“Just put it on my tab, Tae,” Sano said nervously, not sure if Tae was going to put up a fuss about Sano’s growing debt at the Akabeko. It was a good thing for Sano that the restaurant was busy at the time, because Tae barely gave him any notice and let Sano slide without paying—again.
Sano felt good for a change. Nothing like a hot soak and a massage at the furoya to fix a person’s physical state and relax one’s mind.
“I’ll take a stroll past Saitou’s and check up on the place for him,” Sano said out loud, as he always had a habit of carrying on a conversation with himself—especially when he was undecided and had to figure something out. “Never know about thieves now days.”
The roadways filtered out quickly toward the late afternoons. Families gathered in their homes to start their evening meals, and the farmers scurry around to finish off the remainder of daylight by gathering their work tools for storage. It was the calm part of day, when peace returned to the, otherwise, hectic way of life for Tokyo’s people.
As Sano strolled leaving the town behind him, the hectic sounds were being replaced with birds tending to their nests to prepare for the soon coming nightfall. He listened to the crickets chirping to one another on their quests to find a mate. Life was all around Sano and it added to his positive state of mind. If it weren’t for missing Saitou, life for Sano would have been as close to perfection as he thought perfection should be.
Sano rounded the bend just before Saitou’s home came into view. He remembered the frantic state of mind he was in the day he found out that Saitou was still alive. It was a nightmare, yet a dream that became reality. The images of Sano stumbling up this very same roadway, falling face first at Saitou’s feet in his garden in front of his home came back to haunt. It was enough to make Sano cringe!
“Shit, it’s no wonder why Saitou calls me ‘Ahou’,” Sano said to himself. “Why do I have to be such a shit-head and embarrass myself all the time?”
Just ahead of Sano was Saitou's garden. The mere sight had Sano's heart skipping a beat. The wolf's absence weighed heavily and seemed to crush the air right out of him. That garden held a lot of memories for Sano and seeing it there before him had his mind swimming with a diversity of thoughts.
“Saitou, what is it about you that I can’t seem to shake?” Sano helplessly tried to figure it out. “I’ve never gone crazy over ANYONE before in my life, but I’m actually screwed up in my mind over this whole damn thing!”
Sano passed Saitou’s garden and denied the urge to stop. He knew that if he did take a moment in the garden, the memories would overwhelm him and put him right back in the mood he was in before he went to the furoya. The young man passed the garden and kept walking, believing that he will be seeing the wolf in a few days. Just a few more days to hang in there, he thought, either way, it’ll all be over.

“I will be in contact with you soon, Mitsu,” Saitou bowed. He gestured to the carriage driver to place the lady's luggage down just beyond the front entrance.
Mitsu walked over to Saitou and looked up at him with the most gentlest smile upon her beautiful, yet somewhat tired face and said, “It has been an interesting carriage ride and I am looking forward to working with you, Mr. Fujita.”
“Interesting it was, Mitsu. I think we have come to understand one another better, wouldn’t you say?” Saitou shifted his eyes from her to the carriage, and then back again. “Now, I must be on my way and allow you to get some rest. We both have a lot of work ahead of us, come tomorrow.”
Mitsu stood at the inn’s entrance and admired the man she had spent the day with in the carriage. Such a strong mysterious fellow, yet there was a part of him that Mitsu wanted to reach. “Ahhh Mr. Fujita, I do feel your loneliness,” she whispered as she watched Saitou get into the carriage.
The driver set the carriage door latch, looked at Saitou through the window from the outside and asked, “Sir?” The driver awaited orders.
“Station, no stops on the way,” Saitou answered and leaned back in his seat. He was glad to be back in Tokyo and even relieved that he wasn’t away as long as he first anticipated. He smiled and then began to laugh out loud shaking his head from side to side in disbelief how his life seemed to be turning around.

It was very obvious that Sano didn't spare any force in sliding his apartment door shut. All of his neighbors in that little compound must have heard Sano arrive home, for he was far from being quiet.
