“Wow, Rustboro is bigger than I thought,” Merry said to herself as she started walking into the city limits. The teen had just gotten out of the woods, and lasted through a double battle on the pedestrian bridge. Though right now, Merry had to get Rosie and Treeko to the Pokémon Center to get patched up as quickly as possible.
Oh, and she was beginning to crave some foods she wasn’t even sure how to pronounce right now. But that wasn’t on the front of her mind as she stepped through the doors of the Pokémon Center. Walking to the nurse, Merry set down the two Pokeballs. “Two for fixing up please,” Merry asked politely, handing over her ID. The nurse beamed at her.
“Okay Miss Walker, your Pokémon will be fully recovered in about two hours,” the nurse said to her as she handed back the teen’s ID card. “We will give you a call if anything comes up.” Merry smiled and nodded.
“Thank you ma’am!” Merry said in reply as she backed away, letting the nurse do her job and let the person behind come to the counter. Touching the smooth contours of Jinx’s Pokeball as she headed to the door, Merry noticed the rack full of maps and brochures next to the door and grabbed the one for Rustboro before stepping outside.
The sun was still shining high in the sky as Merry wandered over to a nearby bench and sat down on it, map in hand. “Okay, I’m there,” Merry muttered, looking at one point of the map, “Pokemart is there… and the gym is on the other end of the city…. Great.” Merry let a hand drift over her lower abdomen, feeling the gentle swell of her growing child… or children, she still didn’t know which. Merry folded the map back up and stuffed it into her bag. “Welp, Pokemart it is then.”
Merry walked down the streets, looking for the distinctive blue roof of the Pokemart. Soon, she quickly saw the roof, and Merry excitedly began jogging towards it. Reaching the building, Merry was about to go in when she saw a distinctive white hat in the crowd. “Brendon? Brendon!” she cried out, waving her arm up in the air.
Brendon had just finished shopping for some supplies and other necessities when he heard his name being called out. Looking around, the teen scanned the faces of the crowd until he finally saw Merry’s grinning face. “Merry?” he asked, amazed.
Merry laughed at Brendon’s admittedly adorkable expression as she pushed her way through the crowd to his side. “Hey Brendon,” she said, finally reaching the boy. “What are you doing here?” Brendon chuckled as he hefted his shopping bags.
“Well, shopping obviously,” he retorted with a smile. “What about you though? Last I saw, you were on Route 102.” Merry shrugged as she put her hands in her pockets.
“Oh, well, I visited Dad at his office,” she told him, smiling. “Met a couple of people too.” Brendon nodded.
“Cool! Hey, uhh, when did you get here?” Brendon asked as the two of them began aimlessly walking.
“Like not even half an hour ago,” Merry answered. “Why, taking me on a date?” she asked, teasing her friend as his face went red.
“Umm, no! Just a friendly invite for lunch!” Brendon quickly blurted out nervously. “Wh-why would you think we were going on a date, I never said it was a dateImeanwe’renoteventogethertogetherright?”
Merry laughed as Brendon finished his statement, doubling over as the boy next to her got even more flustered. “Brendon, just… give me a sec,” she said, trying to get herself back together. A moment later, she had managed to get her laughter under control. “Okay, I’m good,” she added, still grinning. Brendon smiled nervously as Merry continued to giggle.
“Sure you are,” he commented. “But seriously, can I get you something? My dad used to take me to this great café on 12th Street, it’s real close to the Rustboro Pokémon Preparatory Academy.” Merry nodded.
“Okay, sure,” she said. “I’d like to try it.” Brendon smiled widely as he led Merry through the streets, pointing out various features to her as they continued on their way to the café in question. On the way, Brendon pointed out various Rustboro landmarks to her such as the Rustboro Institute of Battle (which Merry mercilessly mocked the name, snickering as Brendon scratched his head in confusion), the Woodsman Monument, and then finally, they came up to a large, stone covered building.
“That’s the headquarters to the Devon Corporation,” Brendon said, putting his hands in his pockets. “They’re kind of like our version of Silph, but well, you know, ummmm…..” Brendon pulled a hand out, scratching his head in embarrassment as Merry giggle.
“Don’t worry, I get it,” she said, patting her friend on the back. “So, where’s the café?” Brendon stood up straighter, looking around and then beamed.
“Right over there!” he said, pointing. “Come on, you’re going to love their sandwiches, trust me!” Merry’s eyes went wide as Brendon grabbed her wrist and began pulling her to the café, the sight almost comical for various passerbies. The two of them quickly got inside the café, and thankfully, the line was rather short at the moment.
