Saitou was up and running at the crack of dawn. He couldn't think of anything better he wanted more than to wrap things up and get back to Tokyo. It was abnormal thinking for Saitou, because the length of his absence from headquarters never mattered to him before. Nonetheless, Saitou didn't want to dwell on the reasons for his haste to get back. If he did, he would have had to admit a few things to himself about his feelings for Sano, and that was something Saitou is definitely was trying to avoid.
Most of the details Saitou needed to secure were almost gathered. Mitsu did a great job filling Saitou in. After his meeting with her, Saitou met with another connection, and still another one after that. Everything fell together as if he was walking around with a script that had already been written out for him. One thing after another in Nikko simply fell into place smoothly.
Although Saitou accomplished a lot in just one day he still ran into a bit of a snag. Saitou discovered that the information he needed on the future location of the syndicate he was investigating wasn't available. What Saitou did find was that a part of Mitsu’s assignment was to locate a building suitable to set up a pseudo mercantile that the syndicate would use to distribute their opium.
Saitou suggested to Mitsu that she ride along with him to Tokyo and he would assist her with putting together a list of possible locations so that she’ll have something to present to her associates to review when they join her in Tokyo. Saitou was relieved that she agreed without hesitation.
Of course, Saitou would much rather be in Tokyo while the syndicate decided on a suitable location to distribute their goods. He was satisfied with the way his little manipulation worked. At least, Saitou was moving forward and he didn't have to extend his stay in Nikko. He packed his travel bag and made sure that the information in his portfolio was tucked away in there as well.
A tap at Saitou’s door followed by a gentle female voice announced, “Mr. Fujita, your carriage is here.”
Saitou slid the door open and settled his bill with the young lady for his stay at the inn. He was excited about getting back to Tokyo, even sooner than he anticipated. Was it just the fact that he didn’t have to stay away from his comfortable home, or was it because Saitou had finally found someone whom he looked forward to seeing?
“Here you go driver,” Saitou handed the carriage attendant his travel bag and a few other articles he had with him. “We will be picking up Miss Akatsuki on the way and I would like to make this a quick trip, so the less stops we have to make the better.”
The driver bowed and held the door open for Saitou to get in, and then shuts the door. “The weather looks fine for travel, sir.” The driver smiled and tipped his hat, “I don’t see a problem making good time.”
"Excellent," Saitou said and he reached into his cigarette pouch, retrieved the carefully rolled tobacco and tucked it between his lips. He usually said that, ‘fresh air and a cigarette was good for clearing one’s mind,’ but that aphorism didn’t hold true for Saitou this time. The fresh air had his cigarette tasting exceptional, but his mind was definitely not clear.
Nothing made sense to Saitou when he thought about the situation concerning Sano. Devising this plan to cut his stay in Nikko short was a sure indication that Saitou was out of control.
“Ahou,” Saitou whispered, “what are you doing to me?” Saitou felt his heart skip a beat and it caused him to draw a sudden breath. “How can this be happening to me?” Saitou questioned himself out loud. “I thought this separation would have relieved me of these thoughts and yearning, but it has only grown more intensely prevalent.”
The carriage slowed to a stop and the driver wasted no time in jumping down off his seat to open the carriage door. “Mr. Fujita, do you wish me to announce the carriage to the Miss?”
“It is quite alright, thank you, I will escort Miss Akatsuki myself, but do come along for her luggage please,” Saitou said as he stepped off the carriage and crushed his cigarette under foot before making his way to call on her.
“Mr. Fujita!” Mitsu held her hand out to greet Saitou while she wore the sweetest smile she was able conjure. “I’m so glad to see you here bright and early as we’ve planned. Please, do come in while I gather my carry bag for the trip.”
“Thank you Mitsu, my driver will take your luggage to the carriage, if this is all that you have here,” Saitou gestured to the two bags that was near the doorway.”
“That will be fine,” Mitsu called out from the other room.
Saitou nodded at the driver and Mitsu’s luggage was quickly taken up by the driver to be secured on the carriage for the trip.
Mitsu returned to the room, held her clutch bag up in the air and waved it, “I’m as ready as I ever will be. Shall we, Mr. Fujita?”