“I hate doing the wash!” Sano exclaimed as he stripped off his gi and replaced it with a red *yukata trimmed with black. Sano took his gi outside and threw it in a wash bin. He added a bucket of hot water he just purchased from an old lady just a few doors down who makes hot water available for the neighbors to supplement her income. He watched the steam rise from the batch of clothes in the hot water, consumed with thoughts of how his life had turned out so far.
The young man's attention was diverted to the narrow lane leading from his small room apartment. He listened to his neighbor’s muffled chatter and other unrecognizable racket that stole away the peace he felt earlier while out in the country. Sano shook his head, sighed and mumbled to himself, “I’m going to have to find me a place out in the country.”

“So, is this is what we’re paying you for?” Saitou questioned Cho as he walked into the office and caught Cho in one of his daydream state of mind.
Cho instantly stood straight up out of his seat, obviously startled to see Saitou enter the room. “Mr. Fujita, Sir!” Cho screamed out in surprise with his mouth gaping wide open.
“Relax Cho,” said Saitou; “I wasn’t expecting to see you here at all.” Saitou walked past Cho’s desk and went into his office. He wasn't in the mood for conversation, so he shut the door behind him and hoped that by doing so, would buy some time alone.
The wolf placed his folders on his desk and reached in his pocket for a cigarette, lit it and sat down in his seat behind his desk. He drew the smoke between his lips and inhaled deeply then exhaled a thin line of smoke into the air. It was time to work. He retrieved writing paper from his top desk drawer and was about to place it on top of his desk in preparation to write out the report on Nikko, but the man's desk was cluttered.
Saitou sighed and thought, It is impossible for me to think clearly and work in a pig sty.
The wolf commenced to clear the top of his desk. He picked up the folders in front of him and notices a piece of folded paper under it. Before he dismissed it, he read:
Saitou… Important… We need to talk… Sano.
“Moron,” Saitou muttered and brought the cigarette to his lips again. His tongue danced on the cigarette’s end before the wolf inserted it between his lips and pulled the smoke into him. Saitou exhaled, smiled and whispered, “Ahou.” Saitou folded the note the way he found it and tucked it into his pocket. He was tempted to run out and find Sano right then, but curbed the temptation to do so.
It didn't matter how tantalizing the idea of seeing Sano was. Saitou decided on discipline. He stuck with his formal obligation and continued with his paper work. If nothing else, Sano’s note gave Saitou the excuse he needed to pay Sano a visit, but it would have to wait until his work was done.

Sano decided to run down to the *nomiya to occupy himself instead of having to stare at the walls of his apartment. The place was just around the corner on the main roadway, not too far from Sano’s apartment. He slipped a hakama on, tied it and quickly stepped outside.
The air was cool with a slight breeze indicating that the weather was changing. “Rain would be nice for a change,” Sano mumbled as he walked along and checked out the remaining street vendor’s goods as they were packing up their street stands for the day.
Sano arrived at the nomiya in no time at all and as soon as he entered through the front door he heard a familiar voice.
“Sano! Over here!”
Sano looked past the tables in the nomiya and saw a familiar face flagging him down. “Katsu!” Sano pointed his index finger in the air to let Katsu know that he noticed him. On his way over to meet with Katsu Sano caught a waitress, filled her in on his order and pointed to Katsu's chabudai.
The establishment was dimly lit, as most nomiya were. And like most nomiya, sake was at the top of the list for all who favored the drink. Sano was a great fan of the drink and he took pride in being able to drink down a few large bottles at a time. He was glad he decided to take the night out. He would have definitely gone crazed having to sit in his little apartment the way he was missing Saitou.
“Hey my friend, how are you?” Sano greeted Katsu as he approached the chabudai, sat and crossed his legs in front of him.
Katsu grinned, slapped his hand down on Sano’s shoulder and gave his close friend a shaking. “Sano, I still don’t see enough of you, what have you been up to?”
The waitress set a couple of sake bottles down on the center of the table and Sano was quick to pick one up and fill Katsu’s sake cup, and then his own. He drank it down and filled his cup again.
