It had been two weeks since Tohru and Nikkou arrived and a week after they were supposed to leave. But there they were, eating breakfast with Kyo and Kazuma. Tohru had been conducting work from the cat’s house. She went out and got a day planner after she called up and said that they were extending their vacation. Uo smiled knowingly and Hana just said that is was very interesting when they heard the news.
Kisa (and Hiro) had visited quite a few times as had Kagura. Rin stopped by once when Haru forgot his lunch. Ayame popped in and was instantly disliked by Nikkou. Shigure gave Tohru one of his books and asked how she and her son were doing. Momiji gave her a hug the moment he saw Tohru, transforming into a rabbit. Luckily in the last week, Nikkou seemed to be warming up to Kyo. Once or twice he almost called the cat, ‘dad’. Anyway, after breakfast Nikkou went outside to read. He had snagged the book that Shigure brought, curious about what the man wrote.
“Honda- kun, it’s good to see you again.” Yuki said. He bent to read the title of the book and paled as he looked back at the boy.
“That Shigure guy brought it. I was curious about what he wrote.” Nikkou put the book down.
“Is Miss Honda here? I was hoping to speak to her.”
“Yeah she’s inside. I think Master’s here too.” Nikkou went back to reading. Yuki smiled and said his thanks.
“… Uo finally believed that Kyo’s hair color was natural when Nikkou was born...” Tohru had been saying. “…When he started growing hair it was the same color it is now, that bright orange.” She looked up as Yuki came in, bidding him a good morning. “We have already cleaned up breakfast but you could have some tea with us.”
“I’m glad that you haven’t left yet. I have been busy with work so this is the first chance I had to come visit.” Yuki smiled as Tohru poured him a cup of tea. “By the way, Honda- kun is reading Shigure’s book.” Tohru’s eyes grew wide as she hopped up with a “Nik- chan, could I have that book please?” The men were left to wait for her return.
“You stupid cat, you really ought to pay attention to what your son reads.” Yuki sipped his tea.
“I didn’t know he’d taken that book. It’s Shigure’s fault for bring it over in the first place.” Kyo put his cup down and followed Tohru outside.
“They really are good together.” Kazuma said quietly.
“I wish they would just admit their feelings to each other.” Yuki answered. The master smiled.
“How much did you read?” Kyo asked Nikkou.
“They were about to do it.” The boy said after Tohru had taken the notorious novel and stashed the book in her bag.
“Not much; why? It’s not like I haven’t heard about it before.” At Kyo’s expression, Nikkou said, “Haven’t you seen the Discovery Channel on American TV?”
Kyo relaxed a little but said, “You shouldn’t be reading that kind of dime store smut.”
Nikkou shrugged and went back inside. He walked past his mother on his way in giving her a small smile.
“You put that book away?” Kyo asked.
“Yeah it’s been tucked away.” The woman smiled. Nikkou ran off to watch TV saying something about grown-ups being boring. Kazuma excused himself back to his house saying that their was something that needed his immediate attention. He smiled as he left the house, happy that the trio was able to spend some time together. When he got back to his house there was a message on his answering machine.
“I need to speak to you about Kyo. Meet me at my house.” Was all the man said before the message beeped. Kazuma sighed. Every time something good happens to the cat, his father calls to complain. The old master slid his shoes back on and left his home.
Kazuma hesitated before knocking. The door flung open and a dark haired man stood framed in the door way. His mud colored eyes were small and he glared at the Karate Master before stepping back to allow him in.
“I’m out of tea.” He said in a rough manner.
“I understand.” Kazuma said following him into the sitting room.
“I’ll get right to the point. I heard that that thing has a child… a son.”
“That’s true.” The Master said.
“And you’re okay with that. Knowing that monster fucked someone… got her pregnant... what if that child is infected or something.” The man lit a cigarette.
“The only thing Nikkou is ‘infected’ with is a great deal of intelligents. His is very clever.” Kazuma said.
“‘Sunlight’, huh? What’s this girl like… the mother?” Kyo’s father asked.
“She is very kind and loving. She cares for Kyo and Nikkou very much.”
