Chapter 8: The World Man Hath Wrought
Alex had been having a dream about long corridors and heated moments with a beautiful silver-haired man, when a soft voice pulled at her consciousness. Alex struggled to stay shrouded in the fog of sleep, some pathetic sound of protest escaping her lips as she buried her face in the pillow. A rumbling chuckle reverberated through her and she smiled.
“Speak of the devil.” Alex turned to Abel, pushing her hair aside, as he sat on the edge of the bed.
“Who was speaking? I only heard grumbling.” Abel smiled, his glasses low on his nose. Alex stretched and yawned.
“All right, I suppose I was dreaming of the devil.”
“A devil, am I?” Abel’s face grew a little more serious, as he brushed some wild hairs from her face.
“No, not you, good father. I’m more a devil than you.”
“Ah, so you were dreaming of yourself then?” Abel grinned.
“Huh?” Alex was completely lost for a minute. When she ran the conversation back, she finally saw his point and laughed outright. “Yes, I’ve got beautiful untouchable men all around me, but I sit and dream of myself. My name isn’t really Alexandra, it’s Narcissus.” Abel laughed, a deep genuine sound.
“So, who are all these beautiful untouchable men that are running rampant through your dreams?” Alex laughed as his expression grew darker.
“Oh nobody.”
“Hugue Nobody? Leon Nobody?” Alex bit her lip, stifling a giggle as Abel’s expression grew into a full blown pout. “Tres?” Alex burst out laughing and before she was done, she was crying and clinging to her sides.
“Tres? Abel, you are so paranoid. I won’t lie, Hugue and Leon are both quite attractive, and Tres is endearing in his own way,” Abel put on the greatest look of dejection, “but you are the main focus of my dreams. Forbidden with your beauty. It’s criminal.” Abel’s face lit up with this confession.
“Oh, Alex. You undo me.” Abel nuzzled into her tousled hair, cradling the back of her head. Alex fingered the cross dangling from his large gold collar.
“Wouldn’t mind undoing a few things...” Alex pulled gently and the collar slipped from his throat.
“Alex what are you--” Abel’s question died on his lips as Alex pulled aside the neck of his robes to place warm kisses on his pale throat. Abel made a deep, almost inaudible, whimper as Alex’s tongue met his cool flesh.
“Are you cold, Abel?” Abel’s only reply was to pull Alex tighter against him as her warm breath rendered him somewhat senseless. “I wouldn’t mind keeping you warm.” Alex trailed off as she kissed his throat again, biting him gently. Abel gasped as her teeth met his skin. Alex shuddered in response to the simple noise. Alex moved to loosen Abel’s robes, seeking more physical contact. Abel stopped her, his hands on her wrists.
“Alex, we can’t. Not now. It’s mid-afternoon and I was sent by Lady Catherina to retrieve you. She kindly requests an audience with you.” Alex whined and sighed, giving his throat one last lick before pulling away. Abel’s cheeks were slightly colored, much to Alex’s delight.
“Well, if not now then when?” Abel cleared his throat at her question, his cheeks coloring a little more.
“Well, it hardly seems like the sort of thing one pencils in on their calendar. However, right now there are many priests and nuns about and Cardinal Sforza doesn’t like to be kept waiting. If you aren’t there in timely manner, she will send Tres to retrieve you next.” Alex grinned, tracing the midline of his robes, moving downward slowly.
“I can keep quiet, and it won’t take that long.” It was Abel’s turn to grin as he pushed his glasses up his nose and took hold of Alex’s wrist again.
“I assure, my dear, if we were to continue this to the very end, you wouldn’t be quiet and it wouldn’t be short lived.” Abel kissed the back of her hand and Alex blushed brightly.
“Is it a rain check then?”
“Consider it so.”
With Abel’s promise, Alex got out of bed and began changing, attempting to make herself presentable to the Cardinal. When she emerged quite some time later from the bathroom, Abel had coffee and juice ready on the table, but he stopped fiddling with the glasses the second he caught sight of Alex. Abel stared, his lower jaw floundering on the floor. Alex blushed and lowered her gaze to the floor.
“Is it not proper? I did my best to look becoming.” Abel failed to reply, merely staring at her still and Alex suddenly grew terribly embarrassed, turning toward the bathroom to change her dress. Before she reached the doorway, Abel had his arms on her waist, pulling her back flush against his chest. Alex shuddered at the abrupt contact and closed her eyes.
