A/N: Just wanted to clear this up. The anime makes the Eevolutions seem really small. Given their body type, I believe that they would be measured from the top of their shoulders to the ground. Being around 3 feet each with variations, this puts them at about the same size as North American Timber Wolves. So I have been doing my best to describe that size and I hope it's easy for you to visualize.
Heartfelt Interference
Chapter Eight
Age 15
There was excitement in the air as music played from all corners of the park. There was various different songs going that all blended into one large melody. The scent of assorted foods both sweet and savory drifted all the way up to you in the top of the observation deck. The observation deck wrapped around the largest tree in the park, though it wasn't taller than the ferris wheel that had been set up. It was almost easy to overlook the fact that you were still nestled in Mauville City when you were in this park. Especially during the annual festival that the your school put on. Sure you had signed up for self-study two years prior but in your heart it was still your school. It probably always would be. Just like someone's hometown; there was no replacing it in your heart.
You turned to look behind you just as Max came up with a treat in hand for you. It was your favorite - something you'd been planning to get later on that night. You smiled at him so genuinely you were pretty sure that the fog on his glasses came from the rising blush. It was nice to see that after two years you weren't the one to be so embarrassed anymore. Of course you didn't tease him about the kind gesture or the blush that followed, you merely accepted the offering and started to eat it unreservedly.
"Are you having fun?" Max asked as he made his way to the railing.
You could see him practically standing on his toes so he could look over for a 'better' view, his hands firmly gripping the wooden railings as he leaned over. There was swarms of people below and each person was as individual as could be. There were plenty of colors swimming around both on their clothes and on the decoration. It would have been so easy to forget why you were attending the faire in the first place. Well, one of the reasons you were attending.
"Yeah."
Max looked over to you with curiosity shining from behind his glasses. "Are you nervous?"
"Definitely."
He smiled and patted your shoulder encouragingly. "You'll do great."
"I'm not a trainer. I'm not a coordinator. I'm not even a licensed breeder yet. Why was I the one selected?"
"Probably because you'll make an impression on stage," Max answered before he suddenly found his feet very interesting.
"What?"
His blush should have been your answer or numerous of other cues. But you were quite distracted by the faire and what you knew was coming up soon. Though that didn't stop you from starting to get the picture after you'd asked your question.
"Oh," you responded to spare him from speaking up.
Suddenly you wanted a mirror. You knew that you were physically healthy and that you weren't unfortunate in looks. But you had never seen yourself the way that Max apparently did. It wasn't that you were modest or anything. It was just strange to know that some people actually thought that way when they looked into a mirror. Maybe it was part of growing up but the idea of looking into a mirror and finding your reflection attractive seemed really odd.
"I'm supposed to be showing off the pokemon bred on the ranch," you spoke out in an off balanced tone - he'd thrown you through a loop with the unexpected answer.
"Having a cute girl on stage couldn't hurt either," he said as he continued to looked down at his shoes.
You smiled as you finished off the last bite of the treat that Max had brought you. Taking a deep breath and looking in another direction helped you to control the blush that had started to color your face. Casually you moved your long red hair to one shoulder so the back of your neck could finally feel the cool night air. It wasn't exactly silent around you and Max but none of the sound poured from his or your lips. Not until it was time to head down for your part in the night's festivities. Then it was a bunch of whispers of 'good luck' as you headed down the stairs that wrapped around the tree.
As you got to the bottom, Max finally spoke back up. "Where's your pokemon?"
"Rorsh and Eevee?" you asked just to be sure.
"Yeah. I thought you'd have brought them," Max spoke out as he searched.
"They're by the fountain just ahead," you answered easily.
"Did you leave them there this whole time?" Max asked. When you shook your head in negation, he seemed confused. "Then how do you know? I can't see anything through all these people."
"I just do," you answered with a light shrug. You pulled at his hand to hurry him through the crowd. "Come on."
