Chapter Eight
********
Shuich kept his eyes closed long after he had awakened. The only warmth he felt was radiating from the two bodies surrounding him, so he knew it was not yet morning. Finally, he opened his eyes and slowly lifted his head to glance at the clock. Yup, it was only just eleven in the evening. Was this day never to end? Sighing, he slowly sat up, not wanting to disturb his two sleeping friends. He blushed as he realized he’d fallen asleep naked with nothing but a towel covering him. He crept from the bed and made his way to his closet and pulled on shorts and a t-shirt, then turned to face the bed again. It looked like he wouldn’t be able to get back into his spot. Sakuma-san had already moved and was now snuggled with Umiko, his hand lying on her breast. Shuichi chuckled to himself. Sakuma-san, you horn dog, he thought. He walked back and was just about to lie down on the other side of Sakuma when he saw movement from the corner of his eye and foze. Yuki stood in the doorway, quietly watching him.
Yuki realized he’d been seen. He’d been standing there, watching as Shuichi woke and dressed. I suppose I wasn’t quiet enough, he thought to himself.
“Shuichi,” he whispered.
Shuichi shuffled his way slowly to him.
“Yes? What is it?”
“I’m so sorry. I’ve been such an ass...”
“Yes, you have.”
“What’s going to happen to us?”
Shuichi sighed softly and looked Yuki in the eye.
“I don’t know,” he whispered. “I don’t know.”
“Shuichi...I...I love you.”
“Just not enough. You don’t love me enough. Not enough to trust me. And you don’t love yourself enough. Not enough to trust yourself.” Shuichi slowly closed the door and returned to the bed. He would try to sleep. He didn’t want to think about things tonight.
********
I’ve lost him, Yuki thought. Dear God, I’ve lost him. He wanted to open the door and rush into that room. He wanted to hold Shuichi tighter than he’d ever held him. Kiss him harder than he’d ever been kissed. But, he couldn’t. He couldn’t because Shuichi had been right. He’d been too paranoid, too insecure to just tell him what was going through his mind. It was ridiculous to feel threatened by Umiko, in any way. So why couldn’t he have just said so? He took a deep breath, let it out and went to the living room to sit. He intended to drink and chain smoke until he passed out.

She felt a slight pressure on her chest. Blinking her eyes open, she saw a sleeping and slightly drooling Sakuma Ryuichi. She looked down and saw his hands groping her. She smacked his hand away and he startled awake as well.
“What did you do that for, Umi-chan?”
“My breasts are not your squeeze toys. Where’s your damn doll?”
“I don’t know. And shhhhhh, Shuichi-kun is sleeping.”
She was about to tell him she didn’t really care who was sleeping when she was groped in her sleep when she heard her phone vibrating on the night stand.
“Oooooo, Umi-chan’s phone vibrates! I wonder why?” Ryuichi said with a mischeivous glint in his eyes.
Umiko snorted and rolled her eyes before glancing at the phone to see who was calling her before she answered.
“Yes, Nakano-san?”
“Oh, it’s Nakano-san now is it? There must be people there.”
“Yes. What can I do for you?”
Hiro sighed, he hated it when they had to pretend to be formal. “I’m just calling to make sure everything’s alright. I’m on my way to the train station. Evidently, Ayaka decided that tonight would be good for a visit. She asked about Shuichi and I told her he was feeling depressed.”
“That’s an understatement.”
“Yeah, well. I’m good at understatement. So, she’s decided that Shuichi needs to go have fun. And after I pick her up, we’ll be over there to get him.”
“Well, Sakuma-san’s here too. You’ll have to take him as well or he’ll throw a temper tantrum.”
Ryuichi’s eyes began to water. “I will NOT!” he shouted. Shuichi jumped.
“Will not what?” he asked, eyes wide.
Umiko sighed. Great, she thought.
“I’ll have them ready for you .”
“Alright. Are you ok?”
“Yes, I’m fine.”
“Good. I love...”
Umiko quickly hung up. As much as she’d like to hear someone say they loved her at this moment, it didn’t seem right. Especially since the someone she wanted to hear it from was going to pick up his girlfriend from the station. She turned to a confused Shuichi and an almost in tears Ryuichi.
