A/N: Finally an update! I'm
am deeply sorry for the months of nothing! I won't make excuses... I
was procrastinating due to senior year and college preparations. I
try to type as long as the muse and inspiration are alive (which
seems to be in small spurts as of late). And as much as I loathe
filler episodes, chapters, etc... this is one of those. I didn't like
how fast the plot seemed to be going so this little chapter's purpose
is to slow that down and give our little Zero some alone time with
Kaname.
In this chapter, we see a moment where Kaname and Zero bond
emotionally. We get a glimpse of Kaname's past. And Zero is an
adorable little human!
RukiRomance:
I love you Zero-chan!! (-squeeze-)
Warning(s): None in this
chapter. Maybe Fluff? OOC-ness is likely!
Disclaimer: Characters are
borrowed. No money is being made. I only lay claims to my OCs
(Ashling, Lucifer, and Luna), the city Callen, and the plot. Again,
no money is being made.

Strings of a Puppet
Chapter 7
Trinkets
From Time's Past
As of late, Kaname found his room to be the one place little Zero
seemed to like 'exploring'. It's not like his room was overly grand,
but there were many places to be, as Zero put it, explored. And his
room just happened to be the most popular; not that he was going to
complain about the time he got to spend with the boy while Rido was
otherwise occupied. It was times like these that Kaname could gaze
uninhibitedly at Zero without the reprimanding glare of his uncle.
His uncle's possessiveness was annoying to say the least...
And the company was neither imposing nor meddlesome. In fact, Kaname
had come to enjoy the boy's presence, even if he did tend to get into
his things more than he wished. However, today found the boy rifling
through his closet. It was amusing to watch the boy's beautiful eyes
widen to great proportions when he opened the ornate closet door.
What Zero expected to find in the large walk-in closet was beyond
him. But it kept the human occupied, none the less.
So occupied, it seemed, that the boy must have gotten lost. Kaname
was just about to get up from his desk and proceed to compile a
search and rescue team when the silver-haired boy barreled out of the
closet - nearly tripping in the process. With a sigh and inaudible
chuckle, Kaname relaxed. He no longer questioned the boy's
clumsiness, for it seemed to be genuine.
Before returning back to the book he was currently reading, Kaname
noticed the boy held an old wooden box. Ah, it seems he found some
'treasure' after all.
“What have you got there, Zero-chan?” Kaname placed the
book down and smiled at Zero's positively beaming eyes. Standing up,
he joined Zero on his bed.
“Kana-nii, I didn't know you had so much treasure in such a
small box!” Zero ran his fingers gently over the box's engraved
design, a look of wonder upon his face. As he opened the latch on the
front, he glanced at Kaname as he opened the lid, showing the brunet
its contents.
Inside the wooden box were several trinkets, which Zero proceeded to
dump out onto the comforter. The trinkets were that of many
varieties. Some of which held a deeper sentiment, such as: a single
rose in a resin filled bottle*, an old photograph, and two wedding
bands - a man and a woman's.
“Ah, I see you have found my 'Memory Box',” Kaname
informed as he examined the items, touching each trinket with a fond
touch.
“What are all these, Kana-niisan?” Zero picked up the
small bottle from the bed, examining the little rose inside it, “Is
this a real flower?”
“These are precious things that hold the memory of my parents
within them. Inside that bottle of resin is a rose which blooms only
once every ten years,” Kaname explained.
“Really? Only once? Why?” the look of curiosity burned
within those amethyst eyes and Kaname could all but smile.
“It is a special rose, Zero-chan,” Kaname picked up the
photograph and pointed to a beautiful man on the far left, “My
father had given it to my mother when he proposed to her,”
Kaname traced the face of the woman in the photo, “Mother had
told me it was in full bloom when he had given it to her. And I've
only seen it bloom once when I was younger. It should blossom again
in a few years.”
