Chapter 9
Wally sat in the entrance to Nimh’s hideout, letting his legs swing over the edge. The last couple of days had been paradise for him, but all good things must come to an end. The Pokémon Nimh was after had left Goldenrod, according to his Pokédex. Not knowing where it would appear next, he’d gone into the city to stock up on supplies, leaving Wally to amuse himself.
He sighed, lying back on the soft rug beneath him. Why did such rare Pokémon always have to run away whenever a trainer got too close? It was like a rule or something among them, he guessed. He understood why; chasing down such a rare creature showed how dedicated a trainer was. But why did this one have to disappear when it was possibly the only thing that could help him? It wasn’t fair.
The floor dipped slightly under Nimh’s weight, and Wally rolled out of the way before sitting up to peer curiously down at his friend. “Back so soon?”
“You forget they have a big store here, kind of hard to not find what I need. I see you didn’t get far with packing...” Nimh looked around; only half their stuff was put away.
“I know, I’m sorry... got lost in thought.”
“No biggie, not like this is really a hassle anyway.” Nimh finished putting everything else away, then slipped his laptop into his bag. “It’s appeared again in Ecruteak, so we won’t have far to go. I hope you don’t mind walking.”
Wally smiled. “Not at all. It’s just on the other side of the park, right?” He stopped. “But if it’s only across the park, why did we have to pack up? Why can’t we just stay there?”
“Because it takes over half a day to walk across. This is a national park, so it’ pretty big. And constantly flying back and forth would probably scare it away again.” Nimh explained. “Besides, I’ve been up that tree for over a month, definitely time for a change of scenery.”
Wally bit his lip, trying not to laugh. Nimh never had been one to stay in one place too long.

When they came to Ecruteak City in late afternoon, Wally thought his legs would fall off they were so numb. But it had been worth it- the view was beautiful. His knees finally gave out and he let himself drop.
Nimh chuckled softly and reached a hand down to the younger trainer. “Want some help?” Wally took his hand and allowed himself to be pulled up, leaning heavily against the other trainer. “We can rest soon, I promise. I’m gonna be setting our new base up close to the Tower-”
“But aren’t there ghosts there?!”
“I said close, not right by it. They don’t even leave the tower anyway, so we’ll be safe. And even if they do come bother us, our Pokémon are more than capable of handling them okay?”
Wally nodded reluctantly. “Besides,” Nimh added, lifting the boy’s chin to look him in the eyes, “you have me. And I’d never let anything bad happen to you.” It may have just been the poor light, but Nimh thought he saw a blush on the smaller boy’s face. He felt quite pleased with himself. “Well come on, let’s set up camp so we can sleep.”
“Okay.” Wally agreed, and smothered a yawn.
