Koushiro looked at the elderly man who sat across the small table from him. The old man’s hair had mostly fallen out, only a few grey hairs still clung desperately to the sides of his head. The old man’s black glasses held thick scratched lenses. The wrinkles in his face were deep and dark, each one hiding the memory of its creation. The man’s suit was pressed and clean yet it still showed of its hard years of service. The man’s cane however appeared new as scratches were rare to tarnish the beauty of the polished wood.
They had been sitting in an awkward silence for a couple minutes, listening only to the sounds of other people’s talking and the sounds of cups clanging against saucers. To say the least it was unnerving the young college student. “I apologize for possibly sounding rude, but you said that I was friends with your grandson. But without a proper introduction, I don’t know who your grandson even is.”
The old man wheezed out a chuckle. “How silly of me. I am Tanaka Yasuteru. I’m Yutaka’s grandfather.”
“I am really pleased to meet you sir.” Koushiro said with a bow, “I haven’t gotten a chance to meet any of Yutaka’s family yet.” Koushiro said.
The old man’s dark grey eyes looked over Koushiro, “That doesn’t surprise me. You see, that’s what I wanted to talk to you about.”
“And what would that be?” Koushiro asked.
“Well you see, Yutaka and I were very close years ago. He was always at my house as a child. Sadly a few years ago we got into what I thought was a slight squabble over a simple misunderstanding. However, after years of seclusion from him I realized that it wasn’t such a simple squabble after all. Yutaka was living at my house at that time, he had left the house one day without saying anything to me and never returned. After a few sleepless weeks of worrying I found out that he was alive and doing well. I tried to contact him but he would never return any of my calls or letters. If by chance we miraculously made contact with one another it usually ended with him yelling at me before I could try and settle matters.” The old man stopped and took several deep breaths. “Eventually if by chance we met on the street or somewhere else he would ignore me, as if I was some stranger. The pain of being ignored these years by my only grandson has been a pain that is all too unbearable. That is why I have never stopped trying to contact him. Today I’m still trying to reopen the channels of communication. And as you can see I’m not in good health. My doctors have told me I don’t have many more months to live. So I’m desperately trying to contact Yutaka again, to try and settle whatever issue he has with me.”
“That is very touching sir, but what do you want me to do about it?” Koushiro asked.
The old man smiled, “Where he may have disowned me, I haven’t done the same with him. I have been able to keep tabs on him, as any concerned grandparent would. So I know that you and him are very close. I was hoping that you could try and talk to him. To convince him to talk to me.”
Koushiro shifted in his seat, “Yutaka and I are close, but wouldn’t other people have more sway? I mean wouldn’t the other members of your family be better to talk to him?”
The smile disappeared into the folds of the man’s face. “Oh dear. He hasn’t told you?”
Koushiro’s head tilted slightly, “Tell me what?”
“I know I shouldn’t tell you this because it’s not really my place. But since you asked, and you do deserve to be told.” The old man paused and stared at his drink a moment. When he looked up his eyes seemed cold and lifeless. “The truth is that my wife died three years ago. To make it worse she was proceeded in death by our only daughter, Yutaka’s mother, along with Yutaka’s father in a car accident a little more than seven years ago.”
Koushiro’s mouth hung open.
The old man reached out and touched Koushiro’s hand, “I’m sorry that you had to hear that from me. But this shows why I must talk with my grandson. We are the only family each other has.”
Koushiro gently nodded, already lost in thought. “I’ll try and talk with him.”
“Thank you, you’ve made an old man very happy today.” The old man’s chest started puff in and out, and soon several loud congested coughs came out. The old man wiped his mouth and then put a hand on his chest and took a deep ragged breath. The old man slowly stood up, “If you’ll excuse me. I have a doctor’s appointment, I must attend.” He then hobbled away from Koushiro and out of sight.
