May woke up feeling awful. The smell of food and coffee were enticing, but she closed her eyes against the sliver of light that snuck through the curtains.
She heard a voice talking to someone.
"... agreed. You said your self that you did not know if there were any more dangers to be found. As it stands, I am unable to properly fend for myself. If people knew who I really am... well I dare not think of that now."
May sat up. A note sat beside the room service tray on her side of the bed. She tried to focus on it, but instead let her ears pick up the hushed conversation.
"Yes, yes, I recieved your gift. It was the only reason I stayed in this town. After the call I had recieved at the pokecenter I just could not ignore you." Shade growled. "I really wish you wouldn't bring them up. I know I am my father's daughter! I know that his enemies are mine! My best defense is me being kept secret. From now on, please do not use my real name. Besides, I prefer Shade. At least out here." There was a pause. "I miss you too. I shall try and be home soon. No more favors, please, I need to make it on my own. Like a regular person. Mistakes and all." She kissed the phone, or at least made a kissing sound, May didn't look to see. "I love you!" She ended happily.
May heard the door open and close. After a short time sitting there she concluded that Shade was not coming back. Briefly she thought about if it was a good idea to let her go or maybe she should run after her new friend.
She lifted the note, it ended up being an envelope. She saw weird symbols across the front then the name Shade written in cursive below it. Added to the envelope was a less elaborate but easily read "For May".
The card was short. "Sorry. I need to go. I'd have stayed but work... is a bad excuse. Honestly, I am not who you think. Sorry I won't be there to see if you would like to practice again. I leave you with a small token of friendship. Eat, drink some coffee, feel better soon." There was a small heart at the end.
Also in the envelope was a small charm bracelet. A pokeball, a heart, an Eevee and an inscription indicating "A's Jewelers of Jhoto".
May didn't know what to feel.
Relieved that she didn't have to be sober and turn Shade down.
Disappointed that she didn't get to kiss her again. A new feeling that she was unsure of.
Worried, after hearing what she had heard the older girl talkijg about. Why was she worried? Shade was friendly, fun, intelligent, and hadn't taken advantage of her.
Shade also didn't seem like a person on the up and up. After all, at dinner May watched the girl pick pockets for fun, of course Shade returned them to their owners. Yet she had that skill.
She lifted the cover off of her meal to be greeted with the sight of a continental breakfast, with double order of bacon.
Shade's POV
Shade swung by the boys' room. Picked up Gertrude and Broken. Ash was still asleep so he wasn't there to help when Brock latched onto her leg amd begged her to stay. Only when she told him her real age did he pause and consider his actions. She was able to slip away.
Shade had stopped long enough to pay for the group to have another night stay, mostly for May, then left.
As they walked Shade gave Gertrude a ring and Broken a medallion. "We're helping drum up business for a jewler, got to show it off. Shade slipped on her own ring and a jeweled pin shaped like a Meowth.

"Dayton's Machoke VS. Shade's Gertrude!"
Shade rolled her eyes. The little punk with the nasal voice always seemed to be announcing these battles. They were not League sanctioned but it was better to bet a certain ammount than automatically lose half should one lose.
Today she was betting enough to cover her rent. The small hut looking place outside of the city. Broken held the money and Shade stood in the trainer's booth.
Watching as Gertrude sized up the Machoke.
They had seen him fight the other day amd his shadow punch had taken down a few psychics.
Of course, Gertrude, having trained with Broken, was becoming quite the fighter. They all three were enrolled at a Karate school, and once they quit laughing about Gertrude joining, Shade paid for a full month in advance.
They were nearing the end of the month, and Gertrude was already a yellow belt.
"It's just a Ralts, Machoke!" Came Dayton's voice. "Make this quick!"
The bell rang.
Gertrude fell back on Teleport. The opponent thought the little psychic had run off, started to raise his hands in victory, only to have Gertrude appear at head level and kick him in the face. It didn't do much but surprise him, but she was gone again in a flash and then back, right behind him with a karate chop.
Several more variants of teleport and strike were used.
