Author's Note: Hello again folks, thought I'd never be back. :(
SO, a lot of time has passed since I re-uploaded, but I'm back, and hopefully for a long time. Lots of personal stuff came up in my life, including the death of an immediate family member. Suffice it to say, I've not wanted to write, but now I do again. Hopefully the people who read before stuck around, so thanks if you did.
As for this chapter, it's the first of a series that will introduce the major plot of HT. Since they're a series, they're noticeably shorter than my previous ones, but I intend to keep them full of content and important details. The title of this one is a reference to Rocky, since really, that's what happened in this story. Besides, that's just a badass theme to make a comeback with. Oh, and I left out a majority of details on Ken's training and his trainer on purpose. They'll be coming out over time as conversation and such, so sorry if the character doesn't feel really fleshed out at first.
Hopefully you'll enjoy the new chapter, and as always, criticism and comments are greatly appreciated and help me feel inclined to keep writing when I get busy.
(Two side notes: 1) Why can't I use any normal type of file when uploading to AFF? It makes the pages look ugly in my opinion. And 2) Every part of the training that I'll mention is based on real life sans the mountain. I've recently started the process of joining the USMC, and I had to get back into shape. I hope you enjoy the touches of realism I go for.)
Thanks for reading.
Human Type Chap. 8 – Getting Stronger
“Absence is to love what wind is to fire; it extinguishes the small, it enkindles the great.”
Kendrick finished rolling up his sleeping bag and put it in his pack. A strong breeze rolled in, waving his longer hair in front of his eyes. It had grown during his training, and his normally short and soft spikes were as long as five inches on top. The wind even felt good against his new beard. Man, it feels great out this morning. It’s gotta’ be a cool 40 degrees.
He pulled on his last non-tattered shirt and stretched out in his makeshift camp. Today was the day he returned from his training, and he had elected to wait for morning before entering town.
It’s been too long. What is it, six months? I missed my birthday and everything… damn.
After throwing his backpack over his shoulder, he started for town and let his mind wander to the past half year.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Throwing his pack over the last ledge, Kendrick gave one final heave as he reached the top of his destination. Mother… fucker… this is the biggest mountain in the world. I shouldn’t have done this. He flipped onto his back and stared at the blinding orb in the sky now mocking him. Fuck you sun.
Soon after his break began, he heard a commotion nearby. After following the sound to a small cave set in the face of the peak, Ken had found his trainer.
Several Pokemon were surrounding a stone table where a man was locked in an arm wrestle with a Machoke. Three loud grunts later the man stood up, fists in the air, proclaiming victory to the delight of the audience. Is this guy for real?!
Seeing Kendrick watching on, the man spoke up. “Hey there kid. You must be the nephew. Alright friends, time to go home, I’ve got work to do!”
As the crowd of Pokemon dispersed, the man patted the Machoke he had beaten on his back. “Don’t stop working at it, you’re getting tougher.”
Once they were alone, Ken finally spoke. “Hey, don’t take this the wrong way, but is this all you do up here?”
“Hell yes it is. I’m retired, and I can do whatever the hell I want. Now kid, what am I supposed to do with you?”
Ken noticed he felt like a child before the man in front of him. “I’ve come up here to train with you… I think.”
“I know that. I meant, what am I supposed to do with a kid? You’re not tough enough to be up here with me.”
“Fuck that, I’m tough enough to do anything.”
“Oh yeah? Punch that big rock right there.”
“What? Why?”
“Because I said so. If you can punch it 3 times without making a sound, we’ll get started.”
“Of course I’ll make a sound, it’s a fucking rock.”
The thick-skinned man walked to where Ken was standing and slammed his fist into the rock. Did he just punch a rock? Without a word, the man resumed his place from before.
“Alright fine, I’ll do your stupid test.”
Balling up his fist, Ken bit his lip and struck the rock full-force, nearly jamming his finger. Holy FUCK that hurt. Wanting no time to regret it, he banged his fist against it twice more, breaking the skin on his middle knuckle. Shitting fuckshit, what’s wrong with him?
