Nine

AN: Short one....should have been the last part of chapter eight really....

**********************************************************************************

When Arthur came home a strange silence filled the house. He was quite drunk, but noticed the difference to normality immediately. Well, he did not have to be a genius for that: By eight o’clock usually breakfast was ready and the house filled with normal daily activities. Now there wasn’t a sound to be heard and it was dark. All curtains were drawn.

He called for Alucard lowly. There was no reaction to his call. His mind froze and he suddenly felt totally sober.

In the hall he stumbled over the first corpse, one of the maids. He made his way to the window, opening the curtains. The light of the fresh day lit a fraction of the hall, enough for what he needed to know. He came back and just had a look at her neck. He stared for a few seconds, then turned on his heels, nearly trotting on another body, another maid, lying half on the steps of the stairs. He hurried upwards to his room, crossing yet another body in the very sparsely lit corridor and saw dimmed light shining weakly from under his door. When he touched the door handle his hand slipped because the brass was wet all over. That wetness was blood, as he later realized. He opened the door and looked round his room in shock.

Blood was dripping from the ceiling, flesh was hanging in fine stripes from every nail that once had held a picture. Flesh was draped around the furniture. On the wooden floor were pools of blood, blood deeply soaked into the thick carpets, too. The windows were closed, the curtains drawn and the room was lit by the crystal chandelier on the ceiling only dimly, because there was a large piece of skin stretched over it, still dripping blood. He could recognize the awful sweet smell of beginning decay hanging in the heated room already.

The top of his four poster bed had been removed. On the nearest of the posters stuck the poor remains of a body, bones showing here and there, more resembling an untidy cleaned skeleton than a corpse, showing large parts of the femurs and of the pelvis. The arms and legs seemed quite loosely attached and looked like possibly falling apart if touching them. The poster went through the body from the abdomen and emerging from the throat again, where the skull was missing. Lumps of torn flesh piled near the bed.

In the middle of the whole scenario Alucard was seated casually on a high chair, grinning madly, holding the head of the former Mrs Hellsing under his arm, the marks of his teeth still visible in a piece of loosely attached skin where the neck had been.

The No-Life-King was holding court.

“Welcome home to my humble rebellion. This, my dear master, is more or less what I do, if I truly like to challenge someone. I would rather simply have thrown down at your feet a gauntlet as a challenge instead, if I just could have got that bloody thing off my hand, you know…”