Then he got lucky and sent Gertrude across the ring and into the safety glass. Where she slid down like she was a cartoon.
She was up before she could be counted out, and after wiping some blood from her lip she let loose with a powerful blast of psychic energy. The Telekenisis knocking the Machoke against the safety glass on his side of the ring. Gertrude hit him a second time for good measure before she was let out of the ring.
Shade just took the winnings before the doors burst open.
"Raid!" That voice annoyed her to no end.
Still, they had to get out of there. Broken was recalled to his ball and Shade linked arms with Gertrude.
In a blink, they stood in the hut.
"Sleeping again?" Shade slapped her roommates ass, eliciting an annoyed and sleepy groan from her.
"Got the rent!" Shade said happily.
She tossed the cash on the table then looked around.
"Why is everything packed up?"
"Bak figured out how we were paying the rent."
"So?" Shade sat down.
"He kind of doesn't like being paid with the money he had lost." The woman rolled over and eyed Shade. "Can I borrow some money? I think I want to go home."
Shade slid the winnings over to her. "Don't forget me." Shade gave the woman a quick kiss then started finding her few small cases.
"Shade, I don't think I'll ever forget you." She stood and left the room for a bit. When she returned, she draped something over the younger trainer's shoulders. "I know you don't wear them, but, it's all I really have to give you." Shade heard the spark of a lighter. "The truck is here." Sure enough, the engine could be heard outside.
"Bye, Cassidy." Shade let Broken out of his ball. The fighting type pokemon happily helped load Cassidy's stuff into the truck. There were a few more hugs, Gertrude and Broken each getting one as well. Then, the group watched their friend ride off. "I can't even remember how we met her." Shade said sadly.
"Or all of what we did." Gertrude looked over her few rings. A few were possibly stolen but she had liked the woman. To the point that even Gertrude had no problems with running small scams and get rich quick schemes. At least Cassidy had them targeting other criminals and not average people.
"We need to learn to behave again." Shade chuckled.
Broken picked up the two larger cases and Gertrude took up a purse. Shade slipped the jacket on and then grabbed the back pack.
"Let's check out some things. Maybe we can get a job somewhere."
"Or go back to the wild." Broken mentioned after Shade.
'Not until our classes at the Dojo are used up." Broken looked at her. "What? I paid for it, we're using it."
That afternoon, Shade sat in the park with a shoe shine sign. Business was going good until an officer strolled up.
"Permit?" He asked.
Shade smiled. "Oh yeah! I got a permit right here." She reached into her pocket and pulled out her empty hand. Middle finger up. "If I had money I wouldn't be doing this, you fucking idiot!"
Shade watched from behind the bars as her ninety three dollard was counted out meticulously.
"I don't know why you didn't fight battles like other trainers."
"Gertrude had a long night and Broken isn't feeling well. I won't have them fight like that!" Shade crossed her arms.
"Did you really have to flip off Officer Dayton?"
"I'd tell you why, but you wouldn't believe me." Shade answered. "Though I must say that I did need to do that."
"Now about this." The officer held up the jacket. The big R in red across the front, divided in half by the open state the garment was in. "Where did you get it?"
"A friend. Think she got it at a thrift shop. She was always hitting those places up. Always going on about Kanto too. I really need to go visit some day." She peered over at the calendar. "How long am I in for? I have a karate class at five."
The guard's laughing let her know it wasn't today.

"So you have been staying at the dojo?" Shade slipped on her jacket.
"Yeah." Broken looked groggy.
"You feeling okay?" Shade put a hand to his head. "Fever's gone." She said.
"Gertrude's a crybaby. Every night you were in there. Plus, I was elected to help train the kids." He yawned. "Apparently we fighting types have a knack for that." He fished some bills out of the satchel he was toting around.
"Wow! What is that for?"
"Mr. Ken said he'd pay me for advertising. Have to carry this around though." He shook the satchel.
"That's a good idea."
At the dojo Shade fixed up a few light fixtures. Mostly to have something to do. The owner was already telling his sister about someone he had found to fix her place up. He stuck his head into the room. "Shade, how old are you?"