As Koushiro began his trip back to his dorm room he thought of what the old man had said. How horrible it was for Yutaka to deny his dying grandfather the chance to see and make peace. He also thought about how Yutaka had lied to him several times about his family. It was by the time Koushiro got back to his dorm that he wanted to scream. His boyfriend now seemed to be cruel and heartless to his own flesh and blood a revelation made worse by the fact that his dorm room, his place of peace and free thought, had been broken into and now left him with a strong unsettled feel. By that night, Koushiro temper hadn’t gotten better as he had spent that afternoon putting his room back in order. With each piece of computer equipment and school paper he put back in it’s rightful place, the tension in him grew. So it was understandable when his cellphone began to ring, Koushiro grumbled.
“Hello?” Koushiro said rather harshly.
The was a quick moment of silence, “Hello. Everything alright? You sound upset, need me to come over?” a concerned Yutaka asked.
Koushiro’s tone didn’t change. “I’m busy. Can we talk later?”
“Yeah, I guess. Are you sure everything is alright?” Yutaka responded.
“As I said I’m busy. I have to rearrange my dorm room because it was broken into. Then I need to help people with their projects because they’re too lazy or stupid to do it themselves. And I also have to call campus security again to have my lock changed.” Koushiro answered.
“Oh… I better let you to it then.” Yutaka said weakly. “Take care of yourself. I’m worried about you. And I mean it when I say, if you need anything call me.”
“Alright then. Talk to you later. Goodbye.” Koushiro then hung up. He hadn’t really meant to have been so angry but he couldn’t help it. This weekend had been just a big stress, with what he had previously thought had only one bright spot. But now even the night before with Yutaka had been tainted by seeing a dark side to the chipper drummer.
--------------------
It has been a long stressful week for Koushiro, as he never seemed time to himself as campus security, and his various dorm neighbors were always stopping by to check on him. He never had a chance to settle himself down and think as he never felt comfortable enough to do so when he was alone. Even his sleep had suffered as he could never become calm enough to drop into a deep restful sleep.
Yutaka also had a rough week as he didn’t have much contact with his boyfriend. The phone conversations were always short and whenever he stopped by to see Koushiro, he was never there. Knowing something was wrong Yutaka decided to make things better with a date to a nice restaurant.
Once they arrived Yutaka opened the front door and ushered in his boyfriend. Yutaka joined him inside and walked up to the hostess. The hostess was long since bored and had taken to doodling on her reservations book, while ignoring the people waiting to be seated in the packed restaurant. Yutaka cleared his throat, but the Hostess acted like she didn’t hear it. He cleared his throat again, the Hostess still continued her drawings. “Excuse me miss.” Yutaka said.
Suddenly the Hostess’s head popped up, a smile growing on her face. She then sprang around her host stand, her long blonde hair flowing wildly behind her. She threw her arms around Yutaka and put him in a tight embrace. “Yutaka, you made it!”
“That’s kind of what happens when you make reservations…” Yutaka gasped out.
The blonde bombshell continued to envelope Yutaka in her slender arms. Koushiro cleared his throat, and the Hostess turned her gaze to him. She then slowly let her arms go loose. She said quietly, with a hint of embarrassment, “Now if you and your date would just follow me, I’ll lead you to your table.”
Once the hostess had turned her back to them Koushiro looked at Yutaka. Yutaka knew he had to provide answers and fast so he raised his hand to his head and twirled a finger around the side, and mouthed the word, ‘crazy’. Koushiro just let out a quiet huff and followed behind.
The hostess stopped beside a booth and pointed to it. She turned and beamed at Yutaka, “Here you go Yutaka. Takumi will be by shortly to take your order. Make sure you stop by before you leave.”
As soon as the Hostess was out of hearing range Koushiro asked the question, “Care to explain who she is and why she felt the need to jump you when she saw you.”
“You don’t recognize her?” Yutaka asked.
Koushiro shook his head, “Should I have?”
“Her name is Ami, she only went to High School with us and was a on the Basketball team.”
“In case you’ve forgotten we had a large school, so it was hard enough to meet even a quarter of our class, let alone remember them. Especially when I was in the computer lab for most of my High School life. And going to school with someone doesn’t give them the right to jump you.” Koushiro said defensively. He then added to prove his point, “Otherwise she would have jumped me as well.”
