As Olivia finishes changing into her uniform, Fang greets her with a low growl and a friendly wag of his tail. Olivia smiles and pats the Mightyena on the head as he walks away, his front end seeming to jump a little from the missing limb as he heads out the door. Olivia soon heads out of her room, fully dressed and ready to begin her normal task, when she's approached by Nurse Joy.
"Olivia, I'm going to need your help up front today. We have a full list of appointments for vaccinations and three surgeries to do that I'll need help for. Not to mention my lead Chansey had to be transferred to the lab for more testing since she didn't clear her health check. I'm not going to force you to assist in the surgeries, but for vaccinating the younger Pokémon, I'll need your help calming them down. Think you can do it?" Nurse Joy explains as she ushers the confused younger woman to the front desk. Olivia nods, her mind going numb from the sudden responsibility and a small sliver of fear washes over her at the thought of disappointing her boss and guardian.
"I think I can manage." Olivia replies, a smile on her face as the doors open to reveal two women, one red haired, the other raven haired, carrying three young Growlithe pups. As a group of Chansey take the pups on a stretcher to the exam room, Olivia watches as Nurse Joy goes to speak with the black haired girl, while the red accompanies the pups into the room, a growling noise coming from the Pokéball on her belt. Olivia follows the Chansey, ready to assist if needed, but they wave her off while the redhead complains that she needs to get the pups home quickly, the Pokéball on her belt growling menacingly as her frustration level grows. Olivia notices something strange as the Chansey appear to be talking to her, and she's replying with a seemingly random string of "Growlithe" common for when Growlithe are speaking to each other. Olivia leaves and hears Nurse Joy calling for her, so she stops by the storage room before returning and handing her a few Pokéballs for the pups.
"Thank you Olivia, You're doing wonderfully today. If you don't mind, could you go to the exam room with the vaccination machine and ask the Chansey with the collar for the charts for three Growlithe? After that, I'll need you to take the chart and put it into the slot on the computer for scanning. Once you finish that, you can go back to walking the Pokémon until after lunch." Nurse Joy comments with a smile to Olivia. Olivia walks away to finish up Nurse Joy's requests and go feed her Pokémon, Fang close by her side with a protective look on his face. As she turns back to the woman, Nurse Joy grins.
“I’ve noticed the little pups you brought in aren’t captured yet. I would suggest catching them so when and if they venture out on their own; other trainers don’t try to steal them from you. My assistant tells me they’ve all had their shots and your sister is eager to get them home. Please take care; I hope to see you again soon.” Nurse Joy comments, handing over the Pokéballs Olivia retrieved for her and bowing as the redhead storms back out of the exam room with the three Growlithe in her arms, yapping contentedly. The woman reaches to her belt and pulls out a Pokéball, releasing the creature from inside, a rather large and vicious looking Arcanine.
"Fine you fluffy idiot, feel free to come out of your ball now that I know you won't try and attack somebody." The redhead mutters under her breath as she glares at her companion.
As Nurse Joy turns to order the Chansey to clean the room for the next patient, she notices Farley looking up at the Arcanine, now obvious to be the source of the Pokéball's vicious growling, due to the fact that he's likely the father of the litter. Farley appears to be having a conversation with the large fire dog, and as the puppy Pokémon turns back to his post as guardian, a strange look appears to cross over his face as if the Growlithe is deep in thought.
"Farley, come." Olivia calls to the Growlithe, drawing Nurse Joy from her thoughts as the Growlithe barks and quickly follows his new trainer. As the trio heads into the yard to begin walking the Pokémon, Nurse Joy gets a strange feeling from the group that just departed from the Center. As she shrugs it off, she goes back to her room to prepare lunch.
"Soooool!" A yowling call comes from her bed as the shiny Absol rises from his nap and comes to greet his trainer.
"Hey Stormcry, aren't you a lover today." Nurse Joy greets, gently petting the now purring Absol as he nudges her legs with his head. As Nurse Joy head into the kitchen to prepare her lunch, Stormcry lets out a pitiful mew and then stalks off.
"I swear that Absol is getting more and more impatient lately." Nurse Joy comments to herself as she shrugs and continues chopping up vegetables for vegetarian sushi rolls. As she heads out to the Pokémon walking yard to share her food with Olivia and talk about the upcoming Trainer's Exam, she's greeted by a Ponyta galloping up to her and snorting.
"Well, Firefly, it's good to see you too." Nurse Joy addresses the fire pony, watching as the Ponyta shakes out his mane, the flame missing in a section near the base of his neck where a row of sutures show that he's undergone major surgery. As Olivia recalls him into his ball, Nurse Joy turns to her new assistant.
"Liv, I've been meaning to talk to you. There's a trainer's exam coming up for licensing new trainers to carry a team of six Pokémon. You can register to take it if you wanted. That way you could carry six Pokémon at a time, and then you can take your Healer's exam, so you can do more than just walking Pokémon. If you wanted of course." Nurse Joy proposes hopefully. Olivia smiles and nods.
"Of course, I want to help out more here. I like working for you. Oh, I had a question about that girl and the Growlithe pups." Olivia responds, her voice wavering as if unsure whether or not asking is appropriate.
"Yes?" Nurse Joy replies, her voice cheery as always, causing Olivia to smile again.
"Well, I was wondering, she seemed a little strange. When we were in the exam room, she was talking to the Chansey, I mean, she was dressed like an Arcanine fangirl, but she was talking like a Growlithe…was she a…hybrid?" Olivia questions, earning a smile from her employer.
"No, but the pups she was carrying are. It's common for hybrids to speak both human and Pokémon language, and so the mothers have to adapt in order to care for their babies. You see, it isn't uncommon during this time of year to see a lot of hybrids being born, and we're one of three Pokémon centers in this region who will treat them properly. Most Centers, like the one near where that family lives, will either turn hybrids away, or euthanize them if they're badly injured." Nurse Joy explains, her eyes darkening with hatred for her twin sister's practice of euthanizing any hybrid that is born in her care. Olivia looks up at her.
"But that's horrible! Killing somebody just because they're different than you! What about the law?" Olivia hisses, her usually quiet voice raising as hatred flows over her. Nurse Joy looks at her, startled.
"Olivia, sweetheart, there aren't any laws protecting hybrids. A few years ago I treated a little girl, she was a Purrloin hybrid. Her only crime was being alive and a mob had attacked her and her family. She was brought in on the back of a Luxray, he'd broken his bond with his trainer after being sent to kill her, instead he saved her life. This is what they face. It's legal in this region and two others for Pokémon and humans to mate, but there are no laws protecting their children from being slaughtered." Nurse Joy explains, her eyes glistening with unshed tears as she thinks about the girl. Olivia falls into her side, visibly crying, her sides heaving as tears soak into Nurse joy's shirt.
"That's awful. People who kill others shouldn't be allowed to train Pokémon." Olivia sobs, a worried Fang nuzzling into her arm as she grips Nurse Joy's arm.
"Oh honey, it's alright. I'll do everything in my power to save them, I always have." Nurse Joy replies, gently stroking Olivia's hair.
A/N: Yep, these are our loveable family members from Burying Bones that came in. We'll see them again in this story, but What do you think? While Nameless won't feature directly in this story, his actions seem to tie him to this Pokemon Center. ^_^ Anyway, Happy Reading -WWMH-