“You are positively stunning, don’t you dare change.” Abel spoke the words in her ear, his bangs tickling her bare shoulder. Abel took her shoulders and turned her to face him while he took in her dress from head to toe. She wore a long black skirt that fell to her ankles, and a teal corset with a black lace overlay. The corset was more modest than her last, and she looked quite regal in it. Her hair was mostly pulled up into a tight bun, but some was left to cascade down the back of her neck. She wore a black beaded choker that had tendrils of beads reaching almost to her corset. With her throat half covered and her shoulders bare, she offered quite the sight to Abel’s sore eyes. Abel ran his fingers up the small expanse of skin from the choker to her jaw line and brought them around to the nape of her neck. Alex melted into his touch, bowing her head slightly to offer him more access. Something inside of Abel ached to forget the meeting that was ahead of them, but he knew it couldn’t be done. He prayed the night would come soon and that they would have the opportunity to finish what Alex had started that morning.
“You don’t think it’s overdone? I just wanted to be presentable.”
“You are beautiful. I wish I didn’t have to present you to anyone just now.” Abel idly played with a long strand of free hair. “I didn’t know you’re hair was straight.”
“Well, I’ve had it just piled up on top of my head the last week or so. And the first two nights we spoke I had it curled.” Abel leaned towards her under the guise of inspecting her hair.
“The red streaks are gone as well.”
“Yes, I used some stuff to cover it up. I didn’t want to look like street punk.” Abel smiled, leaning in closer.
“Your eyes look more blue-green with the red gone. Before they looked grey.”
“I’ve been told they change rather dramatically depending on what I compliment my look with.”
Abel nodded, finally closing the distance to kiss Alex. Alex braced herself with her hands on Abel’s chest. He was holding her tightly and the warmth of his fingers on her back made her shudder. When Abel pulled back, his expression was almost desperate. Abel stepped back to arms length and smiled weakly at Alex.
“Well, Alexandra, if you’re ready to go.” Alex sighed quietly and took some of the coffee and juice before grabbing her long leather coat and leaving for Cardinal Sforza’s chambers. Alex followed Abel across the vast compound toward the Lady’s office, her boots clicking smartly as they went. Many of the clergy that passed them nodded their heads in respect to Alex, and she wondered if any of them had given her and Hugue such a wide birth not long ago. Could a little hair color and drastic make-up really make that big of a difference? Abel glanced over at her on occasion and began counting the earrings she had in each ear. As they rounded the corner, he used the opportunity to switch sides and count the opposite ear. In total, she had three pairs in her lobes, each tragus pierced, a single cartilage on the left, a bar through the cartilage of the right, another single midway up her right, and a helix piercing on her left. She had them all adorned with diamonds. He was quite impressed with the amount of metal she had fit in her ears.
“Alexandra, when did you begin piercing your ears?”
“When I was very young, too young to remember, my mother had my first pair done. I got the next pair at sixteen and I began adding one every year or so.”
“Don’t piercings hurt?”
“Of course they do.”
“Then why do you continue to hurt yourself?”
“Pain is nothing. Pain can bring detachment, or it can bring pain. I did this because I felt it was beautiful, and I ignore the pain to achieve it. Some people enjoy the pain of piercings and proclaim it’s somewhere closer to pleasure. For me, this isn’t true. It is painful, but I can always detach myself from the situation, should I chose to. Plus, I’ve always had a great piercer and it’s only momentary pain.”
“I must say, they are rather beautiful, catching even the weakest light as they do.”
“Thank you, Abel. That’s sweet.”
Before Abel could respond, Tres broke into the conversation from a few feet away.
“Father Nightroad, status report.”
“We are all well, Tres, thank you. Is Lady Catherina ready?”
“Affirmative, Cardinal Sforza awaits your presence, as well as Father Wordsworth, Sister Kate, Sister Esther, Father Watteau, Father Havel, and Leon”. Tres opened the door for the two of them and Alex took a deep breath, feeling a wave of nausea slam into the pit of her stomach. As they entered the room, everyone stood to greet Abel and Alex. Alex did a slight curtsy and inclined her head, waiting to be addressed by the Cardinal.
