Chapter 77
A Night That Never Happened
The sun set early and brought about an autumn chill. Natsu built the bonfire huge, laughing wildly as the flames licked the sky and orange embers floated up into the inky darkness.
They feasted on fire-roasted meats and drank barrels of beer until all were tipsy. Freed brought out a flute to play a tune and Lucy sang along. Laxus leaned back to admire his musically talented boyfriend, Loke looked in a trance at Lucy's voice, while Gray and Natsu cuddled close together, getting in some clandestine touches when no one was looking.
Natsu glanced over to Gray as they sat wrapped in a blanket and Gray secretly stroked Natsu's inner thigh, almost enough to rile him up but not quite.
"Hey, did I push you into things earlier?" he whispered worriedly.
Gray shrugged. "It was fine. I would stop something if I was against it."
"I know we didn't really talk about it beforehand."
"Yeah, but it's not like we don't have experience with Loke around." He glanced over at the ginger whose hair tufts were perked as he watched Lucy sing. "I feel safe with Loke and Lucy. If you really want to do something with the two of them, so long as I'm there, I'm willing to consider it."
"Okay," Natsu agreed quietly. "I mean, maybe it'll help me."
Gray wrapped Natsu up firmly in his arms. "The more the merrier."
They talked and laughed late into the night. Then Freed rose to his feet, gathering their attention.
"I have a proposition to make," he declared. "A little adventure for all six of us, although this applies more to Gray and Natsu."
"Oh?" Gray said, curious about some group event.
"As you know, we will be going on our winter break; these meetings will be less often as snow keeps many of the members home. However, when spring allows us to return to the beach, I propose a private show … with Natsu as the entertainment."
Natsu's eyes grew huge. "Wh-What? Me?"
Gray shouted out protectively, "Wait, what do you mean?" His arms tightened around Natsu.
"Oh, don't worry," Freed said with a chuckle. "It's hands-off, unless the entertainers grant permission. Basically, you pick something to do, something fun, and we get to watch. It can involve sex or not. Every couple in this group eventually hosts one of these shows, except for those who are strongly opposed to voyeurism and exhibitionism. From my understanding, you two are very much into that."
Gray's eyes narrowed. "I normally don't like people knowing I'm doing it."
"We all know about you, though. This is our secret, and we protect that secret lifestyle."
Natsu looked up to Gray, whose brow was tense. Finally, Gray's eyes met his.
"What do you think?" he asked.
Natsu blushed slightly. "I … might actually like it."
"Great!" Freed cheered. "I'll make sure to reserve a room."
Gray had to admit, the idea of showing Natsu off immensely aroused him. His terror of letting people know he was into kinks had changed. Now he had a support group, and he realized how many people were supportive of them, even eager to make their sex life better. What had once been taboo was now approved and encouraged.
He wished he had found this group ages ago.
There were more songs and more beer. As the night got cold, Lucy began to curl tighter into her blanket, and Freed rubbed his arms against the moist sea air. Sensing his chill, Laxus wrapped him up in his arms.
Finally, Lucy let out a sigh of frustration. "I'm getting too cold."
Freed pouted. "Kinda same here."
Natsu perked up. "I can make a bigger fire!"
His hands got ready to cast magic, but Gray put his hand over Natsu's wrist, breaking the magic circle.
"I think it's time to go home."
Natsu whined, but the sea-moistened onshore breeze drove them back. They packed up their little camp, making sure to clean up every piece of trash.
"It's a shame to go back so soon," Lucy lamented, feeling guilty for not being impervious to the cold like some of the people there.
Freed shrugged. "Well, we can still chat. I would like to host a couple's tea party."
Natsu scoffed at the idea. "Tea party? No thanks."
Laxus chuckled at Natsu. "How about we have our own drinking party at the pub?"
Loke came over. "Now that sounds like fun."
"Oh!" Freed realized. "This works, actually. The doms shall have a nice tea party, while the subs can go make fools of themselves and throw up in the morning."
"Fuck you," Laxus grumbled.
"I'm not submissive," Natsu insisted.
Loke pulled them both away by their shoulders. "Come on, you Dragon Slayers. I saw a good place earlier. They have a live band and I smelled barbecue."
Laxus followed Loke across the sand. "I do like good music."
Natsu's fist punched the air. "Meat! Meat! Meat!"
While they headed off into town, Freed led Lucy and Gray back to the hotel. After dropping off their supplies, they gathered in his room, where he brought out a fancy teapot and china dishes. Tea was already brewing as they gathered at the table.
