  • A routine of sorts was established. Nights were spent in Doc’s lab, mornings and sometimes afternoons, were spent with Walter and his varied amusements, and the rest of the day was passed trying to sleep. Seras’ nightmares made sleep just as awful as being awake most of the time. She had no sense of how much time had passed since her capture. She had to guess that it had been more than two weeks, but fewer than four. She often wondered just how long the Germans intended to float over the wreckage of London. Or were they still over London? Would she know if they had gone?

Night after night, Seras suffered through Doc’s poking and prodding. Some nights he tested how quickly she could heal, others he tested how much blood she could lose before losing consciousness, every night brought its own ordeal.

Seras was learning how to be as silent and unresponsive as Captain Günsche. She spent more time in the silence she created in her head than she did in the lab where her body was. Until the night she found she had company there.

It was near the end of the night. Walter would appear soon and escort (carry) Seras back to the room they shared. She’d already been through the hardest part of the night and was staring vacantly at Doc’s back waiting for the hardest part of the morning to start.

    …die Plättchen sind wunderbar ausgeführt…

…Morgen muß ich versuchen, ihr Blut abzunehmen…

…ein Glück, dass der Butler sie gefangen genommen hat…

    What?
She shook herself and looked more closely at Doc. I’m hearing things. Doc’s not talking. He’s doing that annoying thing he does when he shoves a pencil in his mouth and slowly shreds it with his fangs. Seras looked around, but didn’t see anyone else who could have been speaking. I’m losing my mind. Hallucinating in German?

Hallucinating in German? How can I hallucinate in a language I don’t speak?

Seras tried to clear her mind again, it was hard to regain that empty calm when she was hoping against hope that she was right; that she wasn’t hallucinating; that she had found a new ability in the midst of this nightmare that might give her a new advantage. She looked at Captain Günsche where he was standing, staring at her. If you wanted a place to empty your mind, the Captain’s eyes were the definition of emptiness. She locked into his red gaze and found the silence she needed.

    …ich muß es testen…

    … elastisch…

There it was! She had it. At least she had something. She reached out and was able to dip into Doc’s mind again, this time intentionally. It was frustrating that she didn’t know German. Hold on… She tried to get, not just the words, but the meaning…there was a shadow under the running monologue in Doc’s head. It was like seeing a phantom scene with reality superimposed over it; the phantom scene was the meaning under the reality of the words. She could just about…

“Wake up, Seras. It’s time to go home.”

Seras pulled away from Doc to Walter. Without meaning to, she skimmed across the surface of Walter’s mind. She snapped her eyes closed and cringed. It was…it was painful in there.

“Oh, now why the face? I haven’t even done anything yet.”

“Flashback, alright? Just leave me alone.”

“Is that any way to talk to me, Seras?” his voice was mild, but his eyes were not.

Damn. “No, Walter, it isn’t,” she replied tonelessly. The shock of that glimpse under Walter’s controlled veneer had shaken her too much to remember not to antagonize him. I’ll be paying for that today.

    •••

Later, as Seras lay in her now accustomed position with Walter’s arm draped across her as he slept, she thought about how this new discovery might help her escape. It wasn’t an offensive ability, at least not that she was sure of, but it had potential.

She closed her eyes and tried to feel anyone else around her. Next door seemed like a logical place to start. She was reasonably sure that the rooms on either side of Walter’s were sleeping quarters; there was probably a sleeping vampire just a few feet from her. It was very different working “blind” than when she had a familiar subject in her sight to focus on.

This is going to take practice. Her first attempt was too unfocused and the first mind she found was the one closest to her. She jerked against Walter as she got a glimpse of his dreamscape. Her movement woke him immediately, but she had a moment where she saw him, young and human, dancing across a field of bodies, wires cutting a swathe around him. She could feel his rapture in the moment and wondered if that was what Walter had felt then, or if the memory was colored by what he had become.

Walter’s arm tightened around her and his voice was low in her ear, “Going somewhere?”

“No…no, I was dreaming and it woke me.”

    “Go back to sleep.”

