Chapter Seven
Kael stood with his arms crossed gazing at the humans and their celebration. It was interesting after being entombed for hundreds of years to see how far civilization had come. Before, these mortals would worship to statues of the gods and celebrate with feasts after a great harvest yield. Now there were no gods, their powers bound to chosen mortal vessels that wielded their powers. It perplexed Kael. Why would a god give up immortality to serve humans? What was so special about these creatures?
Jumping to the next rooftop following the floral parade floats, Kael cautiously guarded his tongue. After persuading the vessels holding his siblings to meet, it was now time to observe. If he were to take over the planet, how much of resistance would he encounter? So far it looked like his creations held a certain loyalty to him yet loved their new home. What could he use to sway their undevout loyalty? He wouldn’t be destroying the planet, just enslaving the weak earthlings with saiyan overlords.
Trunks was amazed at the festival seeing the floats lead the procession before the royal family brought up the rear in a glass carriage lead by white mares. The senshi traveled along at strategic locations waving to the crowd and showing off their powers. Rei controlled a flaming phoenix, Ami blew bubbles into the crowd shaped like senshi, Minako dressed as the classic Sailor V, Makoto rode an electricity dragon, Haruka controlled a golem made of earth, Michiru rode a horse made of water, and Setsuna walked shrouded in a mysterious mist.
It was strange seeing Makoto exhibit her powers, a topic they hadn’t spoken of. Yet a part of him felt this was also a show of strength to Kael. His creator stood unphased by the beauty and power show, thick muscular arms folded over his chest.
“Which one are you introducing me to?” asked Goten leaning on the ledge from their rooftop view.
“Minako, she’s dressed as Sailor V,” Trunks supplied and heard his friend give a low whistle. The quartet floated to another rooftop as the parade came to an end near the entrance of a carnival. The royal family and senshi took center stage on a large platform where Queen Serenity began a speech.
“Thank you for supporting Crystal Tokyo as we celebrate five years. It is wonderful to see our citizens happy and well taken care of. I understand there has been a lot of change to our city these past few years but I am happy to announce a new partnership. From our neighbor Satan City, Capsule Corps has decided to call Crystal Tokyo a home away from home. This will open new jobs in the Diamond District within the next year. I hope this new addition to our city will improve your lives further as we continue to live in peace,” Serenity announced and paused as the crowd cheered. “Let’s celebrate!”
Vegeta snorted at the speech. “Where’s the food I was promised?”
“At the palace, we’ll go soon.” Trunks turned back to the festivities watching the king and queen use a large pair of golden scissors to cut the large red ribbon in front of the gate. The rides started to come to life as citizens entered while some families stayed outside to meet their favorite senshi. The senshi interacted with excited children, signing posters, and taking pictures.
“Let’s get a closer look at the floats while we wait, looks like you can vote for your favorite,” Goten suggested seeing Vegeta becoming restless. Trunks nodded and led the way. The small crowd seemed to part and stare at the muscular men as they viewed the flowered decorations. Each float represented a senshi and showed off the designer’s skills. He remembered watching parts of the floats moving, of course, his favorite being of Makoto in a delicate ballet dancer pose. A sound system blared her voice announcing an attack called “Flower Hurricane” as pink rose petals were shot into the air around the spinning heroine. Goten elbowed Trunks in the side and wiggled his brow. “Bet I know which one you’re voting for.”
Trunks couldn’t help but chuckle and take a voting slip handed to him by a sandy-haired man.
“Vote for us, the best float of the year,” stated Motoki, a happy little boy standing on a bucket next to him handing out ballots.
“Made with the best roses in town from the emerald princess herself,” boasted the little boy. Trunks turned in surprise to look at the father-son duo remembering the stress Makoto went through delivering roses to her ex-fiancé. It was ironic, the man who’d hurt Makoto so much was now using her image and roses for votes. “Dad…dad! Here she comes! Can I get a picture with her? Please?”
Trunks turned at the little boy’s begging to see Makoto walking toward them still dressed as the green senshi. She gave him a wave but was sidetracked by the little boy running up to her. Crouching down to the five-year-old’s level, Makoto produced a bright smile.
“Hi there,” Makoto greeted the excited child holding ballots.
“Y-y-you’re my favorite senshi!” he quickly blurted out.
“Thank you. What makes me your favorite?” The little boy seemed to calm down a bit while he thought.
“Uh, I like roses and rainstorms too. And when you make a dragon, it’s so cool!” Makoto couldn’t help but giggle. “C-can I get a picture with you? My dad’s over there and can take it.”