Soon enough your two pokemon were revealed to the both of you. Rorsh lay on the edge of the fountain, his body taking more more room than two and a half humans. Eevee took up the other half human length. You watched as Rorsh's purple eyes opened up, instantly becoming sharp when he saw the teen at your side. You knew that Rorsh was not fond of Max though you could not figure out why. Max had nothing but amazement for the pokemon and he treated you very well. Yet Rorsh still held to the idea that Max was, as he put it a long time ago and repeated often, 'worse than useless.' Nothing you told him or showed him made ever made his view on Max less severe.
"Good luck," Max said again.
Only this time it wasn't just words. You felt his lips press into your cheek, soft and warm. The warmth spread through the skin at contact and you remained absolutely still in shock. When he started to pull away you took the chance to be bold. You grabbed his hand before he had time to walk away and held him in place. Though you made a bold decision you executed it rather slowly. Your lips touched Max's as you and he stood before the fountain. The kiss was soft and hesitant, everything you could have expected from a first kiss. You could feel the heat from Max's face igniting your own even though you couldn't see it with your eyes closed. His fingers curled tightly around yours as the other one nervously went to hold your waist.
You smiled and pulled back slowly. The butterflies flapping in your stomach were doing their summer dance. Max looked particularly stunned as he still held onto you and that, itself, brought color to your skin. Once reality caught up with the both of you, Max's expression shifted from stunned to an energetic grin.
"Well now you have to go have fun," he explained as though it were a causational situation or something.
"I'll try," you answered after you took a deep breath.
Your fingers stretched under his. You enjoyed the simple comfort and warmth that the touch brought. Being around pokemon all day every day was wonderful but none of them had human hands. Some did get close, like Mr. Mime for instant, but there was a strange creature comfort of his hand around yours that slowly burned you inside. Only this burn felt good. Especially after the kiss.
"One more for good luck?" You asked, trying your best to sound as casual as possible.
Max looked like a mix of emotions you didn't have time to place. He nodded awkwardly as he pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose. Thankfully he hadn't outgrown you and so you were easily able to lean back in and press your lips to his. His hand slowly gripped at the material of your shirt from where it had stayed the first time while yours curled up around him to grip onto his shoulder. Unconsciously you stepped closer to him as you pulled back for a split moment, rubbing your lips over his once more. This time you were the one with the blush warming your skin. You leaned your forehead against his despite that. The sound of music in the area shifted to one you knew would proceed your own show.
Reluctantly you moved away from him. Rorsh and Eevee hopped down off of the fountain as well. As you finally parted from Max with whispered words, your pokemon walked between your legs garnering much denied attention. You smiled at them and walked behind them, letting Eevee lead the way. He seemed more excited about the show than anyone. Rorsh, however, seemed almost as though he were contemplating something. Which, of course, he wasn't willing to share until he thought about it entirely. Unlike Eevee, he wasn't one to rush into a situation without considering everything. Once he did set his mind to a task he was extremely adamant about it. At one time you thought that you were stubborn but Rorsh had out-stubborned you on pretty much everything. The only thing that you had 'won' on was the issue of him going to school with you and look how that turned out. You ended up having to leave in the middle of the day because of a panic attack - one that, as soon as Rorsh got there, he was able to help you out of.
It didn't take long to get behind the stage even though there were at least a hundred different people gathered around. You took in a deep breath and closed your eyes as the music slowly faded away. Now was the time.
With purpose you walked through the curtains. The stage was set on ground level with curtains behind in a large square for the people about to perform. The area of the actual stage was marked off by a glittering silver and gold rope with black rod iron stands lodged into their areas of the ground, marking off a half circle shape. People gathered round in all shapes and sizes. As you stood in the middle you could feel all the eyes upon you. You didn't need to open yours to know that. There was at least a hundred people standing around staring at you. So you took one more deep breath before sending out a whistle.
You stood still at the front of the stage, direct center and waiting. Soon the curtains parted to reveal to Machoke carrying what looked to be an extremely large, glass fountain. In this case, looks were only slightly misleading. It was a fountain but it had yet to be installed into a water system to make it operate as of yet. Despite this, the base of the fountain was filled with crystal clear water and all four Luvdisc evenly spaced out. Their vivid pink, heart shape bodies stood out and were clearly visible through the thick aquarium grade glass while the Machoke who carried them in took to a kneeling position. Each of them sent one hand, palm up, to the ground as the other went to the sky to create an even slope with them mirroring the other's position.