Freed set the saucers down with expert precision, each facing the same way, with matching teacups and a tiny spoon to stir should they want sugar or cream.
Lucy chuckled at the setup that was so reminiscent of her youth, attending posh tea parties in the Heartfilia gardens. "You brought an entire china set?"
"Well, of course," he said, pouring the tea out for each of them. "Sometimes I have these tea parties."
Gray pouted at the floral china cup in front of him. "Looks fancy."
Freed bluntly told him, "It's expensive, please don't break it." He went back to the room's tiny kitchen and came back with a tray of scones, asparagus and cheese mini tarts, and sweet maple rolls. "Here you go!"
Lucy looked positively delighted to have a real high tea. Gray carefully took one of the tarts. It was cold from being in the hotel's mini fridge, but biting into it, he found it was really good.
Freed happily settled in. It was time to talk about their crazy Dragon Slayers and Celestial Spirit.
"So," Freed said once they were all settled with their tea and treats, "we can help you set up something to do with Natsu."
Lucy grinned. "Oh yes! Please let us help."
Gray looked flustered. "Well, I guess."
"Delightful," Freed said, taking a sip of tea. "Now, what is your favorite kink?"
"Me?" Gray felt put on the spot, humiliated to be discussing something that he had tried to hide about himself for so long. "I … I guess … I mean, what really gets me every time … um … is watching him … st-struggling not to piss himself."
"Omorashi," Freed said with a raised eyebrow. "That's delightfully unexpected."
Lucy sighed. "Oh, I can't do that with Loke. He doesn't pee, you know. He also can hold back from coming basically for eternity, so it's no fun at all, although he tries to humor me by making himself sound desperate to come."
"And what is Natsu's favorite kink?"
Gray was not sure if it was his place to say.
"Oh! I know," Lucy said. "He loves to be immobilized."
"Anything else?" Freed asked Gray. "Something that goes well with omorashi."
He stared down into his teacup. "W-Well, there are a couple of things he really likes. For one, licking blood."
Lucy cringed and drew away. "Eww!" Instantly, she looked shocked at herself. "Oh! Sorry!" She quickly put a hand on Gray's leg. "I didn't mean to be rude, I'm not judging you two, just … can we maybe pass on that one? That's a serious hard limit for me."
"It's fine," Gray whispered, although he was glad Natsu had not seen her instinctive reaction. At least she apologized for being rude.
Freed rubbed his chin. "Fascinating. I wonder if it's a Dragon Slayer thing. Laxus is the same, and Levy told me Gajeel has a huge fetish for period sex."
"On your period?" Lucy cried out, and she grabbed her lower stomach instinctively. "Ow, ow, I feel cramps just thinking about it. I have zero sex drive on my cycle. I don't know how Levy does it."
Gray added, "He also liked this last time, being suspended."
"Is that what you two did?" Freed asked in amusement.
Lucy grabbed Gray's hands in excitement. "How did he respond? Leave out no details."
Gray slowly loosened up with the floral scent of tea and chatting with trusted friends. He began to talk about things he had never told anyone before, and strangely enough, he felt comfortable doing it. Much like with going to therapy, it took finding the right person and a feeling of trust for him to open up.
Across town, in a loud tavern with a mix of locals, tourists, and people who looked like pirates, the other members of Fairy Tail were having their own gathering.
Loke smugly smiled. "And that's when I realized she got off quicker acting like a sultry little dominatrix. I think it was more of a shock to Lucy than to me. I mean, I always thought she was captivating, but to actually want to capture me?" A tiny sound like a purr rumbled in his chest. "What about you, Laxus? You never really did explain how you and Freed got into this."
"Oh, he always knew he was a sadist, long before I came around," he replied with a massive beer stein in his hand. "I wanna know what are the limits of what I can handle, so when he wants to push those limits, I'm all for it. Simple as that."
"And you, Natsu?"
Natsu had already drank a lot around the campfire, and now he was on his second beer. His mind was loose, and so were his thoughts. "I used to have dreams of being tied up, you know like, during puberty."
Laxux chuckled. "You had wet dreams of that?"
"Uh-huh!" Natsu giggled a little too loudly. "So, yeah, it was kinda early on that I knew I wanted it. And then one day, me and Gray, I broke into his room. At night," he clarified. "Yeah, he almost shot me with ice."
Laxus was amused by this drunk, looser, carefree Natsu. "That sounds like a crazy hookup."