“Haven’t been up to much, just drifting here and there, you could say.” Sano sipped his sake. “You know, Katsu, I’ve been thinking.”
“Uh oh, now that’s dangerous!” Katsu laughed.
“Shit, this is serious… so shut up and listen for once!” Sano poured from the second sake bottle and flagged the waitress to let her know that he’s ready to order more.
“Okay Sano,” Katsu said trying to look serious. “I’m listening. Tell me what’s been on your mind lately.”
Sano continued with all seriousness, “Well, the city seems so wild and crazy most of the time. I was thinking that maybe I’ll start looking for a place in the country where I can get some peace and quiet.”
Katsu looked at Sano with surprise. “You? Out in the country?" Katsu asked in amazement. “But you thrive on excitement! The nomiya, the gambling halls, and what about the women? What the hell will you do with yourself out in the country?”
Katsu noticed something different in his long time friend’s eyes. He couldn't actually read what it was, but he could see that something was very different about Sano.
“Hey wait a minute!” Katsu blurted out. “I know what it is, you sly dog!” Katsu slapped Sano’s shoulder and gave him the old side eye; sly smile, moving his eyebrows up and down bit.
“Huh? NO! You’re getting the wrong idea, Katsu!” Sano tried to ward off Katsu’s accusing gestures.
“Yeah, right,” Katsu said. “Why don't you just spill-the-rice and tell me who she is already.”
“There is no she! I just think it’s time to step away from the fast-pace and get a new perspective on life. That’s all there is to it!” Sano tried his best to sound convincing.
The waitress brought the new bottles of sake to the table and swapped them with the empties. It gave Sano a chance to change the subject.
“Uh... so how’s the sketching coming along, Katsu?” Sano asks and downed another cup of the warm liquid.

“I think I got everything down on paper and that means my report is caught up,” Saitou happily mumbled to himself while he lit another cigarette and exhaled. Saitou got up from his chair and walked to the door to call on Cho.
“Fugita-sir?” Cho looked up from his desk in answer to Saitou’s call.
“Please summon my carriage, I am leaving for the evening.”
Cho nodded, “Right away!” Cho hopped up and ran to the front of the building to let the driver know Saitou was on his way.
Moments later, Saitou stepped outside in the cool air and took a deep breath. “Looks like a storm Cho, best make sure the windows are secured before leaving tonight.”
“Will do, Fujita-sir,” Cho acknowledged and opened the carriage door for Saitou.
Once seated Saitou looked over at Cho and nodded, “I am still working on the assignment and may not be here in the morning. It would be best if I were not seen at the station for a while. If I need to speak with you, either I, or someone in my stead will contact you.”
Saitou signaled the driver and the carriage was on its way to Saitou’s residence. “It’s been too long,” Saitou shook his head and tried to remember when he felt as alive as he was feeling at that moment. He still didn't know what it all meant, but he finally was accepting its source.
Saitou had seen too many things during the war and he did even more things that always seemed to drive elation away in the present. Now, life for Saitou was changing and hoped that life will offer him some peace.
The carriage rounded the bend and stopped at Saitou’s gate. The driver opened the carriage door for Saitou and in no time managed the bags off the carriage as well.
Saitou walked through the garden and up to his house to undo the latch on his door. The driver set the bags down next to him.
“Fujita-sir, will you be needing the carriage in the morning?” The driver asked.
“Probably not,” Saitou answered and added, “Miss Akatsuki will probably spend most of the morning getting situated and I will join her later in the afternoon. It is good if you would make the carriage available at noon.”
“Yes sir,” the driver bowed and left through the garden gate.
Saitou watched him walk to the gate and remembered the night he sent Sano away through the garden. The image of Sano’s face urged Saitou to pay young man a visit and find out the reason behind Sano’s message.
Saitou let himself into his house, set his bags down and fetched water to wash the day’s grime away. It felt good to slow his pace a little and being back in Tokyo felt even better. He started the fire in his cook-pit and hooked the tea boiler on its line above the kindling wood. He decided that a few pieces of dried fish and some soba will do just fine for the evening meal.

