Part Eight: The Favor
Hakkai woke to Hakuryuu’s rhythmic breath. He rolled on this back and stared at the ceiling. He sat up and draped his legs off the side of the bed. He straighten the waist band to his boxers and tried to stand. When his feet touched the floor, his head swooned. He gripped the bed and tried to find his footing. He stood staring at his hands. He didn’t dare move, not even to get back into bed. He’d found balance and the slightest shift would send him over.
Gojyo wandered into the infirmary. He glanced at the closed door that lead to Thea’s tiny private space. A sheet of paper with her name written by her hand marked the door as hers. He wondered who helped her with the pains last night.
He shrugged and looked at the closed curtains around Hakkai’s bed. He saw two feet on the floor.
He whipped the curtain open, “What are you doing up?”
Hakkai didn’t move, “Good morning, Gojyo. If it isn’t too much trouble, do you think you could assist me?”
Gojyo quickly, but gently slipped an arm around Hakkai and supported the slightly smaller man’s weight. Gojyo helped Hakkai back in to bed. “Man, you were hurt bad. You shouldn’t try things like that without anyone around.” Gojyo scanned Hakkai to make sure no wounds reopened. Still way too pale.
Hakkai offered a weak smile. “Yes, I know.” Gojyo watched as Hakkai’s face dropped to seriousness. “I need a favor, Gojyo. You‘re the only one I can trust with it.”
Crimson eyes probed deep emerald. “For you…anything.” Gojyo wondered if Hakkai knew the feelings the half-demon tried to hide from himself.
Hakkai closed his eyes. There was no way he could look at Gojyo while he asked this. “After our quest is done… “ Hakkai found courage in a brief moment of silence.
Gojyo knitted his brow.
“I want you to kill me and take care of Hakuryuu.” Hakkai spoke in smooth calm manner, almost as if he was asking for the salt at a dinner table.
Hakuryuu squawked.
Gojyo’s eyes widened. I know I didn’t hear what I thought I just heard. “What?”
Hakkai looked at Gojyo. His eyes carried a dark intensity, he spoke more slowly and firmly this time. “I want to hear you promise me. Promise me that you will kill me and take care of Hakuryuu.”
Gojyo blinked at his friend. The weight of the words sinking into him. “No way, I can’t do that. I won’t do that.” How much of a hit to the head did he take?
“Please, Gojyo, I know you are the only one emotion str strong enough to do it. I can’t keep living like this. I refuse. I’m too weak to do it myself.” Hakkai began to break down.
Gojyo stood up and cradled Hakkai’s trembling body.
“I can’t ….I can’t….” Hakkai’s words mirrored Gojyo’s thoughts.
Gojyo cradled Hakkai’s head in his hand, “Where is this coming from? What‘s going on with you?”
“I can’t bear this flux for the rest of my natural life. I can’t live without her. I can’t live without love. I can’t love without her. Please…Gojyo….please… promise me.”
Gojyo buried his face in Hakkai’s dark brown hair. “I can’t heal you. I can’t change what happened with her. I can’t kill you. I can’t promise you that. I care too much for you.”
Hakkai cringed. He didn’t need the weight of another person’s affections, that he simply could not return.
Gojyo gently held Hakkai and pressed him into his chest. “You have love, Hakkai. You aren’t living without love….you just don’t see it.”
Hakkai titled his head up and Gojyo tilted his head down. “What are trying to say, Gojyo?”
I’ll show you ----.
“Do you feel like eating?” That was a very ill-timed Sanzo speaking.
Gojyo titled his head up. Luckily, his secret affection was still his alone. He tried to act like wanting to kiss Hakkai was the furthest thing from his mind. Would have made things way to complicated. He knew the moment was gone and it was likely to never return. This is for the best. Gojyo relaxed his grip while Hakkai laid back down on the bed. “Someone decided they were going to try to go for a walk --- alone.”
Sanzo offered a “Hmmph” as further chastisement.
Cassie over heard the statement by Gojyo, “Oh by the Goddess! Did he re-open anything?”
Gojyo stepped away from Hakkai’s bed and with a solitary tender glance he left the infirmary.
Cassie stepped past Sanzo and checked Hakkai’s bandages. Hakkai laid limp resigning himself to her inspection.
Sanzo looked at Cassie, “Shouldn’t he be stronger by now?”
Cassie answered Sanzo’s question by looking into Hakkai’s eyes, “That depends on his will to live.” Assured Hakkai hadn’t reopened any wounds she went to check on the other patients.
Sanzo looked at Hakkai laying limp in the bed. “I don’t carry excess baggage. I need you.” Sanzo turned and walked around the curtain. Through the curtain Hakkai heard Sanzo speak, “Remember what you told Goku.“ With that, Sanzo left the infirmary.
Hakkai sighed and remembered As long as there are people in this world that believe in me, I will find a way to survive. This time Mr. Dependable was going to stand and walk.
Gojyo was halfway down the hall by the time Sanzo made it through the door. “Gojyo.”
“Yes, Sanzo?” The red-head stopped walking, but did not turn around.
Sanzo walked up to the half-demon, “Hakkai has a death wish, huh?”
“I’m going to put a bell around your neck so we can hear you coming.”
“You’ll die.”
Gojyo chuckled. “I suppose one of these days I will, probably by your hand too.”