Finally you opened your eyes and began to speak. "Every year, people take off on their own unique pokemon journeys to learn more about themselves and the world around them. And each year new trainers are given a choice between three starter pokemon - the grass type Treecko, the fire type Torchic, or the water type Mudkip. These pokemon are great for beginners. But have you ever thought that perhaps you wanted something different to start out with?"
At that moment, two Machops cartwheeled in from the side of the stage. Their cartwheels took them to the out stretched Machoke's hands. They ran up and over the evolved pokemons' arms in perfect synchronization, barely avoiding each other in mid air as they curled into a ball. The Machokes' caught them with their hands and rolled them over their shoulders while the Luvdisc in the glass fountain started to shoot lines of water into the air.
The water glistened in the night's surrounding faire lights as it rained back down into the ring of water. As the first few drops landed back down, both Machokes sent their rolled up Machops into the air across the fountain. The Machops unfurled in midair before landing in perfect form in front of the now posed and flexing Machokes.
You could hear the excited sounds of the crowd around you and smiled as you headed towards the side of the stage instead. So far so good. With a brief whistle, though you were sure that neither Rorsh nor Eevee really needed the cue, you signalled the next part. From behind the stage your pokemon appeared, each hopping onto the back of the fountain and walking around the lip until they reached the front. Once they did, Eevee turned around so he wasn't facing the crowd and leaped up. He landed on the small pedestal at the top while Rorsh took the exact center on the normal lip of the fountain.
"Luvdisc if you please," you said with a smile without turning around.
You knew just by sound alone that the water guns turned into water pulse. The torment of water took to the sky as Rorsh controlled the shapes made using Psychic. His gem lit up, sparkling in the darkness was Eevee stayed perfectly poised. It wasn't until Rorsh started to swirl the water of the pulses faster and faster that Eevee started to glow. The green orb surrounding Eevee was from Recover, its light acting like a disco in the ring of water only a little above his head. The luvdisc in the fountain stopped using water pulse at the same time that Rorsh let the water fall back down in gentle rain. The raindrops caught the light produced by Eevee's recover, scattering green light all around the stage and into the crowd.
As the last few drops fell you called out once more, "Machop, Machoke, it's your turns once more."
With a bit of posturing that you hadn't expected from one of the Machop, the two of them turned to face one another. Machoke on either side grabbed the machop in front of them. With one hand the strong pokemon tossed their younger counterparts into the air right at one another. In mid air, the Machops released two pokemon out of their pokeballs so that the silver light arced across the fountain. They landed with their backs turned to one another on the opposite sides of the stage like warriors who had just finished a battle.
"At the Linaré ranch we not only breed and hatch pokemon but we raise them to many different specificities. Including the league mandated starter pokemon qualifications," you spoke out to the awed crowd.
The pokemon who were released from the pokeballs took to landing right on top of one another. Beautifly's wings stretched out colorfully over Electrike's green and yellow fur. As Electrike used discharge, Beautifly went up into the air. Not too high, of course, because the crowd still needed to see what was going on. He flew wonderfully in the sky, using charm on the crowd as he flew. Meanwhile Electrike circled around the base of the glass fountain as the Luvdisc started up the small streams from water gun once more. His discharge left a streak around the glorified glass bowl as he ran around it again and again, lighting up the stage with white and yellow this time. All the while Rorsh made sure that the crowd and luvdisc came to no harm from the electric attack, his red jewel practically on fire as he controlled the reach of the discharge.
As Beautifly swirled around the top of the fountain, everyone got in position. Eevee jumped down to rest on the right side ledge of the glass fountain while Electrike took the left. Machoke stood, flexing and staring out at the crowd, as they stood beside the glass while each Machop came to stand beside them. The luvdisc filled the the spaces between the three pokemon sitting on the fountain while Beautifly took the pedestal spot that Eevee had recently abandoned.