Sano and Katsu left the nomiya and with them they took a few extra bottles of sake. By then, all the street vendors were gone and no one was on the roadway, except for the two young men.
“We can sit and gamble a few rounds when we get to my place,” Sano said with a challenging tone in his voice.
Katsu laughed, “Do you want to get yourself in more debt? It happens all the time when we play one on one. You don’t have a chance playing against just me, Sano.”
“That’s what you think,” Sano spat out. “I’m feeling lucky tonight and don’t want to waste the feeling.”
“Maybe you’ll get laid tonight,” Katsu, teased, “that’ll really confirm your lucky feelings.”
Sano lit one of the lamps when the men entered his apartment. The two set their sake bottles on the chabudai and sat themselves across from one another.
Katsu picked up one of the sake bottles, filled both their cups and asked, “So, tell me, who is this mystery lady that wormed her way into my good friend’s life?”
“There you go again with your stupid assumptions. Just because I’ve been busy lately doesn’t mean I'm getting any.”
“Hmn,” Katsu nodded. “I know when you have it all settled and figured out for yourself, you’ll tell me about it—you always do. You’ve always been like that."
“Yeah? So, why change a good thing? I think I’ll keep me this way,” Sano laughed.
The two men drank and laughed through their rounds of sake. Reminiscing about their adventures. Katsu enjoyed seeing Sano laugh again. For a while, Katsu worried about Sano's melancholy state, but now, everything seemed to be back the way it had been before the Sano’s trip to Kyoto.
A fair amount of time and the two hadn't noticed that the rain was on the increase outside until a crack of lightening and sound of thunder pulled their attention away from their current discussion.
“I better get my ass out of here before it really starts coming down,” Katsu said.
“You could always stay the night,” Sano suggested.
“Not this time, good friend. I have an earlier class tomorrow. I recently started a second class since the original class was filled with students. I’m forced to teach two classes instead of just the one I started last spring."
“Hey, that’s a good thing, isn't it?! It’s too bad I can’t do art worth shit, I’d give you a hand.” Sano chuckled.
“See you soon,” Katsu said, stood up and made the short distance to the door to let himself out.
“You better hurry, it’s starting to cut loose out there,” Sano warned Katsu.
The door slid shut leaving Sano to fill his own sake cup with cooled sake. He sipped and leaned his head back on the wall behind him. Sano wondered how much sake Katsu and he put away. By the way the room seemed to sway, it must have been a substantial amount.
“Good, at least I’ll get to sleep without laying here thinking all night long,” Sano said to himself as he lifted his head away from the wall to go and latch the door for the night.
A couple of raps at the door startled Sano.
“What? You want your bottle of sake for the road?” Sano shouted loud enough for the person on the other side of the door to hear him. Thinking that Katsu wanted back in. Sano slid the door open and immediately felt the spray from the rain coming down off the roof.
“Saitou!” Sano was shocked stiff as if a lightning bolt struck.
“Sanosuke,” Saitou said in a hushed voice. “Are you going to stand there with your mouth hanging open and keep me standing out here in the rain? If so, I just assume on leaving.”
“NO! Uhhh… please, come in!” Sano backed away from the door to let Saitou pass.
Saitou sat in the corner of Sano’s apartment and removed his shoes and coat.
"Here's a towel, you probably could use this," Sano handed him a towel as he stared at the wolf in disbelief.
Saitou shook the water off his head, smoothed his hair into place and looked at Sano standing there staring at him. Sano looked splendid in the red yukata that draped over his solid shoulders. Seldom did anyone see Sano dressed in anything other than his white gi, and seeing Sano the way he was dressed sure was a big treat for Saitou. Saitou felt the very center of himself stir with excitement and he was definitely amazed at the way he felt toward the young man.
Saitou reached into his pocket and pulled out the note that Sano left with Cho. He moved closer Sano, sat next to him and leaned his back against the wall. “Is there something you wanted to speak to me about Sanosuke?” Saitou asked as he handed Sano the folded note.