“Do you think she loves him?” the man asked.
“Very much so. I do not believe she would have opened herself without loving him.” Kazuma answered.
“It’s so disgusting. He killed his mother and now he thinks he has the right to fall in love.” Kyo’s father crushed out the cigarette. Kazuma stood and bowed.
“If you are only going to whine to me when something goes well for Kyo, I wish you would refrain from calling me.”
“You really sound like you’re his father. You know, take him… that thing is your son. I want no claim of him.”
The master bowed again, “He already is. Good day.” With that he turned to leave, “Oh, here. At least look at your grandson” Kazuma held a picture out to Kyo’s father. The man took it and stared at it. The picture was of Tohru holding Nikkou on her lap. The woman was smiling brightly where as the boy had a small grin, happy but not exuberant. The man handed it back to Kazuma.
“He looks more like that woman then the monster. I guess that’s a good thing. I meant what I said. I want no claim of him. Kyo is your son now.” Kyo’s father said. Kazuma bowed once more and left. He made his way back to his house feeling drained. That man… it’s always a drain on his patience when he visits him. Nikkou looked up as the Karate Master walked passed the window. The boy turned off the TV and went outside to talk to him.

The sun was setting when Yuki finally said his goodbyes and left. Tohru went to go ask Nikkou what he wanted for dinner only to find that he was gone. Tohru frantically looked through the whole house. She even knocked on the toilet room door a few times. Kyo watched her search the house with a worried expression on his face. When Tohru’s investigation extended outside, Kyo grabbed two coats, handing one to Tohru.
“I’ll help you look.” The cat said. The woman’s eyes brimmed with tears.
“We need to find him.” She whipped her eyes and turned to look for her son. Kyo stayed behind her. As soon as they left the Dojo gates, Tohru froze, uncertainty clear on her face. She hung her head as the tears fell. Kyo stood in front of her, holding her as much as he could. Tohru’s head rest against his chest as she cried.
“He was all I had left of you… all I had left of the love I have for you. I have to find him…” She whispered the words that had threatened to escape since she first saw Kyo again. Even if he hadn’t heard, it was enough that she had said them. But Kyo had heard her speak and all he could was hold on and wait for her to stop crying.
“Let’s go look for him.” Kyo said in a soft voice. Tohru nodded and stepped back wiping her eyes. She and Kyo walked all over the area stopping in stores and arcades. The hours droned on as they moved on the neighboring districts. Kyo coaxed Tohru to a bench as he called Kazuma.
The master answered on the third ring, “Hello?” he said into the receiver.
“Master? It’s me, Tohru and I have been out looking for Nikkou. If you see him could you make sure he gets in safely.”
“He’s here. I thought he told you he was at my house.” Kazuma answered.
“He’s there? Good. We’ll be back in a few minutes.” The cat rested his head against his arm that had been draped across the top of the phone.
“Take your time. I think he fell asleep.”
“Thank you Master.” He and Kyo said their good byes and the cat went back to Tohru. At hearing the news, she almost hugged him, Kyo’s hand holding her arms being the only being his only salvation. He looked down into her eyes and remembered the kiss they’d shared two weeks pervious. They were long over due.
“K-Kyo?” Tohru’s voice quivered a little as she peered up at him. He swallowed and leaned forward leaving a small kiss on her lips. Still holding hands, they walked to Kazuma’s house. When the Master answered, he smiled at them, leading them to the living room where the boy slept.
“He fell asleep just before you called.” Kazuma said. As Tohru scooted past to check on the child. She smiled at his deep breathing and lightly rubbed Nikkou’s head, thumb dancing softly over his cheek.
“You can just leave him here for the night. We’ll be over for breakfast.” The old master said. Tohru laid a gentle kiss on her son’s forehead before standing and making her way to the door. She thanked Kazuma and went back to the cat’s house with Kyo. A night to themselves… a night alone. Just like before. Kyo shook his head clear of those thoughts. Just because it happened before didn’t mean it would happen now. They were older and wiser and it would be dangerous for them to do anything again… emotionally for the both of them. Those were the thoughts that lead him and Tohru into the house.