"So if you're wanting to go on an adventure and need a partner by your side, remember that the Linaré ranch currently has open enrollment and commissions. We have all types of pokemon for you to select from and what you've seen before you is only a small taste of what you will see there! I thank you for your time and I hope to see you there," you finished with a smile, taking a bow. "Now let's hear it for the pokemon performers!"
The crowd around you clapped. You even heard some whistles from the crowd - different whistles than what you had expected to hear. As you tried to hide your confusion at the sound, Rorsh and Eevee moved out of their lined up positions to come sit at your feet. Rorsh closest to you of course, until Eevee jumped up. You barely had time to think before you had to catch him in your arms. His warmth was a welcome and it made you realize, suddenly, that your shirt had gotten quite damp from the performance. Even with Rorsh having controlled the water apparently some had slipped out at some point, that or the air had just gotten saturated. Oh well, the performance had still gone off beautifully.
Without waiting too much longer you turned around, Eevee still in your arms, you headed back stage. The majority of the pokemon followed you. Of course for the luvdisc to follow you, Machoke first had to pick the fountain up and carry it back behind the curtain once more. Once you were safely nestled back there you recalled the machokes, machops, electrike, and beautifly back into their pokeballs. Then it was on to the luvdisc. Once all ten pokemon were back in their pokeballs you put those pokeballs in the special, protective case with the Linaré ranch's seal atop it. Normally people were only allowed to carry six pokemon at any one time, that much was true. But this case was kind of like an embassy's pouch. So long as the pokemon were only being used for ranch purposes then it wasn't against the law to carry them. They were pokemon that you had borrowed off the ranch to put on the performance, not ones registered to you. So it wasn't like you were trying to keep them all.
"That went well, right?" you asked Eevee who was currently snuggling into your damp chest.
He looked up at you and yipped an 'Eee' happily. You looked down at Rorsh to see him nod, though he still looked to be contemplating something or other. With a smile, you lightly pat his head. You took only the barest of moments to enjoy the better than silk and velvet fur of his before withdrawing.
"Come on, I bet you guys are starving. Let me to tell Ma--" But Rorsh had already lifted you into the air so that you floated beside him as he walked. "...or I can just call him on the pokegear. That works too."
Trusting Rorsh to keep you afloat until you got home, he was actually quite good at that, you closed your eyes and hugged Eevee as though he were a stuffed animal. The two year and some odd month old pokemon didn't seem to mind as he licked at the side of your neck. It took a while to get back home the way that Rorsh deemed it necessary but considering the fact that you weren't the one walking, you weren't the one tired by the time everyone got home.
Rorsh laid down on your bed, refusing to move even as you gave him the 'really' look. As you sat Eevee down in his own bed, you decided to let it go as you stripped out of your clothes. You tossed the damp things to the side. Once you were redressed in a white cotton gown, you walked out of your room and into the main room. You placed the case of pokeballs on the dinning table so that your parents could see them when they walked in. Then you headed back to your room. Not at all surprising, Rorsh had yet to get up out of your bed. So with a determined and challenging look on your face, you got into bed beside him.
Rorsh opened large purple eyes, stunned by your actions. You hadn't really curled up in bed beside him for two years, not since he had changed into an espeon. The only reason that had ever stopped you was the fact that you didn't want to make him uncomfortable with the sensitivity of fur that came with being an espeon. It had just been one of the adjustments you made to your actions to better suit him, or so that's how you thought about it.
But if he wanted to claim your bed and not move instead of getting over on his own, then so be it. You turned your back towards him as you pulled the sheet up over your body. What wasn't surprising at all was that as soon as you were too comfortable to move, Eevee jumped up onto the bed. You let out a breath that was probably supposed to have been a scold at some point when you felt him. He curled into your stomach and tucked his tail over his nose like he often did. What was surprising was that as you drifted off to sleep, Rorsh spread out across the whole of your back. One of his lilac furred legs slipped between yours while the other bent of your hips. His front paws curled between his chest and your back but his had rested right by yours.
By the time he did this, however, you were too asleep to really register much beyond the fact that there was a warm body pressed near you. Warm and comforting in it's embrace. As you drifted to sleep, the smallest sleepiest smile on your face reflected on his.
