Chapter 8– Golden Light
Present Day
“I have some news about Shun.” She
said, expressionless.
“Tell us.” Ikki stood, moving to be near Hyoga
in case they heard the worse. The nurse looked at everyone, their fearful
expressions something she faced everyday on her job. “He is alive and in a
recovery room,” relieved sighs could be heard around the room as she continued,
“but something odd happened and we’re not sure what it was.”
Hyoga’s legs went weak upon hearing that Shun
had survived. He wanted to curl up into a ball and cry, perhaps to finally
release some of the emotions he had been holding back all day. “What
happened?” Ikki pressed, the voice for those held hostage by their emotions.
“Well—it really has no medical explanation, but
while we had him open, his heart stopped, which was to be expected under the
strain. Usually the doctor massages it until it starts beating again, but
before he could do that…“ she seemed hesitant on finishing, “this golden light
surrounded him, filling the entire room. His heart started all on it’s own and
when the doctor checked, all the heart damage that had been there moments before
was gone. It’s like he has a brand new heart.” The nurse paled, assuming they
would all find her story outrageous.
“Athena.” Hyoga looked to Saori, tears filling
his eyes as he blinked hard to keep them from falling. “It wasn’t me! I mean,
I tried earlier, but I couldn’t have done what she said while we were all
talking.” Seiya and Shiryu stood up, walking over to hug Hyoga, embracing him
in their unreserved joy. Ikki joined them, all three men huddled around Hyoga
who finally broke, finding strength in the support of his friends.
Aiko and Kado could hear their father crying,
sobs of happiness wafted out of the group, tears of their own streaming down
their cheeks. “Daddy.” Aiko sniffed softly. Ikki broke from the cluster and
pulled Aiko to his chest, wanting to comfort his niece. Kado found Saori’s arms
around his shoulders as she squeezed him in a side hug. The nurse stood silent
in the doorway, overwhelmed by the outpour of emotion. She had seen family and
loved ones cry in both pain and happiness, but something was different about
this group of people. They seemed to share a close bond.
She waited until they all started to pull
apart, “He’s in a recovery room. You can see him one at a time, but he’ll still
be asleep for awhile.” Seiya and Shiryu patted Hyoga on the back. “We’ll walk
you there.” Seiya offered and they followed the nurse. Ikki stayed behind to
comfort his niece and nephew, who were still trying to comprehend the severity
of the situation and possible consequences. They had never seen Hyoga cry like
that and it touched them just as much as it scared them, could they have really
lost their dad?
Seiya and Shiryu walked on either side of
Hyoga, their shoulders bumping into his every few steps so he knew they were
there. He seemed to be overcome with his feelings as they progressed down the
hallway and they kept quiet, flaring their cosmos’s a little to non-verbally
communicate their assistance and care. The nurse stopped in front of a door and
waited for them.
“Shun is in this room, he is still under the
anesthesia, so he may not respond to you.” She looked Hyoga directly in the
eyes, startled by the compassion in the crystal blue orbs staring back at her.
This man loved the patient deeply, that was obvious and heart warming.
“Go ahead, we’ll be right outside of the
door.” Shiryu encouraged Hyoga, knowing the pain of losing someone close and
understanding his friend’s jumbled state. Hyoga was overwhelmed with relief,
love, gratitude, and he was finally letting the true fear of losing his true
love surface so he could purge it.
Hyoga walked into the room, the door shutting
behind him with a soft click. Shun lay in the hospital bed, the sheets tucked
up to his shoulders. There were a few tubes and wires coming from under the
covers, hooked up to monitoring machines, but his beautiful face was
unfettered. Finding his momentum, Hyoga rushed to the bedside, tears flowing
openly as he dug under the blanket to find Shun’s hand.
“Shun. Oh god, I love you.” Hyoga clasped
Shun’s hand in his own, resting his forehead against them as he cried. The
sound of the electrical equipment hummed in the background to his symphony of
release. “I’ve never heard you cry like this.” A soft, strained voice murmured
and Hyoga lifted his head to see Shun’s eyes half open, looking at him.
“Shun!” Hyoga’s tears stopped as the thrill of
having his lover alive slammed into him all at once. “I thought I had lost
you.” Hyoga smiled, his tear stained cheeks rosy and flush. “I promised I
wouldn’t leave you.” Shun managed a smile as well, still groggy from the
drugs. The painkillers were keeping him from feeling too much physically, but
he knew he would be sore for a long time after having his chest cut open.
“I know, but I was still worried. I don’t know
what I’d do without you.” Hyoga gripped Shun’s hand tighter as they shared a
tender moment. “Hyoga—they were all there.” Shun whispered, his body heavy and
trying to go back to sleep. “Who was there?” He asked.
“The Gold Saints…all of them.” Shun’s eyes
closed, a realization dawning on Hyoga. Had the Gold Saints somehow intervened
in his surgery and healed him? It was not out of their abilities, but none of
them knew about the situation yet, did they? Shun took a deep breath and his
eyes opened into small slits again. “Camus—Shaka—Mu—Milo—Shion—Saga—Aldebaran—Aorios—Aiolia---Dohko—Aphrodi…”
Shun paused, trying to take another deep breath.