"Uh-huh. We were talking, and … and he realized I liked bondage, and I realized he liked to tie people up and punish them, and next thing I knew, we were nakeeeeeed."
"Collision sex," Laxus said with a smirking snort. "Best sorta fucking out there."
"I have to admit," Loke said, drinking with easy grace and no sign of intoxication. "You and Gray hooking up surprised me the most. I mean, Laxus and Freed … seriously, we all knew Freed worshiped you. Me and Lucy, how can you not see the chemistry between us and realize we were destined for one another," he said with a boastful smugness. "But you two were rivals, total opposites. We knew you secretly cared for one another, but for years you two were no closer than any other members of Fairy Tail. Laki cares for the well-being of Bickslow, but I would never imagine the two of them hooking up."
"Bickslow's not into sex," Laxus said offhandedly.
Natsu took a sip and shrugged. "It's kinda crazy to me too, you know. I mean, it's Gray, he cried out with a laugh at the absurdity. Then his face melted into a sappy smile. "It works, though." He hugged himself with bliss. "And I love him," he whispered, sounding lonely to not have his boyfriend right there with him.
"Awww!" Loke draped an arm around Natsu. "That's all that matters, right?" He wrapped his other arm around Laxus, pulling him in, much to the burly man's irritation. "We've all found perfect partners for our unique but amazing relationships."
Laxus yanked back. "Don't fuckin' touch me."
Just then, a massive man covered with skull tattoos strode up to their table. "Hey! You guys think you can drink, huh?" He flapped a wad of cash in his hand, showing he meant to challenge them.
Natsu puffed out his chest. "What of it?" If it was a fight or a challenge, he was all in.
Loke put a hand on his shoulder. "No, Natsu." He stood and eyed the man up and down. He seemed to be totally sober at the moment, whereas Laxus and Natsu had been drinking copiously on the beach, and now had two more beers down them. They would lose their money for sure. "Let me handle this one."
Laxus raised an eyebrow. "But Loke, you don't get—"
"Shh!" If this man knew he was not human, he would never accept the challenge. The fact that Loke was incapable of getting drunk on Earthland booze made this totally unfair, but this man challenged them first, likely seeing Natsu sloshed and assuming all three were drunk. He faced the tattooed man firmly. "I'll take you up on drinking."
"What, a lightweight like you?" The man sneered, uninterested in wimps. "I was more thinking of the big guy," he said with a nod over to Laxus.
Loke stood in the man's way. "If you can't get past me, you can't get past these two."
The mountainous man chuckled deep in his chest. "You're on, ginger!"
It was late in the evening when Loke shuffled through the streets of the harbor town, sober and thus taking it upon himself to get the other two home. Natsu had completely slumped onto Loke, who took his full weight. He kept sniffing Loke, slurring out that he smelled good. Meanwhile, Laxus kept drifting off, getting easily distracted, and had to be held by the sleeve to pull him back on course. They made it to the hotel, and Loke first went to Freed's room, where the three doms were playing cards with their tea.
"Sir, your order," Loke said, yanking Laxus inside, who had been drifting off aimlessly down the hall again. "One well-plastered Lightning Dragon Slayer," then he pulled Natsu's face off his neck, where he had drooled onto the collar of his shirt, "with a side of fire breath."
"I'mma no side dish," Natsu said, wavering on his feet.
Freed and Gray both leaped up to get their boyfriends.
Freed fretfully checked Laxus. "Oh, you are not good with hangovers, you know that."
"Shit, how much did you drink?" Gray asked, seeing Natsu wobbling and blinking in confusion.
Natsu giggled. "They ran out of beer."
Freed's mouth dropped. "You drank the pub dry?"
Loke gave a sheepish shrug. "That was partly my fault. I got into seven drinking matches. They didn't know I'm a Celestial Spirit, so of course I beat them all. The money paid for our tab. Unfortunately, these two," he said thumbing at the two drunk men, "tried a few drinking matches themselves. I knew it was time to go when Natsu tried to challenge me. He didn't recognize who I was."
"I do too!" Natsu protested. "You's a … an orange Gray. Yeah."
Loke waved to Natsu, showing just how far gone he was.
Gray sighed and shook his head. "I'm surprised he didn't burn down anything."
"Oh, he did," Loke said with a roll of his eyes. "A table and two chairs. The money I made in the drinking contests paid for that too."
"I'll take him home. Thanks, Loke."