They both knew full and well the banishing gun would not kill Gojyo. It might leave him debilitated, but still alive. The sutra, by the nature of call, would not attack any member of the band of brothers. It would cast “enemies” into oblivion. However, Sanzo -- if pushed hard enough -- would surely find a way to eliminate any target. The two men exchanged glances, and began walking toward the mess hall. Caffeine and nicotine was what both of them needed right now.
When they made it to the dining hall, Scarlet and Jorja were no where to be found.
They sat down at a table facing each other, cigarettes were lit and coffee steamed around them. Ae noe not familiar with the group, might wonder how it was that Sanzo became the de facto leader of the group. That person would not understand the meaning behind true leadership. True leadership was beyond charisma. True leaders were not necessarily the strongest, smartest, or the quickest of any group. True leaders deeply understood what it took to get everyone else to perform at their best. True leaders put their companions in position to be as strong as they could and do whatever it was they were best at. Sanzo , as cynical and biting as he was, could do this with expert precision.
Goku woke to the familiar smell of coffee and cigarette smoke. Two smells that although he didn’t enjoy, he’d grown to love. He smiled and sat down next to Sanzo.
Goku eyed Gojyo’s arm. He saw the five red streaks clawed into his arm. “What bit you?”
Gojyo looked at Goku and then remembered his arm. He gently stroked the passion raised on his skin, “Lets just say, I haven’t learned not to play with fire.”
Goku’s head whipped up. “Hakkai!? What are you doing out of bed?”
Sanzo without looking up drew his gun and had it trained on Hakkai.
Hakkai halted his slow painful steps and stared at the gun aimed right between his eyes. Hakuryuu took flight.
“Sanzo, what are you doing?” Goku pleaded.
“What ---the--- fuck?” Gojyo asked.
Sanzo ignored them and took a drag off his cigarette. “Ask yourself Hakkai. Do you want me to pull the trigger? What is it that you are feeling, right this very second?”
There was a heavy pause as Hakkai internalized the rhetorical questions.
Sanzo rotated his head and looked down the barrel of the gun. He pulled the trigger.
The shot rang out like a clap of thunder. It reverberated around the marble walled room. Sanzo’s ears rang. Hakuryuu spat a fireball out at Sanzo.
Hakkai didn’t flinch as he felt the displaced air from the bullet brush his cheek. Fear of death and now… relief.
Sanzo looked at the hole in the wall beside Hakkai. Jorja’s going to be pissed. Fuck it. “Remember this.”
Sanzo dropped his gun and went back to his coffee.
Hakkai sat down in a chair next to Gojyo. Gojyo glared at Sanzo, “That’s a fucked up way to get a point across.”
Hakkai chuckled. “Hell of a priority check. Thanks, I needed that.” The fact that Hakkai the the only person in the entire world that occasionally *needed* a gun fired at him seemed to miss the group.
Sanzo hmmm into his coffee cup, he knew the cup would hide his smile. He was good and he knew it --- being the smug bastard that he was. His odd form of “tough love” was the only thing that could get this group in the proper frame of mind to deal with Gyumaoh and Homura. Although late at night in the dark and alone, he harbored his own internal doubts.
After the loud gun shot, the room seemed overwhelmingly quiet. The creak indicating the opening of the door contrasted that silence in a deafening way. Heads turned as Kyla stepped into the room. Her eyes were down cast. She felt the eyes on her and titled her head up. She saw the four of them and zeroed in on Goku. She whimpered and quickly ran from the room --- slamming the door.
All eyes fell on confused Goku. Sanzo whipped out the fan and cold-cocked Goku, “What did you do?!”
Goku brought his hands to his face more to hide than to rub the pain. “Nothing,” he whimpered.
Gojyo looked at him, “Where did you sleep last night, monkey?”
“In here ….alone. Gods! This shit is so hard!”
The older men exchanged glances.
Hakkai sighed, “What happened, Goku?”
Goku told them about being in her room and their conversation. He told them he was too confused and torn to “do” anything. He told them how he left her alone.
Gojyo sucked his teeth and clacked his tongue, “Let me get this straight. You left the bed of a willing, available and attractive woman?” He sneered.
Goku nodded, “Uh-huh.”
Gojyo pointed at Sanzo “You taught --- no. You!” He pointed at Hakkai “You taught him this shit!” Gojyo sighed and brought his hand to his face, “Oh monkey, monkey, monkey I have failed you.”
Hakkai looked at the table under his hands. He thought about Tasha, “She’s probably feeling a bit hurt and rejected.”
Goku stood up with a jolt, “Should I go talk to her?” His motions tipped over the various condiments on the table and the remainder of Gojyo’s coffee.
The rest of the conversation missed Gojyo as he watched the olive oil mix in with his coffee. He saw the oil separate and bead up on the coffee. It hit him. His ,albeit rudimentary, understanding of chemistry hit him all at once. “Oil! Oh my god!” He laughed and jumped up. “I got it. I damn well got it!”
The three others watched him, knowing they had missed an important part of some conversation. He was grinning like the cat that caught the mouse.
Gojyo looked at Hakkai. We’re not going anywhere today. He laughed and snickered as he left the room, “Oil! It was right there all the time!”
Hakkai looked at Gojyo, “Where are you going?”
Gojyo smiled, “To talk to two sorcerers.”