“Yes, come in close,” Makoto suggested. Twisting into a pose with the little boy, Makoto tried to keep her smile up when she sees Motoki snapping the shot on his phone.
“Thank you!” squealed the little boy throwing his arms around her neck. Makoto took the little hug and watched the little boy run back to Motoki so excited. Turning away from the future she could have had, Makoto made her way to her new future family.
“I’m hungry woman, I was promised food,” Vegeta stated crossing his arms over his chest with an irritated scowl. Makoto can’t help but giggle at her future father-in-law.
“I was just coming to get you, there’s food and entertainment back at the palace while us ladies get ready for the ball,” Makoto explained. “Minako offered to lead the way since I have to run to the flower shop. How do you like the festival Kael?”
“It is…interesting. I would like to experience more of this festival,” he stated.
“The ball isn’t for another five hours, why not check out the carnival?” Makoto suggested with a warm smile.
“There’s so many food stands I want to try,” Goten said excitedly.
“Do you need any help?” Trunks offered.
“I’d love some unless you’d feel better suited here?” Makoto asked. Trunks eyed Vegeta and Goten who seemed to have things under control.
“I’ll text you when we’re done and you can swing back by,” Goten offered a wink. Trunks felt it was settled and went with Makoto. Hand in hand, they took the quiet back streets to her flower shop enjoying the silence in each other’s company. Preparing for the arrival of Kael, and Trunks overseeing setting up his business, left them busy. Trunks had set-up in the front library as his makeshift office where he was programming the new building for Capsule Corps. At first, she was interested in his work but found he was working with a coding program all day, and late into the evening, creating an exact replica of the current Capsule Corps in Satan City. While he had the original program available, one of the regulations with Crystal Tokyo is the building needed to fit into the current design—which meant Trunks had to re-make his program to match city codes and ordinances.
Makoto smiled to herself, this hulking muscle man hunched over a laptop was comical to see.
“What’s so funny?” asked Trunks as Makoto unlocked the back door to her shop.
“I’m glad to have some alone time with you, you’ve been working a lot lately,” she admitted. Trunks took this opportunity to kiss her before she could flick the lights. Her mouth was soft and warm like he remembered, and he didn’t have the heart to wake her when he came to bed late. In the mornings, she was gone out to her flowers. Picking her up by the hips, Trunks set her down on the nearest counter. Makoto gasped at the cold metal suddenly against her thighs where her senshi skirt didn’t cover.
“Remind me how your outfit works again,” Trunks asked, taking a break from her intoxicating mouth.
“It regenerates when I transform again,” she admitted, blushing at the wicked thoughts bubbling up. There was something about him that made her want to take some risks and try new things…such as her senshi uniform.
“So, if it happens to accidentally rip it’s not a big deal?” he asked with a grin.
“Not at all,” she said and pulled him in for another kiss. Trunks pulled her in close and felt his hands impatient with excitement. Before his fingers could touch bare thighs, the back door opened with a burst of bright light.
“Oh, excu-u-se me,” came the stuttered response as the door quickly shut. Letting out an exasperated sigh, Makoto closed her eyes for a moment and drummed her fingers impatiently against her makeshift metal seat.
“Serenity must have sent a car,” Makoto stated with disappointment. “Rain check?”
“Yeah,” he said and kissed her softly. “I’ll meet you at the palace in a few hours.”
The hours leading up to preparing for the ball were heavenly. After the pomp and circumstance, the senshi retreated back to the palace for full-body massages, naps, and snacks before slowly going through hair and makeup and dressing for the evening. Trunks waited patiently in the drawing-room until it was time to escort his lady into the ball. Vegeta and Goten enjoyed eating through the festival and some of the rides while Kael continued to look unimpressed. Trunks was unsure how to read his creator but kept a trained eye on the serious man. He looked different dressed in a tuxedo that was quickly taken in to fit him. Would he enjoy himself?
“Did you have festivities like this?” asked King Endymion trying to make conversation. Kael slowly looked at the mortal before deciding if it was worth an answer.
“No. Mortals used to worship us. There were festivals and praise for each of us gods, and sometimes even sacrifices,” Kael responded and smirked at the king’s displeasure. That was something he noticed about this world, the mortals were weakened by their own advancements.
“Do you know what you’re looking for in a new planet?” asked Haruka. Kael was beginning to grow annoyed of these continual questions revolving around his plans.