“Hahaha, oh man, I like you kid. It always hurts at first. Don’t worry, you’ll get used to it before we get started.”
“Huh? What do you mean before?”
“I mean, I just wanted to see if you’d do it. We’re not training until you look tougher than you do right now. You want my help, you better grow a beard first.”
“A beard? Are you fucking kidding me?”
“A beard. If you want my help, you must have a beard. Man rule.”
“You’re crazy. I shaved before I left.”
“Well, then you better get started on the new one! Two weeks from now, you’ll be ready. Live off the land until then or something.”
“This is bullshit!”
“Later kid.” He retreated into his cave, and Ken was left alone to fume in silence.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kendrick was now halfway to his uncle’s house, and the sun was just starting to crack the skyline over Jubilife. He smiled to himself as he remembered the rough start. Those first weeks sucked ass. I sure don’t miss them.
After leaving the peak to find somewhere to stay, Kendrick ran into problems with painful regularity. He tripped hundreds of times over stray Geodude on the ground, and every time he turned around there was another Zubat shrieking by his head. He hadn’t even found shelter when the rain started, and he spent his first night cold, wet, and starved.
Late on the second day he found several berry trees tucked away in the mountainside, and finally got some food in him. Still hungry and shelter-less, he spent the next two cold nights under the trees he’d discovered.
By the fourth day, he’d finally located a sizable cavern to sleep in, and with a little luck had stumbled onto an entrance into the main caverns of Mt. Coronet. Over the rest of his first week in the range, he attempted to find fresh drinking water, and established a system of getting berries and water each morning before the sunlight was strong.
Satisfied with his accomplishments and the stubble now formed on his chin, Ken spent the next week gathering food and working out in his cave. When his two weeks had come and gone, Kendrick’s body had adapted to the limited food and water and felt as strong as it had before leaving Jubilife.
When he reached the man’s cave at the peak he was already waiting, and Ken’s real work began. These past 6 months… I’ll never be that tired again. Every day was the same: Fish, cook, train, run, fetch berries and water, sleep. The only thing that changed was how much training I did…
His mind stopped wandering as his feet did. I’m finally back.
Briefly debating whether he should knock or just walk in, Ken decided on the former as the door busted open. Kendrick’s uncle stood in the doorway, cigarette in one hand with a skillet in the other. “Welcome back. You’re just in time for my ‘Wakey Wakey, Eggs and Bakey Deluxe Breakfast’!”
Ken grinned. “Good. I was starting to miss real food.”
After a brief hug, his uncle went back to the kitchen. “I’ll want to hear all about it! Now go unpack, I’ll send for the girls. I must’ve forgotten to mention you were getting back today…”
As he walked to his room and out of earshot, Kendrick noticed the couch Vesta made him sleep on before was left untouched in a room full of her clothes strewn about. Sitting neatly on top were new clothes for him and the empty Pokeballs of his Pokemon. Kicking aside a pile of Vesta’s bras, he smiled to himself as he changed into his present. Man, she’s a real pig…
Pulling his shirt over his head, a familiar voice squeaked and tackled him to the floor. “You’re back!”
“Ouch… it’s nice to see you too.” Ken moved the shirt below his eyes and locked them with Vesta’s. To no avail, he tried to hide his red cheeks. Shit… she’s beautiful.
Vesta pinched the exposed part of his stomach and grinned. “Why didn’t you tell me you were getting home today jerk?!”
“Sorry, mail doesn’t deliver on weekends.”
“It’s Wednesday.”
“Meh, details.” He smirked at her, and she eased off his body. The two sat up with their legs to the side and continued to stare at each other.
“I missed you.”
“Bah, you make it sound like I was gon-“
Vesta wrapped her arms around his back and took his lips with hers. Stunned, Kendrick didn’t even consider pulling away. He could only think about how soft her kiss was.