Yutaka first instinct was to make a witty comment about his date wanting to be jumped by the hostess, but for once decided to keep his mouth closed. Instead he decided to explain further. “She’s been a big fan of the Teenage Wolves since we formed, in fact I think she’s been to all of our concerts. She’s just a little touchy feely is all, but at least whenever any of us need a table here, she always pulls some strings to get us in.” Yutaka explained. But he felt a tug of guilt pass through him as that was only a partial truth.
Just then a squeal of glee pierced their ears, they looked up and saw a man their age with short black hair brushed over one eye briskly walking towards them. “YUTAKA!” He squealed, pulling the drummer out of the booth and into a hug. While Yutaka was still stuck in the embrace he looked over to his boyfriend, and mouthed the words ‘I’m Sorry’. Takumi eventually let Yutaka go. “So what can I get you two?”
Yutaka sitting back down said, “Two of the usual and whatever he wants to drink.”
Takumi turned to Koushiro, “Water will be fine.” Once Takumi left, Koushiro asked another burning question, “Okay then Yutaka, who was that?”
“That in fact was my study buddy from school last year.” Yutaka said, once again a wave of guilt flowed over him. But it was easier to tell Koushiro partial truths, then the whole truth. Because after all the truth was that both Ami and Takumi were former lovers of his. Out of the Teenage Wolves, only Yamato hadn’t dated Ami at least once since their founding. And while it was true that Takumi and him were study buddies the previous year, they were more interested in studying anatomy than they were psychology.
The young couple sat in their booth silently. Hoping for some at least some nonverbal communication Yutaka spent the time trying to look into his boyfriend’s eyes. Even though not a word was spoken, plenty was communicated. It confirmed that Yutaka had done something wrong. After a week of short phone conversations and dates canceled for “sudden homework” the drummer had suspected something was up but had given into the possibility that his boyfriend truly was just a workaholic. But sadly that didn’t hold true now as they were removed from school work, and seated in a nice restaurant.
Yutaka had had enough of the deafening silence. “Is everything alright?”
“Everything’s fine.” Koushiro said softly.
“Right…” Yutaka left it that. For a few minutes that is.
“Well apparently everything is not alright, you barely said a word to me all night, let alone all week.” Yutaka pointed out. “So something must have happened over last weekend. Was it the break-in? Are you still unsettled from it?”
“No it’s not that.” Koushiro mumbled.
Yutaka sat there thinking for moment about the previous weekend’s major events. A thought then hit him like a ton of bricks. “Oh no…it was the blowjob, wasn’t it? We moved to quickly.” Yutaka whacked his forehead. “Stupid. Stupid. Stupid!”
“It wasn’t that.” Said Koushiro.
Yutaka cocked an eyebrow, “Too slow?”
Koushiro shook his head, “No it wasn’t…”
Yutaka’s head hit the table. When he lifted his head up a look of devastation was upon it, “Don’t tell me the it was bad!”
Koushiro slapped a hand over his boyfriends mouth, “will you keep it down? Besides it wasn’t the…blowjob.”
Yutaka removed his boyfriend’s hand from covering his mouth, “So the blowjob was…good?”
Koushiro clamped his hand once again over the loud mouth. “It was great. Can we drop it now?” Yutaka nodded and Koushiro slowly removed his hand from Yutaka’s mouth, to reveal Yutaka’s large grin. “Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll go wash my hands before dinner gets here.”
As Yutaka watched his boyfriend walk across the floor, his thoughts drifted once again to the previous weekend. Trying to find any clue as to why Koushiro seemed rather hostile towards him.
Koushiro had entered the bathroom and made it too the sink when the door opened behind him and in walked the waiter Takumi. “Sounds like you and Yutaka are having a little fight.”
Koushiro turned the water on and begun adjusting the temperature. “It wasn’t a fight.”
“Sounded like one to me. That is when you two even talked at all. Even from the other tables I can tell you’ve been giving him the cold shoulder.” Takumi said as he leaned against the neighboring sink.
