2009 isn't much better
Part 6
Year 2009.
“Arthur? Arthur! Damn it!” Alfred threw the phone to the floor. “That old man hung up on me!”
Alfred drew a heavy sigh as he leaned against the wall. He hid his face behind the hands while trying to clear his mind. Maybe it was all in his head. All one big fantasy of his. He had those weird dreams quite often.
Slowly he moved over the floor to the window, ripped the curtain to the side and took a glance down into the garden. A woman looked up, smiled and waved. “Robot chick,” Alfred grunted and knocked his forehead against the window, “damn, it really is true.” The woman let go of some kind of mechanic laughter that went straight through the glass to Alfred’s already tortured ears, before she bowed down and continued to do her gardening-work. Apparently that was what she was used to doing.
“God! What is this?!”
Ludwig’s voice echoed down the hallway outside the room. His voice was shaking. It normally didn’t, and though Alfred found he had more than enough going on, he had to see what was going on. He pulled the curtains back, not wanting to see more to that robot, before he leapt from the room.
“Ludwig?” he called down the hallway, “where are you?” Said German’s head poked out from one of the rooms.
“Alfred! Oh God, you have to see this, this! This is…” He shook his head as he disappeared into the room again. Alfred wrinkled his brows as he went to the room and took a look in.
All the nations had been offered a room at Alfred’s home. Simply because they all often came by, and he rather had them at the same place every time than changing room all the time. So he knew the place quite well, and what every room looked like down to the least detail, and first glance told him nothing was really going on. Ludwig’s room looked like it always did; filled with weird posters, sausages in big containers on the shelves and some kind of angry music (or happy? With the German language you never know) filling the place.
But then his eyes came to rest on the bed.
“What in-”
“Just my words!”
“Hi!” Chibitalia happily squeeked, flashing a bright smile as he waved to Alfred, “nice to meet you, sir.” The little boy was in a huge frilled dress, sitting on the bed with rose-red cheeks. Ludwig was standing somewhere between the bed and the door, moving around in small circles as wasn’t he sure whether to approach the boy or grab the chance to flee. His face was pale as a dead body.
“Is that-?”
“Yes, it is!”
“…wow…”
“Don’t just say ‘wow‘!” Ludwig grabbed the hem of Alfred’s shirt and leaned down to look him into the eyes, “what should I do?!”
Alfred wrested his shirt free from Ludwig’s hands with a curious smile as he asked: “How long has he been like that?” Ludwig shrugged the shoulders and took a quick glance over the shoulder. Chibitalia smiled at him.
“He was like that as I woke up next to him. I mean, I’m used to having Feliciano running around in here at night, complaining about nightmares, but that-!” Alfred blinked with the eyes.
“You woke up next to him?”
“Yes, last night we- … Oh no! Not like that! I never did it with a child, I swear!” Ludwig clapped the hands together. His face had now went so pale that it matched his white walls. He held up a clenched fist in front of Alfred. “Don’t you dare to think I would do it with a kid!”
“Wow, calm down, Ludwig! I didn’t mean it like that!” Alfred protectively held up his hands in front of him as he backed a little, “I just meant, if you were together tonight, you may remember something that happened during the late hours?”
“Oh…” Ludwig’s fist slowly sunk. He looked down. Then he drew a heavy sigh and hid his face behind his arm. “Sorry, I’m just.. It’s too much for me to take. Everything is so weird.” Alfred smiled a little and patted Ludwig’s shoulder.
“Hey, I know, it’s okay.” He took a short look a Chibitalia. The kid was looking at them wonderingly. He was looking kind of cute. “Well, until we figure out what’s going on, we’ll have to take care of him. Can you do that, Ludwig?” Ludwig nodded slowly like a child, quickly wiping the tears from his eyes with the hope that Alfred hadn’t noticed.
“Yeah… I should be able to do that much.”
“Good.” Alfred waved a litte at the kid who chuckled and waved back. Then he turned his attention back to Ludwig. “I’ll go check on the others to see if anything had happened with them during the night. I’ll be back later, yeah?” Ludwig nodded. Alfred left the room quickly, and the sound of him running down the stairs echoed through the hallway. Ludwig turned to face Chibitalia with a tired glimpse in his eyes. Chibitalia smiled.
“I am hungry. May I have pasta?”
‘No difference from Feliciano, I see. Just a little more polite.’ Ludwig couldn’t help but smile a little, and he nodded:
“Yeah, let’s go get you some.”