She settled back against him and stilled herself. Now I know where not to go…let’s try this again. Through the wall…no sense of anyone there…back up…through another wall…there…a mind…cold, sleeping…no dreams, just deep sleep…push, just a little…just a touch…pushing a memory into the sleeping vampire’s head, a memory of her Master released upon London…the horror of what he had let out of himself, the glimpses she had caught of what he did to Nazi and Iscariot alike…she pushed the memories in, when she felt the vampire sink into them, she twisted them like a knife.

The mind in her telepathic grip quailed under the assault. She was pushed out as the vampire in the room next door flung himself out of his sleep with a scream that penetrated the walls. Walter stirred next to her, but she kept her body relaxed against his, grateful that neither her heartbeat nor breathing could betray her excitement.

    A weapon!

    •••

Seras spent the next several days working with her newfound ability. She discovered that she could eavesdrop on thoughts and insert her own inventions into the minds of dreamers around her. She was working on subtly influencing the actions of some of the weaker-minded vampires that they would see in the hallways as she was being ferried to and from the lab.

Her first clear success in influencing a lesser vampire came in the cafeteria. There was one man whose thoughts about her were particularly distasteful. She used him as her test and was gratified when she was able to cause him to lose his grip on his cup and drop it to the floor. If she could do that to someone pointing a gun at her, she was making excellent progress.

Walter’s mind remained a painful enigma to her. She could not touch his thoughts without the indescribable rage and pain of them pushing her away. The only thing she could be sure of from her brief glimpses of his psyche was that he was not nearly as owned by the Nazis as they thought he was.

It was time to try to take some cautious action. She had been very careful to keep her mental espionage on a surface level with the more powerful vampires, the Werewolves. She knew that it was possible to feel someone rummaging in one’s thoughts, she’d felt Alucard do it a few times. She did not want to be caught.

Because of her caution, Seras wasn’t able to dig as deeply for information about Walter or her situation as she would have liked. She needed that information to be at the top of Doc’s mind, since he was the most knowledgeable about both what he planned to do with her and what he had done with Walter.

She took her chance one night after she had done her best to cooperate with Doc’s many and painful tests. “Doc?”

“Ja?” He didn’t look away from the screen that held his attention.

“I know you said you wouldn’t tell me anything that I didn’t need to immediately know, but…” she didn’t need to feign her anxiety, “…but it scares me not knowing. Will you please just tell me if you’re going to do to me what you did to Walter?” She watched his mind carefully for anything he would reveal.

Flash of the old Walter (her Walter) on that same hated lab table. She swooped on his memory of Walter’s time in his “care” and learned more than she expected.

He gave her a good show of pretending to think about his answer. If she didn’t have an insider’s view, she would have thought he was being sincere in his consideration of her question. He shook his head and looked at her sadly, “I’m sorry Fräulein, but I can’t tell you. It will depend upon the Major’s order.”

Liar! You can’t do it to me. I know you can’t do that to me because you know you can’t. I’m already a Midian, and I’m a real vampire. What you did to Walter can only be done as part of your process to make artificial vampires. At least I have that much reassurance. And I know that you’re not as sure of the process as you tell the Major.

The next morning, Walter noticed that Seras seemed less anxious than she had been since he had captured her. He played his games with her and they didn’t affect her the way they usually did. He was unsettled and was only reassured when she woke later that day, as she so often did, sobbing from some nightmare.

Seras was dreaming. Baron Harkonnen was there, yet again. He continued to complain about the dark crate he was stuck in, the fact that the spice was not flowing and that she wasn’t paying attention to his attempts to get her to touch his magic trigger. She told him that he couldn’t upset her that way. He tried to retort with the line that had left her despairing before. “Where there’s life, there’s hope, Seras. But you’re not alive, are you?”

“No, but I’m not dead, either.”
She woke up sobbing in relief.

A/N: This chapter was really hard to write. I rewrote it in its entirety, three times and I’m still not thrilled with the result. Feedback on what sucks about this chapter that I could fix would be greatly appreciated. I forgot to thank RavenTears for her help with the German in this chapter. I'm grateful to her for saving me from the hell that is fangirl German.