“After you, Mitsu,” Saitou smiled and nodded.
Mitsu was very much surprised and delighted to see that Saitou was acquainted with the western customs, such as, allowing a lady to precede the gentleman. In fact, everything about Saitou was appealing to her in one way or another. Mitsu enjoyed his deep voice and gentle tone. The thought had occur to her that it would be best for her to keep her heart in check before the handsome gentleman gets the best of it.
The driver held the carriage door for the couple. Saitou offered Mitsu his hand, so to help her into the carriage. She gladly placed her hand into his, and quickly noticed how strong Saitou’s grip was around her tiny fingers.
“I must say, Mr. Fujita, your hand feels so strong,” Mitsu said as she gave Saitou’s hand a gentle squeeze. “I wouldn’t be surprised to find the rest of you is as strong.”
“It takes many battles for a man to discover his strength, but it takes a woman’s touch for him to realize his weakness.” Saitou peered into Mitsu’s wistful eyes and grinned.
Is that hunger Mitsu saw in the man’s eyes? There was defiantly something that Mitsu was being drawn to, and yet at the same time, it frightened her as well. She wanted to know, what it was about this tall handsome gentleman that made her feel absolutely safe, but then, on the other hand, feel so threatened. She certainly found the Mibu Wolf very attractive and enjoyed looking at him seated across from her in such tight quarters. Mitsu had a feeling she was going to enjoy her carriage ride immensely.

“So, if it isn’t Mr. Rooster-head himself, paying me a cordial visit. I must say, I am humbled to find myself in your presence,” Cho teased Sano as Sano entered the room.
Sano sat down in a chair against the wall next to Cho’s desk and looked over at the thin, lanky Kyoto man. “Hey, I thought they kept the cleaning equipment in the closet, Broom-Head!”
The two young men chuckled at their verbal play which entertained them and made up the bulk of their relationship.
“It looks like Saitou has you where he wants you… TIED to a desk,” Sano said as he tried to provoke Cho.
Cho leaned back in his chair and clasped his hands behind his head. “You know what your problem is, Rooster-head?” Cho paused, not expecting an answer from Sano, but attempted to get Sano worked up a bit. “You are just jealous because I’m sitting here and you’re not.”
“Is that so? Don’t you think you’re being kind of childish talking about shit like that?” Sano asked as he shook his head. “You’re such an idiot, you know that?”
“If I am such an idiot, then why are you visiting me? I know perfectly well you didn’t come here to relish your eyes on my handsome face.” Cho questioned Sano and then accusingly added, “You're here to check up on Saitou, and maybe get on his good side. I’ll save you some time—he ain’t here and won’t be for a few days.”
“Yeah yeah, I know all about old ‘Narrow eyes’ going to Nikko on special assignment, and I also know that he’ll be back in a few days, “ Sano said grudgingly.
“Hey, wait one damn minute!” Cho sat up straight in his seat, “How do you know all the shits on Saitou when that information is supposed to be classified?”
Sano let out a roaring laugh and said, “Hah! Will you look at Mr. Jealousy himself!" There are a lot of things that I know that you don’t! It's mainly because you’re chained to this desk, and you're not out there where Saitou and I are tackling the real action!
“You don’t fool me,” Cho shot back at Sano, “I know that Saitou is not stupid enough to let the likes of YOU get involved and foul things up for him.” Cho pushed back in his chair again and raised his eyebrows to interrogate Sano. “So, what’s the real reason you’re here?”
Sano reached over and snatched a piece of paper and scribbled a note, folded it in half and then quartered it. “Here, give this to Saitou as soon as he gets in. It’s really important, so don’t screw it up if you know what’s good for you.” Sano tossed the note on Cho’s desk.
“I can do that, no problem,” Cho looked down on his desk at the folded note and then looked back at Sano. “Are you finished, or do you want to keep standing there looking even more stupid than you already appear to be?”
Sano turned around and headed for the main corridor, “Broom-head!”
Cho waited until Sano left the room and then picked up the note. “Hmmm,” Cho hummed out loud to himself. Cho unfolded the note and read it:
“Saitou… Important… We need to talk… Sano.”