Brendon, trying to be a gentleman, let Merry go first. Eyeing the menu, Merry ordered a basic sandwich, soda, a salad, and an extra side of meat for Jinx when she got the chance to let him out of his Pokeball. Taking her number and drink, Merry quickly found a seat in the main lobby and looked around. For the most part, it was filled with people like her; middle class, normal people with normal lives. There was a T.V. high up in a corner where everyone could see it.
“Oh great, we didn’t miss it!” Brendon said happily as he sat down next to Merry, looking at the T.V. Merry tilted her head, confused.
“Miss what?”
Brendon snapped his head back to look at her, shocked. “….uhh, the opening matches of the Hoenn Pokémon League Challenge?” he said, pointing at the T.V. “Come on, didn’t you have the same thing in Johto?”
Merry sighed. “I quit watching that channel when I was eleven,” she told him. “I just got my interest in Pokémon battles back not even two weeks ago man.” Brendon fidgeted in his seat uncomfortably.
“Sorry,” he said shyly as Merry shook her head and watched the T.V.
“Hey Brendon, who is that guy stepping onto the field?”
Brendon glanced at the T.V. and did a double-take, falling out of his seat. “Holy shit!” he yelled out, drawing the attention of everyone in the café. “The Prince of Battle’s back!”
Faster than Merry could register, everyone was seemingly crowded at the T.V., the owner turning up the volume as loud as it could go as they all watched at the commentators themselves looked dumbstruck.
Merry was confused, and then she too recoiled in surprise as she recognized the man stepping forward to challenge the gym leader. “G?” she asked, incredulous.
“Welcome back folks to the opening matches of the Sixty-Eighth Annual Hoenn Pokémon League Challenge! I’m Geoff Rockman!” said one of the commentators, who Merry noted leaned away from his counterpart.
“And I’m Burnie Witwicky, here live at the Rustboro Stone Gym, where just moments ago, Roxanne Cullen was challenged by none other than the Knight of Indigo Plateau himself! That’s right folks, Hoenn’s very own native son, the Prince of Battle, has returned to reclaim his throne!”
Geoff grinned as he looked back and pointed at where G was. “Dang straight!” he exclaimed, bringing a chuckle to most of the patrons, including Brendon. “Now for those of you who’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of years, G Stewart, a native of the Fortree Province, first came into the battling scene six years ago, where he managed to pull a win with a team line up of Sceptile, Mightyena, Breloom, Wailord, and finally, a Growlithe. Now don’t get us wrong, Drake certainly gave him grief, but G pulled on through and grabbed the championship, making him the first rookie to do so in nearly twelve years!”
Burnie nodded as he looked at the camera. “And then he did what any other trainer would do. He went out to challenge all the other regions! And in less than a year and a half, G went on to reach the Indigo Plateau and challenge the Elite Four, only to offer his spot to a trainer who had been beaten earlier by a stupid, cheating –[BLEEEP]!”
Merry laughed as Geoff rolled his eyes on camera. “Anyhow,” the commentator continued, “G continued to travel the championship circuit, halfway finishing the Kalos League when he travelled to Unova, and well, we all know what happened there.”
Burnie nodded solemnly. “Yeah. And this is the first time that we’ve seen him in public for nearly two years, so, I’m really curious as to how he’s done as a trainer,” he stated as he and Geoff turned to the arena itself.
Merry watched, her eyes glued to the screen as she watched G casually stand on his end of the field, Roxanne at the other, completely serious. “Now both battlers have agreed on a level cap,” Geoff said as the camera focused on G, who put on a pair of earbuds and began bobbing his head to the beat of some kind of music. “And apparently, G is beginning the first part of his own personal strategy.”
“And what strategy is that?” Burnie asked as Roxanne glared at G, hands on her hips as G smirked playfully, pulling a Pokeball out from a back pocket.
“To confuse the opponent so much that they don’t know what to do,” Geoff said as Roxanne pulled out a Pokeball of her own. “Alright folks, the battlers are ready! The ref is down there, he’s given them the all clear, and Roxanne sends out a Golem, and holy dang, that sucker looks vicious!”
“True, but G doesn’t seem to be intimidated as he sends out… a Delphox?”
Merry, and the rest of café let a sound of surprise as Burnie kept on talking. “Okay, now normally I’m all for diversity, but sending in a fire-type for a rock fight isn’t something that I’d normally do.” The Delphox looked back at G, who smiled as he silently snapped his fingers.