The Lion nodded, just glad he was around to make sure they got home safely. Who knows what might have happened to Hargeon with a drunken Laxus and Natsu challenging one another to fights. He held his arm out like a gentleman. "Lucy, shall we?"
She allowed him to lead her away from the two unfortunate couples who now had to look forward to the hangover. "Sometimes," she whispered as they walked to their room, "I'm glad you can't get drunk." She would sacrifice not being able to get her sub to piss himself so long as she never had to worry about him vomiting and doing stupid things under the influence of alcohol.
Gray pulled Natsu along, and the Dragon Slayer giggled as he latched onto Gray and nuzzled his neck as they walked. His hand pawed at Gray's chest, but Gray gently pulled the fingers away before he could undo the buttons.
"You smell gooooood," Natsu muttered, sniffing up toward Gray's hair. "Why do you smell like the beach?"
"Because we're at the beach, idiot."
Natsu hummed and stopped walking. "I like the beach. I stay here." He began to flop.
"No!" Gray managed to grab him and keep him upright, although he only stumbled wherever Gray pulled him to walk. "You're going to the room."
"What room? Beach room?" He punched Gray in the shoulder and teased with slurred laughter, "Beaches don't have rooms, silly."
Gray growled in annoyance. "Come on, before you puke." He dragged Natsu onward, knowing he needed to get him out of the hallway before he either vomited, pissed himself, or completely passed out.
Natsu grabbed around Gray's neck, letting himself be pulled but not really trying to take steps. "Are you going to the beach?"
"We're going to the room."
"Beach room?" Natsu asked, sounding excited.
He rolled his eyes and shrugged. "Sure."
Natsu swung a fist into the air. "Beach roooooooom!"
Just as fire began to flicker, Gray grabbed Natsu's hand, chilling it down to stop him from setting anything on fire. That made Natsu slip, and Gray had to catch him before he completely collapsed. Growling, wishing beer had never been invented, he managed to half-drag Natsu back to their room.
Natsu giggled as Gray stood him solidly on the ground and turned to shut and lock the door. Suddenly, Gray felt something slam hard into his back. He spun around, worried that Natsu passed out onto him, only to see Natsu had shoved him. Now, he was caging Gray in, pushed back against the door. That hit had surprising strength, despite his unsteadiness.
Natsu was right on him, their chests smashed together. His arms held Gray captive, eyes heated, and hands pawing.
"I feel amazing! So free. I don't fear aaaaanything right now."
"I'm sure you don't," Gray grumbled. Natsu's fingers dipped down to his nipples, and Gray grabbed them. "Hands off!" he warned.
"I want you," he said, pushing himself up tighter against Gray's body.
Gray put his hands on Natsu's chest, making sure he kept some space. This was not how he wanted to end an otherwise amazing weekend.
Instead, Natsu playfully began to bop Gray on the nose, a tap for every syllable he spoke. "Earlier, I was in your ass, and it was filled with cum." He giggled at the annoyed face Gray made at the nose-bopping. "I liked that." His eyes blazed with desire, and his voice turned serious. "I wanna feel it again."
A slight shiver went down Gray's limbs. Whenever Natsu talked in that deeper voice, it made him tingle inside, but he knew that now was not the time. These were drunken words, and consent could never happen when one partner was inebriated. So, as much as Natsu saying he wanted to top thrilled him, he knew he had to be mature about this, and that meant telling his libido to calm down.
"I'll allow Loke to do that again, if you want."
Natsu purred and clawed Gray's chest. "I want it to be me. The smell was all wrong. It's still wrong," he said, pouting as he looked across Gray's body and realized the smell was not pure anymore. "The cum's gone, but Loke's smell is still all over you." His eyes narrowed in anger. "I don't like that."
Natsu started to lick Gray all over, first over his mouth, then along his jawline. When Natsu tried to aim for his throat, Gray pushed back against his chest again, but strong fingers tore his halting hand aside. Natsu glared at him defiantly, and Gray's mouth dropped.
The aggressiveness in Natsu's eyes instantly went away, and he began to happily lick up Gray's cheeks. That made Gray laugh.
"You dog," he teased.
Natsu hung out his tongue and wiggled his hips like shaking a tail, then playfully gave Gray lick after lick, slobbering all over him. Gray laughed, even when a lick went over his mouth.
Well, if he was being playful about it, why not just let him have some fun?
"Do you want to lick?"
"Uh-huh!" Natsu yipped.
