A/N- I've been ratted out. I have neglected to mention how wonderful my bata, J, is. truth be told, my spelling really sucks.
Tohru sighed as she stretched and got dressed. It was a beautiful morning. The air was so crisp. She smiled a little as she thought about the kiss she and Kyo shared the night pervious as she made her way down the stairs. Shigure, Kyo and Ayame sat around the table with sullen expressions. It was obvious the snake had been crying. Tears were still wet on his red, puffy checks. Ayame held the damp tissue in his hand.
“Ayame, what happened?” Tohru sat next to the snake.
“Yuki… he…” that was all he could stammer out before crumbling into tears again. Tohru lightly rubbed his back. She looked to Shigure for answers.
“Yuki…” The dog took a deep breath, “he… died.”
Tohru’s had fell away from Ayame in shock. “What happened?” the riceball’s eyes started to mist over.
“They found him in his room this morning. He wrote something that looked like a spell on the mirror and stabbed himself with a kitchen knife.” Kyo stared very intently into his cup of water. Ayame was now crying so hard Shigure had taken him into his arms, rocking him back and forth. Tohru whipped her eyes and went into the kitchen. Kyo immediately followed. He watched her stand at the sink, small hands shaking as she tried to wash the green onions for breakfast. Tohru set the vegetable in the sink and sat in front of it crying. Kyo sat behind her and put his hands on her shoulders, laying his head against her back. Tohru turned around and looked at him with a lost look in her eyes. The cat put his hand at the base of her skull and moved her so just her head rested on his shoulder; his version of a hug. Tohru cried harder and wrapped her arms around Kyo before he could stop her. Much to Kyo’s amazement, he didn’t change. He thought back to the night before. Had what he felt been the curse leaving. Yuki must have lifted it. Kyo closed his eyes as the tears finally came. He wrapped his arms around Tohru and held on tight, like she was the only solid thing left in his world. It suddenly donned on the riceball that the young man she so desperately clung to was still six inches taller than her and not furry. She leaned back and looked at him. His dark red eyes were shining with unshed tears. Every once in a while one would escape, tumbling down Kyo’s check.
“How are we…?” Tohru asked whipping the tears from Kyo’s check.
“It must have been Yuki. I don’t know how but he did.” Kyo put his hands on either side of her face.
“I need to do something.” Tohru got up unsteadily and went into the dinning room. Ayame had quieted and was now staring at the table. The riceball kneeled in front of the snake and wrapped her arms around him.
“Don’t worry, Ayame. I know your hurting right now, but we all are. We all need to grieve. But we can all work together to ease the pain. I… I want him to be here with us. But you know, he helped you, all of you. The curse had been lifted.” Ayame returned her hug. Kyo gave a small smile. Of course his… Tohru would want to comfort as many people as she could. He looked at the wall clock. It was almost time for school. He looked at Shigure. Apparently the dog had noticed to. As they pondered what to do the phone rang making everyone jump. Kyo answered it.
“Kyo?” Haru’s voice sounded choked as he spoke.
“Yeah.” The cat answered.
“Hatori call the school, none of us are going today.” There was a pause. “You, Shigure, Ayame and Tohru should come to the main house. We have a lot to discuss.” The ox hung up with out saying goodbye. Everyone looked at him expectantly.
“We have to go to the main house now.” He went to get his and Tohru’s jackets. Shigure helped Ayame to his feet. Kyo and Tohru stood out side waiting for them when Hatori drove up. As always at first glance he looked the very stoic doctor. But if one were to look closer they would see the tightness around his eyes and mouth, the stiff way he walked or the ramrod straight way he carried himself. The teens didn’t notice any of it.
“I figured it would be best to give you a ride back. That way I know you’ll all make it.” He said in his usual manor. Shigure helped Ayame into the front and opened the door right behind him. Tohru Scooted in followed by Kyo. She placed both of her hands into theirs. The ride was completely silent. Kyo kept tossing Tohru glances. She chewed on her lower lip, pulling it between her teeth. Kyo looked at Shigure. One hand was linked with Tohru’s and the other was supporting his chin as he stared out the window. Ayame had his arm crossed over his chest. His legs were crossed in an almost feminine way. Finally they pulled up to the main house. Haru sat out front with a dusky white hair. His dark red, almost black, eyes darted from the ground to the car that now approached the gates.