If Merry had blinked, she would have missed the attack, and from the commentator’s cries, they felt the same way as the Delphox took its staff and slammed it into the ground, sending out shockwaves that threw the Golem’s delicate balance off. The bipedal fox then collected psychic energy at the tip of the staff, and shot it forward, slamming into the Golem dead center, sending it flying backwards into the wall.
“Hot [BLEEP], what an amazing start to a battle!” Geoff stated excitedly. “Delphox opens up with an Earthquake based attack, followed by a high power Psybeam! Already folks Golem’s stamina is in the yellow, and it does not look happy!” And indeed, the rock-like Pokémon looked pissed at how badly it had gotten beaten in the opening seconds of combat.
“Golem, Rock Tomb followed by Magnitude!” Roxanne ordered, pointing an angry finger at the Delphox. Merry watched with bated breath as the Golem slammed its foot into the ground, trapping the Delphox in a wall of stone; several shards came flying up from the sudden movement and pelted the fire-type hard, making it flinch only temporarily. The Golem seemed to grin as it raised its claws and smashed them into the ground.
The cameras were easily shaken as the attack occurred, only to catch a stone walled emplacement… with no sign of the Delphox. “Well, isn’t that something!” Burnie said as the camera swerved to catch the Delphox in the air, its staff spinning in the air as it gathered energy. “G has his Delphox jump out of the rock tomb and into the air, making Roxanne’s Magnitude attack miss by a mile!” His statement was punctuated by the staff hitting the Golem right on its head.
Merry glanced at the Golem’s stamina bar and was shocked to see that it was already in the red, and even then, it was almost out. “Whoa, this is intense,” she said to Brendon, who just nodded dumbly in agreement. The referee quickly halted the fighting, looking at each Pokémon.
“Golem is unable to battle any longer!” he declared, drawing a look of shock from Roxanne. “Round one goes to G Stewart! Ms. Cullen, select your next Pokémon!”
Roxanne angrily withdrew Golem and glared at G. “You think you’re so grand, don’t you?” she asked venomously as she pulled out a different Pokeball. “If I remember right, the last time you were here, you had a Lucario. Did it just decide you were a terrible trainer and run off?”
The Delphox looked like it had been punched in the gut as it flinched, looking at its trainer with worry. G slowly raised his head up, and he looked pissed. Merry felt an oppressive shudder of fear roll over her as she watched the T.V. G meanwhile pulled out a Pokeball and glared at Roxanne, beckoning for her to release hers first.
Smirking, thinking that she had finally thrown him off his game, Roxanne threw out the Pokeball, which burst open to release a Probopass. “Feeling lucky?” she taunted. In response, G held out his Pokeball and opened it up. A scant few seconds later, the viridian green form of a Sceptile stood in front of him, and every single viewer watched as he took his ear buds off, not once looking away from Roxanne.
“Ladies and gentlemen, I do think that Roxanne has hit a very delicate nerve with G,” Burnie stated, his former enthusiasm missing. Geoff nodded as he gulped.
“And I agree. It’s one thing to engage in banter, but this has certainly crossed the line,” the older commentator said as G pointed at the Probopass.
“Sceptile, Leaf Blade.”
The leaves on Sceptiles arms glowed brilliantly for a second, and Merry’s eyes widened in surprise as the Sceptile’s form flickered for just a moment, a trail of light suddenly connecting it and the Probopass together before fading just as fast.
All was still in the gym.
Breathes were held everywhere else.
When it seemed like nothing had happened, Roxanne began laughing. “Seriously? That’s it?” she asked hautily as the brunette cocked her head arrogantly. Merry however narrowed her eyes. Leaf Blade was a physical move; an energy based one, yes, but still a physical attack. And if it had connected like Merry thought it did, then the Probopass….
Almost as if on cue, a small cloud of rock particles fell off the Probopass, with the Pokémon following suit seconds later as the stamina bar on the display flashed red once and went dark. Roxanne, and by extension, everyone watching, felt her jaw drop in shock as she looked into the cold face of G. “H-How….?” She asked, trembling. G crossed his arms as Sceptile waddled over to his side.
G simply glared at her. “…They don’t teach humility at Rustboro Institute, do they?” he asked callously as he wordlessly recalled Sceptile. “Because I don’t recall your predecessor being that rude towards his opponent.”
“And G rips Roxanne a new one as the referee reviews the battle footage,” Geoff commented as he looked down at the trainers. “I have to say, it’s not pretty. Wait a moment, the ref has come to a decision!”
The ref stood in the middle of the field, about to make an announcement. “After reviewing the footage, the actions taken by Sceptile fall within official League rules! Therefor, Sceptile wins the match, and the battle goes to G Stewart of Fortree!”