“You’ve been eavesdropping on our conversation.” Koushiro stated.
The waiter smiled, “The people on the other side of the restaurant heard about you getting a blowjob.”
Koushiro blushed.
The waiter continued, “Listen, I didn’t come in here to tell you to quiet down or to tease you. It was just upon hearing some of your conversation; I knew I should tell you something about Yutaka for your own good.”
Koushiro stopped washing his hands, “What would be so important that you know about Yutaka, and I don’t?”
“I know this may be hard to hear but there’s really no easy way of saying this.” Takumi took a deep breath, “Yutaka is a whore.”
“What?” Koushiro exclaimed. Once the shock of the statement wore off, the savage heat of anger burned through the digidestined. His emotions had been on edge all week and he knew pummeling would be a great way to release it all.
“He’s just using you for the sex. That’s what he did with me.” Takumi said with a slight smile on his face as if he were remembering happier times.
“You mean you two…” the words stuck in Koushiro’s throat.
The smile vanished from the waiters face and was replaced with shock. “You mean he didn’t tell you about me? I’m a little hurt. Well then surely he told you about Ami.”
“The hostess?” Koushirp exclaimed.
Takumi winced, “I will take that as a no.” He then stood up and wiped his hands together, “I’ve said too much. I should get back to work. hungry people wanting their food and all.” The waiter then began to walk to the door, as he got there he paused a moment and turned back around. “Be careful around him, you look like a kind guy. Don’t let him ruin that. Because he’ll just use you for sex and toss you away, just like he’s done with everyone else.”
Koushiro turned his focus back to the sink. He wasn’t sure what to think. He didn’t know if the waiter was lying to him. He didn’t look like he was lying but there was no way to be sure. But it wouldn’t be surprising to find out that it was true. After all he had recently found out about a darker side to Yutaka.
Koushiro dried his hands and looked into the mirror. He wouldn’t be able to even put a fake smile on after that conversation he just had. He opened the door and walked back to the booth where he saw Yutaka sitting in front of two plates piled with food.
Yutaka noticed immediately that his boyfriend looked more upset than when he went to wash his hands. “Something happen in the bathroom?”
“I saw Takumi in the bathroom…” Koushiro paused.
Yutaka tried guessing where this conversation was going “…And he didn’t wash his hands?”
Koushiro didn’t even act like he had heard what the drummer said. “…and he…he said…never mind I don’t feel good. Like my head might explode. I think I’m just going to go home.”
“If you’ll wait, I’ll have this boxed up and then walk you home.” Yutaka said.
“No, you stay here and eat it while it’s still hot.” Koushiro said, “I’ll talk to you later.” He then began to walk towards the door.
Yutaka reached into his pocket and pulled out a handful of bills and slammed them on the table and took off after his boyfriend. Koushiro was outside walking down the street by the time Yutaka caught up with him.
“Koushiro! Hey Koushiro slow down!” Yutaka shouted.
“Go back and eat Yutaka.” Koushiro responded.
“I don’t want to.” Explained Yutaka. “I’m more worried about you than any expensive dinner.”
Koushiro kept walking, if anything he began to walk faster.
“Koushiro slow down. Koushiro…” Yutaka reached out and grabbed his boyfriend’s arm. “What’s wrong?”
Koushiro spun around, “I don’t know Yutaka! You tell me. Is anything wrong? Is there anything at all that you can think might be bothering me?”
Yutaka shrunk back, “Apparently there is. And I know it deals with me, but I can’t fix it until you tell me what it is.”
“If you don’t know what the problem is. I’m sure Takumi will be more than happy to remind you.” Koushiro said.
“What is that supposed to mean?” Yutaka asked.
“It means you slept with him!” Koushiro shouted.
Yutaka’s hand dropped from his boyfriend’s arm.
“And it wasn’t just him. No. It was also Ami, the hostess!”
Yutaka just stared blankly at his boyfriend.
“Not to mention the few dozen other people you’ve probably slept with!” Koushiro chocked out, his eyes began to fill with tears.
