Chapter 8 – The “Ballet”
‘I’ve been thinking about the opera we went to see,’ said Yune one evening, ‘and I’d like to put on an entertainment of my own for you.’
Alice was immediately intrigued, and asked ‘What will it be about?’
‘I thought perhaps one of the ancient legends of Japan,’ Yune replied.
‘In that case, I shall wait for it impatiently,’ said Alice.
A few days later after supper, Yune told Alice that the entertainment was now ready to be performed, and asked her to wait ten minutes and then go to the salon. When Alice entered the salon at the appointed time, she could see that a number of oil lamps had been lit, turned down very low, and placed on the floor in a row at the far end. The dimly-lit room was suddenly filled with the sound of a phonograph recording of shamisen, flutes and drums, and from behind a screen, Yune started chanting in a low-pitched monotone.
‘One day, the goddess of the sun, Amaterasu-ou-mikami became angry about the disrespectful actions of her brother Tatehaya Susanoo-no-mikoto and hid herself in a cave. This was a most terrible thing, because without the sun, the world suffered endless night. In an attempt to lure her out, the goddess Ame-no-uzume-no-mikoto covered herself in leaves and danced lewdly for the other gods, tearing off the leaves one by one.’
At this, Yune, dressed in a costume that looked as though it was indeed made of large green leaves, stepped out from behind the screen into the dim lamplight and began to dance. The dance started off slowly and gracefully, but every few steps, she would take hold of one of the leaves and tear it off. It quickly became apparent that under the leaves, she was wearing a shift made from almost transparent fabric, and underneath that, nothing at all. As the dance progressed and more and more leaves were shed, Yune started to move more quickly and excitedly. Finally, when no leaves were left, she tore off the shift and continued to dance naked.
All the while, Alice looked on in rapt amazement. Soon, she had hitched up her skirt and her petticoats with one hand, and with the other was frigging herself through her open pantalettes.
Suddenly, the music stopped, and Yune, now at one side of the room, started to chant again, ‘Hearing all the commotion, Amaterasu-ou-mikami came out from the cave to see what was happening, and light returned to the world!’ As she chanted, she swiftly went from one side of the row of lamps to the other, turning up each one in turn so that light filled the room once more. Her skin now glistening and golden in the lamplight, she returned to the centre and stood still with her legs apart, her hands pressed together and her head bowed,
‘Bravo! Bravo!!’ cried Alice, and being unable to bear it any longer, rushed over to Yune, putting both of her hands between Yune’s legs, one from in front and one from behind, and pushed a finger deeply into each of Yune’s holes. ‘Please, Yune,’ said Alice breathlessly, ‘let’s go to bed now.’
‘Of course, my mistress,’ said Yune. Alice let her go, and she went back behind the screen, emerging a few seconds later wearing a robe. They quickly put out the lamps, then ran upstairs to Alice’s bedroom to resume where they had left off, and they did not sleep until the sun rose the next day.
Notes:
No commercial phonograph recordings of Japanese music would probably have existed in 1885. However, early phonographs could record as well as play, and many music collectors from the West took them around the world to make recordings of indigenous music.