“I wonder what can be so important to make that Rooster-head come all this way to leave a stupid message like this. Can it be that Saitou is allowing that birdbrain to get involved in the assignment? Shit, if that’s true…” Cho got up from his seat, walked over to Saitou’s office and tossed Sano’s message on the face of Saitou’s desk, “…if that’s true there’s no hope for Japan.”

“Mr. Fujita,” Mitsu smiled and offered a biscuit to him, “have one, please.”
“Thank you Mitsu, but I am afraid I don’t have much of an appetite at the moment,” Saitou declined, but smiled at her in a friendly manner.
“Perhaps if you take just a nibble, then you may find your appetite.” Mitsu scooted herself up to the edge of the carriage seat, so to move a little closer to Saitou. She held out the biscuit as an offering.
Saitou appreciated her gesture, and took pleasure in looking at the beautiful woman. The shimmer in her jet-black hair shown almost blue in the sunlight that filtered through the passing trees outside the carriage window. Her ivory skin was toned flawlessly, and her eyes balanced her fair skin and dark hair as though an artist blended the two contrasting elements together to create perfection. Yes, Saitou did realize Mitsu’s beauty.
Mitsu detected Saitou’s interest by the way he was looking at her, “Mr. Fujita, it seems to me that your appetite requires a different type of menu?”
Mitsu studied Saitou’s intimidating, yet astonishing eyes as he fed on her beauty. She wasted no time in sending Saitou an unspoken message by bringing the biscuit to her lips, while she gazed deeply into him through his soul’s windows. The color of his eyes, Mitsu thought, is magnificently painted gold by nature, yet they seemed dark deep within. The deeper Mitsu gazed, the stronger she felt drawn to him. She was afraid that if she allowed herself to linger too long, or travel too deep into the man’s gaze, she might not be able to return whole.
Saitou received her message and knew she desired much more than a business relationship. This is not the first time Saitou had to deal with such situations working on special assignment. He knew how to take it in stride, and sometimes, he enjoyed himself doing so. This time, Saitou found himself preoccupied. He tried to fight off the preoccupation, because in that state of mind Saitou couldn't be fully focused on keeping his guard up. In fact, he was barely listening to Mitsu and hadn’t noticed that she had moved forward on her seat to get his attention.
“Mr. Fujita?” Mitsu reached out and placed her hand on Saitou’s knee. “Mr. Fujita, are you all right?”
Saitou took a moment to snap back to the present from his preoccupation, blinked his eyes a few times and realized that Mitsu was leaning close to him, staring into his eyes with concern. “Please forgive me, I have a few personal matters that I need to attend to when I get back to Tokyo and it has been on my mind,” Saitou said.
“Perhaps I can help you relax and better your concentration,” Mitsu said as she advanced slowly toward Saitou. At the same time, she let her hand trail up Saitou’s leg from his knee until she had it resting upon his mid thigh.
Saitou narrowed his gaze onto Mitsu’s eyes and he tilted his head until he was looking down at her out of the corner of his eyes. “It seems to me that you might be a little bored with the carriage ride and seek a little excitement?” Saitou amusingly questioned Mitsu.
She giggled a bit and hushed her voice to almost a whisper. Mitsu released her stare from Saitou’s eyes and answered Saitou’s question with a question. “And if I were looking for a bit of recreation on our way to Tokyo, Mr. Fujita?” She looked back into Saitou’s eyes, “What would you say to that?" Her sight drifted to Saitou’s neck, his broad strong shoulders, then to his chest. Finally, Mitsu rested her eyes on Saitou’s crotch in admiration.
Saitou leaned forward, let his hand slide down under her jaw and stopped at her neck. He tightened his grip and pushed her back into her seat.
It was unexpected and Saitou’s behavior startled Mitsu. Her small frame had no resistance to Saitou’s five feet, eleven inch frame, and she easily gave way to his shove. Saitou just about left his chair and placed one knee on the floor of the carriage and leaned onto her until her back made contact with the carriage seat behind her.
Mitsu gasped, “Mr. Fujita! She exclaimed in surprise coupled with fear.
