Ivan had no idea how much he was scaring Matthew. He wanted to protect Matthew. When he protected his sister, Natalia always laughed. He never quite understood the look on Yekaterina’s face, but he knew she wasn’t extremely upset.
This was scaring Matthew though. Not as much as it seemed to be scaring the security guard. He just kind of stood their stunned. Ivan was at least half a foot taller than the adult. His eyes were wide and his lips just kind of flapped as he tried to say something. Anything. He was contemplating grabbing the mace from his belt.
The security guard slowly backed away, and then after he got a foot from Ivan started to run away. Ivan turned around and smiled at Matthew. Matthew knew that he shouldn’t be surprised that this was how Ivan got his way, but he felt sympathetic to the victim. He knew that poor security guard was just trying to do his job.
Ivan looked at Matthew for a few seconds. He tilted his head. He had no idea why Matthew looked so upset. He thought for a couple seconds.
Ivan smiled, “Oh, poor Matvey. Did that man upset you? Don’t vorry. He gone now. Ve can continue having fun now, da?” he gave Matthew a hard pat on the back.
“Uh… Yeah. Sorry. That’s me. Easy to startle. Afraid of mall security guards,” Matthew muttered to himself as he followed after Ivan.
Ivan grabbed a hold of Matthew’s hand again and dragged him through the mall. Matthew had to hold back the urge to whimper. He started jogging so he wouldn’t be dragged against the ground. Unfortunately, Ivan noticed and kind of giggled again. Then he started moving faster. When they finally stopped Matthew was gasping for air.
It was no wonder people were so afraid of Ivan. If he did this to someone he was friends with. He shivered. All of a sudden, he felt horrible for Toris and the others. He didn’t know how they managed to make it through the day.
Ivan was looking at Matthew expectantly, a rather proud look on his face. Matthew looked behind Ivan. It was the bookstore. Right. Take the nerd to the bookstore...
Ivan started walking into the store, and Matthew gasped and grabbed onto his arm. Matthew actually managed to pull him back a little. Ivan looked back to him rather confused.
“Vhat? Is something wrong?” he turned back around to face Matthew. He looked a little worried. It was actually pretty cute.
Matthew felt like an idiot. He had grabbed onto Ivan and pulled him back because this was the bookstore that Raivis worked at. He knew that Raivis would’ve had a panic attack the second he had seen Ivan. Matthew had completely forgotten that Raivis was currently in school. Perhaps even noting that Matthew was missing. (Matthew could only hope)
“Umm...” Matthew paused, thinking, “I... Tripped. When I was falling I grabbed onto your arm. Sorry,” Matthew let go of Ivan’s much larger arm.
Ivan gave that childish giggle again and ruffled Matthew’s hair, “That is so cute, Matvey. You should be more careful, da? Don’t vorry. If it happens again, I’ll help.”
Matthew gave a kind of nervous laugh, “Thanks.”
Matthew then followed Ivan into the bookstore. It was kind of weird. Ivan looked completely out of place here. Though if Matthew needed a book from the top shelf he was set... Ivan looked very aware of the fact that he didn’t fit in here.
Matthew noticed that the employees were just kind of staring at Ivan, debating who would have to greet him. As usual no one even noticed that Matthew was there. Matthew gave a small smile. Whenever Raivis was working here, he’d run out from behind the counter accidentally running into the edge of the counter along the way to greet him. Raivis really was a kind person.
Ivan looked behind him at Matthew and just paused. He couldn’t help but stare. Matthew was standing there with a small kind smile on his face. He was looking off into the distance and he just looked so... Beautiful.
Matthew looked up slowly at Ivan. Ivan’s eyes were wide and his lips were slightly parted. His cheeks looked like they might be a little flushed. Matthew felt embarrassed. He nervously brushed his hair aside and looked away. He felt the blood rushing at his cheeks.
The look on Ivan’s face... That couldn’t have been from looking at him, right?
Matthew tried to think of something to say. He had quickly become aware of the silence. Nothing really came to mind. He stole a sideways glance at Ivan. The look on his face was similar, but now he was sporting a smile. He had leaned forward to look closer at Matthew.
Matthew wished that he could just disappear. He had no clue had a normal person would do in this situation. But... What on earth were you supposed to do in this situation when Ivan was involved? The fact that it was Ivan seemed to make everything more complicated. Or maybe because it was something that he never thought would happen, so he never bothering to think about it. Maybe he was just as socially inept as Ivan...
Matthew took a deep shuddering breath and walked through some of shelves, “So. What kind of books do you read?” Matthew didn’t really know what else to ask in this type of store. Even though he knew that this couldn’t be a strong subject for Ivan. He stopped and delicately picked up a book from the shelf.
“I don’t read. I don’t really like to,” Ivan answered shamelessly. It was obvious that the employees could hear him by the looks on their faces.
Matthew couldn’t really help it. He just started cracking up. Most people would’ve tried to answer something that would impress the person they were with. Ivan was just so... Honest. It was kind of like a child’s honesty, but Matthew couldn’t help but think that it was rather endearing.
Matthew sweet light laughter drifted through the quiet store. Ivan felt the blood rushing to his cheek. Normally he would get upset, thinking that they were laughing at him. But with this cute sound drifting through the air, he just couldn’t get mad. And that was a first for Ivan.
Matthew cupped his hand over his mouth. He felt embarrassed again. His cheeks felt like they were on fire. “Oh! I’m sorry!” Matthew said while trying to catch his breath, “I just... I’ve never expected such a straightforward answer. It’s refreshing, really Ivan.”
Ivan nodded happily, “Oh! Spasiba bolschoi!” he then giggled excitedly, “I guess if Matvey likes something,” he reached over and plucked the book that Matthew had picked up earlier. He smiled at Matthew.
Matthew didn’t really know what to say. Was Ivan offering to read something for him? That was actually... Pretty cute. It was a small gesture, but it was something that Matthew was sure Ivan wasn’t capable of. Everything that Matthew had seen since they’d been in school together pointed to that. It was odd...
Matthew walked a couple steps and sunk down to pluck a different book from the shelf. He got back up rather elegantly, and held it out to the Russian, “Here. I think you’d like this one better. I haven’t actually read that one yet.” Matthew smiled gently.
Ivan eagerly grabbed the book. He smiled wide. It was like Matthew had given him something. This was something that they had shared. He ran off to buy the book right away. This book would be proof that he had spent the day with Matthew.
Matthew stood there confused. Ivan had just bolted off to buy the book. But... He wasn’t quite done looking around... Oh, well. The bookstore would still be here tomorrow.
A/N:
Spasiba bolschoi: Thank you very much/Many thanks
I know. It’s been freaking forever. I know. I’m horrible. I didn’t quite know where to go. Yesterday I couldn’t get anywhere with it, but today I just wrote like the wind. I can’t wait to start the new chapter tomorrow. <3
