Chapter 8:No such thing as Good and Evil
“Good and Evil, huh? Well if you’re referring to Light and Darkness I guess that can be a reasonable conversation.” Renami lay sprawled out on the back seat just staring at the ceiling. She glanced at the lovers in the front once in a while but never lost her train of thought. “Light is exactly that—Light. It has always stood for innocence, purity, and the kindred spirits of the world, or so people say. Darkness, on the other hand, has always been represented by Shadows. They refer to all the malice, animosity, and murder. But in the end, Shadows cannot exist unless there is Light to cast their reflection.” The demon sighed softly and closed her eyes. “What is Darkness? It is what’s left when there is no Light. That doesn’t make it a bad thing though. Good is self-explanatory, but Evil is more simple and complex than you might think. In the end they’re all just words—words branded to things that people don’t care to understand.”
Shuichi glanced over his shoulder at the goddess as she smiled softly at her host. “So, um, what does that mean?”
Renami’s eyes opened. “Opposites are equal because one cannot live without the other. Call them brothers or enemies but everything has a counterpart.” She paused for a long while, feeling the morning sun touch her face as it penetrated the tinted car windows.
Buildings, light posts, cars, and airplanes all flashed by before her eyes. It was a busy world outside the car. People talked, walked, and worked. They do the same thing every day until they grow old and die. Even after that the world will keep spinning, life will go on, and people will forget. Very few beings are remembered past their generation… Life is the most precious thing there is; yet it can disappear with a light breeze as if it never were.
“All truth be told,” Renami began with a hint of sadness in her voice, “there’s no such thing as Good and Evil. The answer behind all lies is that there is only Humanity and Immortality. Most people never touch Immortality.”
“But,” Shuichi looked at Yuki who glanced at Renami through the rearview mirror.
“Humanity,” Yuki began, “is a word used to define human actions.”
“Exactly!” Renami spoke enthusiastically now. “Humans don’t live forever nor are they remembered very long. That’s where the term was adopted. Immortality only means that someone is remembered far past their years of decease. It later became known as endless life.”
For long moments they rode in silence, each thinking about the true meaning behind living forever. To one that neither ages or dies time must seem irrelevant. Then for those who live on in memory time is everything. It’s always been about how long you can be remembered. That’s why people do the things they do. No one strives to do their best unless they want recognition. People don’t vanish from the world with the greatest ending the world has ever seen unless you plan to go down in history. The same history that people learn in the many years to come…
Yuki slowly made his way up the dirt rode and stopped in front of the temple that he knew so well. The thought that he had grown up here disgusted him. Yet here he was again to find the truth of all the lies.
“You alright, Yuki?” Shuichi asked his lover, placing a hand on the broad shoulder.
“Yeah.” Yuki opened the door and stepped out. Renami sat up and looked at the structure with a venomous glare. This was where her sister was? Oh Kami-sama. The shit has really hit the fan this time… She opened the door and jumped out of the car. With a gentle hand, she covered her head with the black cloak she was wearing. With a reassuring smirk she looked at Shuichi and Yuki. “Time to go.”