Saitou looked at Mitsu and saw desire in her eyes. He noticed how much she wanted him. It was very obvious to the wolf since she had been hinting at it from the very beginning. Saitou spoke to her in a low soft tone. “You can amuse yourself with whatever it is that you want…” Saitou paused, shifted his weight back onto his knee removing his weight from her and released the hold on her neck, “…as long as you don’t involve me. You see, Mitsu, I never mix business with pleasure and it’s best that you understand that before we get to Tokyo.”
Saitou took his seat and watched Mitsu regain her composure. He had a feeling, that what had done, would keep her quiet for the rest of the trip. At that time they were already more than half way to their destination and Saitou didn't want to have to keep dodging Mitsu’s advances for the other half.
“Mr. Fujita?” Mitsu called out meekly to him.
Saitou acknowledged her by nodding, and gave Mitsu his attention.
“Please forgive me for my advances,” Mitsu requested, “I am never so forward, but with you, it was almost impossible to refrain.”
Saitou reassured her with a smile and said, “If we met at another time, and under different circumstances, I still would have done what I just did." Saitou paused briefly and then added, “I would have done one thing differently.”
“Oh, Is that so Mr. Fujita? May I ask, what it is that you would have done differently?” Mitsu asked thinking that it might help her to understand the man.
“I would have first taken your breath with a kiss, and then taken you for myself.” Saitou spoke in all honesty.
Mitsu smiled with relief that Saitou didn't reject her advances out of disinterest, but rather because of circumstances. There was still hope for the future when circumstances would change and business would be over between them. Saitou’s behavior only fanned the fire that was growing within her. Mitsu found herself even more attracted to Saitou.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Sano desperately tried to run from the thoughts he was having about Saitou. He felt like he was in limbo because he didn't know how Saitou felt about him, nor did he have a clue where the two of them were headed. For all Sano knew, Saitou could be playing some sort of sick game with him, even though Saitou denied doing so.
“Finally here!” Sano said out loud and then proceeded to enter the building and was greeted by the host of the *furoya.
“Sanosuke-san! Come in, come in!” An older woman gestured to Sano to remove his footwear and enter the back room. The woman called out for one of the hostesses to attend to Sano.
Sano bowed, thanked the older woman, and turned to see a familiar face rushing toward him.
“Miyoko-chan,” Sano bowed and had on the biggest smile he could muster up for her. “I need to get rid of some tension and this is better than tanking down a gallon of sake!”
“Ahhhh, perfect Sanosuke-san, perhaps a massage will help too!” Miyoko handed him a bath tray and towel for Sano to prepare himself for the soak.
“Hmmm, you must be a mind reader Miyoko-chan, I think I’ll take you up on that this time.”
Miyoko bowed and smiled. “Enjoy your bath Sanosuke-san. I will go and prepare a room for your massage.”
Sano went off into the back room, removed his gi and prepared himself for the soak. The young man had taken many beatings in his time, but he had never felt as ‘beaten’ as he felt right after Saitou reappeared in his life. His mind raced through the events he went through with Saitou leading up to his current situation.
Doubt overshadowed most of Sano’s thoughts about Saitou, but then, He remembered what Kenshin said to him at the dojo. It is a back-and-forth battle between doubt and assurance. Sano wrapped the towel around his waist, exited the dressing room and walked over to the soak hall.
“Ahhhh,” Sano sighed and slowly slipped himself into the water. “I should have done this sooner,” Sano said slipping even further into the water. The heat against his muscles causes him to relax and let go of his cares. The steam filled his lungs as Sano inhaled deeply and let his eyes closed lazily shut.
The heat of the bath and the topic of Sano’s thoughts urge a diverse array of feelings to surface. Some of which were feelings he had never experienced until now. What does this mean? Sano wondered. I’ve known only a few men who had relationships with other men, but I thought it was just for sexual gratification. I’ve never known a guy actually ‘loving’ another guy. Shit, I must be insane to even think on this. Sano was really starting to worry.
Sano questioned himself when he recalled how he came right out and confessed his love to Saitou. Sano tried to fight the thoughts, but fighting it only made him think on it more. What the fuck is the matter with me? I wonder what that narrow eyed wolf thought when he heard THAT from me? He must have had a good laugh after I left that night. Sano hit the water with his fist, causing it to splash in all directions.
“*Oi!” Miyoko shouted when the water splashed over the bath bin and onto her.
