Sweet as Sugar
Chapter Seven
Beside you, your grandparents said all the right things to the detectives and caseworkers present in the room. You released a breath that you didn't know that you had been holding as a sense of relief filled your body. Finally you had your passport back. It had seemed to take the government far too long to put your request through though in reality it hadn't been very long at all. It was just that you hadn't had very much to fill your days with other than Honey and Mori's visits. You couldn't wait to get out of the country so you could (figuratively) let your hair down.
"We would appreciate if you stayed in town while the investigation continues."
The lead detective's words caught your full attention. Did he just say that they wanted you and your grandparent to stay in town? Why? What was the point? The fire had already been labeled as arsonry. Everyone knew that there was some sicko out there who had gotten off on lighting that fire and burning priceless items, endangering multiple lives. You nor your grandparents had seen who had set the fire. So how could the police hope that you could assist to solve the crime?
"Excuse me, detective, but how can I be of use to your investigation? I already gave my statement and I'm afraid that I don't know anything more about the situation."
You spoke up as politely as you were able to given the situation. The level of courtesy in your speech didn't stop your grandfather's displeased frown. As much of one as he would show in this situation.
"We are still trying to figure out the motive, miss. It may not be safe for you or your respected grandparents to travel at this time."
Did the think that whoever lit all your stuff on fire was going to fly over with you on the plane or something? You tried to mentally place that question into their heads because you couldn't ask it aloud without seeming rude. Unfortunately out of your many talents, telepathy was not one of them. You would have been out of Japan if that was the case.
After what felt like eternity you were finally free from the detective's' office area. Of course that didn't mean you were free entirely. You still had to journey back through the city with your grandparents in one of the smaller limos. Even after taking your set the tension didn't disappear. If anything the silence let it fester some more.
"Do you believe that the person responsible will be caught quickly?"
Your grandmother spoke up to answer your question quietly. "We must trust them to do their jobs."
That wasn't exactly an answer to the question you asked but you got the meaning well enough. They were fed up with your impatience to leave the country. Especially seeing as you were currently their only grandchild. They had pretty much written your father and mother off as inheriting the hotel business seeing as they were rarely in Japan. Your grandparents weren't affectionate but you knew that they still cared. Which was why all the pressure was placed on you.
"There are other matters to discuss," your grandfather spoke after the limo started moving.
"What kind of matters?" You were apparently the only one who didn't know. Your grandmother even seemed to be smiling.
"We have received a marriage offer for you."
If you had been drinking anything there might have been a mess. Or at least a hard swallow. You stared at him with an incredulous look on your face and with good reason. You were only seventeen years old. Even in Japan the average woman didn't worry about that sort of thing until after they were twenty years old. Or so you had heard. Though in ouran it seemed to be a little more common to be engaged to another person before graduating. You supposed it all traced back to the perceived concept of bloodlines.
"I think I'm a little young to worry about marriage," you tried to state politely. "I would not make a very good wife until after I've graduated with a degree surely."
It was kind of like a line of defense in your case. You were do to inherit their businesses but with that came the responsibility to run them efficiently. You could learn how to do that by way of apprenticeship but it was common to get a relevant degree first now a days. At least that's what you had been lead to believe for years. You were going to cling to that idea at least. There was little doubt that whomever proposed the union was an associate of your grandparents. Which instantly put them around the age of 30 in your head and...movie stars and models who never seemed to age aside...that did not seem like a pleasant situation to you.
"You would be wed in name only," your grandfather said in an understanding tone. "I'm told the young man fully intends to attend college as well."
It felt far too real. This couldn't be happening. You couldn't be sitting in the limo with your grandparents after being told to stay in the country talking about marriage.
"You may have met him already. He attends Ouran High School," your grandmother spoke with a small smile.
So it wasn't a 30 year old man. It was someone around your age. That made it a little more tolerable of an idea to swallow. But still…
Wait…
"Does it have anything to do with Haninozuka?" You asked as the idea struck you like lightning.
He wouldn't take the proposed game so far. Would he? You hoped not. Your grandparents would be furious at you for the shame that this act would bring the family if it was just a joke.
"Haninozuka?" The surprise in your grandfather's voice let you know that Honey wasn't involved. "Where did you get the idea that the offer was from them?"
You shifted uneasily in your seat as the limo made a turn. You could feel both of your grandparents' gazes on you and it was hard not to fidget.
"It was a game he proposed, all in good fun. Nothing serious happened, nothing happened at all," you tried to alleviate some of the judgement that you knew would befall you if you didn't explain. "Haninozuka is still a child at heart. He probably just thought calling me his wife would be amusing."
"I see. You will need to correct him. We won't have any scandal emerging from this," your grandmother was a very logical and proper lady. Which was probably how she and your grandfather functioned so well despite cultural differences at the start.
"I will tell him," you said quietly.
You had no idea how you were going to bring that up.
"Good. We do not want to offend the Ootori family."
...Kyoya?
