Chapter 8

The limo arrived at a huge mansion outside the city’s limits. Other cars and limos were line up at the doors as guests were entering the building. Dee, Ryo, and Marty climbed out of the car and went inside. As they checked their coats Cal came up to the group with smiles.

“Ah Ryo! So glad you could make it.”

“Thank you for inviting us, Cal. I like you to meet my partners at work. This is Marty and…”

“Dee Laytner. You look more beautiful in person. I’m Cal, one of the hosts of this holiday brunch. Let me introduce you to the others. They’ve been chomping at the bits to meet you. Come with me.”

The three followed Cal to a huge hall that had holiday decorations everywhere. There were huge circular tables throughout the room. There were groups wearing the most expensive casual clothes talking merrily. Cal went up to a group of men who were chatting about the gathering. When Cal cleared his throat, the group turned and smiled. One of the men approached Dee and took his hand.

“Ah, Detective Laytner. You have accepted Cal’s invitation,” smiled Tiberius as he brought the hand to his lips and kissed the back. Ryo glare daggers at the man who dare to kiss Dee in front of him.

“You’ve met him already Tiberius?” asked Cal.

“I was one of the witnesses to that horrendous crime on Friday night. Detective Laytner was doing the interviews.”

“I see.”

“So the other two happens to be your co-workers. You are…”

“This is Ryo and Marty”, smiled Cal.

“A pleasure to meet Detective Laytner’s co-workers”, smiled Tiberius as he shook their hands. “Permit me to introduce you to the others in this group.”

Tiberius introduce August, Allec, and Carinus. At that moment, Rose approached along with JJ, Drake, and Ted.

“Ah, nice for you to come Berkley”, smiled Cal. “Ah, JJ! I see you brought Drake and Ted! Great to see you again”

“Thanks for the invite”, responded JJ with a smile. “Dee! I didn’t know you would be here!”

“I sent an invitation and a car to pick him up. Too many guests wanted to meet this handsome guy”.

“Marty! When did you get back from your vacation?” smiled Ted as he gave the man a bear hug.

“Late Friday night. The misses wanted to visit Dee and Ryo so we went over to their pad yesterday. Ryo extended the invitation.”

“Man, you have got to tell us about your trip”, grin Drake as he dragged Marty away.

“Come Detective Laytner”, smiled Tiberius as he took hold of Dee’s hand. “Permit us to introduce you to the others that have gathered.” Dee tried to remove his hand but Tiberius’s grip tightens as he and Allec led the detective towards another group. Ryo was about follow when Cal placed a hand on his shoulder.

“Let’s go meet a few of the guys and get our seats for the meal”, smiled Cal as he pointed to another group merrily talking. Seeing Rose standing too close to him, Ryo happily followed his host to the laughter of Drake and JJ.

By 11:30, all of the guests were seated at the tables being served a very rich meal. Dee was seated between Tiberius and another guest by the name of Quintillus. He was the same height as Tiberius with long red hair that went down to the shoulder blades and piercing light brown eyes. Ryo was seated between Cal and Marty to his relief and to Rose disappointment. At the end of the meal, each was served a very thick fruit drink. Dee found his drink to taste very sweet as he drained the crystal wine glass.

“That’s a first”, spoke Rose as he came up and stood to Ryo’s right side. “I didn’t know you like dry red wine.”

“This wine was in no way dry”, growl Dee. “I find this to be a very sweet wine and it taste very good. And usually, I don’t drink wine that much.”

“Only when it’s free and it’s the expensive stuff”, grin Drake. “But I have to agree with Rose on this one. This wine is bitter than vinegar.”

“It is on the dry and sour side”, nodded Ryo. “Are you sure you’re alright?”

“Still a little tired, but fine. The food was great and the wine was perfect.”

Cal looked at his friends and nodded his head with a smile. The luncheon was coming to an end as games with prizes were played and music for dancing was being performed by a live band. Everyone was having fun and enjoying themselves. Dee was going to find Ryo and ask for a dance when he felt a very sharp pain coming from his abdomen. He lean his body against a wall as he tries to catch his breath. Tiberius and Rose spotted this and quickly went over to Dee.

“Detective Laytner, are you alright?” asked Tiberius as he took hold of Dee’s shoulders.

“It’s nothing. Probably something that’s disagreeing with my digestive system”, responded Dee as another sharp pain invaded his abs and head. The room began to spin as weakness was flooding his entire body.

“Detective Laytner! Dee! You don’t look well”, spoke Rose with concern written across his face.

“Let’s get him to a room with privacy”, responded Tiberius as he wrap an arm around the detective’s waist. “Quintillus can you give us a hand?”

The red hair man came over along with Ryo and Ted.

“Dee!” spoke Ryo as he immediately went to his partner’s side.

“What happen?” asked Ted.

“Hold the questions until later. Right now, we need to be discreet”, responded Quintillus as he lifted Dee into his strong arms. With the others in tow, he carried Dee out of the hall and to a room which happens to be the living room. He placed Dee on a couch while Tiberius proceeded with a quick examination.

“It seems that something has entered his system causing it to make changes”, spoke Tiberius as he placed a cool hand on Dee’s forehead. “I would say that he need to rest, but since he looked tired when he arrived, I say that he should be examined at a medical facility. Plus, he feels a bit warm.”

“He was going to set up an appointment tomorrow to get a physical”, spoke Ryo as he took hold of his partner’s hand.

“Well, he’s going to get it today”, responded Tiberius. “Quintillus has a private medical center not far from here.”

“Dee”, spoke Quintillus in a soft voice. “We need to take you to a medical center to check you out. Are you alright with that?”

“But my work…”

“Don’t worry about the case Dee”, spoke Rose. “You need to get well and your co-workers will fill in.”

“Ryo…”

“I’m here Dee. I’ll be right by your side at every minute.”

“Ok. Then let’s….Aaaagggghhhh!!!!”

Dee let out a loud scream as a very sharp pain tore through his entire body. His line of vision was fading as he was catching his breath. As soon as he closed his eyes, his body relaxed and the pain went away as unconsciousness took over.

“Dee”, screamed Ryo as he held tight to the hand.

“He’s breathing easily and his vitals are stable”, spoke Tiberius.

“Let’s move him now”, Quintillus responded as he gently lifted Dee into his arms. “Have a driver meet us at the delivery entrance and call my office. Tell them that we’re bringing in a possible RM and have everything ready.”

“Ted, tell the others what happen and that I’ll call to give them directions to the medical center”, said Rose as he guided Ryo out the room behind Quintillus. Everyone was now praying that the stalker isn’t around to see his target in such poor shape.