Merry had to clamp her hands over her ears as the entire café erupted into wild cheers, Brendon jumping out of his chair in excitement. “Woah!” he cried out, looking at Merry in glee. “You saw that right?!” Merry nodded slowly, her ears still ringing slightly.
“Yeah, well, I saw,” she commented dryly. “Doesn’t mean I could hear all that well.” Brendon at least had the dignity to look sheepishly away at her not-quite-subtle reprimand and sat back down in his chair.
“Sorry,” he said, fidgeting in his seat. “It’s just that, well, come on! Most Hoenn kids want to be like him!”
Merry gave him a pointed look. “Okay, but,” she interjected, “He practically flew off the handle when Roxanne insulted him. And people want their kids to think that that is acceptable behavior?” Brendon groaned.
“Of course not!” the teen stated. “Which is why parents and most people would have the common sense to tell those kids that it is not cool to blow your top at the first little insult someone throws at you!”
Merry rolled her eyes. “Okay, but still, you’d think that as a professional, G would be a bit more thick skinned.”
Brendon shrugged. “Well, maybe he had to trade his Lucario away?” he suggested. Merry crossed her arms, head shaking.
“He doesn’t seem the type,” she told him, just as their food came to them. Feeling just how empty her stomach was, Merry devoured her food, enjoying the flavors bursting in her mouth. A few minutes later, the teens finished eating. “So, what do you plan on doing?” Merry asked Brendon as he took a sip of his soda.
The boy shrugged. “Dunno,” he answered. “I’m thinking about going to Mauville. The Underpass near there has a lot of Pokémon I haven’t studied before, so it’ll be something to write home about. What about you? What are your plans?”
Merry looked at the T.V., where it showing yet another match at the gym. “I… I might try the League Challenge,” she said. “I mean, it’s not like I really have anything better to do, right?” Brendon beamed at her.
“Cool! You can totally use Treeko to do a clean sweep of the gym!” he told her. “Most beginning trainers are stuck with Poochyena, Zigzagoon, you know, all the common Pokémon! You already have the advantage with Treeko, so it’ll be a piece of cake!” Merry grimaced.
“Yeah, but come on, isn’t that like cheating?”
Brendon shook his head. “Nope. Just don’t be an ass about it, and I think you’ll do fine,” he told her. Merry looked at him uneasily.
“Okay, but it’s going to have to wait until after I get Rosie and Treeko out of the Pokémon Center,” she said, fidgeting. Brendon nodded in understanding.
“Okay,” he said. “Umm, see you at the gym then in about an hour or two?”
“Sure thing,” Merry said in reply. Soon, the two of them went their separate ways. Merry headed back to the closest park that she could find and sat down on a bench. Pulling out Jinx’s Pokeball, she called out the Umbreon. “Hey there Jinx,” she said with a smile.
“Bre, bre!” Jinx replied to her, jumping up to the bench seat to be right beside his mate. Merry giggled as she pulled out the food she had gotten Jinx.
“Got you something,” she told him, opening the box. “Thought you might be bored with all the freeze dried stuff I’ve been giving you guys.” Jinx beamed up at her as he shoved his head into the box, happily eating the contents. Merry silently stroked the Pokémon’s back as he ate, thinking to herself. “Hey Jinx.”
“Bre?” Jinx asked as he looked up at his mate, cheeks stuffed full of what looked like turkey. Merry fidgeted.
“How do you feel about going to a gym battle?” Merry asked hesitantly. She waited for a response, only to get forty pounds of Umbreon jumping on her, licking her face in joy.
“Bre bre, umbre, Umbreon!” Jinx cried out as he nuzzled her. Merry beamed at the cries of her mate.
“Okay, so, I take that as a yes then?” she asked teasingly. Jinx purred in content, his meal forgotten. “Okay then, well, we’re going to have to go and get Treeko and Rosie first, and then we go to the gym. Okay?”
“Bre!”
Merry leaned back in the bench and continued petting her Pokémon as he resumed eating his meal, the male’s crimson eyes never leaving hers.

Brendon Birch was nervous. Granted, the seventeen year old future Pokémon researcher had a lot on his plate already, but he was nervous as hell. Namely, he had a crush.
It didn’t help much that to him, Meredith Walker was absolutely beautiful. He had recently developed a thing for brunettes, and those eyes… damn, he felt that he could stare into those eyes forever. Brendon sighed. But unfortunately for him, he didn’t really know much about her other than she was from Johto, and that she had only recently began training Pokémon.