“Onwa, it’s good to see you. You’ll have to pardon me. I’m not myself today.” Shigure greeted the man.
“I understand.” The rat held up is hand. Haru hadn’t moved form his seat.
“I don’t mean to be rude, but how did you know to come?” Ayame asked finally.
“I called him.” Haru didn’t look up. “I looked around the phone in Yuki’s house and found his number.”
“I never thought he’d do this.” The rat said.
“What do you mean?” Haru asked.
“Who are you?” Kyo asked.
“This is Onwa Wutase. He’s the rat.” Shigure announced.
“What do you mean?” Haru asked again.
“Perhaps we should go inside.” Hatori said.
“That would be a good idea.” Onwa said.
Once in side the doctor’s house Onwa explained what happened on Yuki’s first visit. “I told him that my sister would get mad at me and say I was selfish for still being alive, but I never thought he would take his own life…” the man was cut off by Haru’s fist in his face.
“You bastard! Did you tell him that he had to die? Huh, did you?” the teen now held the man by his collar.
“Haru, stop it.” Kyo grabbed the ox’s arm. Haru turned and threw his fist at the cat who effectively dodged it.
“Um… is he black?” Tohru asked.
“You know, you really are stupid.” Haru released Onwa turning his attention to the girl. “You’re just lucky you’ve got a cute ass.”
Kyo stepped between them. “I know you’re pissed but don’t take it out on her.”
“Shut up you stupid cat!” Before Kyo could react, Haru punched him so hard he fell backwards into Tohru. The cat tried to catch himself but only succeeded in grabbing the riceball and making sure she took as little of the fall as possible. Kyo looked down at her with a softly murmured, “Are you okay?” Tohru nodded looking up at the stunned faces of the other teen and adults.
Onwa crouched next to them. “Are you the cat?”
“I…” Kyo looked at the girl in his arms, “…was.” Onwa nodded and stood.
“Hatori, may I have a word with you in private?” the doctor nodded and left the room not waiting to see if Onwa would follow.
“Kyo, why don’t you and Tohru go for a walk? You too, Haru, if you’re up to it.” All eyes turned to the ox. He looked up at their waiting faces.
“Oh, yeah I’ll go.” The ox retrieved his coat which had been tossed aside some time while he was black. The three teens made their way outside and they were almost immediately confronted by Rin.
“Hey, you feel that last night?” she inclined her head to them.
“Feel what?” Tohru asked.
“I wasn’t asking you,” She turned an angry face to the riceball.
“Oh, I’m sorry.” She looked down.
“Kyo, Haru, either of you feel that last night?” Rin clarified.
“Yeah, I felt it.” Haru deliberately tried to be vague.
“Yuki broke the curse.” Kyo took Tohru’s hand.
“Oh? So what happened?” the horse asked.
“Yuki sacrificed his own life for all of you.” Tohru said.
“Wait... Yuki’s dead? Damn you have a bad track record.”
“What do you mean?” The riceball asked moving close to Kyo.
“Well… your dad died then your mom, now Yuki. You must be bad luck.” Rin internally smirked as the other girl paled. The cat looked back at Tohru.
“She was just kidding.” He tried to reassure her.
“No, what if she’s right. You all could be at danger.” Tohru grabbed one of the beads on Kyo’s bracelet and started spinning it between her fingers.
“I don’t know what to do. How could I let this happen?” Her fingers moved faster and faster. No matter how Kyo tried to convince her otherwise, Tohru wouldn’t listen.
“Hey, hey, it’s going to break.” Kyo tried to pull the beads way from Tohru’s hand. Due to the combination of Tohru’s fiddling and Kyo pulling, the elastic snapped and the beads all fell to the ground.
