Truth and Justice

Chapter 9: Abduction

~!~!~!~!~!~

The kisses were soft, lingering things that eased Light into relaxation. His hands were wandering slowly, touching the places he knew would begin the spiral upwards in his lover. It was a ritual they hadn't engaged in lately, and Light felt it was about time they returned to it, if only because it reassured him, to have his lover in his arms. To know, again and again, that L was his, that he was loved, that he was capable of love.

It helped that the sounds he drew from L's lips were more intoxicating than the strongest drug, most potent alcohol. When sweat rose on L's skin, Light took the time to taste it, savor it, before he moved on. Before he filled his lover, began building the foundation for orgasm with the soft, gentle movements they so often used with one another. The love that filled him was as overwhelming as the lust and he found himself, not for the first time, keeping eye contact for as long as he could.

The sex was glorious. The afterglow made him feel real, human, and a little less like the sociopath he had once been.

He was still a narcissist, they both knew that, but he wasn't a dangerous one, not anymore. And he'd found the one person that could understand how it had been so easy for him to develop that personality. It was hard, when everyone around you seemed so dense, so stupid, to fall into the mindset that you were better.

L had been lucky. His guardian, the man he regarded as his father, had been on a similar level. He had understood, because of Quillish Wammy, that he was special, yes, but that made him responsible. That meant he had a greater burden to bear for mankind, a duty to do what he could to ensure the world was a better place.

They'd both had the same idea, and that had comforted Light in the early days. They'd both wanted to make the world better. L simply had a better guidance, a helping hand who saw where he could go wrong and aimed him towards a better, higher path.

Light had not been so lucky. He had been given a wonderful family, certainly, but not one that had ever understood. He had that now, in his lover's arms as they lay spent between the sheets, wrapped up in each other.

They didn't even have to say the words anymore, but they did. They did it because it reaffirmed. It reminded. They were one. They were both better than they had once been.

It made Light feel as if he had truly found his purpose in life. "I love you."

"I love you, too." It was repetitive, it was foolish and emotional, but what were they without that? Without the love that bound them together they were L and Kira, they were the detective and the murderer. Together, they were people.

And that made all the difference.

It was the difference between being willing to let people die for the solution to the case and fighting for them to continue living. They all deserved to continue living, L could see that now. Even the monsters, the unredeemable that had to be locked up in cages the rest of their lives. Even they deserved to live.

The very idea of such a thing would have appalled L in the past, but no longer. He understood now, the value of life. The potential that even the most dangerous killers had.

The potential Light had shown, and the result of his continued life.

They were both better from the other, and it was lost on neither of them. It was then that they threw themselves into the Kira case that had supposedly been solved with Near's capture. They began digging into the reputations Mello and Near had held at Wammy's House, uncovered a few interesting morsels about Matt along the way.

Who would have thought that Mello wasn't dominant? It was an interesting angle, and one that Light worked without hesitation. Near had always pushed Mello and only Mello. Matt would have known that.

B would have known that. And that made it all the more difficult.

Both angles were chased viciously, and they managed to track B down to the very same prefecture. They were still trying to pinpoint where, but they were making progress.

It was then that the mistake was made. There was a call from Aizawa, requesting a quick meeting with Light regarding a potential source that refused to go to the headquarters. So Light went, bundled up in the trench coat Watari was known for, with that hat hiding his face and at the same time, making him extremely distinctive.

Twenty minutes later, Aizawa gave L another call.

"This is L," L answered with a soft frown.

"Has he left yet?" Aizawa asked, frowning deeply at his guest.

"He left twenty minutes ago," L said softly. "He has not arrived. We can only assume that there is a reason."

"Do you want me to put out an APB?" Aizawa looked at his guest again.

"Yes. On both him and myself. Identify him as Toshio, myself as Ryuzaki. If you find me and I cannot confirm my identity, detain me until such a time as I have been confirmed to be L," L replied softly. "If you find Toshio-kun, please escort him to the headquarters. You, Matsuda-san and Mogi-san are still authorized to enter."

"Very well. We'll make it a high alert and send out a squad. L... the suspect. He looks like you, doesn't he?" Aizawa closed his eyes for a moment.

"He does."

"Then, if it is possible, I would like to arrange a meeting with Near," Aziawa nodded to himself. "A secure location, of Near's choosing. I have information that will be important to him, and to you, but if I can't be sure of your identity..."

"Of course. I will contact Near," L replied. "I will send you the information when it reaches me."

"Thank you," Aizawa hung up, returned his gaze to his guest. "There has been a complication."

"So I heard. I'll remain in the hotel, under my alias, until the meeting has been arranged. Though I can't imagine Near will be happy to see me," the woman smiled weakly, shaking her head a bit. "Stay in contact, Aizawa-san."

"Be careful," Aizawa replied, watching as she strode out of his office, heels clicking softly on the floor.

A/N: And we're already nearing the end! This is going to be a bit shorter than the previous story, but it's really been fun to write! I've decided on the true identity of Kira, and just how this will unfold. It shouldn't be too long between updates now, I'm getting to the part of the fic I envisioned from the very beginning!

TenshiHaku: Not at all! I find that consistent feedback from a single source is helpful, especially when questions are posed! So, here I'll answer your questions as best I can, without giving away the plot. 1) That's right! If one person intentionally spells a name incorrectly four times, they will die. This is why L wrote twice and Watari wrote twice. I'm using the rules listed in Volume 13: How To Read, so some of the rules I'm using, you may not have seen yet. Please be warned, however, that the pilot chapter, as printed in Volume 13, is included in the spoiler warning and some of it WILL be used in this story! 2) The way things stand, Ryuk is haunting two people: Near and Mikami, because Ryuk was the one to drop the notebooks that each of them picked up. That being the case, he can split his time between them as he chooses. It doesn't matter which human he's with, and since he's not so interested in Mikami anymore, he's haunting Near. 3) Yes, you're right! Hikari means Light, and it is also a woman's name. Hikaru is the masculine form of Hikari, and that's why I chose to use it for Near's request to meet Light. I hope my explanations were understandable, and your English is quite good. I never would have guessed it wasn't your first language! (Then again, there are a lot of people fluent in English that don't know how to speak properly, let alone type.) I can only hope I’ll be as good in my second and third languages as you are in English! (I start studying Spanish formally in the fall, and Japanese informally at about the same time.)
