he choose to enjoy his life to the fullest, even when he was killing people… even without an death note.
He got the feeling that the other person out there wouldn’t really exactly approve of his viewpoint; the other death note user seemed to be the religious fanatic sort. So he’d have to keep that aspect of his life hidden from the others.
He then decided right there that he wouldn’t really go to this other person… he was famous enough in the media for somebody out there like this person to notice him. So in the end he got the feeling that others would come to him instead.
He would bid his time, and he was sure that everything would then unfold before his eyes.
He smiled, at the thought that he would finally have some fresh material for his books. Killing people and recording their deaths was a good source of inspiration, but even that was getting old.