“Shhhh…don’t strain yourself. Relax and let
yourself heal, because I want to get you home as soon as possible.” Hyoga
played the role of responsible adult, even though he was dying to hear about the
Gold Saints. “They saved me—I died Hyoga.” Shun ignored his lover’s comment
about resting and launched into his brief story.
“You died?” Hyoga did not like the sound of
that, but listened intently anyway. “I left my body and it was quiet and
peaceful. I wanted to go, but I wanted to stay, so I hovered in the operating
room, watching the doctors and nurses…and my body.” Shun’s voice was getting
raspy as he swallowed to wet his throat.
“I didn’t know what to do—and then they were
there with me...standing around me. There were so many, some we don’t even know
from long ago. They flared their cosmos, a brilliant golden light that filled
the entire room.” Shun smiled a little, remembering the event. Hyoga was
poised in amazement, his heart welling with gratitude.
“Then Mu spoke to me and said one word, your
name, ‘Hyoga’.” Next thing I knew, I hear you crying and here we are.” Shun
finished, settling into his pillow as he tried to move his head. Hyoga helped
him with his pillow, propping him up some. “The nurse told us about the cosmos,
but we didn’t know whose it was because Saori was with us when it happened.
But, I don’t understand, some of those Saints are still alive and some of them
are not.” Hyoga tried to piece it together in his head but came up short.
“I understand it, but I don’t know how to
describe it. They wanted me to live…because of you.” Shun squeezed Hyoga’s
hand, stressing the significance of their love. “Even Kiki was there.” Shun
grinned, thinking of the amusing child that had grown into a powerful and
interesting adult, donning the gold Aires cloth when Mu retired his position.
Kiki even had a student whom he liked tease,
considering she was an energetic, talented girl, not to mention drop dead
gorgeous. Athena had allowed the female Saints to go without their masks if
they wanted, trying to catch up the times. They were all waiting for her to win
her Sainthood, be the next Aires Saint and marry Kiki who had been in love with
her since she started training with him. Thankfully, that had been when she was
seventeen because she trained with a Silver Saint until they realized she had
the ability to be a Gold Saint.
“You’ll have to tell Shiryu about that, he’ll
get a kick out of it.” Hyoga laughed, Shiryu and Kiki had remained close
friends throughout the years. “Can we have a party?” Shun pouted in his
adorable way that always melted Hyoga’s heart. “You just got out of surgery and
you are already wanting a party?” Hyoga teased, kissing the back of Shun’s
hand, which he still held.
“Well, we have to, to thank the Gold Saints and
everyone for being here for us.” Shun weakly pulled on Hyoga, wanting him to
lie down next to him. “We will have a party, when you get some of your strength
back. I’ll put Saori on it right away.” They both chuckled.
“Come here.” Shun tried to use his seductive
voice, but it sounded more like a squeak. “You want me to get in bed with
you?” Hyoga purred, delighted to be flirting with his partner for life. “It’s
never this hard to get you into bed.” Shun winked and Hyoga crawled up next to
him, careful not to lay on his IV or other necessary wires.
“Everyone wants to see you, but I promise I’ll
stay with you tonight.” Hyoga kissed Shun on the cheek, noticing it was
clammy. “Do you have my ring?” Shun asked, lifting his left hand, which
drooped from the effort. “Oh yeah, I have it right here.” Hyoga dug into his
pants pocket, producing the platinum band and placing it back on Shun’s ring
finger.
“They gave it to me when we first got here so
they wouldn’t lose it. I also have your watch.” Hyoga snuggled a little closer
to him, concerned that the nurse would barge in and berate him for being in the
bed with the patient. “Did I ever tell you how much I love this ring?” Shun
yawned. “Yes, but you can tell me again.” Hyoga wrapped his arms around Shun’s
chest, holding him close, thriving off the heat between them.
“I love it, and I love you.” Shun turned his
head, puckering his lips, cutely begging for a kiss. Hyoga smirked and pecked
him quickly on the lips, amused that he was already back to his adorable
tactics. Shun never ceased to be soft, gentle, charming and above all else,
loving.
“I love you too.” Hyoga whispered, holding
Shun’s hand up to look at the ring that matched his own. The years hardly
showed in the precious metal, but he made a note to have them both cleaned
anyway. “Speaking of the ring,” Hyoga suddenly remembered the waiting room, “we
were remembering things while you were in surgery. The story of our wedding
came up…Ikki was about to tell Kado and Aiko about it.”
“They’ve heard it before.” Shun concurred with
Hyoga’s earlier statement. “That’s what I said, but you know Ikki…they love to
hear anything he has to say since he’s the coolest man alive.” Hyoga chuckled,
remembering how both of their children used to sit awestruck, their eyes wide as
saucers, as Ikki would dazzle them with tales of his journeys and adventures.
They would wear burlap sacks to school if Ikki told them it was cool, defying
the traditional uniform for a taste of their uncle’s style. Luckily, Ikki never
took to telling them anything too outlandish.
“Seiya and Shiryu are outside the door, but we
can only come in one at a time.” Hyoga knew everyone wanted to see Shun and he
should not be so selfish. “Just stay here a little while longer…” Shun’s voice
drifted off as they held each other.