"Hello, Alexandra. I have been hearing for some time now that you have quite an interesting piece of information for me.”
“Your Eminence, thank you for your time and patience. I know I gave everyone little information when I first came to the Vatican, but I wanted to be positive that what I had to say was correct and would reach the right ears.”
“Quite an admirable sentiment. Patience is a virtue, and one I do not mind exercising for those who carry information that could be of import to the AX.”
“Thank you, Your Eminence.” Alex inclined her head again, noting in her peripheral vision that the others had taken their seats and that Abel was too far back to properly see.
"It is my pleasure. Now, what is this information that you’ve found after so many years of searching?”
“Quite honestly, Your Eminence, I have found the cure to Vampirism.”
The room was deathly quiet and the Cardinal examined her coolly from behind her monocle.
“Are you quite certain of what you’ve just told me?”
“Yes, Your Eminence.”
“How is it you believe that you’ve found the cure?”
“I have found the notes of the woman who created the virus to begin with. As the final chapter to these notes, and to repent for what she saw as the downfall of man, she worked hard to find a cure. I believe this is why she was murdered. In the late twentieth century, there was an outbreak of a new virus, one the likes of which man had never seen before. It would begin with flu like symptoms over a period of days, maybe weeks, and then the victim would recover and go about their lives. However, years later they would begin contracting rare opportunistic diseases and showing signs of immune system failure. The governments knew of the virus’ potential for destruction, but they stood idly by as more and more people grew sick.
“They finally discovered that the virus was transmitted through blood and body fluids, both of which made for public discussion of very private topics. The governments, having a predominantly Christian view, and not wanting to promote seemingly unchristian practices, failed to educate its peoples. As a result, by the early twenty-first century the infection rate was reaching catastrophic levels around the world. The virus was constantly mutating, different strains recombining and creating highly resistant strains. The governments finally agreed that education and research were the only things that would stop this deadly virus and so they set their best geneticists to work in the worlds best labs.
“At first scientists tried using viral and bacterial vectors with disease fighting protein codes, but this soon took a tragic turn. La Force’s last viral vector utilized the virus’ own coding for proliferation and targeted the same cells the virus did, while reducing it’s inclination for recombination. However, she was not counting on seeing the clearest evidence of evolutionary leaping anyone had ever seen. Inexplicably, the virus jumped host cells and spontaneously mutated to overcome her recombination inhibitions. The virus had moved its main host cell from immune system white blood cells to red blood cells. This evolutionary leap resulted in radically different symptoms.
“The virus destroyed red blood cells at such an accelerated rate that it drove the sufferer to ingest the red blood cells of others. This in turn led to the symbiotic relationship we currently see in the situation of all Methuselahs. The super human strength they exhibit is caused by the virus which repairs minor everyday damages to tissue and goes above and beyond repair to heighten those senses and abilities that normal human possess. The Methuselahs had to be more powerful than their prey, or they would have died and the virus would have died with its host. The treatment with viral vectors had shown promise in the early years and so many were treated with it, only to see this devastating turn about many years later. All traces of the original virus had died with their hosts and some original victims were ‘lucky’ enough to have their strain recombined with the new strain, making them Methuselah. La Force had indeed succeeded in destroying the original virus, but in turn brought about the worse of two evils, that being vampirism. Though the scientific community had uplifted her as a hero for her viral vector, they now shunned her for it’s delayed failure.
“It was decades in coming, and many men, women, and children died, but Mrs. La Force was the head of the team from Albion who finally discovered the key to subduing the virus. They could not fight the virus by genetically modifying other viral codes nor any bacterial codes. The virus mutated so often and at so many points within it’s genome, that any benefits from such gene therapy were minimal and temporary. So, La Force turned to nano-technology. Many governments remarked that her theories would never work, but she found support in Albion. She was given a full staff and run of a lab, and with round the clock work, she and her team soon developed biologically based nano-machines with the world’s first artificial intelligence.
“They decided to modify the human genetic code to create the ideal human. The genome for a male was built and the genome for a female was built, one chemical base pair at a time. However, while the male child grew in a test tube, it curiously split in the earliest stages of development, creating twins. One was kept for research in Albion, the other was sent to what was then called Germany. The female specimen stayed in Albion with the male and La Force’s team watched them grow. The team waited, watching as the specimens grew into children and La Force began taking personal interest in them. She fancied herself their mother as they were doomed to be raised in the lab.