“Sorry about that Miyoko-chan, I guess I got carried away in my thoughts,” Sano apologized.
Miyoko looked down at Sano sitting in the bath bin, giggled and said, “Ahhh, by the looks of things the thoughts you were having must be very GOOD thoughts?”
Sano looked down to see what Miyoko is referring to and realized that he is wearing an erection that would make any man proud to be a man.
“Oh this?” Sano laughed nervously. “Must have been something I ate!”
Miyoko giggled even louder. “If Sanosuke-san is ready for his massage, the room is prepared and waiting," She said as she picked up Sano’s towel. Miyoko unfolded the towel, stood up and held it on either end to receive Sano as he exited the water.
Sano stepped into the towel awkwardly since his partner-in-crime didn't seem to want to deflate itself. Sano did the best he could to make adjustments once the towel was around his waist, but it was still pretty obvious and continued to precede Sano as he left the bath hall on route to the massage parlor.
Miyoko led Sano to a room that was private only by a *majikiri making up smaller booths within the one big parlor. She helped Sano lay face down on the massage *goza and knelt beside him. Carefully, Miyoko removed a small vessel from its holding pot-warmer and poured some of its contents on Sano’s back.
Sano sighed as he felt the warm liquid contact his skin. Miyoko began her massage at Sano’s shoulders. Undoubtedly, Sano was under stress and Miyoko felt it in his muscles as she rubbed the mint oil into his skin.
“Sanosuke-san, you are so tense,” Miyoko said as she continued to rub down his back. She felt every knot and expertly eased their hold on the young man. One after the other, she worked her hands through Sano's stressed muscles until Sano could definitely feel the difference from before he decided to have Miyoko work her miracle.
“Miyoko-chan… ahhhh… ooooh,” Sano moaned. “I’m sure your talented hands will work the kink out of my back. Just keep doing what you’re doing and I’ll be a new man after this is all over.”
“If you don’t remedy the cause of your tension, you will return here quickly, Sanosuke-san,” Miyoko said with concern. “Perhaps a holiday would do you some good?”
Sano sighed again feeling Miyoko’s hands at his buttocks. “The last thing I want to do is to go on some holiday and not be here when…” Sano almost let out the fact that he was waiting for Saitou’s return and quickly recovered, “…when there is really no reason to go anywhere else.”
Miyoko made sure she loosened every muscle on Sano’s back. She knew Sano for years and had always been fond of him. In the past, Sano would only show up for a massage if he really needed healing, and she would be there to listen to all of Sano’s stories of how he’d gotten himself tattered and bruised. This time, it is different. Sano didn’t choose to talk about his stress, but he did seem very preoccupied and Miyoko sensed that Sano had much more going on than just muscle aches.
“Sanosuke-san, if you should ever need more…” Miyoko paused.
Sano knew Miyoko truly cared for him, and that what the motivated Sano’s visit to the furoya this time. She always had a way of making him feel special and important. He needed to feel anything besides what he had been feeling lately.
Sano sat up, crossed his legs before him and moved closer to Miyoko. “Miyoko-chan, you don’t have to tell me. I know you’d do almost anything I would ask for. You’ve given me all I need right now and as usual, you’re the best there is! You made me feel better. Thank you, Miyoko-chan,” Sano said as he put his hand on Miyoko’s shoulder and smiled at her.
Miyoko smiled her biggest for Sano and giggled. “Sanosuke-san?” Miyoko playfully whispers.
“Hmmm?” Sano nods.
Miyoko reached between Sano’s legs and snatches his manhood in her hand, gave it a teasing squeeze and said, “Maybe one day you will allow Miyoko to work on this muscle?”
The couple laughed together and Sano felt refreshed both physically and mentally.
Miyoko excused herself to fetch Sano’s clothes from the changing room. Sano’s mind instantly wandered back to Saitou. Maybe I’ll pass his house on my way home. Yeah, I’ll get a bite to eat and THEN go check on his place, he thought, as he tried to convince himself that it was a good idea. At least Sano would feel a little closer to Saitou, even though they were miles apart.
“Sanosuke-san, here are your clothes,” Miyoko bowed and entered the room. She knelt before Sano and then assisted him in dressing.
