Chapter Nine
“Yuri…”
Her voice was so weak he couldn’t help but go to her and rest his forehead in the crook of her neck. She was having a vision, he knew, but he couldn’t remember ever hearing her sound so upset while a vision was occurring. He felt her hand grip his arm tightly and could feel her shaking slightly in fear. “Sister, Sister, what do you see with crimson eyes that stare back at me?” Yuri questioned softly, uncaring that the nobles were watching with avid interest.
“A shadow in the north coming this way. The sun and moon are both eclipsed, they’re safe. It can’t find the sun or the moon.” Jaela’s unfocused crimson eyes stared sightlessly ahead. “My sun and moon are safe from harm.”
“What does it want?” Gwendal questioned. “Can you see past the shadow?”
Jaela shook her head as tears began rolling down her face, her vision clearly bothering her. Yuri pressed his lips against his sister’s shoulder and stroked one of her arms in an attempt to soothe her with no success as she began speaking in Japanese.
None of them needed to understand the words that left the woman’s lips to know that she was clearly upset by whatever it was she was seeing. They closely watched as Yuri’s body language shifted from calm to moderately anxious and knew that he was getting upset because of her tears. While Gwendal and Gunter both knew how strong the bond between the two was, it was always amazing to see exactly how strong it was. “Can she show us what she’s seeing?” Waltorana demanded.
“Jaela’s never shown anybody other than Yuri what she sees and even then she chooses whether or not to show Yuri anything.” Gwendal answered calmly.
“She’s never shown more than two people at a time what she sees.” Yuri said as he pressed his sister’s head against his chest.
Tears continued to roll down the woman’s face as she stared sightlessly ahead, her fingers digging into her brother’s arm. “Show them.” Jaela said through her tears. “I’ll show them.”
A collective gasp filled the room as the woman’s vision appeared before their very eyes and they saw firsthand what it was that was making her upset. What they saw, none of them liked.
The sky was glowing as the flames danced around them, the air filled with thick black smoke and the frightened screams of those around them. They were surprised to see that Yuri wasn’t taking charge and realized that even if they did try to do something, they were merely observing what was going to happen. “Don’t let him near the castle!” They heard Jaela yell as she used her magic to push back some partially decayed beings.
“Heika, why can’t we help when your sister’s helping?” Yuri heard Gunter question.
His black eyes flickered up to the castle before answering, “Because we’re up at the castle instead of here like she is.”
“Everybody that’s pure Mazoku get the hell out of here! Get back up to the castle and tell Gwendal to make sure that the castle defenses are at maximum!” Jaela screamed as the soldiers began to run.
“Jaela’s watching this through her own eyes.”
“You won’t get past me!” Anger showed in her eyes as a shadow steadily approached her. “You will not harm my brothers and you will not harm my big brother’s friends.”
As they looked at the shadow, they tried to see who it was with no success. Whoever it was appeared merely as a shadow to their eyes and they wondered if the woman saw a shadow or if she actually saw a face. “So eager to go to your death,” the shadow said smoothly. “You’ve been watching me for some time now, I assume.”
“Yes.”
“You resemble your mother greatly.”
Anger filled them, yet it wasn’t their anger that they felt. “Don’t you ever speak about my mother!” Jaela shouted at the shadow. “She may have been a whore but you don’t have the right to speak about her!”
The shadow laughed as he stalked around the woman, the feeling of darkness pressing against them. “Oh, but I do. I bedded her and here you are now,” laughed the Shadow. “Daddy’s little-”
“Jaela!”
The woman spun around, her crimson eyes widening when she saw Conrart rushing towards her with his sword drawn. “Conrart, no!” Jaela screamed when the Shadow used his magic to knock Conrart off of his horse.
Yuri looked around and saw that the vision was beginning to grow dark. It was nearing its end and they would be sent out. “What made you cry, Jaela?!” Yuri shouted. “What did you see that made you cry?”
The image changed to a village. The group stared when they saw that almost everybody had crimson eyes. “This is the demon seer village.” Stoffel said with amazement.
“There’s Zach.” Gwendal said calmly, his eyes showing amazement.
Yuri stared in amazement at the young man, seeing that he and Jaela bore a striking resemblance to each other. The man, Zach, was the only one in the village that appeared to have black hair which made him stand out among the villagers. “The humans are coming!” Somebody shouted with panic in their voices.
Everybody around them scrambled to either hide themselves or grab their weapons, several crimson pairs of crimson eyes flashing in anticipation. “We die for freedom!” Zach shouted as the human army began pouring out from the trees, the battle beginning.
Anguish filled their beings when the bloody battle finally ended, seeing the number of bodies lying on the ground. Only a few still stood but even they weren’t uninjured. Zach was covered in injuries and appeared to be fighting back tears as he leaned heavily on his sword. “Why didn’t they come?” A woman sobbed when the ones that were hiding left their hiding places and screams of sorrow filled the air. “Why didn’t the Maoh’s army come to help us?! We sent them notice that the humans were going to attack us and they didn‘t come!”
“No!” Someone gasped moments before flames shot out from the trees.
They watched in horror as innocent people fled, many of them trying to put out the fires that were spreading. Zach gripped his sword tightly and began attacking the soldiers that appeared, gaining more injuries as the screams increased. Each one that tried to escape met the blade of the soldiers’ swords and sank to the ground with stab wounds and second mouths. Humans came and killed many of us, they heard Zach think. Then the demons came and killed the rest of us. They won’t be forgiven. Neither side will ever be forgiven.
As the image faded away, they each understood the source behind the woman’s hate. The soldiers that had destroyed the village and had survived the war would be questioned and punished for what they had done. One of them, they knew, had killed Zach months later after he came to the castle and they would find out which one.
