The devil

Part 7

Year 2716½.

As Kirkland returned to the deck everything seemed a mess. His men were fighting with one another to get the best view of whatever had crashed down into the ocean. He made a face of annoyance as he pushed his way in between the crew that had gathered at the stern of the ship. “Let me through, it’s an order!” Kirkland elbowed his way to the front where he stiffened like stone.

There, in the middle of the water they had just left behind, was a huge, floating bird, shining in the sun. From it’s stomach people were tripping out, all dressed in some kind of orange jackets, screaming and waving their arms up in the air. Kirkland’s eyes widened as he realised they were waving at them.

“What is this?” His voice was breathless. He shook the head in disbelief. “What is this? Where did that come from?”

“It fell down from the sky, captain.” Kirkland turned to face the man who’d answered. Said man moved a step back, a nervous red colour flushed across his cheeks. “I… It came rather soundless. There was a bright light, then it just appeared and landed.”

“You’re not telling me it was sent from the sky?” The man nodded. Kirkland’s eyes narrowed as he turned to look at the huge bird again. “There’s no way that’s from Heaven. I’m afraid we’re dealing with the rather opposite.” A shudder went through the crew.

“Are you saying-?”

“That’s a gift from the devil himself,” Kirkland spat. He turned around and started to move towards the stairs down with hasty steps, withdrawing his pistol as he did so. “Shoot the living! They’re not humans, they’re servants of the devil. Show no mercy, get rid of them and set sails, quickly!”

“Captain?” Kirkland threw a short look over the shoulder. Merrin, who’ve spoken up, nervously looked down, tripping at the spot. “Where will you be going?”

“Down to shoot the devil himself.”
