chapter 8: pets and furnitures
The next days went peaceful, though Raven gave up on befriending with Ryo.
Eventually he was fed up with avoiding Raoul. He and joined him in the evenings like before.
Of all people it was Raoul who he depended on the most. It was an absolute scream but there remained nobody else.
Danae and his comrades where dead, Katze had abandoned him, Janus was sold and Kyle a cutting pain in his stomach.
Little by little Raven's guard dropped in the presence of the Blondie.
He dared from time to time to broach market issues and sometimes Raoul discussed them with him.
He became comfortable in Raoul's presence.
If the Blondie only would stop, playing with his hair.
The mongrel still longed for freedom and distraction but there was no home to return to. Raven longed for Katze.
The dealer occupied most of his thoughts. There was no helping it, Raven felt deeply hurt.
He still sat on the library steps, reading in a book when Kyle made his every evening appearance.
A young pet followed him, dressed only in chains.
My special pet. You will get to know him soon.
Kyle smiled knowingly.
The pet was smaller than Raven, his red hair reached to his shoulders and his silver colored irises missed a degraded pupil.
A Feron.
„His name is Kris. A prototype, that Mr. Hazall noble granted as a gift to me.”
Ryo handed Kyle a glass of Denovian Altas: „Shall I take care of your pet, Sir Kyle?”
“Actually not, he will join us.”
Raven observed the Feron with suspicion. He was fearful and didn't seem to understand a single word.
He closed his book and addressed him directly:
„Aruhan, Kurisu. Ye wa-at wa Raven.”
Kyle turned to Raoul: „He speaks Feron. Not exactly a suiting dialect but surprising enough.”
Kyle unhooked the chains from his wrist and Kris moved to Raven. At least someone who understood.
„A prototype?”
„The eye color is shifting every full moon. Strange little thing, isn't it?“
Raven rolled his eyes: „He's not a thing – he is a living being!“
Raoul shot him a warning glance and Kyle mocked as always:
„You made a playmate, Kris.”
As soon as the Blondies were caught up in a conversation, Raven begged:
„Ryo, please bring him a blanket, he's cold.”
The furniture nodded and retrieved the requested item.
Raven gently wrapped the other boy up and introduced Ryo to him.
"Do you really understand him?"
"A little bit. He speaks high-standard, I only worker-style."
"Where did you learn it?"
"The dock area."
Kris eyed him with big round eyes. He never saw black hair. He touched it.
Great, the next one mistaking me for a puppy.
"rae te."
Kris moved his hand away.
"Syria el reon?"
"No you haven't angered me. I just don't like it."
He had no idea how to translate it properly. He simply shook his head.
The Feron cuddled up to him and closed his eyes. He was so tired.
???
Raven went on reading. So far so good. The pet seemed nice.
He missed Kyle preparing to leave and calling for his pet.
The Blondie already stood in front of them, a crop in his hand.
A crop? Mean fucker! ... A crop!
Raven jumped to his feet between master and pet:
„He wasn't about to disobey you! He didn't understand you!“
„He will learn.“
Kyle drove into the little pet and Raven got his share too.
Both screamed.
Holy shit! That burnt like hell!
„Enough, Kyle. I won't tolerate such a barbaric method of punishment in my household. Please leave.”
„Ryo!”
The furniture rushed to Ravens side.
„He collapsed.”
Kyle pushed Ryo aside and took the little pet harshly from the mongrel's arm.
Ryo waited for Kyle to walk out of earshot, before he stated:
"Poor little thing."
He touched Raven's arms, where the skin was broken. He felt even pity for him.
„He got you pretty hard.”
The surge of adrenalin prevented Raven for a few more moments from the stinging pain but he was glad to hear Raoul say:
„Attend to his wounds and see to a pain reliever.”
Raoul pinched the bridge of his nose, brooding about something.
Only the computer screen provided light. It already went dark outside.
Raven stood silently in the port. The Blondie didn't realize him.
„It's four in the morning, Raoul. Go to bed."
Raoul rubbed his strained eyes:
„This late? I wasn't paying attention."
He turned a light on:
„Come here. I want to have a look at your injuries.“
„It's not bad. Ryo applied an aerosol band aid.“
The screen caught his attention:
„Bad news?“
„Hazall extends his sojourn. He requested permission for permanent commercial representation.“
„Has Jupiter ever given permission for permanent representatives?”
„No, but Hazall's reasoning is quite persuasive. The matter can't be easily dropped.”
Raven sighed heavy:
„I don't understand diplomacy and politics, but it is Hazall. Decline!”
Raoul stroke some unruly bangs out of his face:
„Sometimes I get the impression, you truly are concerned for me.”
The boy gifted him with a smile: „Course I am.”
„Whatever Hazall is up to, it's not enough time to detect it before the hearing.”
Despite Raven's wanting to avoid the dealer, he suggested:
„Let me handle this with Katze.”
As if a hurricane crossed it.
Three new terminals were established.
Clouds of smoke filled the room. Since Katze couldn't hold his hands still without his cigarettes, Raoul allowed the smoking.
The library looked very much like Katze's hideout.
Raoul and Kyle sat on opposite sites of the pallet, which Raven lay on.