A half-minute later and not nearly long enough, another familiar voice whispered in his ear. “I’m not interrupting anything, am I?”
Shrieking, Vesta pulled away and hid her face in her hands. Ken looked up to see Sera’s face looking down with a smile. “Yeah, you kinda’ are.”
“Damn, I have the worst timing.” She chuckled as Vesta glared at her. “Well Ken, you sure look good. How are you?”
Too embarrassed to look back at Vesta, he stood and gave Sera a hug. “I’m doing fine now that I’m back. Tougher to boot. But before I tell you all the juicy details, I’d like to catch up with Vesta for a minute, okay?”
Sera smiled again as she saw Vesta look up at Ken surprised. “Of course! Sorry again to have interrupted before.”
As she walked away, Vesta let out a low growl at her sarcastic tone. Once they were alone and Ken had shut the door, she crawled onto her bed. “I really don’t like that woman.”
“Haha, you two still fight? What’s the matter?”
“None of your business.”
“Alright, I get it.” He smirked at her as he laid down next to her. “I missed you too, you know?”
“Oh yeah?”
“Yeah. Like a bunch.”
Smiling, she curled up into his chest and closed her eyes. “Heh, you sound desperate or something.”
“Actually, that little kissing thing says you were the desperate one.”
“I have no clue what you’re talking about.”
“Really? That’s funny…”
“Nope. Now shut up for a bit, would you? It’s been a while since I’ve gotten to oversleep.”
“Please, you’ve had it easy. I haven-“
“Shut it.”
Ken grinned as he turned his eyes to the ceiling. Damn it’s good to be home again.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A little over an hour later, Kendrick left Vesta asleep and went out to the living room. Sera was sitting on the couch watching TV with Eevee sleeping on her lap. Sera put her sly smile back on when she saw Ken. “You two look so cute together!”
“Shut up.” Eevee immediately perked up her ears at the new voice and turned to look at Ken. With an excited yelp she flew off Sera and rubbed against his legs. “Hey girl! Oh man, did I miss you!”
As Ken picked up his Pokemon and rubbed his head against hers, Sera walked over to him and pet Eevee as well. “This girl here has gotten pretty scrappy over these past months. I hope you were training hard too because she’s worked her ass off.”
He laughed as he looked at her. “Oh man, you have no idea. We spent an hour every day wringing out these old rags he had in a bucket of water. Just an hour of us sitting over a bucket, squeezing as hard as we could and talking about all of the different ways a human can fight with a Pokemon. My forearms were never not hurting.”
“Oooh, exciting.”
“Yeah, it was fun. But hey, as happy as I am to have seen you all again, I’m still missing someone, no? C’mon, where’s Luxio?”
She took Eevee from his hands and pointed to the door. “Your little lion is sleeping where he always does on his day off from training; under the tree you guys trained by before.”
After promising Eevee he’d be right back, Ken left the house with his uncle and told him all about what his training was like.
“So lemme’ get this straight, you still don’t know his name?”
“Nope. Not his real one at least. I asked him about it and he said I could call him Cosgrove.”
“Cosgrove? That’s a stupid name.”
“That’s what I said. He said I was a stupid name and that’s the last time I asked.”
“Haha, well, you are a stupid name.”
“Whatever. Oh, and we started every sparring session with 200 sit-ups and push-ups. The whole first month was him punching my face until it bled and laughing at me complaining about how tired my arms were.”
“Maybe if you spent less time complaining and more time blocking that wouldn’t have happened.”
“Oh yeah? Let’s see you give it a go with that guy, old man.”
“Nah, I’m a lover, not a fighter. You know that.”
They reached the perfect and secluded tree Ken loved to lay under what seemed like a year ago. He noticed his best friend curled on the shady side of his shelter, and stopped in place. “Hey, is Lux… bigger?”
The lion stirred from his sleep at the familiar voice, jumping to his feet when he saw who it was. Stretching his legs out, he ran over to Ken and set his massive paws on his shoulders. Ken’s uncle burst out laughing at the shock on Ken’s face. “Yeah, he’s a little bigger. Turns out Ace put him and Eevee through their paces, and this little guy evolved just a couple weeks ago now.”