“The German lab had used chemicals to speed the growth of their charge and he was ‘born’ much sooner than his brother and sister. They pressured the Albion group to create a female for them, claiming that it was only right that they have a specimen of each gender, as the Albion group did. Reluctantly, La Force’s team began work on another female specimen, and eventually sent her to the lab in Germany. They once again treated their specimen with chemicals, this time in greater doses and higher concentrations, but she was rumored to have been stunted latter on, supposedly due to this growth treatment.
“At the age of fifteen all four subject were injected with the wildtype virus, at that time, the wildtype vampire virus. After their symptoms settled, and their viral codes recorded, all four were given nano-machines, each with their own AI that was capable of detecting their own cell markers. However, they were not counting on the AI recognizing the virus as a beneficial symbiote.
“The AI within these test subjects began to encourage the virus and the subjects began needing fresh blood cells at an accelerated rate. They became stronger than the average methuselah and again, the scientists witnessed evolutionary leaps as the nano-machines fused with the virus and all the subjects developed new appendages, namely wings. In a last ditch effort to prevent the AI from allowing the virus to evolve further, the lab technicians programmed the nano-machines to recognize the voice of their carriers, giving them the ability to activate or deactivate the machines. All four subjects could now appear human and the symptoms faded when the nano-machines were in their resting state. The cure to the virus was finally in their hands.
“Both labs were in the final monitoring stages when Armageddon laid waste to most of the world. The test subjects were the sole survivors in both their labs and they came together, using the power of the nano-machines to help those in need. They may have single-handedly saved the remaining peoples of Europe. La Force was in another country, presenting her findings to another government when Armageddon descended on Europe. She was proud to see her test subjects using their abilities to help the fallen, and the world watched as her angels nursed the survivors.
“They were chosen to head a mission to Mars in order to terra form the planet and make a new home for humans and Methuselahs, as Earth had become toxic with the aftermath of Armageddon. However, their attempt was unsuccessful and upon their return, they were met with much scorn from the humans, who suffered much more than the Methuselah who were able to regenerate from the damage caused by the Earth’s new carcinogenic environment. The Germanic male subject in particular, named Cain, was quite enraged at their poor reception and picked a fight with a mob, days after returning home. In order to survive the barrage of humans, he fused at one hundred percent and it is said that the nano-machines took over. The first female subject, named Lilith, tried to prevent Cain from decimating the few survivors they had struggled to save in the first place. In his rage, Cain killed her. The remaining subjects overpowered him and destroyed him. Their names were Seth... and Abel.”
The room was completely silent. Alexandra paused unable to even hear anyone’s breathing. She suddenly felt strangely detached from this little office, as though she were somewhere else, in another time, watching these events take place as she described them. Someone shifted restlessly and Alex found the courage to meet Cardinal Sforza’s eyes.
“La Force was devastated to see what her... son had done. She disappeared from the public eye then and finished the work on her notes, returning to viral vectors for an alternative cure to the virus. All the computer data on the nano-machine process that she had collected had been destroyed along with her lab, and most anyone who worked on the project was killed. La Force began with new fervor to find the answer, quickly realizing that if someone else were treated with the nano-machines and fused with them permanently, that we would all be stuck on a downward spiral wherein the cure was always worse than the disease. I have the chemical make-up of what La Force believed to be the viral vector that could cure the vampire virus once and for all.”
The room was still silent as Alex finished and bowed her head to the Cardinal, awaiting her judgement of the situation.
“How in the world did you even know whose notes to look for if these findings were never published?” Lady Catherina’s face was a mask of blatant shock. Alex’s brow furrowed, her face flushing horribly. She began to tremble visibly as she raised her head once more to look Catherina in the eyes.
“She was my foremother, and her secret had been kept in my family since Armageddon.”
Kate and Esther gasped, William dropped his pipe, Vaclav made the sign of the cross, Leon whistled quietly and Hugue’s eyes actually widened in shock. At the apex of a half circle of chairs, directly behind Alex, Abel could feel his head reeling and his stomach roiling. He now knew why Alexandra looked so familiar.