“No. I may just create one.” Artemis entered just in time to announce the ladies were ready for their escorts. Trunks felt the relief move through the room and couldn’t wait to enjoy the ball. Goten and Vegeta were on Kael duty giving him free rein to enjoy tonight. Lining up as directed by Artemis, Trunks waited in the wings until the formal announcement. When his name was called, he joined Makoto at the top of the steps and felt his breath taken away. Rei outdid herself making a gorgeous sparkling emerald gown that complimented Makoto’s height and showed off her beautiful long legs. He almost couldn’t wait to take her home.
Escorting her down the steps, Trunks felt the cameras on them as the first time he’d experienced the paparazzi in Crystal Tokyo. At the bottom of the long staircase, she modeled the dress for them before they went under the floral arches and down another set of stairs into the outdoor garden ball. Having the ball partially in the ballroom and garden provided a great atmosphere and enough room for mingling without feeling overcrowded.
“You look stunning,” he stated and gave her a soft peck on the cheek.
“Thank you,” Makoto said with a blush. “I almost thought of skipping the ball so we could have some time to ourselves.”
“We could cut out early, Goten and Vegeta are on duty tonight,” Trunks suggested.
“I’d like that.” Makoto enjoyed her evening meeting with a few local florists, giving suggestions on growing roses, and talking about her flowers. The new strand she’d created was causing a buzz through the ball and she was glad for the feedback. Over time, they grew separate as Trunks met with local businesses to network and talk about the upcoming technological advancements his company would bring to Crystal Tokyo. Makoto couldn’t help but watch him from across the room looking so animated as he networked.
“Your dress is beautiful,” Minako said suddenly by her side. Makoto pushed up a warm smile.
“Thank you, I love how Rei brought out some of your natural goddess of love heritage,” Makoto commented and looked past Minako to see Haruka and Trunks together. She couldn’t help but feel uncertain as she followed them with her eyes.
“Speaking of love, how are you two love-birds?” Minako pried with a wiggling brow. Makoto couldn’t help but giggle.
“You’re a little late, our friend seduced her handsome companion weeks ago,” Rei interjected. Minako gasped and looked at her blushing friend. “I hear he’s even moved into the master suite.”
“Makoto, you minx,” Minako teased and pulled a fresh glass of champagne off a passing tray. “A toast to love, happiness, and marriage.”
“Thank you, I am very happy,” Makoto admitted and looked down at the bubbly liquid. “Do you think I’m moving too fast? We’ve barely known each other a month but it feels like much longer.”
“Given the new circumstances, I would suggest slowing down,” Rei answered calmly. “Get rid of the contract and move at your own pace.”
“I don’t want to see you get hurt Mako but you’d have to consider his liabilities and possible risks being here,” said Minako lowering her voice. “Are we all safe? What would have happened if he were in the city when beings arrived? Setsuna and Ami found that strong beings seeking them out to fight were common occurrences. Lots of people have been injured over the years in Satan City.”
Makoto couldn’t help but frown at the information and felt her chest hurt. She was in a tough position that came between duty and love. If the queen asked it, she would stop seeing him but a part of her knew Serenity wouldn’t ask her to give up on love. Serenity was too kind and cared for their happiness. That’s what the rest of her friends were there for, to run interference even when it was a difficult topic and her happiness was a difficult topic. After being heartbroken for so long, this was the first man she’d been with that helped her feel complete. Trunks complimented her flaws and was the strength in her insecurities.
“Usa’s expecting,” Rei revealed. Makoto felt her breath catch at the news. Normally it would be lovely news but under these circumstances it was heartbreaking. She didn’t have a lot of time to think, they would need a solution soon.
“Thank you for being honest,” Makoto uttered but didn’t truly feel it. “I’ll let you know what we decide.”
Rei and Minako watched their friend disappear into the crowd and felt the weight of their burden. It had been difficult trying to talk to her when she looked so happy. Over the years they’d seen Makoto focus on her business and stay in touch out of necessity. This situation felt like it was pulling them apart in different directions and made them curious if their friendship could withstand the toll.
“I hate looking like the bad guy,” Rei muttered and finished the rest of her drink. “Why couldn’t we have waited?”
“Haruka’s hoping this little push will get them to leave together,” Minako admitted. “I’m sorry you had to be the bad cop, I hate breaking her heart just as much.”
“As selfish as it sounds, I really wanted to make her a wedding dress,” Rei commented.
“It would have been a beautiful wedding.”
AN: It’s been a while. I lost my writing groove for a long time, had health problems, and moved to a foreign country within the past few years. I feel like I’m able to write again and remember where I was going with this. Hopefully, I can finish this soon. Thank you all for your support!