“Nakano-san and Ayaka-chan are coming by. They want to take Shuichi out. Just have some fun to try and forget today. You too Sakuma-san,” she added before the water works could start.
“I don’t know that I really want to,” Shuichi said.
“Yes you do!” Ryuichi shouted, bouncing on the bed. “Yes you do! It’ll be fun! And we’ll dance and we’ll drink and we’ll sing karaoke!”
Ryuichi began to drag Shuichi to the closet to find what he called “party hardy” clothes.
“Sakuma! Stop trying to rip my clothes off!” Shuichi laughed.
“I’ll be just outside you two,” Umiko said. “Please try not to molest or grope Shuichi while I’m out.”
“You’re no fun,” Ryuichi said, sticking his out his tongue.
“What are you going to do?” Shuichi asked.
“There’s still a lot of glass on the floor. I’ll just clean it up,” she said and left the room.
**********************
After retrieving a broom, she made her way to the living room. The room was dark, but she could see all the glass sparkling in the moonlight. Sighing, she slowly began sweeping, creating a small pile of tiny glass shards.
“You forgot this.”
She turned her head slowly to the right to see Eiri standing next to her, cigarette smoldering in one hand, a dust bin dangling from the other.
“Thank you,” she said, reaching for the dust bin.. She didn’t expect him to kneel down on the floor, waiting for her to sweep the shards into it. Umiko blinked in surprise and then decided to just continue sweeping. She blinked again when Eiri took the dust bin and the broom back to the kitchen.
Why is he suddenly being so nice to me, she thought. Her feet were glued to the spot. She glanced over toward the couch and saw the overflowing ashtray and empty beer cans on the table. How long had he been there, she wondered. She paled at the thought that suddenly crossed her mind. Had he seen the three of them in the bedroom? A naked Shuichi sandwiched between herself and Sakuma? Umiko brought a trembling hand to her forehead, waves of anxiety flowing through her. Now, she knew she had to move. She needed to sit down and she needed to do it now. She took two small steps before she felt a sharp pain in her heel.
“Ow! Damnit!” she cried as she looked down at the bloody spot.
Eiri chose that moment to come back to the living room. “What?” he asked worry flickering across his face.
That’s odd, she thought. Is Eiri actually worried about me? Instead she looked a bit sheepish and said, “I guess I didn’t get all the glass off of the floor.”
Eiri crossed the room and knelt down to inspect her injured foot. He gingerly held her ankle and raised the foot to get a better look.
“I don’t think you’ll need stitches. But, it does need to be bandaged.” Before she could reply she suddenly felt herself lifted off the ground. She was so surprised she clung to his neck to keep from losing her balance.
“What are you doing?! I can walk over there on my own you know!”
“I don’t want you trailing blood across the floor.”
Unfortunately, Eiri misjudged how sober he was. He stumbled on his way to the couch, tripping over Sakuma’s missing Kumagoro. It was like a bad slow motion scene from a movie. She watched the couch come slowly toward her and she felt herself tighten her grip around Eiri’s neck. Somewhere in the distance she heard a shout that she figured was either her own voice or Eiri’s. She closed her eyes before she hit the cushions and opened them just as Eiri landed on her with a muffled “ooomph”.
Umiko tried to slow her breathing down to a normal rate.
“Are you alright?” she asked him. “And do you want to get your face out of my chest?”
He turned a bright crimson and quickly raised his head. “I’m sorry,” he muttered. “And yes, I’m alright.” Then, a smile slowly grew on his face and he began chuckling softly to himself. “Well, this isn’t a position I expected to find myself in today.”
Umiko smiled back at him. “You and me both.” She paused for a moment before she decided to ask him, “Yuki-san? What is going on?”
“That’s what I’d like to know.”
Umiko and Eiri turned there heads in the direction of the voice. It seemed Hiro and Ayaka had arrived and decided to let themselves in.

I'm soooooooo sorry at how long this took me. And yes, while life did sort of get in the way, I can't use that as an excuse. Frankly, my Death Note obsession has completely taken over. I blame L...and Light...and also L and Light together. Also, thank you to my wonderful reviewers. You're the ones that are really keeping me from abandoning this. I still have my moments of "oh my god, I suck!" But just knowing that there's someone out there that's enjoying my work makes this worth it. Once this is finished though, expect a Death Note fic. But, that'll be a while from now.