"Okay, let's get you to bed." He took both of Natsu's hands, leading him across the room. "I don't know how I smell, but if you feel better licking the smell away, that much is fine."
Natsu collapsed onto the bed, and his head wobbled before collapsing onto the pillows. Gray sighed and shook his head. It was almost adorable. Natsu then grabbed Gray's hand and pulled him to be with him. Gray lay down, and Natsu happily scooted up, licking Gray's face. He began to move down, but paused and pulled up.
"Right here?" He gave a tentative lick to Gray's neck.
He felt weird about allowing this when Natsu was drunk, but it was just licking. "Sure."
"Take your shirt off."
Now Gray hesitated. Against his better judgment, he pulled his shirt up over his head.
"I'm not very comfortable with this," he warned as he lay back down.
"It's just licking," Natsu said, happily content to drench Gray's throat and chest with his tongue, lick after lick. He sniffed at times, licked certain spots to clean away the smell, and doused Gray with his own smell, claiming him. Then he tried to lick over Gray's nipple.
"Natsu," Gray warned, pushing his head aside.
Natsu's eyes shot up at him in annoyance, but instead he licked down Gray’s sternum. Gray already felt a guilty sickness twisting in his stomach. Yeah, he liked this. A lot! But it was not right. If it truly had been just Natsu wanting to reclaim him, that might be part of sub-drop, and Gray wanted to let his boyfriend recover in the best way possible. However, this was starting to appear as a lot more than just a psychological need.
When Natsu's tongue went lower across his belly, heading in a straight line down, Gray had enough. He grabbed Natsu's chin and yanked it up with a firm, "No."
Natsu's eyes were hazy with lust. "More," he purred in a fiery rumble. Gray shook his head, and Natsu pouted. "You lick me too."
"No." He sat up to stop these risky shenanigans. "You're drunk. I won't do anything selfish."
"Is not shellfish," Natsu protested in a drunken, whiny tantrum, pouting like a spoiled child who had his toy taken away. "I wanna love you." He smirked pruriently and tried to reach down to Gray's belt. His voice was low, although still slurred, as he whispered, "Make love to you."
Gray was quick to grab Natsu's hand before he could touch anything. "Nice offer, but no. You're mentally incapacitated."
"I'm not ingababasayted," Natsu insisted, butchering the word.
Gray shook his head and stood up. All of this was a bad idea.
Suddenly, Natsu grabbed Gray around the waist, and with far more strength than seemed possible given his inebriated state, he slammed Gray down onto the bed. He bounced hard, almost completely off the mattress, before landing on his back.
"Shit!" Gray saw Natsu climbing on up top of him. "Natsu, no!"
Natsu's face was petulant as he glared down at Gray. "Watching Loke fuck you made me wanna do that. I wanna fuck you! Wanna fill your ass like he did. I wanna smell me inside you."
Gray shook his head. As much as he was proud that Natsu could get to the point of wanting that, he knew this was only the courage of too much alcohol, and it would turn into a nightmare come morning. He tried to remain calm, if only for Natsu's sake. "Okay, we'll talk about that, but in the morning when you're sober."
Gray tried to shift Natsu off, but the Dragon Slayer grabbed his wrists and crushed them down.
"No! I'm not scared like this, so I wanna do it now."
Suddenly, fire blasted out. Gray shouted, but he felt no pain. The blaze was barely even hot; however, both his and Natsu's clothes completely turned to ash. Now he could see how erect Natsu was, and he realized how dangerous this had become.
"Natsu," he said quietly, hoping to deescalate the situation before Natsu did anything he would regret.
"I want it," Natsu said firmly.
"Hell no," Gray said, and he struggled against Natsu's hold. "Come on!"
Natsu smirked as he made smug thrusts between Gray's thighs. "I know how much you've wanted this."
"Yeah, but not like this."
Gray head-butted Natsu hard, and his wrists were released enough for him to break free and shove Natsu aside. He leaped off the bed while Natsu rubbed his forehead.
"Natsu, calm down. You're drunk, and I'm not going to—"
Natsu charged, flames weakly flickering, not lucid enough for a full attack, but he still managed to barrel Gray over, knocking him to the ground. Gray's head hit the wooden dresser hard. He cried out as his skull rang, and his vision threatened to black out.
No! He had to stay awake, if only to stop Natsu from doing something that would destroy him.
Dazed, lying face-down, he shook his head to clear up his thoughts. Just then, Natsu jumped on his back, popping something in his spine that made Gray cry out in pain.