Zero leaned in and tilted his head in wonder, his hand moving to
touch the people in the photograph only to stop and look up at
Kaname, as if asking permission. Understanding the boy's intentions,
Kaname nodded, letting the silver-haired boy take the picture from
his fingers.
“Ne, Kana-niisan, is that cute baby you?”
The all too innocent question made Kaname chuckle, but hearing the
boy call him cute had his chest swelling with a fluttering
feeling of happiness tinged with embarrassment. Zero looked up and
cocked his head to the side (he looked like a puppy every time he did
that), then looked back at the photograph.
“Yes, Zero-chan, that was me,” Kaname scooted closer to
look at the photo gently held between small fingers. He was so close
that Kaname unknowingly sniffed the boy's hair, hmm lavender
scented shampoo. It was befitting of the boy, Kaname thought.
“You were so tiny!” the boy giggled, the pure, childish
sound filling the room and Kaname's heart.
“That I was,” Kaname smiled fondly, the moment seeming so
perfect.
“Where are they now, your parents? Will I get to meet them?”
Kaname stiffened, his smile falling into a hard line. He knew the
questions were that of an innocent child's wonder and curiosity...
but why he hesitated to answer, he wasn't sure. It was a simple
answer, yet it caught in his throat. Struggling to respond without
letting loose a slew of emotions, Kaname stood and walked to the
other side of the room and gazed out his window, his arms crossing
over his chest as he sighed.
“My mother and father were... in an accident,” he spoke
quietly, his voice monotone, “It is not possible for you to
meet them, Zero-chan.” Deep down, Kaname pleaded for Zero to
not prod for further explanation. He couldn't let his inner turmoil
of emotions be released upon the boy...
Zero watched Kaname leave the bed and stand by the window. The
brunet's back looked so... sad. Placing the photograph onto
the bed, Zero followed.
Kaname started when small arms wrapped around his waist tightly and a
nose and forehead pressed into the center of his back. Looking over
his shoulder with widened eyes he saw the top of a silver head.
“I'm sorry, Kana-niisan!!” Zero's voice was muffled as he
spoke into Kaname's back.
“Zero-chan...” Kaname's heart skipped a beat at the
boy's words and hot breath as his shirt absorbed them.
“I made Kana-niisan remember something sad... I didn't mean to
make Kana-niisan sad... I'm sorry....”
The child's arms trembled and his hands gripped the brunet's shirt
and the faint scent of salt reached Kaname. Zero is... crying?
With inhuman speed Kaname unlatched the boy's arms and turned to face
the boy, who gasped at the suddenness of the movement.
Kaname had never noticed before just how small Zero was. Even though
they were close in age, Kaname looked several years older and towered
over the little 11-year-old human. He lowered himself to one knee,
placing his hands firmly on the boy's shoulders.
“You don't have to apologize, Zero-chan! The memories are sad,
yes. But you did not make me sad,”
Kaname used the pad of his thumb to swipe the tears from Zero's
cheeks.
“P-Promise?” Zero asked, needing reassurance from the
older male. No matter how many times Kaname wiped the tears, another
seemed to fall in it's place.
“I promise, Zero-chan,” with those words the tears slowed
and Kaname drew the child into a comforting embrace, whether it was
for Zero or himself, Kaname wasn't sure. Maybe it was for both.
“Good. 'Cuz I like Kana-niisan the best when he is happy!”
Zero giggled and wrapped his arms around Kaname's neck.
Kaname felt his cheeks burn with heat. The boy's declaration was
innocent, nothing more. A brotherly infatuation, maybe. But never
something greater, much to Kaname's disappointment.
“And I like Zero-chan the best, no matter what,” was all
Kaname had to say to make Zero squeal with happiness, deafening the
oldest momentarily.

*The rose in resin that blooms once every ten years – for all
those hardcore VK fans, like moi, I had to add this! Kaname gave this
to Yuuki when he came back from the holidays in the manga and
anime... And I just love the concept of the gift.