“Uh… well…" Sano paused and then asked with a perplexed expression, "What the hell are you doing back so soon anyway?”
“Are you disappointed?” Saitou questioned. He narrowed his eyes as if to examine the inquiring young man.
“No! Of course not!” Sano quickly replied. “It has been like hell without you here, and I was going out of my mind. I couldn’t think, couldn’t sleep and I almost couldn’t eat! And that is pretty bad shape for me!”
“Hmn,” Saitou nodded, “pretty bad indeed.”
Sano turned to face Saitou. “Did something happen to you? Are you hurt? Why are you back so soon? You told me you’d be away for a few days, but you’re back already! What gives?”
Saitou listened and realized that the young man was sincerely concern for him, for Sano's countenance was so genuine, and so innocent. Saitou felt himself being pulled into Sano, and everything else around him was fading in the background.
Saitou put his hand on Sano’s shoulder to calm him. “Sanosuke, slow down. Take a deep breath and take it easy. Everything is all right. Nothing happened. Nothing except…” Saitou cut himself off from saying more.
Sano spoke up. “Are you trying to fuck with my mind again? If you are, I can’t take being treated like this. Not by you.”
“Sanosuke,” I am not trying to play games with you. I told you that we needed to separate in order to think things through. What happened in my garden was a surprise to the both of us. It was something that we both needed to get a handle on before we did, or said anything we would regret later.”
Sano sat there listening to the man he had both hated and admired at the same time. He was amazed that such a man as Saitou Hajime, who had been a part a part of the Shinsengumi was actually taking the time to even speak with Sano. And the topic of their conversation was even more unbelievable.
“I worked it out, so that I could return to Tokyo earlier than I originally planned because I wanted to see you again, Sanosuke. I am still having to work undercover, but I will be doing so here in Tokyo instead.”
“Wait a minute,” Sano interrupted, “you wanted to see me again?”
“Hmn,” Saitou nodded.
Sano pinched himself to see if he was in a dream. He was afraid that all of what was taking place at the moment would be gone when he woke. His heart was beating so hard beneath his ribs that he wondered if the wolf was able to hear it.
The rain was really coming down against the small structure, and the claps of lightening proved that the storm that threatened to open up over the city earlier that evening, did so at the most perfect time.
“I have about a bottle of sake left, would you like to have some?” Sano asked Saitou, not knowing what else to say.
“Here, leave it to me, I’m closer to the chabudai.” Saitou stretched a bit and grabbed the bottle that was still full. He moved closer to Sano and held up the bottle. “The sake is cool unfortunately,” Saitou said.
Saitou leaned closer to Sano and looked into the young man's deep, brown, almond-shaped eyes and spoke in a low, tantalizing tone, “Allow me to warm the sake up for you.”
Saitou brought the sake bottle to his lips and slowly poured some of the opaque liquid into his mouth. He pressed his body against Sano’s and took the young man by the back of the neck and pulled him close—closer. Saitou placed his lips on Sano’s mouth and then slid his tongue between Sano’s lips and teeth, then slowly allowed the sake to dribble from his mouth and Sano drank.
“Warm enough for your taste, Sanosuke?” Saitou grinned and released Sanoto lean against the wall once again.
“Best damn sake I ever had,” Sano said as he licked the corners of his mouth.
Sano was still at loss for words. There were too many feelings, and an abundant array of sensations flowing through him to even think straight. Nothing seemed to be real, yet it felt so genuine to him. Sano couldn’t think of a better place to be than right where he was at that moment.
“Sanosuke, I detect a hint of mint on you, perhaps you visited the furoya earlier?” Saitou guessed.
“Hmn,” Sano nodded. "I didn’t stay long; just got a soak and a back rub.”
Saitou glanced down at Sano’s chest, and then even further down and rested his eyes at the growing strain between the young man's legs. The wolf chuckled and said teasingly, “Pity, by the looks of your reaction to our kiss just now, I think you had the wrong side of you catered to.”
Saitou sat up closer to the wall and gestured at Sano to sit in front of him. “Come Sanosuke, sit here,” Saitou patted the floor before him.
