Chapter 70
Call Me Daddy
Natsu and Gray were returning from a mission, talking loudly about the fight and something Erza did that almost got them all into trouble. They were laughing, Natsu was mimicking out the scene, slashing the air with a pretend sword, with Happy miming the role of the monster.
Just as they were all coming up to Gray's apartment, they saw a person standing there, obviously having been waiting for a long time. As they drew closer and she straightened up, Natsu saw that it was the same woman from Hargeon, with bobbed auburn hair, hazel eyes, and a light dusting of freckles on her thin face.
"Who is she, really?" Natsu asked suspiciously.
Gray did not walk closer. He stared, not so much at the woman, but more at a baby in a sling wrapped around her. He had a bad feeling about this.
"Natsu, maybe you should go back home. She looks like she needs to talk."
Natsu eyed the young woman, and a dark feeling of jealousy crept into his heart. He hated that instinctive feeling. He wondered why there was a bulky cloth draped around her, but then he smelled the distinct scent of diapers. He inhaled just a little harder, and his eyes shot over to Gray. The ice wizard was petrified, barely breathing, as he stared forward.
"Sure," he said, slowly backing away. "Come on, Happy." He turned to go but looked back in worry. "I'll see you tomorrow at the guild," he added, and he gave the woman one last look.
Gray muttered, "Yeah" without realizing Natsu had already turned to go. Footsteps faded away, and finally Gray cautiously came closer to the woman.
Gorgeous beyond dreams, wild and flirty: that was how he had remembered her. Her looks had changed. Her auburn hair was now cut short, she had lost weight and had a weary, haggard gauntness to her face, yet she still had hazel eyes that shifted colors like an autumn forest.
She smiled sadly. "Hello again, Gray. We didn't have much time to talk in Hargeon. I apologize for bothering you here at home."
"It's been a long time," he said softly. He recalled, he had taken her home, both of them drunk and horny. It was amazing that she remembered where he lived.
She bit her lip nervously. "You don't actually remember me, do you?"
Gray gulped. He remembered … sort of. A face, a few alcohol-hazed memories of passion, but nothing else. She had been just a hookup, two people who wanted a night of excitement and got what they sought, leaving the next morning with not even a promise to see one another again.
"We … had a night together," he said awkwardly.
She blushed and turned her face aside. "That's one way to put it."
Gray let out a breath he had been holding. He needed to be honestly with her. "I'm sorry, I never got your name."
"Emilia. I figured, after almost two years, you wouldn't have remembered anyway. It was only one night, after all."
Almost two years! He had been indiscriminate in sleeping around back then and never bothered with remembering names. He looked down at the baby.
"Yours? Do you have a family now?" His voice quivered as one of his worst fears, one he thought was impossible, made him tremble.
She shifted the sling to show the baby's face. "Yes … we do."
Gray's heart made a leap, and he lost all air in his lungs as if someone had punched him. "We?" he whispered, not wanting to believe it.
"Gray," Emilia said, looking reluctant to speak now. "I want you to meet … our son."
He grabbed hold of the wall, leaning against it for support as he felt the world spinning out of control. He shook his head.
No, this can't be happening.
His eyes grew foggy as he felt like he might pass out, but he looked down at a pale, pudgy baby with a tuft of black hair. He covered his mouth as he began to hyperventilate and his ears seemed to scream with a siren's wail.
"Oh … God," he whispered.
The child yawned, opened its eyes, and gazed up at him. Gray stared down, right into droopy, stormy blue eyes.
Those were his eyes!
Gray shook his head. No! No, this can't be happening. NO!
Emilia bit her lip as she watched his reaction. She pulled the baby close to her again and stroked his head, as if to shield him from the anxiety. Then she glanced around at the apartment hallway.
"Can we talk inside?"
He nodded. He needed to get inside, because he was pretty sure he was about to collapse with the racing of his heart. He fumbled for his keys, dropped them, leaned to pick them up, and Gray suddenly tumbled over, collapsing into a pile on the ground.
"Gray!" Emilia cried out in concern.
He stayed there, sitting at an awkward angle, grasping at the hallway's cheap carpet and struggling to find air.
No! Impossible! Shit, no! This can't be…
He looked down the hall. Natsu was gone. He was all on his own for this one, and Gray felt like he might not be able to handle it alone.
"Gray?" Emilia asked in concern. "I know it must be a shock. I wasn't going to tell you at all." She looked down tenderly at the baby in her arms. "I honestly wasn't sure whose baby it was at first, but then … things began to happen. Weird things. The doctor sent me to a specialist. He's got magic. Strong magic! You're the only wizard I've ever slept with. Also … well…"
"He looks like me," Gray said hollowly. "Shit."