The dealer tortured his keyboard and lit himself one cigarette after another.
Kyle, for once taciturn, sipped his wine and read in one of Raoul's books until Katze's voice broke the silence:
„He is providing data.“
Kyle stepped over and looked at the different data streams on the screens.
„Your little mongrel has a wicked mind.“
He turned to Katze: „Do you have the same abilities?“
The redhead deigned not even a look at Kyle when he stated in the same even and casual tone he'd say something about the weather:
„We are an effective combination.”
Kyle was tempted to see behind the façade behind those amber eyes.
Playing with Raoul's things turned out to be much more fun, he'd expected.
He took one of Katze's cigarettes and sat down in front of another terminal.
Raven was providing very fast and in incomplete sequences.
Kyle put the pieces together as fast as possible. He accelerated the progress immensely and
Raoul was not a little intrigued with the sight.
This was entirely not his field as biotechnologist.
By morning they collected - and to be honest produced - enough data to throwback the off-worlders.
Equipped with new informations both Blondies looked forward to the syndicate hearing.
Raoul's tension turned into a pleasant chill in his neck.
It was the same with Kyle. The predatory instincts, they possessed as Blondies, started working.
You wouldn't want to be their target.
Katze was pleased with the outcome too, but to leave Raven behind was a drop of bitterness.
“You did good.”
Raven rolled over to face the wall:
“Unless you are not here to bring me home, you are not welcome.”
I get, what I deserve.
“How is your head?”
“Get out!”
“I have work for you.”
He left a portable unit on Raven's small desk.
“Give me the low down and get out then.”
Katze pointed to the unit and left. Raven sent a pillow flying behind him.
He wanted to bang his head against the wall. He got up and made for the kitchen.
“What do you want, mongrel?”
Raven rolled his eyes. He was not in the mood to quarrel with Ryo.
There's another furniture on the floor.
“Wow, you look exactly like Janus described you.”
“I hope, you are like Janus described you. I am in desperate need of a painkillers and coffee.”
“You must do something for me in return.”
“Sure thing.”
Coba led him to the kitchen. He started coffee and retrieved a pill against the headache. Raven was better within moments
"Are you hungry?”
“A little.”
Coba smiled. He liked cooking the most about his furniture tasks:
“I will fix something.”
“You are an angel.”
“I wondered which time you run into problems with Ryo.”
“He hates me.”
“He hates every of Raoul's pets.”
The food smelled delicious and the coffee was indeed from the very best.
Raven relished every sip.
“Another cup?”
He nodded.
“Janus often talked about you. He liked you.”
“May I ask you something personal?”
Coba topped up coffee: “We were lovers.”
“Oh.”
“I still think of him. It scares me but I can't stop. I miss him.”
Raven took his hand. The last month must have been a torture to Coba.
“He was sold to an ambassador from Miracan. I'm sorry.”
“That's good. They don't tire fast of their furnitures.”
A muffled sound from the side wing garnered their interest. It was the little Feron pet but he ran away instead of coming nearer.
Coba hung his shoulders and sighed:
“Please, tell him, that he doesn't have to be afraid of me!”
“Is he always like this?”
“Yes and it drives me crazy.”
“Which room?”
“The third on the right side.”
Raven rose and roamed to the side wing.
“Kuris?”
The little pet threw himself into his arms. It yet took him a while to convince the Feron to leave the room.
He was extremely shy and timid.
“Coba let me introduce you. This is Kris. Kuris, hien wa at-ta Coba.”
He encouraged the little one to greet. To no avail. The Feron only turned his head away and buried his face into Raven's chest.
“Do you see my problem? I shall teach him Amoian but I have absolutely no idea how. He always runs away. Help me!”
The chime ringed. Raven wasn't fast enough to prevent Kris from running away.
Coba sighed and went to the door.
“Where is the mongrel?”
“Hello Ryo, come in.”
Ryo pushed him out of the way, although Coba already invited him in.
“What do you think, you are doing here, stupid mongrel?”
Raven ignored him and turned to Coba: “Do you see my problem?”
The blue haired furniture nodded.
“See you Coba.”
Ryo fumed: “You will regret this.”
“Surely. Tell your master, you are not able to watch over his pet.”
“Shut up!”
Regardless of Ryo's prohibition Raven met Coba and Kris every day.
Kris was supposed to be the other rare pet on stage.
„Aruhan, Kurisu.“
„Hi, Raven!“
The Feron greeted him with a hug. He looked terribly pale.
"What's wrong with you?"
Coba explained: „The color-exchange. Bring him to his room, please.“
Raven impelled Kris to lay down. He stroke his hair while Coba undressed him carefully.
"Is it always that painful?"
„The second moon gives him a hard time.“
Waves of spasm rocked Kris' body. He nearly puke on the floor.
Coba injected a tranquilizer into his carotid and dimmed the light.
Kris grabbed Raven's hand:
„Stay with me!“
The mongrel glanced a probing look at Coba, who nodded approval:
„The hearing ends at nine. Call me, when you need something!“
Raven slid into the bed behind the Feron and rocked him gently:
„Hush, Kris. I will stay until you sleep.“