"I wanna fuck you," Natsu sneered, kicking Gray's legs apart and slamming his hands down. "Your ass should be mine. Only mine! Only my smell. You're my mate!"
Gray felt teeth sink in deep into his shoulder, and he screamed as his flesh tore to the sharp incisors. Natsu made wild thrusts up against Gray's ass, but being dry and Gray unprepped, all he did was rub against it a little.
Gray shook his head. He had not wanted to take drastic measures, but it was already too late. "Shit. I'm sorry for this, Natsu."
A frosty blue glow formed, and a fist of ice shot out, knocking Natsu back hard. The fist turned into a spider's web and thrust Natsu against the wall, trapping him like a fly.
Gray struggled to roll around, rubbing his head. Deep, exhausted breaths panted out as he shouted, "No … means … no!"
Natsu snarled, but then his eyes rolled back, and with a drunken groan, he passed out.
Gray collapsed back, staring at the ceiling, and he cursed. He thought about what Natsu had told him, his deepest, darkest secrets.
This … This was something Natsu feared the most. This was his nightmare, why he felt unable to make love. He feared that darkness inside him.
Tears began to gather in Gray's eyes, and as he lay on the floor, sprawled out and naked, his chest began to shake. He cried, the fear of being attacked finally hitting him, but worse, the realization of what this drunken moment of stupidity was going to do to Natsu.
He would wake up with a hangover, remember Gray screaming in pain, and it would torture him.
All of his progress!
All of his healing!
Gone, in one drunken moment.
Natsu would be scared of himself, scared for Gray's safety.
It would destroy him.
He might leave again.
Gray could not stop crying, miserable as he realized Natsu was going to suffer once he recalled what he had had done. He looked up at the heavens, praying for some way to erase that whole evening.
He felt wetness on his shoulder, looked over, and realized he was bleeding heavily. Normally when Natsu bit him, he could heal it right away with his lust spit. This was only twice that Natsu bit and Gray had to tend to the wound himself. He began to sit up, but his head was woozy and his spine hurt. Walking slowly, trying not to touch anything with his bloody hand, he went to the bathroom to check out the bite. It was deep, blood all down his chest. For now, he dabbed up what he could with toilet paper, washed it in the sink, hissing in pain from the water, and put on a bandage. He would have to find disinfectant later.
He walked back to the main room and looked at Natsu, naked, unconscious, and stuck in an ice web. Gray felt tears gathering in his eyes again.
"Shit! You're never going to forgive yourself for this."
He shook away the tears. He had an idea, he was not sure if it would work, but if it did, maybe Natsu's sanity could be saved.
He released the web and eased Natsu to the ground. He found new clothes for both of them, dressed Natsu as well as he could, and put on some pants for himself. Then he tried to hoist Natsu up into his arms.
Something in his back cracked, and Gray only barely held back a scream of pain, gritting his teeth against a sharp pinch to one of his nerves. It burned through his mid-back, but he ignored it. He would worry about his own injuries later. First, he had to care for Natsu.
Gray flinched as the weight of Natsu's slump body hurt his bandaged shoulder. Still, he carried Natsu out into the hall and to Freed's room, leaving him on the ground. He rubbed out both his shoulder and his back as he knocked on the door.
"Freed, it's me," he called in, knocking more persistently. "Come on, open up."
The door creaked open, and Freed looked stunned to see Gray with claw marks, a few bruises on his face, and the blood-soaked bandage. "Gray! What? What the bloody hell happened?"
Gray's voice was haggard as he begged, "Please, erase Natsu's memory of tonight."
Freed's eyes flashed in anger. "What did you do to him?"
"Nothing," Gray sighed in weariness. "I did nothing."
Freed's anger shifted to pity, then deep concern as he eyed the injuries. "What did he do to you?" The flinch in Gray's eyes was enough for a confession. "Gray, are you okay?"
"Yeah. Yeah, he didn't … I mean, he t-tried … he's drunk. He thought I would want it." Gray looked down at the drooling, unconscious Dragon Slayer. "Part of me did," he muttered. His shoulder throbbed, but he shoved aside the pain. "I can handle it, but he won't be able to. His past…" Gray broke into tears, thinking about how long it took Natsu to tell him about his dark, bloody past, and all the healing it had taken for him to get to this point. "He'll hate himself if he remembers he even tried it. Months of therapy will go down the drain. Worse than that," he said, gazing down at his beloved boyfriend, "he might honestly try to hurt himself. So please, tell me you have a way to erase memories."
