The Price I Pay
Chapter 9:
There was a gentle hum around him as his eyes fluttered, his consciousness growing closer.
"Yes, thank you, doctor. That's a relief...."
The familiar voice seemed like a record player strumming in the background. The voice talking with the first was unfamiliar.
'My leg and arm feel numb.' Tatsuha observed while his eyes opened slowly. They focused on the ceiling and the florescent light shining down. It blurred his vision and he blinked a few times to clear it.
The gentle hum suddenly stopped.
"Tats!" Ryuichi's voice broke through the monotony of the first two and the 19 year old felt two strong hands suddenly clinging to him. "You're okay! Thank god, thank god!"
Ryu clung to the younger man, his cheeks covered by tears.
"Wha...Ryu...." Tatsuha mumbled, his brain slowly escaping the fog clouding it. Bits and pieces of memory pushed their way into his thoughts. Images of the car that nearly hit him. Images of him trying to avoid the next car and swerving his motorcycle violently. 'I crashed into a mailbox after avoiding the cars....'
The 19 year old recalled, mentally flinching when he realized how much he'd fucked up.
He had lost consciousness before he could warn those who came to help him about his HIV.
'I hope no one....'
"Tats, did you hear me? You're okay!" Ryu cried again, clinging tighter to the younger man.
"Ryu. How long have I been in the hospital?" Tatsuha asked, bringing his right hand to Ryuichi's hair. He ran his fingers slowly through the brown strands.
"Three months." Tohma approached the bed, his eyes watching the affectionate gesture. "Your left arm and leg were broken, but the casts should come off soon."
"That's good." Tatsuha replied, his eyes wandering from Ryuichi to Tohma, and then around the room. "Where's Aneki and Aniki?"
"They're probably still yelling at your first doctor. Along with the rest of the family." Tohma replied, his lips holding a soft, true smile.
"Huh? Why?" Tatsuha asked, though his eyes returned to Ryu. The singer still clung to him. He couldn't help but think it was cute.
"Because the first HIV test your doctor gave ended up being a false positive. You were given two more while you were here, and both were negative." Tohma studied Tatsuha, waiting for his words to sink in.
"What?" Tatsuha stared at Tohma, his brain still too clouded to quickly understand the shacho's words. When the meaning finally penetrated his brain he felt like a weight pressing into him suddenly lifted. "Seriously? I don't...?"
The world suddenly seemed to reopen before his eyes.
"That's right, Tats." Ryu smiled, wistful. His hands finally letting go of the younger man. He averted his eyes, unable to look at his lover. "I...I should go. I...."
"Ryu? What...?"
"Since you're not infected....I shouldn't risk...." Ryu mumbled, glancing at Tohma. He trembled. "We should break up."
"Wha...?" Tatsuha began but Ryuichi hurried from the room before the younger man could finish.