She pulled back with an agonized face. "I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have come."
"No." He struggled up to his feet and looked down at her. "No, you have nothing to be sorry about. I remember that night. I was drunk, I didn't use protection, I … Fuck." He grabbed the wall again as a wave of dizziness hit him.
A year ago, he had been upset because he thought the unprotected sex of that one night was what gave him gonorrhea. He never imagined it might have caused worse damage to his life.
She reached out and held his shoulder. "Let's go inside and sit. I can make you tea. Sit and … and try to take this in."
Gray nodded, unable to think anymore. He unlocked the door, walked in, and immediately threw off his shirt. He collapsed onto the couch, slumped over, and his hands clawed at his scalp.
This couldn't be happening! Not when he and Natsu were finally on such a positive path.
He lost track of time until Emilia held a teacup out to him. Gray stared at it. His mind was so lost, it took him a moment to realize what this was for. He muttered a thanks and sipped the tea, although he really felt like he needed strong whiskey.
"Are you … um … seeing anyone?" she asked timidly.
Gray nodded, still too numb to talk.
"That's fine. She doesn't have to worry. I'm not going to make some outrageous demand like wanting to marry you."
Gray set his teacup down with a hard clatter. Shit! Marriage? Then again, perhaps some women would have made that sort of demand, since this was his son.
Oh shit, I'm a father!
"Gray?"
His hand was over his mouth. For a moment, he really thought he would throw up. "S-Sorry. Shit, I'm so sorry I put you through that."
"No, it was my choice to keep the baby. I was going to raise him alone. I'm best on my own anyway, and I had a good career. However, the employer realized that I was an unmarried mother, and so when I requested maternity leave, he fired me instead, said my work performance was too poor lately. That might have been true. The morning sickness was awful."
"So, you're unemployed?" He recalled in Hargeon, she had mentioned she was looking for work.
She nodded solemnly. "I've been searching for a new job, but it's not easy. I can't bring him with me. I can't always get the supplies he needs. Diapers are expensive…"
"You need child support," he said bluntly.
Her face twisted up. "N-No! You don't need to, Gray. I'm not asking for it."
"He's mine though, right?" He looked up at her, wishing she would burst into laughs, point her finger, and say 'You should have seen your face!' Instead, the young woman looked scared and miserable.
"Yes," she whispered again, and her eyes turned aside, barely able to look at him. "I am so, so sorry. I didn't want to do this. I didn't want you to get involved, but in Hargeon, I had just been turned down for three jobs. I … I can't find work," she cried out, fighting not to succumb to her tears. "I don't want you to do anything for me, I won't be one of those women, but … if just for a little while, until I find a job … maybe just food and diapers? I'm truly so sorry."
Gray nodded to himself. Child support made sense if it was his kid.
Fuck, I have a kid!
He needed to take responsibility like a proper father.
I can't be a father! I know nothing about being a dad.
He needed to be mature about this issue. This woman came to him in desperate need, and it was obvious she felt awkward about getting him involved.
I might have gone my whole life never knowing I had a son. A son! Oh fuck … I'm a dad. No! I can't be a father. This is a nightmare. Shit, just let me wake up. Natsu, snore loudly, steal the covers, something, just wake me up.
"How much do you need for the week?"
Emilia looked both relieved and heartbroken. "Ten thousand Jewels? That will get baby food, diapers, and he's starting to outgrow his clothes already. He needs new socks."
"What about for yourself?"
"Me…? No! No, I'm fine," she said, although the way she flinched, Gray could see that she was lying.
He went to his bedroom where he kept a stash of money in a safe. He took out just a bit, but then he remembered what Natsu did in Hargeon, putting his own money in to help her because he could hear her stomach growling. With determination, Gray pulled out even more bills and stacked them up. He returned to the living room and handed her the money. She took it, and her mouth dropped.
"Fifty thousand Jewels?" she said in awe.
"Get something for yourself. A dress that fits can help you with job interviews." He saw her shaking her head in disbelief, so he assured her, "It's my gift to you. After all you've been through, you deserve a little splurge."
Tears came to her eyes as she took the money and put it in the massive bag that also held diapers and children's toys. "Thank you. Gray, you … you were a sweet and really handsome man back then," she said, blushing as she remembered that one night, "but now, you're a truly incredible gentleman." She reached her arms out. "May I give you a hug?"
Gray froze up. The last time he was this close to this woman, the smell of whiskey was thick in the air and her moans filled the apartment. Now, he stood stiffly as he nodded his consent, and she gently embraced him, leaning her cheek against his chest.
"Thank you," she whispered, warm relief softening her voice. "And I'm so sorry."