Freed looked troubled by the desperate, sobbing request. He could tell enough just by looking at the injuries, Natsu must have attacked, wanting sex, and Gray was forced to fight back. He personally could not imagine the emotional pain Gray must be in, let alone the horrified guilt Natsu would suffer in the morning, knowing he hurt the man he loved.
Freed closed his eyes. Manipulating memories was against his own rules. Still…
"I know a rune that can block a memory, not quite erasing it, but the result is the same."
"Will he ever remember it?" Gray asked worriedly.
"Not unless I specifically will him to."
Gray hugged himself and shook his head. "Don't. Don't, please."
"It's okay," Freed said, hoping to calm down Gray as well. "I understand. He has a complicated past, right?"
"Yeah, and this … it'll destroy him. So please!" Fresh tears burned in Gray's eyes. He lowered his head, feeling weak in front of a fellow member of Fairy Tail.
Freed took a deep breath and let it out slowly. Then he firmed up, determined to do this, no matter how morally questionable. "Well, I can block his memory, but you'll want a healer for that shoulder before morning, or Natsu's going to know something happened."
"Yeah, I'll find one, but him first," Gray insisted. "Please, he can't know he did that." He looked down at the peacefully sleeping face. "I can't bear to watch him suffer like that." Not again. Not after all the progress he made. "So please. For me. For both of us."
Freed nodded solemnly. He knelt beside Natsu and swept back the pink bangs away from his face. Green eyes briefly opened, only to roll back in dizziness. Freed drew a rune on Natsu's forehead with his finger. It shined purple for a moment before sinking in. Then Freed stood and stepped back.
"It's done. The memory of everything from now back to the last time he saw Laxus will be blocked."
Gray bowed as well as he could with his aching back. "Thank you."
A deep, comforting relief soothed out his muscles, and the tears went away. Natsu would never know he did anything, so he would not suffer. That was all that mattered. Gray knelt beside Natsu, stroking back his hair with a tender, sad smile.
"All right, time to drag your ass back, flame-brain."
Suddenly, Freed was behind him and had Gray in a restrictive hold around his neck.
"What the … Hey!"
"Sleep," Freed said, drawing a rune with his finger.
"No!" he screamed, but Gray instantly went limp, falling to the ground.
"I'm sorry, but I seriously doubt you could love Natsu the same way if you had to keep a secret like that from him. It's best if neither of you remember." He drew the same rune onto Gray's forehead, glowing purple before sinking into his brain.
Laxus stepped out of the hotel room wrapped in a robe and rubbing his eyes. "I heard a shout. Problem?"
"Help me drag these two in." Freed began to reach for Gray, but he saw the blood-soaked bandage on his shoulder. "We need to clean up some evidence."
Laxus rolled his eyes. "Oh fuck." There went his evening.
Gray woke up from the sound of Natsu vomiting. He flinched. He could not even remember Natsu coming back, nor when he himself got to the hotel room. Had he drank too much? He had beer on the beach but then all that tea, and then Loke returned with Laxus and Natsu, and he left to bring Natsu to the room…
And that was it.
Gray shrugged it off. He had been drunk enough to forget details before. Right now, he had a hungover Dragon Slayer to care for.
He went into the bathroom and saw Natsu kneeling by the toilet. He stroked Natsu's hair back as he vomited again.
"No, don't look at me," Natsu grumbled.
"I've seen you worse." Gray stayed where he was. "I take it you drank a lot."
"Kinda," he admitted. "Sorry."
"Hey, so long as you had fun."
"Yeah, I did. Heh, Loke kept having drinking contests…" For a moment, his face turned green, looking ready to vomit again, but he managed to hold it down. "He won all sorts of money, enough to pay for the table I … heh … accidentally burned. It was an accident!" he insisted. "I … can't remember making it back. It's all kinda hazy after we left the pub."
"It's your own damn fault if your head hurts."
Natsu wiped his mouth. "So long as you're here."
He leaned into Gray's shoulder, wanting to cuddle. Suddenly Natsu stiffened and yanked back, staring at his shoulder in horror. Gray looked over in concern
"What's wrong?"
Natsu looked at Gray's shoulder. Why had he flinched, as if expecting there to be an injury? He inspected it, but his skin looked fine.
"It's nothing. I … I thought I smelled your blood for a second."
"My blood?" Gray looked at his shoulder. "Did you bite me in my sleep?"