“Luxray?! I just got used to calling you Luxio, asshole!” Kendrick grinned as his Pokemon stood up tall and let his trainer look him over. Luxray’s mostly blue fur had turned black over most of his body and down the bridge of his nose, with the only blue left on his underbelly and back legs. His tail now extended much farther from his body, and the starburst tip of it looked much fuller in size. Outside of his larger coat and massive mane, the biggest change Ken noticed was Luxray’s eyes; now fully red with gold in the middle and strikingly aggressive compared to the childish look he once had.
Ken’s uncle pulled a stack of small cups and a treat for Luxray from his pocket. After putting the treat underneath one, he placed another 6 around it on the ground. “Hey Kendrick, keep him from looking for a minute, it’s hard to keep him from cheating.”
“You’re testing his eyes?”
“Not really testing, more like training. He’s strong now. Really strong. But he evolved too quickly and is very awkward with some of his talents. I know enough about the Pokemon to know he can see through things, but I didn’t know how to make him do it. So we started playing this game to work out the kinks.”
“You hear that buddy? He says you’re not a natural. You gonna’ take that?” The lion growled out his answer. “Didn’t think so.”
“Alright Luxray, go ahead and find it.”
Ken stepped back and watched as Luxray focused his eyes. A light glow began to emit from them in the strong daylight, and Ken could see the entirety of his eyes turn golden as his gaze turned distant. Walking up to the cups, Luxray flipped over the correct one and ate his treat happily. “Good job Lux!”
Ken’s uncle smiled. “Yeah, it was alright. But I’ve gotta’ check just one more thing. Have him turn away again.”
Luxray walked to Ken who held Luxray’s face against his body, petting the lion on the underside of his mane. His uncle set the cups up almost the exact same way, with a different location for the treat. Once he had finished, Kendrick let go of Luxray and he tried again.
Once his eyes had gleamed over, Kendrick’s uncle placed a log from the ground in Luxray’s path. Walking towards his treat after locating it, he tripped on the obstacle and went face-first into the dirt. His uncle frowned. “That’s what I was afraid of. He’s still not adjusted to it completely, and it’s giving him some rather nasty tunnel vision when he tries.”
Upset, the lion shook out his fur and snapped the log in half with his teeth. After grabbing his treat he walked by Ken and headed home. Ken chuckled and shook his head. “Well man, looks like we’ve got a lot more work to do still.”
As he picked up the cups, his uncle called up from the ground. “Hey, before our big dinner tonight, you should go to the UGL's administrative offices. Ace asked if you'll help him with a problem. I said you would.”
“What could he possibly need from me?”
“I wasn't listening. Something like 'Blah blah, secret base, blah blah blah EVO blah.' Just get over there.”
“Fine, but you really need to stop volunteering me for things. Wait up Lux!”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As he entered the waiting room to find Ace, Ken first noticed how unusually sterile and white the building was. After adjusting to the borderline hospital smell, he noticed an old friend at the front desk. “Tai? How the hell did you end up working here?”
The kid had grown a bit from their last meeting, but the biggest difference was the happiness in his eyes. “Ken! I heard you'd be stopping by, but I can't believe you're back!”
He jumped from around the desk and Ken gave him a hug. “Yeah, I'm back, but not for long if my uncle has his way. So what are you doing here?”
“Well, Ms. Sera told Mr. Locke about why I was in the tourney and asked him to help me out. He offered me a job as an intern here. I make great money, and he even paid everything for my mom's operation! She's still a little weak, but she's fine now.”
“Really?” His mind drifted to Sera for a moment. “That's great man! Glad to hear she's okay. So what kind of crap do they have you doing here?”
Ace's strong voice called out from behind him. “Nothing that he can't handle. And when he's not running errands for Locke, he's training with me.”
“You should meet Mr. Jet too, he's really nice.” Tai quickly returned to his work behind the desk.