Sano wasted no time and pelted along the floor toward the seducing wolf.
“Turn your back toward me and I will examine how thorough the massage you had earlier was.” Saitou positioned Sano between his knees and put his hands on the young man's broad shoulders and gave it a few squeezes with his thumbs and fingers.
Sano felt fire under Saitou’s touch and he let out a sigh. It was as though all his muscles wanted to respond and surrender to whatever it was that the wolf wanted to do to him. Sano noticed Saitou’s firm hold on his shoulders and then, his arms. He didn’t want it to stop. No it couldn't stop, not this time!
“Saitou, please take me now,” Sano’s voice trembled and pleaded. “Don’t let me go like the last two times. I really need you to have me, Saitou.”
Saitou was quick to respond. He slid his hands up under Sano’s yukata then across Sano’s rib cage and pulled the young man back into him as he rubbed the firm chest under his hands. Saitou dropped his head and his mouth found the curve of Sano’s neck.
“Haaah,” Saitou breathed out against Sano's throat in an expression of his hunger, and then the wolf bit down.
Sano threw his head back against Saitou’s shoulder and moaned out loud. His breathing was deeply intense.
Saitou felt the young man surrender. He slid his hands down to release the tie on Sano’s hakama. Once loosened, he slipped his right hand under the tie. Desiring to unleash his wolf-like passion and tear into Sano, but he resisted. No, Saitou didn't allow himself to ravage such an exceptional offering—Not just yet.
“Sanosuke, I will not take you now–not here, not this way.” Saitou whispered.
“Please Saitou,” Sano begged, desperately wanting to take the relationship to the next level. “Don’t do this, you can’t stop now.”
Saitou fixed his fingers around Sano’s rigid offshoot and caressed him while he feds on Sano’s neck. Sano gasped, “Please Saitou,” Sano sucked a lungful of wind between his teeth and pleaded again.
Saitou took a firmer hold on Sano and leaned against him from behind. He pushed his aching member against Sano causing the young man to feel his hot desire against Sano’s lower back and upper buttocks, and then began to stroke the young man's shaft as if he was doing it to himself.
Sano was close and Saitou sensed that it wouldn’t take the young man long to step over to sexual completion. Saitou slid his other hand between Sano’s legs and located his most delicate part and gently squeezed while working the ex-fighter's root at the same time. Sano heaved and reached behind and grasps Saitou’s shoulders and arms. Saitou bit down hard on the area between Sano’s neck and shoulder.
“Aaaahgh,” Sano hollered, tightening his muscles and poured his essence into Saitou’s hand in spasmodically.
Out of breath, Sano reached for the towel Saitou used to dry the rain off earlier and hands it to Saitou.
“Saitou, what about yourself?” Sano asked with concern.
“That will be for another time, Sanosuke, but this time was for you.”
Sano turned and faced Saitou. “Does this mean that you are okay with me in your life?” Sano asked hoping for the answer he wanted to hear.
Saitou smiled, “I don’t know what this means, but I do know we will find out its meaning together.” Saitou put his hand on the young man's shoulder and said, “I must go now.”
“It’s raining out there Saitou, maybe you should wait.” Sano said hoping that Saitou would stay the night.
“My assignment is still active and I must attend to it tomorrow and because of the circumstance I am presently in…” Saitou smirked, “…the rain will do me some good.”
Saitou got up, walked over to his coat that hung in the corner of the apartment and picked it up and turned toward Sano.
“Uh, I almost forgot to tell you, ‘welcome back,’ Saitou!” Sano stepped forward and gave Saitou a hug around his neck.
“Moron,” Saitou replied and kissed Sano gently on the neck reluctant to let go. With his coat buttoned, he slid the door open and stepped out into the rain.
“Narrow-eyed-Wolf!” Sano called out after him and watched the handsome wolf's figure blend in with the dark background of the night.
Sano chuckled and said to himself, “Hmmm, I guess I was damn lucky tonight! Katsu was right! I may not have gotten laid, but I did have a lucky stroke.”