He heard her voice trembling, and he finally returned the embrace. She must have been through a lot over the past two years. She was drastically thinner, and her shoulders felt bony. Between them was the baby in a sling, pressed up against Gray's chest. Gray looked down at the baby, and his mind went blank.
Black hair, pale skin, and those stormy blue, slightly droopy eyes gazed up at him. His eyes! There was no doubting it, not even a little. This baby looked exactly like Gray.
"I'm sorry," she whispered again, as if regretting that she had ever thought to keep Gray out of this child's life.
Then Emilia pulled back, her eyelids and nose ruddy, but she had managed not to cry. Still, she wiped her runny nose and rubbed her cheeks, trying to pull herself together. Gray could only watch as she straightened up, so tall, proud, and independent. Maybe that was what he had found attractive in her back then: she was a woman who took care of herself. Even the night they shared, she had taken charge, riding him and taking her pleasure with self-assurance. It made him realize that she was not the sort of person to ask for aid lightly.
"Do you think you could watch him while I go shopping?" she asked. "It would be a huge help."
Gray pulled back and held his hands up. "Whoa, I seriously know nothing about babies."
She tittered. "Sorry. I guess that was asking a lot. Plus you're still in shock. I should let you be for now. Could I come back later, though? I really do need a little aid. I'm not going to demand child support until he's an adult or anything, but … just until I get a new job. Then we can both be out of your life."
"Y-Yeah," he said, still stunned, but he kept looking at the baby. Out of his life? Somehow, that stung him deep inside. "Um, I'm free for the next week. It's probably easiest to find me at the Fairy Tail guild, just in case I get called away on a mission. They'll know where I am, at least."
"Thank you. Now, I'll leave." She looked down at the baby and chuckled. "I think he's wet and needs a changing. I won't bother you with doing that here. I've done enough. I truly am sorry, Gray."
"No, I … I'm glad," he admitted, although his mind was still jumbled. "I mean … I have a son. That's a shock … a big shock … but I'm glad I know. I would definitely want to know something this serious. I'm … I'm glad you told me." He blinked his eyes as he felt dizzy again. "And I'll do what I can to help you out of this rough spot. Maybe I can help you look for work, and … and I don't want you to just vanish. I mean, that's my kid." It still felt unreal. "Maybe, if it's okay with you, I can visit once in a while. Or something? Birthday presents? I seriously have no idea," he admitted, letting out an airy, confused laugh.
"If you really want that, we can discuss it next time. You're not thinking straight," she pointed out with a light smile, although her eyes still looked timid and regretful. She began to walk away, but she jolted back around as soon as she reached the door. "You said you're seeing someone. I just want you to know, I'm not here to get back together with you. I'm happy where I am in my life. I have him," she said, looking down at the baby, "and I have plans for the future. I don't need or want a partner right now. I just want to assure you of that. I'm not here to win you back. We had one night of fun, and I don't regret it. I don't want your new girlfriend to think—"
"Boyfriend," he corrected sharply. "He's … my boyfriend."
"I see. I don't want your boyfriend to think I'm here to steal you away from him. Like I said, I planned to raise him myself, but finding another job is hard."
"Tell you what," Gray offered. "Keep looking around, but for now I could see if you can hire in as part of the non-magic staff in Fairy Tail. We hire waitresses to serve the guild members food and do the normal cleanup. Plus then, you could bring the baby and someone can look after him. Bisca is really good with kids; she'd probably agree to babysit while you work."
Emilia's eyes teared up. "That would be perfect. Gray, you … you really are too kind." Her eyes slammed shut. "I'm so sorry about this." She turned again.
"Hold up," he called out, and with quick strides Gray walked up to her. He looked down at the baby again. Hesitantly, he reached his hand out to stroke the downy soft black fuzz on top of his head. "Sorry, I just … I need to know this is real."
"He's real, Gray. He's your son. That smell is real too." She laughed as she adjusted the baby sling. "I should get him out of here before his diaper leaks. I'll see you around."
"Y-Yeah." Gray pulled his hand back. He was not sure if he should be happy, angry, depressed, worried, or simply have an emotional breakdown right there in his living room.
Emilia left, Gray shut the door after her, and then he shuffled back to the couch. He collapsed hard and stared ahead without moving, his mind so filled that he could not process what was going on around him. He felt hollow, lost, trapped in a void, like his entire future was crumbling before him, and something unexpected—unwanted—was rebuilding everything into a nightmarish reality. Everything was falling apart, and all he could do was stare ahead.
Blue eyes filled his mind. His eyes. His child.
He shook his head. No! Yet the child was real, and those eyes…
Gray slumped over, clenching his scalp, as the happy future he had imagined with Natsu melted away, and a new reality filled his overwhelmed mind. His voice trembled in shock mixed with grief as he whispered into the void.
"I'm … a dad?"