Kendrick sized up Ace again and couldn't help but respect the guy he hated before. “I should thank you. You did a great job with my friends while I was gone.”
“It wasn't a problem. The Eevee was quite enjoyable, and while he may be temperamental Luxray was definitely a hard worker. But I've got a bigger issue I'm dealing with and I want you to be the one who handles it. Let's talk in my office.”
As Ken sat down, Ace shut the door and walked to a map of Sinnoh. “For the past year, Jet's been out and about getting information on our friends, the EVO's.”
“Jet... your shelled friend, right?”
“Yes. He came back a month ago with some rumors of another laboratory connected to the EVO project. One that has fallen under control of the renegades.”
“So? What are they doing? And what do you need me for?”
“Jet thinks they're working on a new generation serum. I don't know what their goal is, or if they're near completing it, but letting them grow in numbers is a pretty bad idea.”
“So...?”
“So I need you to go with Sera and find out what they're doing. I need you to find all research on this next-gen serum, and if they've finished it, destroy it.”
“Uh, I'm a normal trainer. I've got two Pokemon. I'm hardly a threat to most security guards, why do you want me to go play secret agent?”
“You're not the one I need to go, I need Sera there. She's the only asset I've got that can be useful. I want you to go because you've worked with her before and I trust yours and Luxray's strength. I figured you'd jump at a chance to learn more about these people.”
“Well, yeah. I was just wondering if this is dangerous or something.”
“It shouldn't be at all. Calling it a base is a slight exaggeration, it's more of a research outpost. Sera should be easily capable of this job alone.”
“Then why am I going? There's something you're not telling me.”
Ace let out a deep sigh before taking a seat. “Honestly, I'm worried about Sera. She's a lot more immature then she acts, in body and mind.”
“What do you mean? She's pretty normal all things considered.”
“I'm talking as an EVO. She's been alone to learn about herself except for Jet and I, and he's never here. I'm not exactly a good father figure either. My fear is that she's not going to handle whatever she may find. If she gets promised a chance to learn all she's ever wondered, she might take it.”
“Wait, how did Sera end up working for you?”
“She was one of the Generation 3 prototypes, and a failure in their eyes. She wasn't the genetic key they wanted, and her fellow prototype died from the bonding. They didn't even care that I took her.”
“Why did you take her?”
“I don't know. Probably because I sympathized with her. I didn't want her to be a failure her whole life.”
“So, you want me to make sure she's okay? Of course I'll help her out.”
“Thank you. You guys should head out tomorrow if you can. Sera already knows where you're going.”
Ken got up to leave, only to stop at the door. “You know, you're not the asshole I thought you were. I'm kinda' glad you're keeping an eye on Vesta for me.”
As he walked away, Ace shouted out after him. “What? When did I act like an asshole?!” Ken just smiled and waved goodbye to Tai.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dawn was just breaking over the trees as Kendrick and Sera made their way north towards Floaroma Town. As they shared a friendly chat to catch up on lost time, neither one had a care in the world.
Vesta was returning from a trip to buy groceries for the week, and bent over to fix her shoe in front of the house. Her head suddenly filled with a sharp pain before losing consciousness. Startled by the sound, Kendrick's uncle ran outside to check and saw her collapsed on the ground. Taking her inside and laying her on her bed, he rushed to his phone and dialed Ace.
“Pick up damn you.”
“Hello?”
“Fly-boy, we've got a problem. Vesta's unconscious. Don't know what happened. It could be Sera.”
“No... I didn't think it was true.”
“Well, she's safe, but what should we do?”
Ace was silent for a moment. “We've got to hope that Kendrick and Sera can finish this quickly. The longer she's gone, the more dangerous this is.”
“Okay then, I'll keep her safe. Bring me an IV or something later.”
“I'm on my way now. Tyr, watch her closely.”
“Will do.” He lit a cigarette and looked out his window. Tyr... Nobody's called me by that name in a long time.