"I don't know. Eleven or twelve."
"You don't know how old you are?"
"I took off when I was four or five. I don't even remember my birthday." She was sitting with Gertrude in her lap. Broken slept on a stack of matts, Shade's feet resting on his legs. She was feeling comfortable and sleepy so she didn't realize what she was saying.
"You, ran... away." Shade nodded yes in answer. "Why?"
"Father killed Mother." She turned her head when she heard a sniffle after a bit. "What?"
"That's so sad!" He brought the phone up to his ear. "Mitsuki, I think I have found someone to help with the renovations."

Shade made her way through the alley. The house was close by. The map said so.
"Hey, Cutie!"
"Shade, don't stop!"
"Hey! Girl!"
"Just keep moving!"
"I know, Gertrude."
Shade had heard about this alley from some of the poor kids she encountered earlier. Apparently they would come here to provide "services" in exchange for money.
Shade dumped two thirds of her savings into those girls arms.
The youngest was younger than her. The eldest was just a bit older, maybe just by a few months.
"Girl! I got fifty, fifty for whatever I want!"
"I'm not homeless, dumbass! I'm lost."
Shade felt herself jerked backwards with the last of those words.
"Who you calling dumbass you little whore?"
Shade felt her bag tugged from her arms and then she was thrown into Gertrude. The psychic badly dazed could only watch as the man gripped Shade's arms and crawled on top of her. He searched her pockets, taking the money she had. He tried to kiss her but she bit him, drawing blood. Shade was backhanded. "Feisty!" He laighed.
There was a glowing from the side as Shade struggled. His hands, one sliding up under her shirt and another pulling her shorts down.
Suddenly the man was being lifted. He was no longer trying to get into her clothes, he was trying to pull himself down. His finger tips had just slipped from her shirt and he went into the fence on the side of the alley.
Shade pulled her short up and headed for her attacker. He was dazed looking up at her. She gave him a kick then took her money from his pocket.
"Hold it right there!" A voice called as a light shone upon her.
She turned to Gertrude to see a Kirlia. She smiled briefly before she was tackled by a female officer.

"This is your second arrest. This time it is big!" The officer sitting axross the desk from her said with a smile. "My first big bust, assault and robbery! A member of a known criminal organization at that!"
"I was assaulted. That man tried to do things to me!"
"Stop lying!" The officer shoved a file her way. "Suspected of running street scams and finally busted for working without a permit. Now, we finally have proof of the big stuff!"
"Stupid rookie!" She mumbled.
"What was that?"
"If I could prove that money was mine, would you listen to my story?" Shade leaned across the desk. "I am entitled to a fair investigation!"
"Why would I do that?"
"When that fat ass you let go hurts someone else in the alley you'll look like a stupid rookie. Better to cover your ass. Ome mistake on my part and a bunch of blurry pictures that are supposed to be me hardly mean I am a criminal, after all."
Thirty minutes later in the evidence room Officer Tomiko frowned. Several bills all marked with a stamp from Tamaki Dojo were in the center of the roll along with a number and address for a house in the city.
She had made a quick call and the man from the alley couldn't tell her one detail about what was on the money.
This also meant that she had let a man leave with someone's satchel.
Shade finally reached Ms. Tamaki's home by seven am.
Gertrude was sleeping in her ball to avoid attacking the officers and Broken was blissfully unaware.
Once the police cruiser drove off Shade woke up Gertrude.
"I love you!" She told the Kirlia. "From adorable and cute to adorable and well you have always been beautiful!"
"Are you okay?"
"I'm fine." Shade held Gertrude at arms length. "I might have a job lined up after this. Remember that guy, Stalls? He showed his boss those balls I fixed up and told him about that TM I repaired."
"I don't like Stalls." Gertrude replied.
"Neither do I, but let's face it, until we get something going, we can't live like we like. Imagine actually owming the property we're on!"
Gertrude smiled. "That sounds nice." She sighed. "But why not get the money from..."
Shade put a finger to her lips. "You know why." She said sadly. "Bad enough getting it for little things."