Yutaka’s face scrunched up, “Ok, so I’ve had sex with a few people. What’s the big deal?”
“WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL? WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL? You don’t think that I would have liked to have known that?” Koushiro’s screams got louder.
“I don’t really see why you need to know how many people I’ve slept with.” Yutaka said.
“Is your head that far up your own ass or are you just that stupid?” Koushiro asked.
“I’m sorry I don’t see what the big deal is. I would understand if I slept with someone else since we have begun dating or if I had caught some disease or something. But I haven’t cheated and I’m clean.”
“You don’t think I still wouldn’t want that information?
“I don’t see the point in telling you. I don’t see the point of telling anyone about it at all. I don’t brag about them. Most of them were meaningless one night stands anyway. The meant nothing to me more than getting my rocks off and having someone to sleep with for a night.” Yutaka explained. “I still don’t see why you’re still so angry. Besides it’s not like a lied to you.”
Koushiro eyes narrowed, his featured hardened. “True, you didn’t lie to me about you being a whore. You just neglected to tell me that. Instead what you lied to me about was your parents.”
Yutaka’s mouth dropped. It was at that point in time that Yutaka had a rare moment of speechlessness.
Koushiro waited a moment for Yutaka to say something. But he never said anything. “I’m going home.”
As Koushiro rounded the corner Yutaka finally broke out of his trance like state and rushed after him. “Koushiro, WAIT!”
“What do you want Yutaka?” Koushiro asked.
Yutaka answered with another question, “How did you find out about my family?”
“It doesn’t matter right now. What matters now is that fact that you’ve been lying to me and keeping secrets from me.” Koushiro pointed out.
Yutaka sighed, “I’m sorry I lied to you. I’m only human. Everyone will lie to the people they love, so they don’t think less of them. We try to make everything right. We try to have our cake and eat it too.”
Koushiro countered, “But I’m not dating everyone, I’m dating you. The person that makes me laugh, the person that takes care of me when I’m down. The person that until a few days ago I thought told me everything. But I’ve been told from other people this past week, that you haven’t told me anything. In fact you haven’t told me two of the most important things about you!”
Yutaka flung his arms into the air, “Oh yeah, because telling you about my dead parents makes PERFECT dinner conversation. When am I supposed to say it?” Yutaka then whacked his forehead, “Oh stupid me, I forgot! I was supposed to tell you right in between, ‘ I’ve slept with the waiter’, and ‘ I fucked the hostess!’ Maybe that should have been a pickup line to use on you. ‘ Hey wanna be lucky number 28, we can fuck back at my place. And don’t worry about ever needing meet my parents, They’re dead.’ ”
“Just because there isn’t an appropriate time doesn’t mean you shouldn’t say it.” Koushiro reasoned.
“I can’t believe we are even having this conversation. Want to know why? It was because I thought out of everyone else Koushiro, you would see where the hell I coming from not want to talk about my parents.” Yutaka said.
Koushiro paused before saying, “this is different.”
“How so?”
“You knew before we even started dating that my real parents were deceased.” Explained Koushiro.
“Ture, but do you go around telling everyone you meet that? Have you told all your friends?” Yutaka asked.
Koushiro’s face trembled, his hands were clenched into fists. “Well at least the family I do have, I actually talk to!”
“What are you saying?” Yutaka asked.
“I talked to your grandfather the other day. He told me how you’ve disowned him over a petty argument. How’s he’s tried to contact you several times and you simply ignore him.”
Now it was Yutaka whose teeth and fists were clenched, “You talked to him?”
“Yes I did. He was nice and polite. So I don’t see what your problem with him is.” Koushiro answered.
“No, of course you wouldn’t! Because you’re too busy being naïve and flinging shit at me, instead of finding the truth out. But since you seem to be content doing that instead…” Yutaka turned around and began walking away. “Goodbye Koushiro.”
As Koushiro stood there watching Yutaka walk away, there grew much uncertainty within him. He was uncertain what had just occurred, he was uncertain about what emotions were flowing through him, and he was uncertain what the future would hold for Yutaka, himself and their relationship.