Brendon leaned back on the rail, looking at the Rustboro Stone Gym. There were a lot of people there, but thankfully, the line of new challengers was shorter than he expected. Brendon looked down at his wrist watch, tapping his foot lightly on the pavement. At this rate, Merry might lose any chance of actually going into the gym today.
“Hey Brendon!”
“Gya!!” Brendon cried out, surprised at the sudden appearance of Merry. “How do you do that?!” he asked her, confused.
“Do what?” she replied, cocking her head to the side. Brendon wildly gestured at her.
“That… sneaking thing you do!” he exclaimed. “I mean come on, you stealthily clock me in the head with a Pokeball-“
“It was an accident!” Merry cried out as he continued.
“And I swear, you just snuck up on me just to see me jump! What are you, part ninja?”
Merry smirked as she strode over to the line. “Well, I did get to meet Koga Murakami when I was nine,” she told him, “Part of a summer camp trip.” Stepping into the line, Merry waited patiently for the line to move into the gym. Thankfully, she didn’t have to wait long as people not that much younger than her all filed out of the building, heads slumped low in defeat. Soon, she and Brendon reached the front of the line.
“Name?” asked the receptionist without looking.
“Meredith Walker,” Merry said confidently.
“You have your pass?”
Everything came to a screeching halt as Brendon’s eyes widened. Since when in the hell did a trainer need a pass to battle a gym leader?!
“P-Pass?” Merry asked, her confidence now running clear out of town. The receptionist finally looked up.
“Look, do you have a pass or not?”
Merry shook her head.
“Well then, you’ll need an endorsement from a recognized Pokémon trainer of acceptable standing in the Hoenn Pokémon League and its affiliates,” she said in monotone. “Now do you know anyone who can endorse you?”
Merry hung her head low, and Brendon was about to freak out when someone spoke up from behind them. “I’ll endorse her.”
The two teens turned around and gaped as G stood there, smiling. The receptionist paled as she scrambled to search through paperwork. “Mr. Stewart! Uh, umm, didn’t you just finish a match a little while ago, umm-“
“Ma’am, all I need is the form for the endorsement of Meredith Walker for her challenge of the Pokémon League, I believe the one you’re looking for is W1240 dash B One,” G explained calmly, as Brendon’s brain shorted out.
Merry hunched into herself as she looked at G. “G? What are you doing here?” The older trainer looked at her as the receptionist quickly went to grab the appropriate paperwork.
“Here to challenge the League, why?” he asked her before Brendon finally recovered his senses. Merry shook her head.
“No, I mean, why are you here at this desk?” she clarified. “I mean, aren’t you a little too famous to help kids like me out?” G snorted as the receptionist handed him a piece of paper and quickly began filling it out.
“Hey, I was a rookie too you know,” he said. “I just like helping people out. Okay, that’s filled out, I sign here, and the one grand can come out of pocket for now… okay Miss Walker, you’re all set!” he added, handing back the paper to the receptionist with a flourish. “I look forward to seeing your match up in the stands.” Preparing to walk away, he finally noticed Brendon. “Oh? And you are?”
Brendon gulped. “Umm, I’m B-brendon Birch sir,” he said shakily. “Big fan of yours!” G smiled good-naturedly as he nodded to the teen.
“Pleased to meet you then, younger Birch tree,” he said with a snicker. “How’s your old man anyway? I haven’t spoken to him in… five, six years at this point.” Brendon straightened up a bit at this point.
“My dad? He’s okay I guess,” he replied. “He’s writing a thesis on the effects of climate change on a Pokémon population at the regional level. I kind of help out, but I’m more into the behavioral sciences myself.”
At the same time, Merry had gotten her pass to the gym, and took a breath to calm her nerves. “Umm, guys?” she asked, bringing both males attention to her. “Umm,… wish me luck?” she said, shrugging shyly.
Brendon smiled widely at her. “Hey, you’ll do great!” he said, forgetting about G who quietly slipped away to give the two of them a moment. “You have Treeko to help you out, remember?”
Merry nodded silently as Brendon hugged her. “Well, thanks for the support,” she said. “Well, I guess this is it.”
Brendon let go of her and nodded, now looking about as normal as a Magikarp with legs. “Yeah, umm, good luck in there,” he said. Merry smiled at him and opened the door to the gym, heading inside.
Brendon slumped over and sighed.
“….dammit, did it again.”

Holy shit, this took forever to write. I’ve just recently gotten a job, and between the crazy hours, and other things, I’ve had little chance to actually work on this story. But no need to fear, I have plenty more in stock for you all! ….As soon as I finish the gym battle next chapter. Oh well, we can’t all be perfect.