"Nah. Not even a bruise." Natsu shrugged. "I've got vomit in my nose. Maybe it's messing me up." He took a tissue and blew his nose, getting the acidic leftovers out.
"Well, Puke Boy, let's get you cleaned up and back to bed."
After a quick wash, Gray helped Natsu back, tucking him in, and they cuddled until they fell back to sleep.
As morning woke them again. Natsu felt better. Gray smiled at him, stroking Natsu's chest. Out the window, birds chirped, and the sounds of the harbor were already starting up for the day.
"How do you feel?" Gray asked.
Natsu thought about it. "Hungry."
"You were vomiting all night!" he cried out.
"Yeah, and I'm hungry."
Gray shook his head. What else had he expected? "To be honest, I could use some food."
They dressed and went to a café by the hotel. Seagulls flew around, hoping for a dropped treat. Fishermen were already coming back in from a pre-dawn haul with the fresh fish that would be used for that day. Hargeon was not in its busiest season, but there were still tourists and townsfolk around.
While they were eating, they saw Freed and Laxus walk by, pulling a cart of their supplies behind them.
"Hey, you two," Natsu called out. Freed flinched slightly at the cheerful voice. "Are you guys already on your way to the train station?"
He walked over to the café. "Yes, we need to get back. Are you staying an extra day?"
"No," said Gray. "We're taking a later train."
"Yeah, I wanna shop," Natsu said happily.
Freed glanced between the two searching their faces. "Are … you two okay?"
Gray shrugged. "Sure. Well, the idiot here," he said, thumbing to Natsu, "drank himself stupid and was puking half the night."
"Yes," Freed said with a slight glare back at Laxus. "Even an anti-sickness rune I know couldn't hold his stomach down. But otherwise … how are you two doing?"
Gray and Natsu smiled at each other.
"We're good," said Natsu.
Gray took Natsu's hand and rubbed over the promise bracelet. "Yeah, made some progress."
Natsu squeezed Gray's hand. "Good progress."
Freed looked relieved. "Wonderful. We'll let you eat. See you back at the guild."
Freed and Laxus turned and walked on down the sidewalk. Freed's face pained over in guilt, and Laxus glanced back at the two.
"They have no fuckin' idea," he whispered.
"That's the point."
"Ya know, we're basically covering up a crime."
Freed's face went cold and frightening calloused. "The one and only excuse to break the rules is to save a friend. Sometimes, we do things that are less than moral for a greater good. It's a dark choice, but I willingly take it." If Natsu had actually raped Gray, perhaps Freed would regret letting him get away with it, but as it was, he knew that he had likely saved their relationship.
Freed paused and looked back at the two just as Natsu fed Gray a glazed biscuit, only to smash it in his face and laugh at him. This precious playfulness would not have existed if he had done nothing to help.
Bitter but determined, Freed said, "Even if it's morally ambiguous, it's worth it."
Laxus merely shrugged. "If you say so."
They continued onward toward the train station. "Still, when we get back to Magnolia, we need to find Mest. I want him to wipe my own memory. Yours too. That way, there's no chance Gray and Natsu will ever learn."
Laxus narrowed his eyes. "I'll do it for your sake and because I don't like the idea of living with the guilt for the rest of my life, but for the record, I fuckin' hate the idea of someone messing with my memory."
"I'm not fond of it either, but it's best this way." Freed looked forward with darkened eyes. "They can never know about this. As far as anyone is concerned, it was a night that never happened."
End of Chapter 77
Audio drama: The audio contains a little crossover. On the beach, Lucy is singing "Take Me Down That Sunset Road" from my fanfic "Wheels of Fire." — https://chirb.it/LsfezO
I know I didn't do an audio drama for Chapter 76 yet. I might add it later. To be honest, with the Covid quarantine and my husband working from home, I can't easily do these audios, especially a really sexy one like last chapter. After all, he might be on a conference call with Shanghai or on the phone with the CEO. He can't have his wife sitting one room over moaning loudly, haha! The only reason I did this chapter is because it was short-ish, and he had to go into the office, so I quickly recorded while he was gone. I hope people like it.
Be safe, be healthy. If you live in America, for fuck's sake, WEAR YOUR MASK! I have lost too many loved ones to Covid to give a damn about your "discomfort." If you aren't wearing a mask and following medical expert advice, just know that I blame YOU and those like you for spreading this virus and causing the death of the friends and family I have lost this summer, like my uncle. (I am so fuckin' done with "Trump's America" and the idiots who believe Fox News!)
